Should the unemployment rate hold steady or continue to decrease, 2016 will be the first year in the 21st century where Wayne County unemployment remained below seven percent.

3. Health Care and IT remain the highest in-demand occupational groups. These two groups are routinely near the top in terms of online job postings. Health Care led all occupation groups in postings with nearly 7,900 during Q2. Other top posting groups that were not analyzed in this report include Customer Service and Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics. See appendix 2 for more information on postings for all occupational groups.

4. IT group sees strong rebound in demand following a decline in postings for two consecutive quarters Online postings for IT occupations rebounded during Q2 2016 following two consecutive quarters of decline. Employers posted nearly 1,000 more ads in Q2 than in Q1 (+13%). Online job ads for this occupation group have now surpassed 7,000 per quarter in Wayne County in five of the past six quarters.

5. Engineer and IT occupations offer highest wages but also most demanding educational attainments Both of these occupation groups often offer wages above $50,000 at the entry-level and above $75,000 for more experienced workers, but also require prospective students to earn at least a Bachelor's in a relevant field. Over 85% of IT postings asked for a BA while over 90% of postings for Engineers and Designers asked for a BA.

Skilled Trades & Technicians (Manufacturing Focused)

Introduction Skilled Trades & Technicians

Online Job Postings

WIN’s technicians/skilled trades category includes jobs related to advanced manufacturing. Southeast Michigan has more demand for skilled- trades labor, such as CNC machinists and welders, than almost anywhere else in the country. NOTE: Skilled trades related to construction and assembly are not included in this cluster, as the focus is on advanced manufacturing only.

Postings Over Time Despite a slight drop in online postings for Skilled Trades and Technicians occupations in Q2 2016, employer demand in Wayne County remains strong for these occupations relative to previous quarters. Online job ads decreased to 1,300 in Q2(-8.5%) from a record high of 1,400 in Q1. Postings for this occupation group have remained above 1,000 for the past six quarters, indicating not only higher levels of demand but also that more employers have begun to use more advanced hiring methods to find talent.

Data: Burning Glass Technologies Analysis: Workforce Intelligence Network

Employment Over Time

Employment Over Time Employment for Skilled Trades and Technicians has increased again into 2016, however, growth has slowed relative to previous years. During Q1 2016, this occupation group employed 30,600 individuals in Wayne County, just a 0.4% rise compared to 2015. Employment has now surpassed 2008 levels, but remains well below early 2000 levels.

Health Care

Introduction Health Care

Online Job Postings

WIN’s health care occupation group includes jobs related to health care support and practitioners. Registered nurses are routinely the most in-demand job in this group.

Postings Over Time Online job postings for Health Care dropped slightly during Q2 following a record level of employer in Q1 2016. Online ads for this occupation group dropped by five percent to 7,900. Despite the decline, demand for these workers remains strong in Wayne County.

Data: Burning Glass Technologies Analysis: Workforce Intelligence Network

Employment Over Time

Employment Over Time Despite the recent drop in postings, the high number of ads throughout 2015 has resulted in Health Care employment increasing by about 2,000 workers to nearly 74,000. The 2.8% jump demonstrates the strength of the health care sector, as employment has increased annually since 2006. Data: EMSI, BLS Analysis: Workforce Intelligence Network

Most often advertised education: Associate's

Health Care Educational Attainment & Experience Required

Entry-level opportunities available but require education Minimum Educational Attainment Required Q2 2016

Unlike other occupation groups, one particular form of educational attainment does not dominate postings for Health Care occupations. An Associate’s degree was the most common form of education asked for by employers via online ads with nearly 1,800 online ads. Meanwhile, nearly 1,300 postings required a high school diploma or vocational training while an additional 1,300 asked for a Bachelor’s. The nearly 600 ads asking for graduate or professional degrees were most likely for occupations like physicians and pharmacists which require years of education and training beyond a Bachelor’s. Also dissimilar to other occupation groups was the distribution of experience requirements for Health Care workers. An overwhelming majority of employers in Wayne County asked for little to no experience from prospective candidates. This indicates that with enough training or education individuals can immediately begin working in one of many in-demand Health Care fields.
