Getting married is one of the highlights of our short life on this earth. I wonder how many millions of tons of confetti have been spread around churches and other buildings over the centuries. I’m sure there will be mixed views over the environmental impact but, hey ho, it all seems like good fun to me. Hope you enjoy our short feature on weddings this month!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Have I Got News For You?
We are bombarded by news from our papers, TVs and the internet. Stories of abuse, pain, mass murder, financial meltdown and various other bad news barrage us. We live in a broken and sinful world.
A local newspaper in the UK run a section in their paper entitled “Good News”. They say that this section is “A spotlight on what's inspiring, what's positive and what's working. This Paper covers the stories that most media chooses not to.”
Within our world there are stories of good news. Stories where rays of light break into the darkness of our world. The Bible talks about good news. This news is the greatest news our broken world needs to hear. If you believe it, it is the best news ever. That good news is the gospel.
Christians like that word. It is also a word used in our culture to mean something that is absolutely real and true. However, in the Bible it is used to mean good news. Preaching the gospel is preaching good news. Gospel truth is good news truth. Believing the gospel is believing good news. The apostle Paul wrote in the Bible that the good news is what he preached and what is most important. Good news is what saves us. So, what is this good news?
Good news has to make a difference in our lives. Otherwise, it is just interesting news.
Paul explains that the good news is that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and was raised on the third day. Jesus died to pay for my sins, my offences against God. All the things I did that I should not have done. All the things I should have done and did not. The

things that keep me from a Holy God have been paid for by God’s own son. Not only that, but He came back to life. Jesus, God’s son, paid for my sins by His death on the cross and God brought Him to life again. That is good news. That is great news. That is why, at the birth of Jesus, the angels announced: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you: he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:1011). Jesus himself said: “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). Choose life. Choose Jesus.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS
EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 11TH DECEMBER 2012 OF ELGIN COMMUNITY COUNCIL
4. POLICE UPDATE Crime figures are within projected baseline forecast both for the year and for the past fortnight Operation Star is ongoing. It consists of high visibility foot patrol runs in the High Street of Elgin leading up to Christmas. Operation Avon is also ongoing to tackle Street alcohol. Rangers versus Elgin football game is rescheduled for 22nd December 2012 and as previously, the police have assessed the risks do not expect any trouble and 60 –70 officers will be present. Gordon Methven asked what information was available on the new single Scottish Police Force. 32 authorities will be reduced to 14 and in Elgin, Superintendant Cooper and Chief Inspector Findlay will remain. John Divers said that the Council’s pathfinder group are aware of this.
6a. PLANNING Brownmuir Windfarm: James Wiseman’s proposed reply to the letter from RPS was approved. The essence of the letter was to reinforce the Community opinion which can’t necessarily be easily argued away. Alastair Kennedy and James Wiseman attended a presentation about the Community Benefit processes which discussed the area to benefit and a possible mechanism for distribution. James Wiseman pointed out that whilst this may seem at odds with the objection, in order to do the best for our community it is necessary to be aware of the workings of Community Benefit opportunities in case the development should be approved against our objection. Alastair Kennedy explained that this was a sensible activity because the community benefit is likely to be substantial and one source suggests a minimum of £5,000 per installed megawatt which would be £285,000. John Divers expressed concern that the Moray Council had not been involved in those discussions. James Wiseman explained that the developers had expressed an interest in match funding to increase the benefit therefore it may make sense for the Council not to be involved because the wind farm could become an additional match funding source for the Council.
page 8 - February 2013
The Main Issues Report will be out for public consultation on 23rd November 2012 and will be discussed at a Community Leaders meeting hosted by the Joint Community Councils of Moray (JCC) to be held in the Laich Moray Hotel on 12th December 2012 at 7pm to 9:30pm. 2 King Street is still ongoing.
6d. ROADS & TRANSPORTATION Taxis: George Littlejohn said that he is to move this on in the new year with a meeting offered by Ian Emslie of the Taxi Driver’s Association ahead of next years consultation by Moray Council. Gordon Methven advised that there is a Scottish Government Consultation out on the subject – See Consultations. Dr Gray’s Roundabout: The risk posed to Elgin Academy pupils had been advised to George Littlejohn via Harry Torry and the idea of a pelican crossing or crossing patrol had been suggested. Gordon Methven recounted his experience with Road Safety Policing in the 1990’s that if a location is perceived as dangerous it actually makes it safer. Gordon Methven also advised that School Crossing Patrols were in the past solely reserved for primary school children. (It would be unusual for the Council to agree to a patrol on the A96 as it would set a precedent and perhaps a clamor for them to be introduced at all our secondary schools). The Night Service from Dr Gray’s Hospital: ongoing. Western Link Road: ongoing and minutes of the most recent Community Engagement meeting were received.
7a. ELGIN NORTH AREA FORUM Cllr Gowans intimated that she had been interviewed by Audit Scotland and it went well and she was able to highlight some local work including SPICE and taxis. Budget Consultation was discussed. Academy footpath issue has been resolved and it will now be built in accordance with the Disability Act including lighting. Other issues around the completion of Elgin Academy were discussed.
7b. ELGIN SOUTH AREA FORUM
November 2012 after the AGM where the office bearers remained the same. Western Link Road & Sandy Road, Budget Workshop, Community Leaders workshop 12th December 2012, SPICE, Taxis and Hardhillock extraction.
7c. STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE CITY OF ELGIN (SPICE) Jacqui Taylor has left BID but remains on SPICE. The Environment Improvement Strategy was well received by a meeting with Zero Waste Scotland on 7th December 2012. Street Pastors: A meeting was held with the Elgin Street Pastors.
9. DEANSHAUGH PLAYING FIELDS Work is ongoing at Deanshaugh Playing Fields.
11. GRANT LODGE Alastair Kennedy reported that following a comment to the Chair of the group about a piece of wrong information in their newsletter it was acknowledged at the recent AGM that the Community Council had initiated the current process of regeneration The future use of Grant Lodge is as yet undecided but is expected to for part of the Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere project.
12. PROMOTING THE CITY OF ELGIN Community Fair Debrief is ongoing and being organised by Gordon Methven. www.celebratemaidstone.org.uk was put forward by Steven Christie and Gordon Methven as a good example of promoting a city.
13. ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL The Project is Ongoing: John Divers explained that various representatives have been to see best practice in other schools and a letter was circulated advising the local community to keep a watch on proposals as they develop.
Steven Christie outlined the topics discussed at the South Forum on 20th

Well, one of the big stories of recent months has obviously been the Forres Mechanics award for the best footy scotch pie. No great surprise really when it is supplied by Murdoch Brothers - already winners of a variety of top scotch pie awards.
”
As a bit of film buff, I took some time out recently to see the fantastic screen adaptation of Tolkien’s epic The Hobbit. It is a book I loved to read and the filming is breathtaking in its scale.
While it may not be good for the waistline, I can certainly testify that Forres Mechanics/Murdoch Brothers pies are good for the soul. I should, of course, point out that there are other butchers and bakers in Moray who also make really excellent pies and I am on a mission to check them out as well. However, in the meantime, well done to Mechanics for keeping their loyal supporters well fed with some high quality Moray produce!
It was great to see Scottish actors in the cast as well, which is hugely encouraging for those involved in the arts. Following on from Skyfall and the scenes shot in Scotland for the Harry Potter movies, the cinema is proving to be a great shop window for our country and for our many talented folk.

Dreaming of... ...Bermuda
Bermuda is located 1,000 miles north of the Caribbean and just 2 hours flying time from the East Coast of America which makes it a perfect destination for a stop-over en-route to New York or Boston. It is just 8 hours from Gatwick and British Airways offer connections from Inverness.
Port Royal Golf Course
The island’s culture is a rich fusion of British colonial history and African heritage. Bermudans are well known for their sincere friendliness and warmth. The island is famous for its Bermuda shorts that were fashioned on the British Military uniform for hot climates in the 20th century, and the Royal Navy still have them as part of their uniform today. This is taken very seriously with rules stating that Bermuda shorts should not be worn shorter than 6 inches above the knee. Bermuda’s capital, the city of Hamilton, is packed with historic buildings, churches, shops, museums, galleries, parks and gardens. All of this set alongside a beautiful harbour. During the summer months Front Street in Hamilton City is closed to traffic one night a week for Harbour Nights. This is where the cruise ships dock and the harbour is transformed into a bustling festival of arts, crafts and food stalls, late night shopping and colourful live performances! Bermuda is an all-year-round destination. The spring, summer and autumn months are the best time of year to make the most of spotless pink beaches such as the popular Elbow Beach and the exciting diving opportunities on offer. There are over 200 species of hard coral and wreck dives are very popular too with Bermuda boasting over 400 dive sites. It is also famous for its 7 golf courses! This is more golf courses than any other small island in the world. The winter months are the perfect time of year for golfing. In 2013 the PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be played at the prestigious Port Royal Golf Course between the 16th and 18th of October.

Caring about... Before Renovation
...complete Lawn Renovation. A project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone… wouldn’t know where to start… best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive however whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a before and after picture taken just a few weeks apart last summer. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come). 1. Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development. 2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper. 3. Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is however open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting. 4. Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and therefore environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.

Humanist Weddings It’s not surprising that we’re the fastest growing provider of weddings in Scotland – because people who go to Humanist Ceremonies like them so much! A Humanist Wedding celebrates the people involved – the couple, their family and friends. Ask us about symbolic gestures (like wedding band warming, handfasting and candlelighting), how you can involve your family and friends in the ceremony, and choices of wording for your vows. You can be as traditional or unusual in your choices as you like. We work hard to tailor the ceremony to fit you – making it a unique, personal celebration of your love and future together. That’s why Kirsteen said to her Celebrant: ‘Thank you with all our hearts – our wedding ceremony was utterly joyous and unforgettable. It was better than we dreamt possible, and we felt you understood us and the words we wanted to say.’ Find out more from highlandweddings@humanism-scotland.org.uk
