We often hear the phrase “life is short”. It is indeed a strange phenomemon that time definitely seems to speed up the older we get. When I was a bit younger (ok - a lot younger!) I studied a few years of Latin and my old Latin teacher (Mr Cook) was a great advocate of the philosophy of ‘Seize the Day’ or ‘Carpe Diem’ in the original Latin.

I’m not sure whether I have always been true to this through my life but it has ever been my aspiration. On the occasion where I have not ‘Carpe Diem’ it has often left me with a sense of regret and we do want to avoid regret don’t we!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings HOSPITALITY Everyone you meet will live forever! Are you a hospitable person? You would probably be embarrassed to reply in the negative. “Of course I am hospitable,” I hear you say. Hospitality is found all over the Bible but it almost always ties it to aliens/strangers, people not like us. It’s about opening our lives and homes to people who believe differently than we do. Why would God be so serious about hospitality? Even when we were living as His enemies, He came and opened the door, inviting us into His presence. Often the best actions to take are the hardest ones to do, so take a risk and greet people. CS Lewis famously observed, “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilisations ~ these are mortal and their life to ours is as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit ~ immortal horrors or everlasting splendours.” Everyone you meet will live forever, so take an interest in them.
This present age of unbelief that characterises our Scottish society, may feel big and intimidating for the church, but it’s simply a small subplot in a bigger, better story ~ the greatest story ever told! There is a gaping chasm between God’s story and our stories. It’s the flashy acts, the kind of stuff we photograph and post online to show our friends so that as many as possible will ‘like’ them, that go most noticed yet require least from us. In contrast, taking a risk to be genuinely hospitable requires courage because it forces us to rely on our Lord and His strength, not our own. When we open up our homes and build friendships with those who do not look like us, believe like us or act like us, we open up our lives and make ourselves vulnerable. When inviting someone for a meal, remember that food is God’s love made edible! Jesus said, ‘When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, lest they also invite you in return and are repaid’ ~ Luke 14:12 (ESV). In other words, Jesus says, don’t just be hospitable to impress. I am reminded of the young church

couple who invited an aged elder for dinner. While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the elder asked their son what was for dinner. “Goat,” the little boy replied. “Goat!” exclaimed the startled elder, “Are you sure?” “Yeah,” said the lad, “I heard dad say to mum this morning, that today was as good a day as any to have the old goat for dinner.” So greet the people that you see today, ask good questions and try and open up your home to them. Even when we cannot always use our homes, there is a hospitality of mind that we can exercise. When we open our heart by having a sympathetic ear and to make room in our heart for the story of hurt, pain, sorrow and loneliness which some who are comparative strangers may not want to tell us, this is a practical hospitality not to be despised or neglected by us. Trust God to use your weak hospitality today to show His power and remember ~ everyone you meet will live forever! Alan Macdonald Forres

Youration invit to ana Course Alph Alpha is an opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal environment. A new course starts on Wednesday, 4th September, 2019 at 7pm to 9pm with a welcome meal. Come and join us at Forres Baptist Church, Clovenside Chapel, Clovenside Road, Forres. IV36 3BT An Alpha Course is a relaxed, low key and friendly way to explore the Christian faith. Here are just a few of the issues we will be exploring together:Is there more to life than this? Who is Jesus? Why did he die? Probably the most important part of an Alpha Course is the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and discuss it in a small group. There is no obligation to say anything. It is an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment. For more information and video clips visit alpha.org To sign up or find out more contact: Rachael Cheverton on 01667 455273 or email contactforresbaptist@gmail.com

Parliament Blog & Tide Times I was pleased to host a round table event in the library at Elgin recently where I invited members of the various community councils from across Moray. This allowed us to come together and share concerns and topical issues both here in Moray and at Westminster. It was good to hear their views and I was delighted that we were able to discuss a number of issues around the table. I’ve received some positive feedback on this engagement and I’m hopeful this will become a more frequent event. Summer is here, I’m looking forward to being back in Moray for the recess and meeting up with constituents from across the area during my forthcoming surgery tour. People can come along without an appointment and raise any issues or concerns with me. Watch out for adverts in the local press with details of specific times and venues. Finally, by the time this article is published, the leadership election of the Conservative Party will be nearing a conclusion. I can guarantee that whoever is successful and becomes the next Prime Minister will be getting regular updates from me about the issues that are concerning people here in Moray. As always, I can be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or on 01309 679253 or at 63 High Street, Forres IV36 1PB.
In recent months, we have seen a number of wildfires take hold in Moray and I have seen first-hand the blackened landscapes and the extent of the damage caused. I know that the increasing frequency of these fires locally is causing real concern in our rural communities, given the impact wildfires have on local landscapes, wildlife and habitats, as well as the potential threat they pose to infrastructure and homes. These recent fires were brought under control thanks to a monumental effort from local fire fighters, who worked alongside the police, gamekeepers, estate workers and other community volunteers, who rallied around to extinguish the fires under challenging conditions. I have had discussions with Police Scotland and the Fire and Rescue Service about the need to be better prepared for wildfires, given that we expect to have more long, dry spells of weather in the future.

TheIsle of Harris Gibson by Tommy Cummins of Discount Suit Company, London, UK. "A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail."
INGREDIENTS: 60ml Isle of Harris Gin 10ml of Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry (Dry) 10ml of Juniper and Sea Kelp infused vinegar. Pickling onions
ME THODOLOGY: 1. Pour 400ml of White Distilled Vinegar into a Kilner jar. 2. Add a handful of Greek Juniper berries plus a handful and a pinch of dried Kelp. 3. Add pickling onions (e.g. Silverskin, Pearl), seal jar and leave to infuse for 10 days. 4. Add ice to an already chilled mixing glass. 5. Pour in the gin, vermouth and vinegar before mixing with a teardrop bar spoon. 6. Julep strain into a chilled vintage coupette glass. 7. Garnish with two of the pickled onions.
Tommy Cummins is the bar manager of Discount Suit Company in London, UK. This independent cocktail bar is situated moments from Spitalfields Market and focuses on great cocktails made with traditional methods and forgotten classic recipes. All of this soundtracked by a big love for all things Soul - especially Northern. “A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail. We infused the onions with the juniper berries and sea kelp to drive home the maritime idyll and to represent both the gin ( juniper berries), and the island (kelp). Also, Isle Of Harris Gin stands with its head held high against the pickling liquor. It’s great to try something different in the gin world and Isle of Harris are doing that. While everyone is doing heavy juniper London Dry styles, they are keeping to their heritage of the island. This is shown in that lovely maritime smell, with hints of pine needles and dried oranges. Looking forward to seeing what you release next."

Coarse Grasses in the Lawn 1 am prompted to mention this now as this spring saw an emergence of coarse grasses in many lawns, more so than usual. What are coarse grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, coarse looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other coarse grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings.
major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing, because April and May saw fairly dry and cold conditions. Coarse grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate, even if only for a short spell until the main grass gets going. You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed.
They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller won’t clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a
There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coarsegrasses, it should take you straight there.

Adult Fiction
The House by the Loch Junior Fiction
By Kirsty Wark
By David Walliams
Scotland, 1950s Walter MacMillan is bewitched by the clever, glamorous Jean Thompson and can't believe his luck when she agrees to marry him. Neither can she, for Walter represents a steady and loving man who can perhaps quiet the demons inside her. Yet their home on remote Loch Doon soon becomes a prison for Jean and neither a young family, nor Walter's care, can seem to save her. Many years later, Walter is with his adult children and adored grandchildren on the shores of Loch Doon where the family has been holidaying for two generations. But the shadows of the past stretch over them and will turn all their lives upside down on one fateful weekend.
The World’s Worst Teachers Think your teachers are bad? Wait till you meet this lot. These ten tales of the world's most splendidly sinister teachers will have you running for the school gates. Dr Dread teaches science and is half man, half monster... Watch out for the ghastly Miss Seethe. She is ALWAYS furious - and she's on a detention rampage. And as for Pent, he's a teacher with a real difference. He is bone-shakingly terrified of... children!

The Planets
Andrew Cohen with Professor Brian Cox A sweeping, stellar investigation to the worlds we share in our solar system. Drawing from the very latest research from an armada of probes exploring our planetary neighbours, The Planets sets out the dynamic history and present of our immediate universe.
By Onjali Q Rauf This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class). Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. There’s a lovely lack of stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator, which adds to the message of not judging people before you know them.

Community Based Nature Projects N A I R N R I V E R I N VA S I V E S P E C I E S P R O J E C T The banks, woodland and open spaces along the River Nairn are an integral part of our town, a natural asset that adds to locals’ quality of life. Riverside Park, near the Jubilee Bridge is a well-used but sometimes overlooked space that connects residential areas to the town centre. Green Hive and many other community groups want to see a flourishing riverside environment that provides a safe space to play and explore nature, for all ages. And now, users of Riverside Park are coming together to draw attention to this forgotten spot. Community groups such as Green Hive, Nairn PLAY and the
Forres and Nairn Welfare League are joining forces with Nairn’s Community Planning Partnership to develop their interest in enhancing the Riverside. The Nairn and Nairnshire Community Planning Partnership (NNCPP) brings the police, NHS, education, local council and voluntary groups together to enhance and develop our community ’s health and wellbeing. The NNCPP’s Places and Spaces subgroup is currently focused on Riverside Park, and will later turn to Tradespark. “We seek to make our open spaces accessible and useable, and are bringing groups
together to develop this space for the good of the community.” Cllr Tom Heggie, Place and Spaces Group Chair. As custodians of the Riverside football pitch and changing rooms, Forres and Nairn Welfare League portion part of their income to maintaining these important facilities. In the future they plan to extend the changing room area at either side, giving room to store equipment that will facilitate maintenance of the football park. “We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year and we are committed to the area long term. In the past, we have teamed up with other local sports clubs to provide support for the pitch and we very much welcome other partnerships to further that and any redevelopment of the surrounding area.” John Rowley, FNWFA Executive Committee Member Nairn PLAY is a constituted community group which aims to improve play facilities at the riverside in Nairn. “It has been very helpful getting the help and support from Green Hive, Keeping
Nairnshire Colourful, the Welfare League and skatepark users. I'm delighted that Nairn PLAY was invited to work as a member of Places and Spaces.” Kat Woods, Nairn PLAY vice chair Young people that use the skate park are also joining efforts to improve the area. "I think it's a great idea for skaters and members of the Nairn community to come together and express the interests we have in the riverside area … the many of us who use the skatepark for its intended purposes feel that it is overlooked. So this would be a great opportunity to show that there is a community based around the skatepark … and convince organisations, groups and the public that Nairn

skatepark and the surrounding area is somewhere for improvement.” Dayne Inglis Green Hive’s Nairn River Invasive Species Project is working to reduce species such as Giant Hogweed from our riverbanks, creating a more biodiverse and healthy riverside. As part of this project we are planning a Family Day at Riverside Park, inviting members of the public to help clear Himalayan Balsam plants from the woodland area along the riverside. The other Places and Spaces members are keen to join in, making this a collective family event. The event, on Saturday 20th July from 12pm, will be a day of family activities for our community to enjoy our riverside environment. Green
Hive will have opportunities to learn about and remove invasive species, while our Countryside Ranger, the Welfare Football League, the SISI project, Fire Scotland and others will lead nature trails, sports, bushcraft and other activities. Attendees will be encouraged to give thoughts and hopes for the park’s development, so come along and share your ideas. “This will be an open-ended process and other groups that regularly use this park are invited to make themselves known” Cllr Tom Heggie. Stylist In Training... ‘Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.’ wikipedia. I never thought I would EVER wear trainers unless inside a gym (and that dear readers can be somewhat a rare occasion) . If I couldn’t wear heels then flat ballet pumps all the way - they didn’t feel very exciting but at least I could walk. Then one day I discovered sneakers, and suddenly sportswear took on a new meaning. I have since been on a quest to see how many ways I can incorporate these comfy little gems into my wardrobe. Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way they make me feel I can walk that extra mile. ‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and
evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a very important audition but because my hair was done, the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style - to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with an easy confidence.
My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style... 1. Pick a pair that suit your feet. 2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates 3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh (or wear trainer socks)
4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe, or are neutral enough to tone in. 5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts, suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...
The most important rule is to stay true to who you are and have FUN!
