The number of online job postings for software developer’s alone dwarfs that of the second most demanded job, computer systems engineers/ architects, by 1,350 postings. Other top jobs include information technology project managers, computer systems analysts, and computer user support specialists. Information Technology Education and Experience A bachelor’s degree is the most overwhelmingly demanded educational credential by employers in the IT field, preferred in 85 percent of postings that specified education level. Another 12 percent of these ads were open to candidates with an associate’s degree or less. Advanced degrees are rarely mentioned in online postings, suggesting that employers would instead prefer additional experience. In fact, 50 percent of employers (2,040 postings) seek prospective candidates with three to five years of experience. About 22 percent of jobs this quarter were available to entry level candidates, with the other 29 percent open to those with six years of experience or more.

The average advertised salary in the IT occupation group was $89,303, the highest advertised among all fields in Oakland County. The wage table below displays the median hourly wages for the top jobs, and in general, they are quite high. While Computer User Support Specialists have the lowest wages at $21.67, most are over $30 hourly and range up to the $51.30 earned by Computer Network Architects.
