Robin Layton Capturing Energy

January 8 – February 21, 2014 Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to present our first solo exhibition with photographer Robin Layton. Robin Layton’s exhibition at Winston Wächter features works from two distinct series of her fine art photography. This exhibition of minimal photographs captures natural movement, transcending time and place with the essence of being as “of the moment” as breathing. Here we see compositions where time is standing still – either in a moment when fog rolls across a lichen-covered dock; a wave breaks at the shore; or a boy makes a jump shot in front of a threadbare basketball hoop. Integral in this show is a selection of work from Layton’s newly published book, “Hoop: The American Dream.” This series is a loving look at America’s game at its elemental level: the simple hoop. Layton traveled throughout the United States photographing basketball hoops of notoriety and simplicity in small towns and inner city courts. From the President’s personal basketball net at the White House to the battered old hoops belonging to the game’s greatest athletes, this series of work chronicles that simple altar where, once again, energy flows and time stops. Layton is drawn to the idea of energy. As she states, “I have always worked to move away from the literal and static place of photographic art and bring forth in my work the kinetic energy inherent in how I see it in my mind’s eye, life itself. Everything has it’s own power and it’s right to be seen.” Robin Layton was named by Life Magazine as one of the eight most talented photographers in America. She has been nominated for Pulitizer Prize and featured in the Smithsonian.
