It is now year sixty-six of The Winter Show— the longest-running art, antiques, and design fair in the country—and we continue to set the standard in an increasingly competitive field. The Winter Show is East Side House Settlement’s principal fundraising effort and the only major fair in New York where all proceeds go directly to charity. Established in 1891, East Side House is a non-profit, community-based organization providing quality education training and assistance services to individuals in the Bronx and northern Manhattan. Your contributions directly impact our most vulnerable communities, helping 10,000 people break the cycle of poverty annually, and we are so grateful for your support! At this year’s Opening Night Party, we are pleased to present our Honorary Chairs, Pamela and David B. Ford, with the inaugural Cornerstone of Excellence Award for their unwavering dedication to, and work on behalf of historic preservation, education, and the arts. The Cornerstone of Excellence Award will be presented annually to those who exemplify and inspire a spirit of philanthropy in their community. This year’s loan exhibition from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library celebrates 4,000 years of Hispanic history, art, and culture. Co-curated by Philippe de Montebello and Peter Marino, we are thrilled to have masterworks from the renowned collection, representing the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, and the Philippines. Highlights include works by Diego Velázquez, El Greco, Francisco de Goya, and more.
Last year saw a number of exciting changes to the Show, and we continue to keep our sights focused on the future. We have been responsive to changing demographics and tastes in the art market, while continuing to maintain our unyielding focus on quality. This year we are excited to introduce a varied mix of new exhibitors, disciplines, and price points, with some of the world’s foremost experts in the fine and decorative arts present on the show floor. The Winter Show, America’s premier fine art, antiques, and design fair, is today the longest running major fair in the country. From its inception, it has been a must-see event that has inspired generations of collectors, designers, and art enthusiasts. This year, we will present seventy-two leading dealers from around the world featuring over 5,000 years of art from antiquity through the present day. As you explore the Show you will recognize many exhibitors who have been participating in the fair for decades. In 2020, these familiar faces will be joined by a diverse group of new dealers from such widespread locations as Munich, Brussels, Virginia, and Zurich. We hope you will feel inspired by the fair’s international scope and tradition of excellence. The Winter Show Honorary Chairs Pamela and David B. Ford
East Side House and The Winter Show are delighted to announce that Pamela and David B. Ford, Honorary Chairs of this year’s Show, are the recipients of the 2020 Cornerstone of Excellence Award. The Award, which will be presented annually at the Opening Night Party, was established to recognize those who, like the Fords, show a deep commitment to education and the arts. Pamela and David B. Ford, longtime supporters of East Side House and The Winter Show, serve respectively as the CEO and Chairman of Princess Pictures, a family entertainment motion picture and television company, and Iconic Vault, an e-commerce destination specializing in fashion, jewelry, and art. Mr. Ford retired in 2003 after thirty-three years at The Goldman Sachs Group where he was a managing director and co-head of Global Asset Management. The diverse and extensive range of charitable and non-profit organizations in which the Fords are involved speaks not only to their wide-ranging interests but also to their remarkable history of philanthropy.

Mrs. Ford serves on the Board of Trustees of The American Ballet Theater and the Board of Directors for the Greenwich International Film Festival and Boys and Girls Club of Newport County, Rhode Island. She was a former Chair of American Place Theater, is a Friend of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is active with the Animal Medical Center’s President’s Council. Mr. Ford is a member of the Board and Director/Trustee of the Animal Medical Center; the Preservation Society of Newport County; and the National Sporting Library and Museum. He is also a member of the Barnes Foundation National Ambassadors Board. Mr. Ford was a former Chair of the National Audubon Society and was previously a Director/Trustee of the New School, Florida State University; World Monuments Fund; International Tennis Hall of Fame; Redwood Library and Athenaeum; and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He served on the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School from which he received an M.B.A.

East Side House Settlement and The Winter Show are delighted to welcome acclaimed interior designers Amelia Handegan and Brian J. McCarthy, and award-winning architect Annabelle Selldorf as this year’s Design Co-Chairs. Amelia Handegan As principal of her Charleston design firm, Amelia Handegan established an early reputation for her work and involvement in the restoration of great American houses. Beyond the classical, her work has expanded to projects that cut across genre and function. Amelia is known for her sensibility with color and light. She is the author of Rooms, a photo-essay collection of her work, which ranges from Charleston’s finest 18thcentury houses to a set of rustic cabins in the Blue Ridge Mountains and a jewel box pied-á-terre on Fifth Avenue. Her work has appeared in many publications including Architectural Digest, British House & Garden, Veranda, and Milieu. She resides between Charleston, Folly Beach, and Houston with her husband.

Annabelle Selldorf
A former partner of the legendary design firm ParishHadley, award-winning designer Brian J. McCarthy graduated from New York City’s Pratt Institute and has worked on projects around the world. Additionally, McCarthy has designed an array of stunning private residences, many for clients so high profile they wish to remain anonymous.
Annabelle Selldorf is the Principal of Selldorf Architects, a 70-person architectural design practice that she founded in New York City in 1988. The firm creates public and private spaces that manifest a clear and modern sensibility to enduring impact.
In 2005, McCarthy designed the private quarters and refurbished the State Rooms in Winfield House, the official residence of the Ambassador to the Court of St. James. McCarthy is a member of Architectural Digest’s AD100, Elle Decor’s A-List and his work has been featured in many publications, including Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, New York Magazine (100 Best), The New York Times, and Veranda, as well as in several books, including his own, Luminous Interiors, which was released in 2013, and Parish Hadley Tree of Life, which he coauthored with Bunny Williams and was released in October of 2015.

Selldorf Architects has worked on projects that range from museums and libraries to a recycling facility and at scales from the construction of new buildings to the restoration of historic interiors and exhibition design. Cultural and institutional clients include The Frick Collection, Hispanic Society Museum & Library, Clark Art Institute, Neue Galerie New York, Luma Arles, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Ms. Selldorf is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and serves on the Board of the Architectural League of New York, the World Monuments Fund, the Chinati Foundation, and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. FOLK ART Double-sided Panel Painting Edwin Schermerhorn, ca. 1841 Offered by David Schorsch~Eileen Smiles
This is the first recorded artwork by Edwin Schermerhorn, who was born in 1817 in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and died in Fulton, New York, in 1873. His occupation was variously recorded as a farmer, wheelwright, carriage maker, wagon maker, and painter. He was the son of Nicholas Schermerhorn of Schenectady, New York, and Elizabeth Heaton of Newtown, Pennsylvania, who married there in 1815 and resided until the mid-1830s, when they moved to New York State. During the period when the Schermerhorn family resided in Newtown, the population was approximately six hundred people, making it probable that they were familiar with the artist Edward Hicks (1780-1849)— today famed for his many renditions of The Peaceable Kingdom. Hicks operated a coach and sign making business in Newtown from 1821 to 1849. In his diary for 1827, Hicks noted that he was “now employing four hands, besides myself, in coach, sign, and ornamental painting, and still more in repairing and finishing carriage wheels.” Considering Schermerhorn’s age at the time and proximity, it is possible that he could have been apprenticed to Hicks, who employed boys as young as thirteen. By 1835, Edwin Schermerhorn had moved to Saratoga Springs, New York. The double-sided panel painting was made by Schermerhorn as a token of love for his young wife Susan Peacock, whom he married in January of 1841 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Charlton, New York. After Edwin’s death in 1873, his immediate family migrated westward, eventually settling in Wausau Village, Nebraska. The Schermerhorn panel painting descended in the family and has remained in private ownership until now.

SILVER Moss-Roses Vase Tiffany and Company, 1893 Offered by Spencer Marks
In a word: exuberant. This Tiffany and Company silver vase embellished with enamel floral decoration bursts with natural energy and beauty. Designed by John T. Curran and made for the World’s Columbian Exposition, the world’s fair held in Chicago in 1893, it features some of Tiffany and Company’s finest enameling. The Tiffany company made fifteen enameled vases for display at the fair. The largest of these, the Magnolia vase, is thought to be one of the most important pieces of American silver ever made; it is today in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Only four other enameled vases from the fair, including the Moss-Roses vase, are known to survive. The enameling skills of the Tiffany and Company workers reached their zenith at the time of the 1893 fair. Having made their first enameled silver only fifteen years earlier, the silver shop under the direction of Edward C. Moore worked studiously during the 1880s to develop a new style of enameling and succeeded brilliantly. The company’s signature enamel style included pastel colors with a soft matte finish. Their enameled exhibition pieces like this one were so admired that this style of enameling became known as “American Enamel.”

JEWELRY Apocalyptic Horse Pendant and Torque Wifredo Lam, 1972 Offered by Didier Ltd
Interestingly, this piece of jewelry is both a sculpture and an anti-war protest. The Cuban-born surrealist Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) was one of several artists invited to present jewelry at a trade fair held at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in 1972. Working with his friend, the Milanese jewelry designer Anny di Gennaro, he created ten pieces based on imagery in his paintings.

This pendant, executed in eighteen-carat white, yellow, and rose gold, along with actual horsehair, takes the form of a winged horse inspired by those ridden by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. A solitary arm representing a horseman and connecting the pendant to the torque extends upward, within its hand is a ballistic missile that has been prevented from hitting its mark.

ENGLISH FURNITURE A “Japanned” George I Bureau-Bookcase English, ca. 1725 Offered by Apter-Fredericks
A taste for chinoiserie has been a recurring fashion in English and Continental decorative arts since the mid-seventeenth century, when Europe began to trade in earnest with Asia. The style first reached an aesthetic crescendo in Britain in the 1720s during the reign of George I—about the time this bureau-bookcase was made. The surface of the bureau is covered in red japanning—an enamel-like finish meant to imitate lacquer and originally very glossy— and a wonderfully fanciful and ebullient array of decorative motifs that interpret Chinese art and iconography and give the piece its stand-out character. Among them are a parrot on a circular perch, an aristocratic woman sitting in a carriage drawn by a deer, a vase filled with lush flowers, and a figure— possibly a diety—riding a dragon. Significantly, the finials and other metalwork are original. Only the bun feet have been replaced—as often happens with examples of this furniture form. The piece also has an interesting provenance that is particularly noteworthy in the context of its presentation at The Winter Show. The bureau was once owned by John and Sarah Bulkley and kept in their Park Avenue mansion. Both were deeply involved in philanthropic endeavors. Sarah served for several years as vice president of the New York Y.W.C.A. and Jonathan, a principal in a paper manufacturing firm, served for a time as president of the East Side House Settlement, the founding organization of The Winter Show.

Mapmakers working in the Netherlands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are an often-overlooked subset of the Old Masters. From roughly 1570 to 1670—in what has become known as the golden age of Dutch cartography—enormous advances in mapmaking were made that combined the most up-to-date scientific knowledge and geographical discoveries with rich ornamentation and artistic imagery. These two globes of ca. 1648—one terrestrial, the other celestial—were, at 26 inches in diameter, the largest ever made at the time. Their size and grandeur reflect the confidence and wealth of a great maritime and trading nation at the height of its powers. Created in Amsterdam to the design of cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1517-1638) with substantial updates by his son, Johannes (1596-1673), the globes were meant to be luxury items intended for the nobility and the most prosperous members of the merchant class. Each globe was both a monument to Dutch enterprise and ingenuity and a tool—to be used as much as admired.

EUROPEAN DECORATIVE ARTS Enamel Ewer Sèvres Manufactory, 1849 Offered by Michele Beiny, Inc.
The Sèvres Manufactory is renowned for its porcelain, but for a few decades in the nineteenth century the factory produced enameled metalware alongside its splendid ceramics. In 1849, the enamels studio under the direction of Jacob Meyer-Heine created this two-foot-tall ewer, executed to a design by the master artist of Sèvres, Jules Diéterle. The allegorical figures and cherubs were painted by Henri-Pierre Picou. The ewer was one of a number of pieces that the directors of Sèvres chose to showcase the excellence of the Manufactory’s work in London in 1851 at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, held in Hyde Park at the so-called Crystal Palace designed by Joseph Paxton. Sèvres proved popular with the English audience. Queen Victoria was a buyer, as were the members of a royal commission established to assemble the founding collection of what is now the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This ewer is one of the Sèvres items they purchased.The royal commissioners also bought another, smaller enamel Sèvres ewer that is still in the V&A collection. This ewer was deaccessioned at a London auction house in 1939—perhaps mistakenly—“on the disposal grounds of being a duplicate.” It is not, and now it is on offer in New York.

AMERICAN FURNITURE Chippendale Sofa Massachusetts, ca. 1765 Offered by Bernard and S. Dean Levy Inc.
One of the most exciting and rare forms in American Chippendale furniture is the ball-and-claw footed sofa, and this one, with its double-peaked serpentine back and fully carved front and side skirts, is a unique example of colonial New England cabinetmaking. The sofa has been attributed to the Boston or North Shore area based on a number of features. Clues include decorative traits such as the high profile of the foot, an elliptical ball, and the slight raking to the longish and thin claws. In addition, the secondary woods used on the sofa, white pine and maple, were readily available local lumbers that often appear in furniture from this area. Decorative carving on the piece also suggests the Boston area.

Although the motifs are not identical to related examples, the nature of the carving, which is in relative low relief, and angular terminals, relates closely to the carving on a group of chairs once attributed to the Newburyport cabinetmaker Sewell Short. As well, the shape of the rear legs with their slight flare at the base are identical to the rear feet of two ball-and-claw foot settees, one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Coincidentally, this sofa was once owned by the legendary turn-of-the-century Connecticut collector George S. Palmer, whose gifts helped make possible the establishment of the Met’s American Wing.

AMERICAN PAINTING Portrait of a Boy Albert Bloch, 1911 Offered by Jonathan Boos
Born in St. Louis, Albert Bloch (1882-1961) was the only American associated with the Blue Rider group (Der Blaue Reiter) of progressive German and Russian artists based in Munich near the turn of the last century. He received little formal art training and worked early in his career as an illustrator for a literary magazine. Its editor encouraged him to travel to Europe to further his artistic career and paid for his passage abroad in 1908. Bloch settled in Munich and during the fall of 1911 met Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Kandinsky invited Bloch to exhibit his works in the first Blue Rider exhibition held at the Thannhauser Gallery from December 18, 1911-January 1, 1912.
Bloch contributed six oils to the show—a landmark event in the history of modernism. Portrait of a Boy was Bloch’s first painting to be exhibited in Europe—shown a month earlier at the Berlin Secession exhibition of 1911, alongside paintings by Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, André Derain, Ferdinand Hodler, Georges Braque, Lyonel Feininger, Pablo Picasso, and others. Bloch also exhibited this radical and bold early portrait at the first German Autumn Salon in 1913, widely considered one of the most important large-scale international exhibitions of modern art in Germany before World War I.

The 2020 Winter Show loan exhibition Unrivaled, curated by Philippe de Montebello and Peter Marino, reveals to visitors the enormous depth and quality of the collections of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library. No other institution in the world, even in Spain, can offer such a global vision of Spanish history, art, and culture spanning more than 4,000 years. The museum collection comprises 18,000 works of art from the Paleolithic Age to the 20th century, with numerous iconic paintings and sculpture by Spanish and Latin American masters, as well as superb examples from all of the decorative arts of the Hispanic world. With over 250,000 manuscripts, 35,000 rare books, and 200,000 modern books, its renowned library serves as an essential resource for research into the arts, literature, history, and culture of Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and the Philippines. The collection of prints and photographs preserves an invaluable visual record of Hispanic cultural patrimony with 17,000 prints

from the 16th to the 20th century, and over 100,000 historical photographs ranging from Philippine daguerreotypes of the 1840s up to the Hispanic Society’s photographic expeditions to Spain in the 1920s. In 2017, the Hispanic Society collections received their greatest imprimatur when the Prado Museum requested to be the inaugural venue for the major traveling exhibition Treasures from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, which attracted nearly 500,000 visitors in Madrid. Containing more than 200 masterworks, Treasures has since been seen by 250,000 visitors at the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, the Albuquerque Museum, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. The exhibition continues at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston from March 1 to May 25, 2020. The Hispanic Society Museum & Library, located on Audubon Terrace in Upper Manhattan, was founded in

1904 by the American scholar and philanthropist Archer M. Huntington (1870–1955) as a free public museum and library to promote the study of the rich artistic and cultural traditions of Spain and its area of influence in the Americas and throughout the world. The collections are unrivaled in their scope and quality outside the Iberian Peninsula, addressing nearly every aspect of culture in Spain, as well as much of Portugal, Latin America, and the Philippines. The Hispanic Society is not only the preeminent art museum and library dedicated to Hispanic culture in the United States, it also serves as the sole institution uniting all of the Hispanic and Latino populations through the common heritage of the Spanish language, history, and culture. Unrivaled presents visitors with a cross-sectional view of the Hispanic Society’s rich collections from antiquity to the 20th century. The earliest works in the exhibition, the striking black pottery lidded bowl, footed bowl, and dish that display intricate geometric incised decorations filled with white paste were produced by the Bell Beaker
culture in Andalusia during the 2nd half of the 3rd millennium BC (fig. 2). The name for this archaeological culture was derived from the invertedbell beaker drinking vessels which were the most characteristic forms of their ceramics that served as prestige items among the elites, demonstrating social status. The Maritime Bell Beaker culture spread north from the Iberian Peninsula through Western Europe to Ireland and Britain where they introduced copper metallurgy, using their ceramic pots to smelt copper ores. In antiquity, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands served as a crossroads of cultures from the Talayotic culture, Phoenicians, Celts, Iberians, Greeks, Carthaginians, to the Romans. A group of eight small bronze sculptures in the exhibition illustrates the presence of these cultures in ancient Iberia. Of exceptional quality and importance is the striding figure of the Egyptian deity Reshef (600s BC), an ancient Semitic god of war adopted by the Egyptians and the Phoenicians (fig. 4). Introduced in the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians, these

figures also have been associated with Melqart, the Phoenician god of the sea and commerce, at whose temple in Cadiz (Gadir) similar figures have been discovered. Other outstanding bronzes in the group come from the Balearic Islands of Menorca and Majorca: the Greek Winged Boar (ca. 500 BC); the Bull’s Head (299-100 BC) from the Talayotic culture, named after the stone towers (talayots) they erected on Menorca; and the Roman Nike or Victory (0-199 AD). The collection also includes significant marble sculptures from Andalusia, such as the Portrait Head of a Julio-Claudian Imperial Princess, Perhaps Julia Drusilla (30-50 AD), believed to have come from Asido Caesarina, modern Medina Sidonia; and the refined Male Torso (100-199 AD), characteristic of the workshops at Italica (Santiponce), the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Trajan. Typifying the cultural diversity of medieval Spain are works from “The Three Cultures”: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. The history of the Jews in Spain dates back at least to the early Roman period, and by the Middle Ages they were the largest and most prosperous Jewish community in Europe. A rare artefact from this era is the fragment of a Sefer Torah, Numbers 16:28-29:18, from Andalusia which dates from the 1200s to 1400s (fig. 3). The Hebrew text is written on calfskin on 44 ruled lines on three columns and 45 lines on the first column of the text at right. The date of the manuscript is tentative but is based on comparable Sefer Torah fragments with a provenance to Spain, such as the brown patina of the skin and the shape of the tagin (decorative “crowns” above letters). A Royal Grant issued by John II, King of Castile and León (1405-1454), exemplifies a form of medieval royal grant or charter on parchment unique to the Christian kingdoms of Spain. Here John II grants Pedro Fernández de Velasco, 1st Count of Haro, and his heirs in perpetuity, the administrative and

judicial jurisdiction of Castilla la Vieja. These royal privileges, known in Spanish as privilegios rodados, take their name from the signo rodado, or king’s seal that appears within a large circle or “wheel,” which served as a confirmation of authenticity of the document. The impressive illuminated signo rodado of John II, at the bottom center of the document, displays the royal coat-of-arms of Castile and León surrounded by the name of the king within a circular band, and at the bottom the lead seal of the king hangs from the original red, green, blue, and yellow silk threads.
Manises lusterware quickly became the luxury ceramic of the European elite and by the 15th century adapted primarily European decorative motifs. The plate (before 1478), decorated with the “ivy leaf” design painted in cobalt and luster favored by Italian patrons, is emblazoned in the center with the arms of the Nori family of Florence, specifically Francesco Nori (1430-1478) who directed the Medici Bank in Florence. Another plate (ca. 1525-1575) from the last phase of Manises lusterware, boldly displays a rider on a caparisoned horse surrounded by a stylized “ivy leaf” motif (fig. 5).
The arts of al-Andalus, Islamic Spain, are extensively represented in all media in the collection of the Hispanic Society, and no better expression can be found than in these superb examples of tinglazed lusterware produced by Muslim potters working in Manises (Valencia) during the 14th to 16th centuries. An albarello or pharmacy jar (ca. 1390), displaying Islamic decorative motifs that include pseudo-Arabic script in the top and middle bands, dates from the earliest period of production.
One of the greatest strengths of the museum and library collections is the wealth of exceptional works from Spain’s Golden Age of the 16th and 17th centuries. The library’s collection of manuscript nautical charts and atlases spanning the 15th to 18th centuries is recognized as one of the finest in the world. A prime example is the Portolan Chart of the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Atlantic from Finisterre to Cape Nun (Majorca, 1552) by the Majorcan cartographer Bartolomeo Olives (fl. 1538-1585). 78

Prominently displayed in the exhibition are masterworks from the Hispanic Society’s renowned collection of paintings by Spain’s most celebrated Old Masters: El Greco, Doménikos Theotokópoulos (1541-1614); Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664); and Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660). Among the seven works by El Greco at the Hispanic Society, the deceptively simple composition of Saint Luke (1590s) from his mature period at Toledo, displays his confident brushwork and modeling of the face and hand of the patron saint of artists. Francisco de Zurbarán’s Saint Lucy (ca. 1630), the patron saint of the blind, formed part of Louis-Phillipe’s Galerie Espagnole at the Louvre from 1838-1848 (fig. 7). Characteristic of Zurbarán’s female saints, Saint Lucy appears elegantly dressed in shimmering silk fabrics. The brilliant portrait by Velázquez of Camillo Astalli, known as Cardinal Pamphili (Rome, 1650-1651) stands among the best of the best (fig. 1). From his second trip to Italy (1649-1651) where he painted some of his finest portraits, Camillo Astalli epitomizes the pictorial genius of
Velázquez and his amazing technique. In the 17th century, Spanish polychrome sculpture reached an unparalleled level of quality and realism. Luisa Roldán (1652-1706) was the most important Spanish sculptor of her era and the first major woman sculptor in Spain. The dramatic realism of her polychromed terracottas, Head of Saint John the Baptist (Madrid, 16921706) and Head of Saint Paul (Madrid, 1692-1706), attest to her brilliance as a sculptor, for which she was appointed sculptor to the royal court. Exceptional works of the decorative arts from 17th-century Portugal and Portuguese India also can be seen here. Recognized for its finely painted blue on white tin-glazed earthenware and tiles, Portugal produced some truly extraordinary pieces, such as this rare Aquamanile in the Form of a Portuguese Female Dragon (1625-1650). At first glance the exotic form appears to be sphinxlike, but it actually represents a coca, the female dragon of Portuguese and Galician folklore that fights Saint George (fig. 6). Workshops in Portuguese India provided numerous

luxury goods for export to Europe, from Bengali embroidered tussar silk quilts and Gujarati mother-of-pearl dishes to Goan cabinets inlaid with ebony and ivory and silver filigree caskets. The diminutive Goan silver filigree casket (1600s) on exhibition is a rare example that retains its original shagreencovered case. The arts of the Americas and the Philippines on exhibition encompass the fine and decorative arts, cartography, and photography. A Cuzco School painting of The Presentation in the Temple (1700s), with the characteristic overlay of designs in gold leaf on garments, glows in a spectacular original frame composed of hundreds of iridescent shell segments. The Peruvian box covered with tortoise shell and mother-of-pearl marquetry of floral and foliate motifs (early 1700s) was inspired by export wares from India and the Far East. A Philippine chest (ca. 1700) of narra wood is a rare survivor from the Manila Galleon Trade. Carved with Asian floral and foliate motifs, combined with lions and birds, these chests made in the Philippines were

used to transport luxury goods on the Manila Galleon, and the chests then were sold to the viceregal elite to ornament their palaces. The pair of plaques known as mayas (Bolivia), were displayed upright on altars to reflect candlelight. At the center is a double-tailed siren, surrounded by undulating stems of stylized sunflowers and tails of serpent dragons, all popular motifs found on silverwork from Alto Peru. Puebla, Mexico, has been known for its tin-glazed earthenware and tiles since the 17th century, and the impressive Tile Panel of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception (ca. 1798) is a superb manifestation of its fame. Two historically significant charts from North and South America reflect two different worlds. Elizabeth Bermingham’s impressive Chart of the Atlantic Coast of North America from South Carolina to Florida and the Eastern Caribbean (Charleston, South Carolina?, 1727) is the earliest nautical chart produced by a woman in the Americas. To date we know nothing of her life, although we can conjecture that her family was involved in trade

between Charleston and the Eastern Caribbean. The spectacular Map of the Ucayali River (Peru, ca. 1808-1812) depicts one of the most remote regions of Peru in the Amazonian rainforest (fig. 8 detail). Prepared by Franciscan missionaries with the assistance of indigenous artists, the map graphically portrays the fauna of the Ucayali (manatee, bears, boars, jaguars, llamas, monkeys, turtles, and parrots), and the indigenous peoples in scenes of hunting and fishing, along with their inherent perils. The legend at the bottom identifies the Franciscan missions established up to 1807, the Ucayali tributaries, and the areas inhabited by the indigenous peoples: Anti (Asháninka), Cashibo, Chontaquiro, Conibo, Ipitineri, Panobo, Shetibo, and Shipibo. Captivating albumen photographs from the Philippines and Chile provide a glimpse into the Hispanic Society’s vast collection of nearly 100,000 historic photographs. The portrait of a serene young woman of astounding beauty, Mestiza Sangley/Woman of Chinese
and Filipino Ancestry (Manila, ca. 1875), by the Dutch photographer Francisco van Camp (active Manila, 1870s), must be considered one of the greatest portraits of the 19th century (fig. 9). The Canadian photographer Obder W. Heffer Bissett (1860-1945), a founder of ethnographic photography in Chile, captured the haunting image of a traditional Mapuche cemetery (ca. 1890) in south central Chile. In the photograph a Mapuche elder is surrounded by chemamülles, monumental wooden crosses and statues that reflect the spirit of the deceased. Four important works by 19th- and 20th-century Spanish and North American masters complete the survey of paintings. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), is represented by five paintings, twelve drawings, and the majority of his prints in first editions. The portrait of his friend Pedro Mocarte (ca. 1805-1806), a professional singer at the Toledo Cathedral depicted in the costume of a bullfighter, serves as a prime example of Goya’s work

before the Napoleonic invasion (fig. 10). A surprising work by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), Dwarf with a Mastiff, after Velázquez (1879-1880), comes from his trip to Spain in 1879 where he studied and copied paintings by Velázquez at the Prado. Sargent retained this painting in his studio through his career as a source for inspiration. During Sargent’s lifetime the original painting at the Prado was considered the work of Velázquez, but today is attributed to a follower. The Hispanic Society is acclaimed for its collection of over 200 paintings, gouaches, and drawings by the early 20th-century Valencian master Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923). Famed for his sun-drenched beach scenes that are prized by collectors, Sorolla’s Children on the Beach (1908), a major work from the peak of his career, exemplifies his reputation as the “painter of light” (fig. 11). A significant modern work by the Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies i Puig (19232012) completes the exhibition. Tàpies introduced abstract painting in Spain in the 1950s with his “matter” paintings that incorporated earth, stone, and other

non-traditional materials. These mixed media paintings with thick impasto and highly textured surfaces, such as Relleu amb grises i sienes/Relief with Grays and Siennas (1961), secured his international reputation as one of the most important Spanish artists of the second half of the 20th century. The ‘Ghost flag’ Hong Punchbowl Qianlong period circa 1787-88 American Market Diameter: 14 inches; 35.5cm This remarkable bowl shows a view of the Hongs (‘foreign factories’) in Canton. It can be dated very precisely as it has had the US flag painted over (or at least its outline) in one location and repainted in a second place. The US offices moved their main activites from one place to the next, 1787-88. Other bowls are known with the US flag in either position.

Shortly thereafter, we acquired approximately 1300 antique and vintage rugs from the estate of Albert Keshishian, owner of The Levant in the Rockridge neighborhood Oakland, California. Albert’s father, Hadji, founded the Levant in 1927. Between downsizing in San Francisco and setting up shop in Oakland, we have chosen to take the 2020 Winter Show off and rejoin you in 2021 for our 26th year at the show. TO HAVE AN IMPACT— EAST SIDE HOUSE STARTS EARLY East Side House’s students just got a little younger. This year, in response to community need, East Side House will begin serving children as young as 18 months old in our federally funded Head Start/Early Head Start programs. It is never too young to begin developing the minds of our littlest learners and fostering their appetite for education! East Side House is proud to announce that we received direct funding from the federal government to provide high-quality education for our youngest learners. East Side House was selected for this $3.5-million grant based on its successful track record of providing effective and innovative strategies for lifelong learning.
Family Engagement
Extended Day Learning
Since parents are the first and most important teachers, at East Side House we focus on engaging and supporting them from day one. We provide learning opportunities that help parents to better themselves and to improve their economic standing. We also invite parents to become deeply involved in their children’s education by observing classroom activities, attending workshops about how to encourage learning both at home and on the go, as well as participating in our Family Literacy and Math nights. “By the time children graduate from our early education program,” explained Dawn Heyward, Deputy Director of Early Childhood Education, “the families also graduate with new skills, resources, and training that moves them towards selfsufficiency.” Our commitment to family engagement has been so successful that we were selected as the model for family services by the National Head Start Association.
In response to the data showing that children from low-income families typically enter pre-school already behind their more affluent counterparts, East Side House created the STEAMMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Music, Movement) Academy. Every day after school, students engage in an additional three hours of enriching activities to improve their academic and social skills. Activities include creating gardens, playing computer-based arithmetic games, reading with neighborhood seniors, engaging in literacy activities, and participating in outdoor games. Not only does the extended day enhance their development, but it provides a safe place for children while parents are at work.

A Weekend in Nantucket
After a successful year as the 2019 Loan Exhibitor at The Winter Show, the Nantucket Historical Association was eager to further their support of East Side House. They rolled out the red carpet for some of our young people and hosted them for a weekend over the summer. The group had the opportunity to tour the Nantucket Whaling Museum, giving them insight into the local culture, as well as explore the impact of the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements on the town’s history. We are so grateful to the Nantucket Historical Association for setting up this trip and showing our curious young adults around the town.

Shining Star Paola Rosa
“Be patient, we are not meant to run in anyone else’s race other than our own.”
Twenty-year-old Paola Rosa offered this advice to peers at the graduation ceremony at Bronx Haven High School. Having herself attended three high schools before finding support from East Side House, Rosa learned this lesson firsthand. At her first two schools, Rosa was suspended after falling into a routine of skipping classes and causing trouble with peers. She felt that she was failing herself and, what was worse, she explained, she felt that she was failing her mother, her greatest advocate. After what seemed like a dead end, Rosa took a deep breath and decided she must make a change. She threw herself into the pursuit of earning a high school diploma. The path was not easy. After identifying a school she thought could help her, it was announced that the school was closing.

Rosa remembers how deflated and discouraged she felt that day. Nonetheless, she presented her transcript to school after school—only to be told she would never be able to graduate on time. At Bronx Haven High School, however, an East Side House student advisor told her that if she was willing to put in the work, they could help her meet her goal. In Bronx Haven High School, Rosa found a perfect match: The staff were supportive and the students were just like her. She was excited at the prospect of finally reaching her goal and, even more, of learning about Post-Secondary Pathways, a program where students can earn certifications in health care in conjunction with their high school degrees. Previously, Rosa had been told she was setting her sights too high by considering a career in healthcare; this time she was being prodded to challenge herself. What a difference!

Despite her desire to graduate and her involvement with PSP, she still struggled when she got to Bronx Haven High School. The story does not end there, however. Rosa hit a snag when a personal situation led to her missing nearly two weeks of school. The East Side House staff reached out and gave her the reality check she needed. “They’re on top of you to make sure you get to school,” she mused. Though she fell behind in one of her requisite classes, her advisor remembers her staying at school even later than him to get caught up. “She did not stop; she just kept going until she got to her destination,” he observed.

This past January, Paola graduated not only with her high school diploma but also a Phlebotomy Certification through ESH’s partnership with CUNY Lehman College and a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification. Having obtained this training and knowledge, Paola is well prepared for her next steps in a promising health care career. Looking forward, she is committed to building her knowledge and her credentials at CUNY’s Hostos Community College. She hopes also to buy a house she can share with her mother. East Side House gave her the chance to prove herself. Reflecting on her experience, Rosa said, “Sometimes, things aren’t easy for kids like us, and there are some opportunities we just don’t get. But East Side House gave me options, and I would not be where I am right now if it were not for that support.”

Frames that Border on Perfection Forming my company in 1983 was the beginning of a very full and rewarding career. My goal all along was not to focus on technology but to return to a time when a frame was as much a work of art as the painting itself. Today my company is composed of a team of twenty-five highly skilled craftspersons including 15 extraordinary frame conservators.
The detail on this 12 x 21 foot frame is spectacular and is surmounted by an elaborate crest twelve feet across displaying a carved eagle, flags, pikes, a banner and other regalia.
Each frame we create is historically accurate. The centuriesold process of carving, gilding and creating flawless finishes have been mastered by our artisans.
