I’m feeling a bit grumpy lately. I wonder if I can lay the blame at the door of BREXIT. Am I the only one who would just wish we could get it done and move on? It seems an age since we voted and true to form it looks like the politicians and “experts can’t even agree on what we voted for. I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised. How often do politicians use one word when twenty will suffice!? Even though I voted remain I accepted the final decision and along with many people, I guess, would just like us to get on with it. Let us hope for common sense to prevail over party politics!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings June is a time to explore the many woodland walks around the Moray area. I am amazed at the beauty of nature and especially the many trees lining a walk or, if you drive into Elgin on the A96, the woodland that almost forms a canopy over the road. It is interesting to note that the example of trees is often used in the Bible, either as a metaphor or as a parable and even just telling us about the splendour of creation. One resource I used, quoted that there are at least 55 verses in the Bible referring to trees. From where God created trees as food for mankind (Genesis 1:12); we also read of the Tree of Knowledge that led to mankind being tempted (by evil and its own pride) into rejecting God’s knowledge for our own (Genesis 2:9 and Genesis 3:2). In Psalm 1:3 we read that the faithful should be like a tree planted next to a stream, bearing fruit and placing its roots in the life giving water. We read of Jonah, who lamented the loss of the vine that was provided for him as shelter (Jonah 4: 6 – 7) and of Jesus using the fig tree in His parables (for example in Luke 13: 6 - 9). It was also the product of a tree,
stripped from its roots and branches that brought us salvation in Christ through His sacrifice on the Cross. In John’s Book of Revelation, Jesus is described as the Tree of Life for all (Rev 22:14) and we are invited to have a right to this Tree of Life How does this reflect on my life as somebody who follows Jesus? Perhaps Psalm 1 can help us if we use the tree as a metaphor for our life. We read in Psalm 1:3: “He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers”. Firstly, a tree has branches, giving protection and shade on those warm summer days. We can cool off underneath it and find comfort and renewed energy. Trees are also strong and if you have a tall tree with strong branches, you would even be able to hide or find shelter in those branches. Trees are also the carrier of knowledge. When a tree is cut, you can read from the rings when there were droughts or floods, when the times were good or bad. Yet, the tree endures it all to provide place of rest and rejuvenation

for anybody who finds shelter under its branches and leaves. Perhaps this metaphor helps us to understand how we should live life. We should be like a tree which is planted next to a stream that gives life. Jesus said in John’s Gospel (John 7: 37) “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”. When we are connected to the living water, the fruit that I bear as follower of Christ, renews me to be like the tree in our metaphor. To be somebody who is welcoming, caring, loving and provide comfort. Not because I can gain anything from it, but because it’s the oxygen I share with others as somebody who is connected to the source of the Living Water. May the summer help us to re-energise and renew our lives to be trees that provide comfort and protection to those around us.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The erosion of local services is something that concerns us all. From the loss of a bus service or NHS treatment being moved from local hospitals to being delivered at a regional level, our communities are the poorer for it and particularly in a large, rural area like Moray. I’ve been contacted by many people voicing concerns about the loss of local banks. Customers are faced with having to travel some distance just for a cash machine when branches close. Local banks offer human contact and for a business, having a branch open where staff can deal with them effectively and efficiently can make a significant difference to how they operate. I have made representations to the RBS and will continue to raise the issue about frequency of the mobile service which is also causing concern. Although the RBS has decided against reducing the Dufftown mobile service there are parts of Moray, such as Fochabers, where they have no service at all or Lossiemouth where the mobile service is down to once a week. This isn’t good enough and it’s right that we all make our feelings about this known in an effort to get the banking services we need in our local communities.
We should rejoice at our growing and ageing population. I am sure I’m not alone in wishing to benefit from a long and healthy life. The medical advances which have ensured that former life changing conditions are dealt with as a matter of routine are continually being enhanced. The Highlands now has a growing population. Many of our young folk no longer leave the area for higher education whilst the new jobs mean an increased tax base to fund services. It’s vital our older folk are supported to live in their own homes for as long as they safely can be. How we respond to their growing needs will ultimately mark out the sort of caring society we really are.
As I went to start writing this Spotlight blog, an email from the Trussell Trust Foodbank Network appeared in my inbox. They were sharing a report with MSPs on the impact of the UK Government’s welfare changes on the number of people who are relying on local foodbanks for support. In Moray, between April 2017 and March 2018, our local foodbank gave out over 2800 emergency food parcels with over 800 of those going to children. Locally, we have people both in and out of work, who’re struggling to make ends meet, and recent figures suggest that one in five children in Moray are living in poverty. Those numbers are shocking. None of that is acceptable and we all have a duty to work together to tackle poverty in our communities. The Poverty Conference earlier this year was a good start in raising awareness of the challenges on our doorstep. The next step must be putting in place a strategy outlining what we need to change to reduce the number of people living in poverty locally.

Reader, our hearts are desperately wicked, we are all sinners by nature and by practice, separated from God, and we will not escape the damnation of Hell without the Saviour which is Christ the Lord. All have sinned and all fall short of God’s righteousness and we cannot save ourselves. Jesus Christ died on Calvary’s Cross for your sin and rose again from the dead three days later by the mighty power of God, and He is the Christian’s Righteousness. Are you righteous before God? Have you received Jesus Christ as your Saviour? Are you a Christian?

MAKING LIFESTYLE CHOICES IS ONE THING BUT MAKING CHOICES THAT CAN IMPROVE YOUR LIFE IS QUITE ANOTHER. At Care À La Carte, we believe our clients should be the architects of their own care plans, which simply means you can shape the care relationship you want with the way you want to live. All our care staff are exceptional, carefully screened and specially selected not only for their professional skills but also for their human generosity. We strongly believe it’s these characteristics which create personal chemistry, as well as regard and respect which make for a great working relationship. THERE’S NO UPPER LEVEL OF SERVICE, So you might just need someone to pop round for a cup of tea and provide some welcome company from time to time or, provide the support you need to get out of your home, for a day trip, or even a holiday? On the other hand, you might want to receive a more personalised medical relationship, to help you deal with the challenges that life has presented you. In this regard, we would work with you and your medical advisors to agree the ideal plan to help you make the very best of your situation. You will be the one driving your own care agenda. Carers Week 2018 Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. This year, Carers Week is 11-17 June, and is promoting opportunities to keep carers healthy and connected. The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is. Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) is joining other members of the Moray Carer Service Provider Network (CSPN) to equip our communities to support the health and wellbeing of carers. Around 8000 people in Moray are carers, looking after a parent, partner, child or friend. A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older. Caring can be a hugely rewarding experience but VRPHWLPHV FDUHUV ÄłQG LW FKDOOHQJLQJ to take care of their own wellbeing while caring. CSPN is providing information SRLQWV IRU VWDII LQ ÄłYH *3 VXUJHULHV across Moray, raising awareness of carers' issues and promoting support services available. \zCSPN members will be on hand to answer questions DQG HQFRXUDJH *3 VWDII WR UHIHU FDUHUV to services as soon as possible.
Healthpoint in Elgin is offering a programme of short health walks, incorporating the opportunity for carers to speak to a member of the Healthpoint team for information on health and wellbeing. Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) is offering carers the opportunity to experience a range of complementary therapies, working in partnership with local therapists who have reserved a number of appointment slots for carers during the week. Taking time out from caring responsibilities on a regular basis helps carers continue to provide the care they do – without those breaks, carers can become overwhelmed and their own health breaks down. We’re very grateful to the therapists who have committed to work with us during Carers Week. See our June newsletter for details of the therapies available, and book \RXU SODFH TXLFNO\ â ijUVW FRPH ijUVW served - although all therapists are happy to take bookings for other slots at any time. We’ll also be providing information points at two supermarkets in Moray, where members of the SXEOLF ZLOO EH DEOH WR ijQG RXW PRUH about carers and carer issues, and about our services and support. If you or someone you know is providing unpaid care to a family member or friend, Quarriers are here to help. Contact us today, and let this Carers Week be the one that helps you stay healthy and connected. We look forward to meeting you.

Greeks Bearing Gifts
Adult Fiction Circe By Madeline Miller
By Philip Kerr 1957, Munich. Bernie Gunther's latest move in a long string of varied careers sees him working for an insurance company. Sent to Athens to investigate a claim from a fellow German for a ship that has sunk, Bernie takes an instant dislike to the claimant. Then the claimant is found dead, shot through both eyes. It's a win for Bernie's employers at least: no one to pay out to even if the claim is genuine. But who is behind the murder, and why?
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is scorned and rejected by her kin. Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft. Circe's independence draws the wrath of men and gods alike and she must decide whether she belongs with the deities she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

Adult Non-Fiction The Templars By Dan Jones The Knights Templar were the wealthiest, most powerful - and most secretive - of the military orders that flourished in the crusading era. Their story - a network of international finance, a swift rise in wealth and influence followed by a bloody and humiliating fall - has left a comet's tail of mystery that continues to fascinate and inspire historians, novelists and conspiracy theorists.

The Midnight Gang
By Louise O’Neill
By David Walliams
Hans Christian Andersen's original fairy tale is reimagined through a searing feminist lens. Deep beneath the sea, off the cold Irish coast, Gaia is a young mermaid who dreams of freedom from her controlling father. On her first swim to the surface, she is drawn towards a human boy. She longs to join his carefree world, but how much will she have to sacrifice?
Welcome to the Midnight Gang! Midnight is the time when all children are fast asleep, except of course for...the Midnight Gang. That is when their adventures are just beginning... Heartwarming and, of course, funny story of five children on a hospital ward - and on a quest for adventure! It is a story of friendship and magic - and of making dreams come true.

Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning)! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.
If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year. I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season.
You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society).

une is the month when things really start motoring in the garden. With overnight temperatures that bit higher, plus a bit of sun and rain, the plants are really are in their element. If you find that you have lost plants over the winter, do not be disheartened, it has happened to all of us – it was a tough winter! Don’t be in too much of a rush to pull things out of the ground though, there is still hope for more established shrubs that have not managed to get through the winter. For plants such as Hebe spp, many of which are only borderline happy in our climate, try hard pruning those that look to have died. When I say hard pruning, I mean cut them back down to the ground! While doing this, you may even notice that the plant is regenerating from its rootstock, with little buds bursting forth. If after a few more weeks you notice nothing, then you may have to concede that the plant has died, but you’ll be amazed at how often the plants come back! For those of you who battle with a mossy or weedy lawn, there are some useful things you can be doing at the moment. Early spring is a good time for scarifying grass, basically raking some of the moss out. With the late start to

the season this year, you still have time to do this. For small areas you can do this with a wire rake, and for larger areas you will be better off hiring a machine. With the grass growing properly now, I also put down a lawn feed. A little trick here though – conventional spring or summer feeds contain large amounts of nitrogen and simply make your grass grow extremely quickly. I use an autumn feed, which has all the same nutrients, but less nitrogen. The result is nice healthy grass that is not growing at a rate of knots! I have also put a load of well-rotted horse manure down on my flowerbeds. You can also use well-rotted cow or chicken manure. You can judge whether your manure is well-rotted enough quite easily – it should not smell bad! Now anything like this is full of nitrogen, so will make your plants take off (just as lawn fertiliser does to the ‘leaves’ of grass plants). Now is the time to do this, however, as if you put down nitrogen-rich feeds on your plants later in the summer, you may end up simply creating lush foliage growth that then gets hammered by the next early frosts. But let’s not start talking about frosts yet! With a bit of luck we’ll get some nice weather this summer, and we can all reap the benefits of our hard work gardening by spending some quality time relaxing in the garden. Let’s not miss an opportunity to get the barbecue out!
Till next time, happy mountain gardening!
