The Editor
For many, the prospect of a New Year can be daunting sometimes but I recently came across this quote which I quite liked: The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Gilbert K. Chesterton

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings "They knelt down and paid [Jesus] homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh." (Matthew 2:11 NRSV) At Christmas we celebrate the nativity of the Christ child. On 6th January, we celebrate Epiphany (Christ's revelation to the wise men who represent all the nations of the world). The story is very familiar to us, dramatised in nativity plays everywhere. The feast of the Epiphany is a celebration that God is the God of all – Jews and Gentiles; that he will accept what we have to offer and that he freely gives his salvation to all who turn to him. God sees us and accepts us just as we are. This is tremendously good news – as Paul puts it in Colossians, "In [Christ] there is neither Greek or Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian slave or free, but Christ is all, and in all." [Colossians 3:11 NRSV] Those wise men were not Jews; they journeyed to Bethlehem representing the world outside Israel. They have become kings; they have
been depicted as representing youth, maturity, and old age; they have been given the features of different races; they have been named – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The gifts as interpreted: gold for kingship, frankincense for (Old Testament) priesthood and myrrh for preparation for burial, bring a sombre note reminding us of the roles Jesus encompassed and his eventual death. The Epiphany, the manifestation of the glory of God to the whole world is a sign that God accepts people of all nations. He accepts people like us. The story of the Epiphany is not just a simple story. Matthew wrote his Gospel for Jewish people: set in Bethlehem because this was David's city and Jesus was a direct descendent of King David through his father Joseph. These astrologers "observed his star at its rising" and, employing the wisdom of their time, interpreted this as a sign of a great ruler's birth. Matthew knew that the prophet Isaiah had predicted that " nations shall come to your light and kings to the brightness of your dawn. They shall bring gold and

frankincense" [Isaiah 60: 3 & 6]. The Epiphany is no magical and ultimately meaningless legend about beautiful babies and visiting strangers. It is very much more valuable than that. The Wise Men saw beyond the obvious and realised the very presence of God in their midst. We too are called to recognise his presence here and now, not in some future, golden time; in the humble, ordinariness of our own surroundings. We are here for good reasons: to be one with God; to help transform life on earth from within; to participate in the work of creation and redemption; to make God's presence and glory manifest in the world; and to tell others, so that they might share in our hope.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times 2017 was a roller-coaster year ending my time as a Moray Councillor and moving from Holyrood to Westminster. Fingers crossed 2018 will be more settled! I hope you enjoyed the festive season, spending precious time with friends and family and got the chance to have a bit of time off. As I head back to London I will continue to focus on getting the best deal that I can for Moray. Among the issues I will be seeking to improve will be better broadband, action on delivery charges and promoting the Moray Growth Deal. I will also continue to support vital industries and communities in our area such as farming and fishing in whatever way I can. As usual, myself and my staff will be working hard to support constituents with any issues they may have from my office in Moray. Please feel free to drop in or phone 01309 679253.
In the run up to Christmas, my colleague Richard Lochhead MSP has launched a campaign to end the rip-off delivery surcharges across Scotland. The problem of high delivery charges for consumers in remote or rural areas continues to cause hardship for many of my constituents and businesses in the Highlands and Islands – an area that is impacted more than any other part of the UK. As someone who has lived and grown up in the Highlands, I have always thought that it is completely unfair that consumers in rural and remote areas pay more for delivery than anywhere else in the UK. Please support the campaign by singing the petition and if you have a story to tell please share it with us: www.fairdeliverycharges.scot
Happy New Year! I hope you managed to have an enjoyable and peaceful festive period. Every year I run a Christmas Card Competition which raises money for a charity which does great work in Moray. I opened up the opportunity to every child in the constituency to draw a “family and friends” themed picture. This year the winner was Lewis Mackenzie (11) from Applegrove Primary and his picture was on the front of my Christmas card. The charity I received donations from local businesses for this year was Alzheimer Scotland. They do great work in raising awareness of, and supporting people with, dementia. My staff and I recently underwent “Dementia Friends” training which gave us a better understanding of how to deal with people who have dementia. It’s a great scheme and if you haven’t done the training (which is all available free and online at www.dementiafriendsscotland.org) then I would highly recommend it.

Reader, God did not give the Ten Commandments as a means of approach and acceptance with Him if you kept them, but to show you that you cannot keep them, because you are a sinner and separated by your sins from Him. You have a need of a Saviour, that your sins might be washed away. All have sinned, all need the Saviour which is Christ the Lord. He alone is the way, the truth and the life the only way back to God for you. Do you know the Lord Jesus as your Saviour?

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
GreenThumb, About us and looking towards the New Year. Our small team of 4, based here in the Moray Firth, will have a busy year ahead as we will have over 1,100 regular customers presenting us with their lawn problems. Sounds a lot, but we are a pretty small franchise up here though. GreenThumb across the UK will have 500,000 customers this year! As we will be providing local monthly updates as the season unfolds through the year again in this magazine, we thought it might be nice to let you see where we are based.
Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include:
Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, sometimes causing devastation.
Spring Months Weed kiill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Spring 2017 was lovely, but a nice Spring has been a rarity recently..
Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). We’ve had 2 wet Summers in a row now.
Autumn Months Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. Alastair Watt
For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per treatment, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairn and cover the whole Moray Firth area. (Psalm 86:5)
Reader, it is those who willingly choose the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour through repentance of their sins and faith in His atoning death, that He willingly bestows salvation upon. In God’s Family there are no conscripts; all have called upon God for salvation through Jesus Christ His Son. You must receive Him for yourself. Genuine repentance and salvation will always have a turning away from sin. All who call upon the name of The Lord shall be saved. Are you saved?

Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.
program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting activities, play and positive experiences. Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.
Worried about a loved one and their substance use? Friends, family or others connected to an individual
nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.
Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment
a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey. We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.
Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.

DON’T prune Plum and Cherry trees at this time of year. Pruning puts them at risk of Silverleaf disease, so they should be pruned mid-summer. DON’T fertilize your plants in your garden or inside your house at this time of year. Most plants are having a rest at the moment, and you really don’t want to be encouraging tender new growth. DON’T cut back any herbaceous perennials that have attractive seed heads left on them. Many also use their old foliage to protect the crown of the plant over the winter, so whilst there are some plants that do need cutting back, it is not right for every plant.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. We’re right in the middle of winter now, yet despite this there is a lot we can be doing in the garden at the moment. Not only is it a good excuse to get a bit of exercise outside, but some work done in the garden now can really reap rewards once spring arrives. I created a number of new beds in my back garden this year and at the moment I am taking the opportunity to really make sure there are no remnants of weeds in there waiting to burst into life in a few months. I’m also cutting neat edges in the beds and clearing the last of any debris like dead leaves and twigs out. Here are some other jobs to be getting on with in the garden in January:
DO prune Apple and Pear trees. This needn’t be an intimidating job, check out my blog for some step-by-step instructions for pruning small trees. Remember, the final form of an Apple tree should look a bit like a bowl, and a Pear tree should resemble the shape of a Champagne flute. A blackbird should be able to happily fly between the branches of both once you have finished. DO keep the birds fed. Put out a variety of feed if you can, and try to make some water available. I have a ‘pond’ in a Belfast sink which has various stones around and within it to allow birds to use it as birdbath. I free the pond of any ice each morning. DO think about new plans for your garden. Now is the perfect time for new landscaping jobs such as building your own compost heap, or getting help with new designs or

At this time of year, keep an eye out for emerging bulbs and enthusiastic perennials coming back to life. It can get a bit dreary at this time of year and it is always nice to be reminded of the spring and summer riot of emerging life that is just round the corner!

FORRES NAIRN & DISTRICT RDA The Forres Nairn and District Group of Riding for the Disabled Association, which helps local young people cope with their disabilities, first came into being over 35 years ago, following an appeal from the local support group for people with learning difficulties. 1981 was the International Year for the Disabled and the Forres & Nairn Support Group for people with learning difficulties were asked what they would chose if they were given a blank cheque they chose to ask for a local RDA group. And so, in 1982, the local group, (part of a large National & International organisation) came into being. Forres women, Heather Fotheringham and Beth Garrow, were the driving forces behind the creation of the new group and enlisted Joanna McGregor from Nairn, who became the first organiser.
therapeutic benefits that it brings. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Hamish and Polly Lochore, the group have always been able to take advantage of the indoor and outdoor arenas at Burgie Eventing Centre. The group meets every Monday morning (during termtime) and hold four rides - each catering for eight children from local primary and secondary schools. They have a wide range of disabilities but once on the ponies their conditions are often much less obvious. For many it is the highlight of their week and they are able to achieve a freedom and movement that they may not experience in their day to day life. They have great pleasure in small successes and enjoy having their trust in their pony returned. The benefits of the session lasts well beyond the Monday morning, with feedback from parents and school telling us of improved muscle tone, better concentration and motivation to persevere at tasks.
The group has gone from strength to strength since then and now helps 32 youngsters every week to enjoy riding and the
The benefits of riding include:
» Improved strength and balance » Hand eye co-ordination » Improved muscle tone » Increased self confidence » Encouraging speech and language "At RDA, therapy is often disguised as an opportunity to have fun. In fact recent research into rider outcomes shows that after just 12 weeks 74% demonstrated physical improvement, 77% experienced greater confidence and 75% more enjoyment. 65% showed a greater willingness and ability to communicate, 72% showed improved relationship building skills and 78% demonstrated clear advances in horsemanship."

equipment that some of the children need. We rely on a small army of volunteers , including the gentlemen who drive the Osprey bus to collect and return the children from the Forres schools. We also need an average of three helpers per child - one to lead the pony and two to walk alongside. So we are always looking for new volunteers who can spend an hour or two to come and help. You need no experience as full training will be given.
We are fortunate to have well-trained ponies, two dedicated and professional Instructors plus a group of local volunteers who give their time as leaders for the ponies, side-walkers and fund-raisers. However, we are the only RDA group in Scotland that make no charge to the riders or schools and with each session costing in excess of £400 in pony hire, instruction and insurance, our fund-raising efforts are continuous. We also raise all funds to purchase equipment such as hardhats, saddlery and specialist

Sweet and Sour Sauce You've tasted it at the takeaway, but you can make it far better at home! Sweet and sour sauce is a great way to add flavour and sweetness to many dishes and can be used in almost all protein based dishes.
Ingredients: 1 Large knob of ginger 2 Cloves garlic 5 Star anise 1 White onion 1 Red onion 1 Green pepper 1 Tin pineapple or 1/4fresh
200ml White vinegar 200ml Orange juice 200ml Coca cola 150g Granulated sugar 4tbsp Tomato puree Pinch Salt and Pepper 2/3tbsp cornflour
Method: 1.Using the tip of a tea spoon peal the knob of ginger, chop into fine matchsticks. Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves, onions and pepper.
2.Put vinegar, sugar, cola, tomato puree and star anise in a heavy based saucepan and heat.
3.Taste as you go adding more vinegar or sugar accordingly to get the balance right. 4.Add in the ginger, garlic, onions and pepper and let simmer for 5-10minutes. 5.Add pineapple. mix the cornflour with a little cold water and make a smooth paste. Add the paste to the simmering sauce and stir until thick. This will take a few minutes as the flour will need to cook out. This sauce goes well with either prawns, chicken or pork and served with rice.
Enjoy!and Happy 2018
