The Editor April marks a real change in the seasons for me and to celebrate this here are a few pithy quotes about this month: “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.” — Mark Twain “There are no days in the whole round year more delicious than those which often come to us in the latter half of April... The sun trembles in his own soft rays... The grass in the meadow seems all to have grown green since yesterday... though there is warmth enough for a sense of luxury, there is coolness enough for exertion.” — Thomas Wentworth Higginson

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS The Promises that Jesus Made St John 14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” Now that Easter is behind us, we can look forward to that wonderful holiday called Pentecost or Whitsun on 15th of May. That festival is sometimes called the Birthday of the Church or the Feast of the Holy Spirit. One of the promises Jesus made was that He would not leave us entirely on our own, but he would send us the gift of the Holy Spirit. Christians experience the Holy Spirit in unique and uplifting moments, often in answer to a prayer for help, often without even asking. That comforting guiding presence is there, alongside the struggling soul. The Holy Spirit is seen as a helper or enabler, a personal presence who seems to travel alongside us, helping us on the way. That is a promise of Jesus that has been recorded and fulfilled historically throughout the History of the Church, since Jesus’ Ascension into Heaven. Most Christians today will testify that they have experience of the Holy Spirit guiding their lives.

Jesus made several promises which are good news to some and a judgement to others. To the poor and pure of heart, there is a promise of good news. For those who have luxuriated in an economy that favours the rich, the haves over the have nots, well... Jesus’ promises are not good news. More a promise of judgement. Judgement under a new law, a law of love, that extends far beyond our civic laws. The promise of judgement is often enacted in the here and now, as well as beyond the grave. Those doubters who have rejected Jesus and His teachings in this life, do not have hope of a rosy future. So all you Christians need to get out there and share the faith with all your friends, relatives and neighbours... One promise made by Jesus which is harder for most people to even think about, is the gift of eternal life. How much of that is wishful thinking? Could it be real? The idea of some part of us being able to survive death and somehow continue to live on in the spiritual heavenly realm, just raises so much doubt in people. It seems to go against all the things that science and human measurement can explain. Nobody has produced a measuring instrument or computer that can detect life beyond the grave. Nobody has produced a cogent

argument to say that we can expect or even deserve any form of survival after our time of death. For most people, it is simple. The Doctor looks at his watch and writes down on the certificate, time of death. End of story. Perhaps that is why many people prefer not to believe, or at least, to engage with their faith. However, for all believers in Jesus, there is this promise to accept and live by. Even though we must all die, there will be a life beyond the grave. That is the promise Jesus made, a promise of eternal life. The early Disciples believed it and share this as... gospel truth. Why? Possibly because they had witnessed so many of the other promises of Jesus come into being. So there we have it. Whether we like it or not, Jesus has promised all His faithful followers... eternal life. He described it as being in a heavenly mansion, in the Heavenly realm where there is no restriction of room or numbers. The only person who can exclude you from this promise... is yourself. So stay close to Jesus.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES School Studies : It is approaching exam time again for our young folk in high schools across Moray. Several students have been in touch with me asking my views on a range of subjects that they are investigating - normally for Modern Studies assignments - covering subjects as diverse as the Westminster voting system and whether I support or oppose the death penalty. It is great to see the enthusiasm and I wish all of our students all the best in their upcoming exams. Something, I confess, I do not envy any one of them! Election Time : It wouldn’t be appropriate to use this column for political campaigning (and no-one would be surprised at who I’m campaigning for anyway!), however I would simply urge folk to use their vote in next month’s Scottish Parliament elections. Democracy has been paid for very dearly by those before us and I strongly believe we should all exercise our right to vote, whoever it may be for.

Here is an interesting question; would you like to make a financial donation to a giant energy company of your choice? Would you like to take ÂŁ300 for instance, out of your own pocket, and donate it to the company that supplies your household or business energy? I think your natural answer to both of these questions will be ‘no’ – but that’s what 70% of people in the Highlands and Islands are effectively already doing. My team and I took on the challenge to switch electricity providers only to find that between 5 of us the saving for switching was over ÂŁ1000. In this era of austerity, there is the opportunity to reduce costs instead of income so why don’t you give it a try? You can visit this website for impartial advice: www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/ or call them on 0808 2567151. You will save money and it could literally be hundreds of pounds.

GreenThumb

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Is your Lawn Now Ready for the Season ? By “Ready” I mean aerated, and raked or scarified. If so, well done. The ground conditions have been awful this year, right through the mid-winter months. The succession of storms, and heavy rain has meant lots of waterlogging. These conditions are not good for GreenThumb, or indeed anyone trying to get any work done. Very few plants thrive on standing for weeks on end with their feet in cold water ! We have made very slow progress for months now, and have a substantial backlog of preparatory work to catch-up. Easter weekend is early this year too. As a general rule, you should have the grass scarified and the winter moss dealt with before you start mowing or feeding. Once you get new young grass shoots up and running, a scarifier will no doubt do them some damage. We will probably have to postpone our spring feeding until all our aerating and scarification is done. This has been becoming more of a “norm” in the last 10 years as it seems to us on the ground every day, that autumn conditions are lasting late (up to Christmas), and winter is then running late and producing a late spring. Last year there was almost no spring at all ! Wet ground conditions going into this season means even worse moss than usual this spring. There’s not much time left therefore for raking and scarifying before the grass wants to get going. It also probably means we will all need to aerate the ground, to help with waterlogging, and the inevitable compaction of heavy ground. Spring – bring it on !

MORE FUN IN THE FOREST Forests in Moray and Aberdeenshire are really hard to beat, whether walking, cycling, watching wildlife or a picnic with the family, the forests have so much to offer. Visit the coastal woods along the Moray Firth, the wonderful and majestic Mountain of Bennachie with its surrounding forest, the peaceful pinewoods of Upper Deeside or the busy city woods round Aberdeen. Where else in the country can you get such variety! Whether you are a walker, mountain biker or horse rider, we have trails for you. Forestry Commission Scotland has invested £100,000 in developing and upgrading the Moray Monster Trails in the last 12 months and the skills loop is the final piece in this programme of works. Calum Murray CRT manager said "It's a fantastic resource for the area and will give mountain bikers of all ages a focal point for their sport”. The new skills base has something for everyone, from the more challenging routes where more experienced riders can take their skill level that few notches higher, to an area where beginners can practice basic techniques and skills. The skills area is ideal for family, school, or outdoor education groups because they can safely enjoy a mountain bike experience on trails and features that have a progressive approach to skills development and can be easily supervised.

Funded through the Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund, the facility has made the most of the natural landscape and has been fitted into the woodland with minimal tree loss. The facility includes a pump track - an area of small rolling bumps and banked corners (berms) in an area roughly the size of a tennis court – and three main downhills gauged to beginner, intermediate and expert ability levels. Between them the downhills contain 'rollable' bumps n jumps, different height drop-offs and three lines of jumps. The jumps will be aimed at the intermediate to expert level riders, with the options allowing riders to choose the line they are comfortable with. If you would like more information: Forestry Commission on 0300 067 6200 or email morayaberdeenshire@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

THE Pons Aelius

Mairearad & Anna (photo: Ricky Frew)

The Drouthy Cobbler is to make available limited numbers of bookable tables on Saturday evenings from the 9th of April.

Anna Massie (guitar, banjo, fiddle) will return on April 24th. Mairearad and Anna are a truly captivating duo, providing a highly energetic performance with an instantly warm and friendly stage presence.

Situated in the upstairs venue, the pop-up restaurant will offer diners a weekly changing table d'hote menu of the best seasonal and local foods. This move follows the great feedback received after similar dining events held for Mother's Day and Easter Sunday. The usual bar menu will continue to run in the downstairs bar.

Now based in Glasgow, they both grew up in the Scottish Highlands amidst very similar musical backgrounds and share an innate understanding of Scottish culture and music. As a duo they have enjoyed many successes, including five stars in The Scotsman and high praise from KT Tunstall, becoming a much-loved live act.

April also brings two great musical acts in their ongoing trad music season. At the start of the month (April 1st) the ambitious young instrumental sextet Pons Aelius arrive exploring the traditional and contemporary folk musics of Britain and beyond. With bold arrangements and an arsenal of instruments, the band melds age-old traditions with a fresh and innovative attitude. After forming in mid-2014, Pons Aelius wasted no time making a name for themselves on the live circuit including by winning a prestigious Danny Kyle award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival. Two of Scotland's most revered multi-instrumentalists, Mairearad Green (accordion and bagpipes) and

The “Discover New Music” strand of events will see Paris based Kate Stables visit The Drouthy Cobbler as “This is the Kit” (April 4th) after the release of her breakthrough third album with has received much critical acclaim. “A sublime blend of Appalachian bluegrass-infused pop with vocals, banjo, guitar and the odd bit of whistling” - Time Out Cambridge singer-songwriter Will Robert is touring the UK with his unique percussive guitar playing and will be in Elgin on April 15th. “Beautifully crafted lyrics and a fascinating array of guitar techniques, one of the undiscovered gems of the U.K. music scene” - Tom Simkins BBC Radio Cambridgeshire April 17th is George Cosby - a dark pop artist from South London whose influences range from The National to Eddie Vedder and Bon Iver. “an almost-certain ‘one to watch’ in 2016” Indie Shuffle.

Tickets for all events are available at www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk and at the bar.

Chef’s Confidential

Knockando was the first distillery I visited, I was shown around by the impressive Innes Shaw, who knows all there is to know about whisky production. Set amoungst some of the most spectacular Speyside scenery and very close to the River Spey. The recipe inspiration comes from the aromas and flavours I find from this whisky. Sultanas from the sherry casks, almonds for that nuttiness. Knockando 12 year old is a lovely malt and one of my favourites. It's a great single malt for ladies, a great balance of flavours and aromas, and smooth and easy to drink.

Orange, Sultana and Knockando Malt Whisky Cupcakes Makes 12 cupcakes 200g caster sugar 2 large eggs 100g vegetable oil 140ml sour cream 1 tsp vanilla paste Grated zest of an orange 230g plain flour

½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp ground cinnamon 150g sultanas 150g chopped almonds 2 tbsp Knockando 12 yr single malt whisky

Preheat the the oven to 140C (fan) 150C / 300F / gas mark 2. Line a muffin tin with paper cases. Soak the sultanas in the whisky for at least 3-4 hours but preferably overnight to allow them to become plump and absorb the whisky. In a bowl place the sugar and eggs. Beat with an electric whisk for 3-5 minutes until light and fluffy. Very gradually add the oil, beating all the time, then slowly add the sour cream and vanilla paste beating after each addition. Mix all the dry ingredients together and add to the egg and oil batter. Beat thoroughly, ensuring all is combined. Finally drain the sultanas and add them to the batter along with the chopped almonds. Keep the whisky as you will need it for the icing. Fill the cupcake cases 2/3 full with the batter and bake in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes until they are well risen and firm to touch. You can test them by placing a skewer in the centre and it should come out clean. Remove them from the oven and place on a cooling tray. Allow to cool completely. Caramel and Knockando Whisky Icing with Chocolate Chips 70g butter 6 tbsp milk 225g soft brown sugar 250g icing sugar Knockando Single Malt from the sultanas (approx 1 tsp) 1 tbsp chocolate chips Place the butter, milk and sugar in a pan and heat slowly bringing to the bowl. Boil for 1 minute and add half the icing sugar, beating with a whisk to remove any lumps. Leave to cool for a few minutes and add the rest of the icing sugar and whisky and beat to the right consistency. Decorate the cupcakes immediately and add the chocolate chips. © copyright Penny Ellis Grantown Road, Forres. Tel: 01309 673146 www.knockomie.co.uk

The Peppermill Café and Restaurant is located on the High Street in Forres and my boyfriend and I decided to head out that way for a change of scenery. When we arrived at the restaurant we were warmly welcomed and given the option of a table at the window. Menus and the Specials board were brought to the table as well as a jug of water – a nice touch. While we looked over the menu we were served complimentary canapes of Lavosh Biscuit with Salmon Mousse and they were just divine. For starters I had the Confit Duck Rillette with Melba Toast, Cranberry and Pickled Chili and Chris had the Haggis & Oatmeal Bonbons with Whisky Sauce and Salad – both were just bursting with flavors. For our main course I decided on the Breast Of Chicken accompanied by a Thyme Potato Cake, Crispy Prosciutto & Black Pudding and Chris went for the 8oz Fillet Steak. My meal was very juicy and flavoursome and Chris decided that this was not just one of the best fillet steaks but was THE best fillet steak he had ever tasted and it was cooked to perfection. It was hard to choose a dessert as they all looked rather tempting and we would gladly have had them all. Chris settled on the Chocolate Truffle Tarte and was not disappointed and I had a good old fashioned crumble, but it was a Peach Crumble with fresh cream and once again both desserts were absolutely delicious. The Peppermill Café and Restaurant has a fantastic menu and a number of different specials so plenty to choose from and something to suit all tastes. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the food is outstanding and cooked to a high standard. The owner, Sophie, is always on hand to make sure the customers are very happy. I would highly recommend the Peppermill Café and Restaurant and will most definitely be going back for a meal. I have already recommended it to friends and family. Recovery happens Arrows is the new drug and alcohol support service in Moray. Run by Quarriers, Arrows supports adults with problematic substance use, offering advice, information and treatment to support individuals in their recovery. Who is the Service for? Arrows is a service for anyone worried about alcohol and drug use, whether their own or a loved one’s. Substance use problems can develop over time, and it is important for individuals to recognise where drugs or alcohol are having an impact on their wellbeing, relationships or lifestyle. Support is available to anyone with concerns, no matter how small. At times it’s the friends, family or other people around an individual who may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved ones.

What support is available? Arrows offers a listening ear and provides advice and information for people facing addiction issues. Our one-to-one and peer group support helps to build motivation, set goals and manage addictions using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches and Motivational Interviewing.

How do I access support? You can drop into our Elgin office during opening hours. We are located near the end of the High Street, with both a High Street entrance and side door entrance on Kilmolymock Close. Alternatively, you can call, text or email and we can arrange to meet with you at a convenient time and location to discuss support options.

Will I be anonymous? You can contact the service anonymously to speak to someone, and disclose your name or information on your own terms. We will only keep or share information about you with your consent and your on-going support will be agreed in partnership with you. We do have a duty to share information where we have concerns that you or an individual are at risk of harm.

Will you involve my family or friends? We recognise the benefits of including family members and loved ones in accessing support and on-going recovery. We can discuss this with you should you wish to include a family member or friend, or you yourself wish to be included as a supportive factor in a loved one’s recovery.
