Still A Selection of Artworks by
Robin Layton
Robin Layton’s photographs have the quiet ability to capture life; the universal places and moments often passed over. Her series have focused on the crashing of waves, the solitude of coastal and country landscapes and the familiarity of the basketball hoop. Layton masterfully forces the viewer to press pause and take breath. During her 25 years as a photojournalist, Robin Layton has produced countless notable photographs and earned a place among the world’s top photographers. By age 24, she was honored by LIFE magazine as one of the top eight most talented photographers in America. Among her numerous awards as a photojournalist, Layton is also a Pulitzer Prize nominee and Nikon Ambassador.

12 “Everything about the Northwest and Seattle inspires me and my work. I am home here. I found my spot in the world. I love this beautiful city of ours. It is magic. When I first moved here, it felt like the city was pulling art out of me that I didn’t even know I had. e connection I have with Seattle started not long after I was here. I had the privilege of taking the iconic photo of Ken Griffey Jr. at the bottom of the pile of Mariners at home plate when the Mariners won the AL West Championship in 1995. My love for the Seahawks and love for Seattle, gave me my perfect subject matter. I wanted to capture the energy and spirit of the 12 fans and elevate this passion to high art. When thinking about it more, I realized that the Seahawk blue and green colors represent the unstoppable shimmering power of the water and the trees that surrounds us. Our Seahawks also represent the essence of the passion and spirit of this beautiful and magical city of ours. We are 12!”

Capturing Engergy Layton is drawn to the idea of energy. As she states, “I have always worked to move away from the literal and static place of photographic art and bring forth in my work the kinetic energy inherent in how I see it in my mind’s eye, life itself. Everything has it’s own power and it’s right to be seen.”

hoop the american dream “My images in my book, hoop the american dream, are a loving look at America’s own beautiful game at its most elemental level: the basketball hoop. It started out as a crazy vision and ended up as a dream come true. I jumped into a van and traveled to all the corners and everywhere in between of this beautiful country of ours. Places that people told me were so tough and dangerous that they wouldn’t go to in the middle of day. Instead, I found individuals there who were gentle of spirit and speech and marveled when I asked to photograph their “beautiful” old hoop. ey would cackle and reply, “at old thing?” I learned that we are made up of a country of kind and generous folk. What you see in the pages of this book, are all the hoop dreams of every kid that played under this simple altar, the basketball hoop. e images reveal the weathered dreams, fading memories and future glories hanging from solitary backboards around the country. Some photos are of the childhood hoops of celebrated players. e altars upon which they layed their dreams, honed their skills and made a first splash in the game. e photographs and accompanying players’ commentary illuminates their often-lowly origins and the rugged hours they spent making dreams come true. Basketball is deeply ingrained in our childhood, our play, in our culture and dreams. Rich or poor, unknown or famous, rent or own, we all love the game of basketball. From urban playgrounds to small-town alleyways and windswept barnyards, basketball has become a universal American experience and a worldwide cultural touchstone. ese photos show that shared community, as well as the diversity and and astonishing beauty surrounding this simple iron ring.”
