Strathnairn Firewood A&C Douglas-Jones
“...a friend of... sinners!” (Luke 7:34)
Reader, The Lord Jesus loves the sinner but hates the sin. The Saviour is willing and able to save, but the sinner must acknowledge their sin. It is through repentance toward God and faith in The Lord Jesus Christ that men and women are cleansed from their sins and justified in God’s sight. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, Christ died for the ungodly, there is none righteous, no, not one. Your sins, which are many, He alone can take away.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Bridges join things up. That’s their purpose and effect. But it’s funny how something designed to bring things together can divide people. The new Holm bridge over the River Ness joining Ness-side (where our church parish is) to Glenurquhart Road is no exception. When the plans for the Westlink came out, there were those who were for it, and those against. There were those who thought this was the best way of crossing the river, and those who thought another way would be better. But the bottom line is - the bridge has been provided to us, and it is joining two places together in a way that changes things permanently - if we choose to make use of it. I’m writing this piece days before Christmas, a time that we celebrated God giving us something. Reaching out over the great gulf between Himself and the human beings who had put clear water between He and them. And providing us with the gift of a bridge. That child grew up to become a man, talked Himself up as God, got hung up to die on a cross because of it, was raised up to life to prove He was right, and then ascended up to the Heaven He had come from. And what Jesus brought us through all of
that was a bridge. A way to join our life to God’s. For human beings to cross the great divide we’ve allowed to run between us and our Maker. For those living in this world to discover a place they’d never known. In John 14, Jesus explains that He’s become a bridge so that He could bring those who trust Him over to be home with God. Not just now, but forever. Not just forever, but now. In John 14:3-5, Jesus begins, ‘“You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.”’ For me, living in Slackbuie, now there’s more than one way to get the kids to the Leisure Centre on time for their activities. But here’s where my analogy breaks down (as they all do). Because here, Jesus said that He is the bridge to bring people to God. Here’s the divisive bit. Lots of people reject the bridge God’s provided in Jesus. They’d prefer another way to get to Him. They reason there must be another way. But the bottom line is, in Jesus, a bridge has been provided for us to the God we’d never be able to draw near otherwise.

This bridge changes things between us and God permanently - if we choose to make use of it. A week before Holm bridge was opened to the public, pupils from Holm Primary and Kinmylies Primary school met each other there. Before getting to the bridge for the symbolic moment of joining up, one of the P3s from Holm Primary asked ‘Do they speak a different language over there?’ I think she was joking, but I’m not sure of that… When it comes to approaching God and meeting Him on the bridge that He’s given us in Jesus, we can think the same way. ‘What if I don’t understand God? What if He doesn’t understand me?’ But just like that P3 I know whose curiosity about the bridge won out over her uncertainty about the ‘language barrier,’ I pray that you’ll have a curiosity about Jesus that will overcome any hesitancies about meeting a God on the other side of this bridge whose ways seem unfamiliar.

Ask the vet... This month we had an interesting and topical letter from Lisa who lives in Inverness with her pet collie “Ted”. He is a four year old rescue dog and a vet has advised he has quite a lot of tarter build up on his teeth. Dental disease is the most common problem suffered by adult dogs, with as much as 85% over the age of 3 having some form of dental disease. Many insurance companies now request routine dental hygiene checks before providing cover for dental procedures. Dental disease is preventable and tooth brushing is the gold standard in oral hygiene care. Other options such as special dental chews and solutions that can be added to drinking water are available but are not as good as brushing. Puppies that are used to having their heads and mouths handled are at an advantage with their dental hygiene. Gentle handling and a gradual introduction to tooth brushing it best. Don’t try to clean all the teeth at the first attempt! It is always best to make the experience as pleasurable as possible for the pet so they associate it with a positive reward such as a tasty treat. Remember Ted will have no idea what you are trying to do and may initially find the process frightening. It is a good idea to initially just gently touch and handle Ted’s mouth and muzzle area and stop then give him a treat or favourite toy to play with. After a couple of days doing this start to lift his lips to expose his teeth then a day or two later place a small amount of pet toothpaste (about the size of a pea) onto your finger and gently rub that along the outer

Culloden Veterinary Clinic surface of his teeth. Finger toothbrushes are available and are a great way to introduce the whole experience to Ted. Try to work up to being able to brush his teeth over a two week period and always stop when you see he is becoming uncomfortable or nervous. Some people find using a finger brush long term is fine and others find slowly introducing a ‘normal’ toothbrush easier. Other dental brushes are available and it may be a case of finding one that suits you both. Always use a pet toothpaste and not a human one. Ted will not rinse and spit! but will instead swallow the paste so it has to be safe and digestible for him. The toothpaste we use is made by Virbac and is called C.E.T. Enzymatic paste. It is designed to be tasty as it is poultry flavoured and the enzymes will start to break down the plaque upon contact. If you are a registered client please feel free to book an appointment with one of our nurses for a FREE dental check and brushing demonstration.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The modern world’s reliance on the internet has become so important that a fast broadband connection is now regarded as the fourth utility along with water, gas and electricity. All politicians will be judged on this issue and even more so now that the UK Government will ensure that homes and businesses have a legal right to high-speed broadband by 2020. That strengthens consumer rights and that is a step in the right direction. The Scottish Government have committed £600 million towards ensuring every home and business has secured superfast broadband by 2021. A bold ambition and one that I welcome. However, only time will tell if £600m is enough. By 2021 there will be no excuses and the Scottish Government must deliver.
The Scottish Government plans to enable all homes and businesses to have access to superfast broadband, at 30megabits per second, by 2021. The plan, supported by a budget of £600M, will divide Scotland into three regions for the purpose of getting competitive bids and thus best value. I know that those who lack superfast are frustrated, and so 2021 seems like a long way away. In the interim, those on very slow speeds of up to 2mbps can contact the Better Broadband Programme run by the Scottish Government. Rolling out R100 from 2019 we aim to complete the provision by end 2021 using a voucher scheme for those who cannot access through fibre. This is the most ambitious plan anywhere in the UK, and the largest investment. It will seek to make Scotland a world class digital nation essential for the world our children are inheriting.

Thanks to online shopping we are all increasingly aware of the benefits of shopping around when it comes to purchasing new household items, getting deals on broadband services and booking holidays. However people still remain reluctant to shop around to get better deals when it comes to their home energy. Whilst this is the case across the country, new figures published by Energy UK, show that consumers here in the Highlands are some of the least likely to switch providers. From my ongoing campaign to encourage people to take charge of spiralling energy costs, I have heard some fantastic first hand examples of just how much can be saved. One constituent told me she made a saving of £1,117 per year, whilst another saved £813. This shows just how worthwhile it can be to switch and I would encourage all Spotlight readers to look to see how much they can save.

Vegan Caramel Apple Walnut Cake This issue we see the return of the popular Vegan Caramel Apple Walnut Cake. You know the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, it is true that apples are healthy for us. Apples also make a tasty addition to baked goods like cakes, they’re simple, easy and always taste great. Recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres.
Ingredients: 6 tbsp brown sugar 4 cooking apples, peeled and sliced 3 cups plain flour 3 tsp ginger 225g vegan marg 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 tbsp golden syrup 1 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 1/3 cup soya milk 1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice 2 grated apples 1 cup walnuts
Method: 1. Sprinkle the sugar in the base of a large heavy-based frying pan suitable for the
oven, arrange apples on top of the sugar.
2. Sift the flour and ginger together then rub in the margarine and sugar. 3. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the soya milk. 4. Mix all the remaining ingredients with the flour mixture and the soy mixture and tip into the tin and bake in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for approximately 40-45mins or until a skewer comes out clean.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
Complete Lawn Renovation – a project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone ….. wouldn’t know where to start ….. best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive, however, whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a Before and After picture taken just a few weeks apart. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come).
1.
Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development.
2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper.
BEFORE
3.
Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is, however, open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting.
4.
Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and, therefore, environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.

national trust for scotland (highland members’ centre): talk by david barclay of the wildcat project 3pm, nairn community & arts centre
(1st John 4:14)
Reader, the Lord Jesus gave His life a ransom for all. Because of His work on the Cross of Calvary the “whosoever” can be saved (and that means YOU!) We all either accept and receive Him as our Saviour or we refuse the provision God has made for us in Christ. We alone are responsible. The Lord would have all men to be saved; those who come to Him, He never turns away. Come to Him now.

The Garden TOM ANGEL IS A GARDEN DESIGNER AND CHARTERED HORTICULTURIST BASED IN AVIEMORE. TOM PROVIDES GARDEN DESIGN AND HORTICULTURAL SERVICES AS
THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER, HAVING PREVIOUSLY RUN HIS OWN COMMERCIAL GARDENING BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.
TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. February can feel like the harshest of winter months, and we have certainly already received enough cold weather in January, but spring is around the corner now and there are a number of jobs that can be done now to help keep on top of the garden before the spring growth commences. One of the trickier jobs that can be managed now is pruning Wisteria, but you needn’t be too scared of this. Pruning involves cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. I’m going to elaborate on this in my blog, where I will give some more detailed instructions for this. Here are some other tasks that could or should be done in the garden in February:
DO prune summer-flowering Clematis before they start growing actively. DO renovate Beech hedges that need more robust pruning. DO plant bare root shrubs and trees. DO prune Winter Jasmine after it has flowered. DO take down any tired looking dead seed-heads that you have left over the winter. DO cut back deciduous grasses before fresh growth begins. DO prune/trim winter-flowering shrubs such as Mahonia japonica and Viburnum tinus after they have flowered. DO dead-head winter bedding as it can encourage some species to flower again. DO prune apple and pear trees.

DON’T forget to make sure all your machines are all serviced ahead of the spring. DON’T work heavy soils that are wet, wait till they have dried out. DON’T be tempted to start sowing lots of seeds in the greenhouse, they may well just become weak and spindly due to lack of light. DON’T forget to keep putting bird food out, and if possible keeping some water available for birds to drink from and bathe in. DON’T forget to use any slightly warmer days to start tackling moss build-up on hard surfaces. March is a busy month in the garden, with fair amounts of pruning to do, so get all and any tidying done that you can in February. I’ll be back next month, and in the meantime I’ll be getting on with all these jobs in my own garden!
