2019 WinSport Summer Guide
IT’S TIME TO PRESS PLAY WinSport’s new summer camps directly address the growing epidemic of children choosing technology over outdoor play. Our camps take the issue head on – we get kids off their devices and onto the playground. Playing sports, playing games, playing with adventure and playing with friends – these are the ingredients of a healthy upbringing. We know parents recognize their own downfalls – bubble wrapping kids to prevent injuries, passing them a smart phone to keep them quiet or giving them a tablet when they need babysitting. WinSport believes good things happen when kids play. As a non-profit organization founded upon an Olympic legacy, WinSport continues its dedication towards athletic development. However, athletes only emerge when they begin with play. Our programs are also designed to teach kids skills progressively and intentionally – teaching certain skills at the correct time – in activities so they develop a life-long love for sport. Our summer camps cater to a diversity of kids’ interests and abilities. All camps include building the strength and conditioning, stance, balance, agility as well as the soft skills of building confidence, leadership, compassion, imagination and creativity. Parents can feel good about sending their kids to us – our instructors are all highly qualified and experienced complete with all the necessary emergency skills. Your kids will challenge themselves in ways you never thought possible, but it will always be done in a safe environment. Summer camps include Skate, Hockey & Ringette Camps, Sport & Athlete Development Camps, Nature Camps, Adventure Camps and Mountain Bike Camps, which are all online, available for booking. Drop the iPad and come out and press play with US.

Get outside and go wild! We know that when children engage with nature, they develop physically, mentally and socially. When we combine child-led play and learning in a natural environment, the benefits are multiplied. Playing with different textures and tools like dirt, sticks and mud promotes imaginative play and enhances their creativity. As a parent, feel confident you’re providing your child the best environment to learn and thrive in. We use nature to engage your child’s curiosity and they will play like you did when you were growing up – digging in the mud, looking under rocks, building forts, picking leaves, and climbing trees. Let your kids run wild with us.

The aim of this camp is to take your child from watching on the sidelines to playing center field. Each day, we’ll cover general athletic skills and team tactics tied to three different sports. Instructors will evaluate your child’s skills at the beginning of the camp and again at the end. This will show your child exactly how much they have improved giving them confidence to try new sports in the future knowing they now have a reliable athletic foundation to build from. This means your child could enjoy repeating this camp throughout the summer and get exposure to many more sports. We offer your child the opportunity to try a variety of sports to develop specific skills that can be applied to many other sports We intentionally don’t list the sports we schedule because it’s not about your child learning the specific sports - it’s about the specific skills they learn and their ability to be applied to many other sports. This is the foundation of athleticism and ultimately, personal development. Each week will end with a camp-wide championship.

Every kid is an athlete, and performance is all about learning to use your athletic potential to be your very best. Whether your child specializes in just one sport, plays multiple sports or whether they simply want to learn what it takes to be an athlete, this camp is exactly what they need this summer. Under the guidance of our Performance Training Centre’s Strength and Conditioning team, our coaches have designed a week-long curriculum focusing on mastering foundational sport skills (running, jumping) and improving physical conditioning (muscular endurance and strength, speed, power, agility, and flexibility) allowing them to build their athletic toolkit. In addition to the physical elements, athlete campers will learn the importance of being a team player. They will develop leadership skills and will be introduced to sport nutrition and hydration, visualization and goal setting. They will participate in friendly competitions, workouts focusing in body weight and resistance training appropriate for their age and stage of development as well as sport activities round out the day. Rarely do kids get exposed to athleticism in such a comprehensive way.

Even the hockey greats had to figure out hockey for the first time. If your child can skate and wants to take a shot at hockey, this camp is a great introduction to the sport. Our Hockey Canada-certified coaches provide a caring, safe and encouraging learning environment for your first-time player. Even the pros hang up their skates once in a while. Our research shows that learning a variety of sports creates better athletes. In addition to the twice-daily ice times, we’ll cross train with off-ice sports such as lacrosse, rugby, floorball/ball hockey and handball - just to name a few. We’ve also got the best playground in Calgary, so campers will get access to daily activities such as Skyline Luge, trampolines, gymnastics, archery, rock climbing, mini golf and more! AGES 7-12 (BIRTH YEARS: 2007-2012)
The best of winter hockey and summer mountain biking in one camp! Two ice times and two hours of mountain biking each day. On the hockey side, the instruction is much like our Development Hockey Camp, so it’s not for first timers. Some previous hockey experience is necessary, but not a lot! As always, coaching is provided by our Hockey Canada-certified coaches who are cross-trained in teaching mountain biking by our Mountain Bike School. We assess for both hockey and biking and will do our best to ensure your child will be placed with kids of similar abilities – this means your child may be on the ice with one group and on the hill with another. When not on the ice or riding the trails, we’ll be further developing their skills through other sports such as ball hockey, rugby, archery or others. Then there’s the added treats such as riding the Skyline Luge, climbing a rock wall or playing a round of mini-golf! At the end of this camp, your child will be so much more advanced and confident in not only their hockey and mountain biking skills, but will have made many new friends. You might just hear “What do I get to do next?”

Talk about the ultimate in cross-training! This is our Development Hockey Camp combined with the sport of obstacle course racing. Campers will tackle obstacles during their two-hour daily training sessions where skilled instructors will teach your child how to explode up warped walls, climb ropes, scale walls and much more. Your child will build fitness, coordination and problem-solving skills, all of which they take with them when they turn to the ice. Our Hockey Canada-certified coaches take over with their curriculum that develops your child’s hockey specific skills, skating and individual tactics. As with our other hockey camps, WinSport’s playground is our backyard offering multiple cross-training opportunities, but really, it’s just a whole lot of summer fun. Campers will get to try other sports and activities such as rugby, lacrosse, Skyline Luge, and mini golf among other things.

Hockey and golf. Is there a better combination of two sports? We didn’t think so either… (ok, well maybe our Bikes & Blades Camp is a very close comparison). We’ve partnered with the Golf Canada Calgary Centre to offer a new and unique summer camp experience that your athlete child will be raving about! Each day is packed with two on-ice sessions and 1.5 hours of golf instruction. On the hockey side, it is much like our Development Hockey Camp with coaching provided by our Hockey Canada-certified coaches. On the golf side, participants will be transported to the Golf Canada Calgary Centre to receive golf development instruction from their team of PGA of Canada Golf Professionals. They will focus on driving, chipping, putting, rules and gameplay. When we’re not on the ice or hitting the links, players will “round” out each day developing their skills through other sports such as floorball, rugby, archery or others. Then there are the added treats such as riding the Skyline Luge, climbing a rock wall or mini golf! Campers will finish off the week by putting their newly developed golf skills to the test with a round of golf on the Par 3 9-hole course as well as showcasing their hockey skills to family and friends in a game to end it off right.
