Introduction: Region 9
State of the Labor Market in Region 9 Online job postings hit their highest point within the last 5 years. Q1 2016 witnessed a new high in online job postings, reaching 20,499 postings. This is 248 postings higher than the previous peak in 2013 where 20,251 postings were made. This could indicate a lot of potential for job seekers within this region. Employment within Region 9 strengthened while unemployment fell. Employment has seen steady growth, reaching a new high of 495,533 workers in Q1 2016. This trend has been steadily increasing after a drop in employment toward the end of 2008, surpassing pre-recession employment. Unemployment has also been steadily falling since 2009, reaching its lowest point in 5 years of 3.9%. Occupations in the Information Technology (IT) group contain the highest advertised salaries. The IT occupation group reported a mean advertised salary of over $80,000. This indicates a lucrative opportunity for local jobs seekers. Occupations in the Engineering and Design also reported high average advertised salaries at $74,000, indicating another great opportunity. The top in-demand jobs present a great opportunity for entry-level job seekers. Truck drivers and registered nurses are the two highest in-demand occupations within Region 9. Both of these occupations are part of occupation groups where the majority of employers are looking for talent with 0-2 years of experience. This presents a great opportunity for those entering the workforce since there are many positions to be filled. Energy is the occupation group with the least amount of postings. Although an increase in job postings was reported, Energy occupations reported only 66 job postings during Q1 2016. Employment increased by 140 workers from 5,938 workers employed in Q4 2015 to 6,078 workers in Q1 2016.
