Scholarship Information In the 21st century, the game of golf needs the bravery of leadership. The Walter Woods Scholarship has been created to give young individuals of all nations, genders and races the best possible chance of reaching their highest goals in international golf and turf management careers. The scholarship is granted annually and covers one full academic term of 20 weeks study at WINSTONuniversity from October 10th 2013 to March 31st 2014, followed by a 24 weeks internship at a world-class golf course of individual choice. Studies are divided into four main areas: turfgrass management, management studies, technical competence and extra golf curricula. Industry experts share their insight whilst students complete weekly case study assignments. Graduates leave with an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) accredited WINSTONuniversity Certificate in Golf Management, the perfect start for an international career in golf.

Walter Woods Walter Woods was a renowned Course Manager for 33 years, and in 1996 retired after 21 years as Superintendent of St Andrews Links Trust, a period that included preparing for 4 Open Championships. During his career, Walter was instrumental in developing education and management qualifications for greenkeepers, and was one of the founding fathers of the British and International Greenkeepers Association. He was awarded the Queens British Empire Medal and the Tom Morris Award from GCSAA for his service and contribution to golf. Walter is an inspiration for those who wish to make golf their career. Through dedication, integrity, and a wonderful sense of the values of golf, he took forward not just his own facility, but the game of golf itself. As he communicated the Spirit of St Andrews around the world, the Walter Woods Scholarship ensures that his legacy endures through the next generations.
