Introduction Information technology jobs include occupations that are associated with entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, multimedia, and systems integration services. While the information technology group does not currently meet the employment levels of the others, it is quickly growing.

Online Job Postings

Job Posting Analysis Despite experiencing a 22 percent decline in postings throughout 2016, demand for IT positions grew by 952 ads for a total of 5,991 in Q1 2017. Regardless, employer postings for IT positions in Oakland County has remained greater than 5,000 in every quarter since it passed that mark in 2015.

Employment Analysis Employment for IT occupations in Oakland County continues its gradual climb – the beginning of 2017 marked the eighth consecutive year of growth. With over 33,000 workers in these jobs, the county is experiencing its greatest level of IT employment since 2002.

Analysis Software developers for applications continue to dominate job demand in Oakland County’s IT group. The number of online job postings for software developer’s alone dwarfs that of the second most demanded job, computer systems engineers/ architects, by 1,350 postings. Other top jobs include information technology project managers, computer systems analysts, and computer user support specialists. Information Technology Education and Experience A bachelor’s degree is the most overwhelmingly demanded educational credential by employers in the IT field, preferred in 85 percent of postings that specified education level. Another 12 percent of these ads were open to candidates with an associate’s degree or less. Advanced degrees are rarely mentioned in online postings, suggesting that employers would instead prefer additional experience. In fact, 50 percent of employers (2,040 postings) seek prospective candidates with three to five years of experience. About 22 percent of jobs this quarter were available to entry level candidates, with the other 29 percent open to those with six years of experience or more.

Information Technology Wages The high demand and high level of skills necessary for IT occupations is demonstrated through the advertised salaries – among the 667 postings that did offer salary information, 75 percent offered over $75,000 annually. The average advertised salary in the IT occupation group was $89,303, the highest advertised among all fields in Oakland County. The wage table below displays the median hourly wages for the top jobs, and in general, they are quite high. While Computer User Support Specialists have the lowest wages at $21.67, most are over $30 hourly and range up to the $51.30 earned by Computer Network Architects.
