The Editor

The 2014 Commonwealth Games baton left Buckingham Palace a few weeks ago and has now started a worldwide trek around many of the Commonwealth nations ending up in Glasgow next June. I was surprised recently to learn that there are currently 53 independent sovereign states that are members of the Commonwealth with a further 7 waiting for acceptance. Quite a structure!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Recently I was overseas – although it was a fairly small sea. Travelling by public transport (ferry in this case) there is always the opportunity to look around at fellow travellers. And as I do, I find myself wondering – what kind of people are they? There’s a family with a little girl who runs about the place full of energy, her mother anxiously watching in case her daughter disturbs anyone – as far as I can see most of us find the little one entertaining not annoying. There’s a guy looking at his neighbours as if they crawled out from under a stone. Is he grudging them every bite of their fish suppers or is he irritated they sat so close? Now that couple over there - is it mother and son? She certainly looks a lot older than him. The guy next to me has piercing blue eyes – and his friend has got one of those lived in faces – he could be anything from 35 to 50 years of age. But then the thought occurs - if I am looking at them are they looking at me? They may not be paying me any attention whatsoever; they may be wrapped up in their own little world (as in a sense I am!) or contemplating the glorious creation all around us.

But if they are – looking at me that is – what are they thinking? What do they see? Are they making up stories about me, as I am about them? Are they longing for a conversation or would they run a mile if I so much as opened my mouth? What do people see in us? If I remember correctly the Bard said something about needing grace to see ourselves as others see us. That’s true, for often I see myself in far too negative a light; yet at other times the opposite – imagining myself almost faultless and the problems are all with everyone else. Perhaps when Burns penned those words he was recalling what Paul wrote in his letter to people in the church in Rome – don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment (Romans 12 : 3). Now as I say, I find that difficult – but the good news is, help is at hand. God is ready to supply us with the grace needed so we can see ourselves, not simply as others see us but, even more importantly, as God sees us. The Bible tells us God is aware of our thoughts, our imaginations, everything about us.

writer of Psalm139, David, acknowledged this when he said, before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD (verse 4). Yet far from being annoyed at this seeming intrusion into his thoughts, David is thankful for God’s presence - if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast(verses 9 & 10). Fellow travellers, as I look at you and you look at me what do we see? Hopefully, people who have invited God to travel with them; the God who has shown he is prepared to go with us in order to help us think, say and do what is good, pleasing and perfect.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

Parliament Blog

Everywhere I go in Moray people are asking about the Independence Referendum set to take place next year. Whether it is in the pub, in the supermarket or just walking down the street it is the subject many, many people want to ask me about. It is great to see people excited about the debate and asking questions about a decision that will for most be one of the biggest they make in their lifetime. I was out in Elgin’s newest pub, the Drouthy Cobbler, recently and, again, it was the subject that came up in almost every discussion. It is great to see people so engaged about the issue and really thinking about what they want for the future.

October saw the 100th anniversary of the National Farmers Union and I was absolutely delighted to join NFU members in Norah to celebrate what is a long and proud history of an important rural organisation. I regularly meet NFU representatives and members as I travel around Moray. it is great to join in the celebrations of this significant birthday and wish them continued success for many more years! Caring about...

A Dry Summer this Year - at Last and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month has been about aerating the lawn now. At GreenThumb, this is what we’re doing too. Compacted ground prevents the take up of moisture, prevents air circulation and congests the root zone in the turf. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of moss and lichen over the Winter. For small lawns traditionally this has meant forking the ground, but for a larger lawn this is not really feasible. What we do, and the golf courses do this too, is run over the grass with a hollow-core tining machine (you can see from the picture this is a heavy piece of kit). It pulls thousands of cores out the ground in no time, and instantly eases the compaction. It’s probably the best thing we can do for our customers, as no-one has an aerator in their shed ! However you tackle this, it is a key part of the battle in our climate to control moss. Oh - and remember to keep leaves off the grass through the autumn. For more information about a personalised lawn improvement plan for your lawn, from just £5 per month on monthly DD, plus useful downloads and photos, look us up at www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is the UK’s No.1 national lawncare franchise with over 200 branches, and treats half a million lawns, we are your local branch and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at: inverness@greenthumb.co.uk

WINTER

Now is the time to have your lawns expertly prepared for Winter and the new growing season. Hollow Tine Aeration and Scarifying are best done at this time of year - From Autumn onwards. Hollow Tine Aeration Removes cores to de-compact the soil (after possibly heavy traffic through Summer!!) Tining allows water, nutrients and oxygen to reach the root zone of the grass plant more easily. Deep Scarifying Will thin out and remove much of the thatch and moss which has built up over the season giving room for new shoots to grow and spread in the Spring. We clean up and remove all the waste after scarifying or hollow tining your lawn Autumn Treatment Programme Our renowned Autumn/Winter treatment formula slowly releases nutrients through the winter, feeding and strengthening roots, maintaining the lawn's deep green presentation with our moss controller, if required. Dreaming of... Golden Triangle of

India India’s Golden Triangle is a well travelled route which includes Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. It is called the Golden Triangle due to the triangular shape formed by the locations of New Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan on the map, but is occasionally expanded to include the wider geographical area of North India. A variety of airlines fly direct from London Heathrow to Delhi, including Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Jet Airways and Air India. Regional connections can be added for an additional cost. New Delhi blends into a rich historic past with a vibrant present. Places to visit include India Gate, the War Memorial, Parliament House, Mahatma Ghandi Memorial and Museum, and also the Red Fort built by Emperor Shah Jehan over two centuries from 1193AD. A five hour drive or one hour flight from Delhi will take you to Jaipur. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the ruler of Amber, Jaipur is also referred to as the Pink City owing to the colour of buildings in its wonderful old city. The city was painted pink to honour the visit of Prince Albert in 1882. Situated 11km north of Jaipur, surrounded by the Aravalli Hills, is the Amber City Fort, where an elephant ride is provided to go up to the fort. Take a city tour to the City Palace, Jantar Mantar – The Royal Observatory and Hawa Mahal – Palace of Winds, with 1043 windows, built for the royal ladies to watch the activities on the street below without being observed themselves. En-route from Jaipur to Agra lies the beautiful deserted medieval city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built by Akbar the Great in the 16th century, today it is perfectly preserved as a ghost city built in the height of the empire’s splendour. Agra is a medieval city on the banks of the Yamuna River. Agra achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal era buildings. Most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri; all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Whether you choose a luxurious stay in one of the stunning palaces, or to explore the history and cultures, or even go in search of Indian Wildlife, relax on the fabulous beaches. India has it all.

Dunlop’s Motor Factors - a local business with national clout

Dunlops Motor Factorʼs and Autostore (owned and run by Andy Dunlop himself) is one of the best known one-stop car shops in Moray. Dunlopʼs is a family run business that puts the customer first. Established in Forres some 12 years ago it is constantly investing in expanding its ranges of stock by establishing trade contacts throughout the UK. This enables them to offer an unrivalled combination of choice and quality at prices that are hard to beat.

The last 18 months or so have been a particular trial for Andy and his team. Improvements to the A96 West of Forres and ongoing Flood Alleviation works have brought a pretty steady stream of large building and construction work traffic together with the associated noise and dust. But, through it all, Dunlops have continued to offer the value for money alternative to its customers and fortunately there now seems to be “light at the end of the tunnel” (although in this case itʼs a road!). All works are due to be completed in early 2015 although there are murmurings that the project may be ahead of schedule. Once finished Dunlops will have a significantly improved direct access to the A96 and be more convenient for all concerned. Till then the team soldier on!
