Advertised Salaries Quarter 3 2016

Of the 301 postings related to the Agriculture occupations, 55 postings specified an annual salary. Among the 55 postings, 56 percent (31 postings) indicated it to be less than $35,000 per year. Due to the small proportion of postings with salary data, this might not represent all workers in the Agriculture group in Region 9. From the BLS data, six out of the ten occupations were estimated to have an annual median salary less than $35,000. While salaries at this level might be indicative of the low-level experience required for entry into Agriculture, the preference for Bachelor’s degrees coupled with low salaries could discourage entry into the field.

Education Wages

< $35,000, a typical entry-level annual salary

Advertised Salaries Quarter 3 2016

Of the 91 postings that advertised an annual salary, 37% specified it to be less than $35,000 per year, followed by 18% specifying it to be between $35,000 to $49,999 per year. Generally, starting wages for many teaching positions are not competitive but have the opportunity to grow. For many positions, wages are negotiated by a union and increase over time. Most positions in Q3 2016 required little to no experience so it stands to reason that this is why wages in postings are low even though most jobs require at least a Bachelor’s degree.
