Scottishness seems to be the hot topic at the moment with numerous debates on independence. Whatever our views on this though is it not just as important to care for one’s neighbour as we would like to be cared for - irrespective of nationality? When we respect others as much as we respect ourselves then don’t we all win?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS
Moray Science Festival
Around 1930, the Communist leader Nicolai Ivanovich Bukharin journeyed from Moscow to Kiev. His mission was to address a huge assembly of people and his subject was atheism. For a solid hour he spoke vehemently and persuasively against Christianity, ridiculing the Christian faith. Finally his speech came to an end as he surveyed what he considered to be the smouldering ashes of men's faith. "Are there any questions?" Bukharin demanded. A solitary man arose and asked permission to speak. He mounted the platform and moved close to this feared Communist leader. The audience was breathlessly silent as the man surveyed them first to the right, then to the left. At last he shouted the ancient Orthodox greeting, "CHRIST IS RISEN!" The vast assembly arose as one man and the response came crashing like the sound of an avalanche, "HE IS RISEN INDEED!" There are many prominent intellectuals revered by today’s world who pour scorn and ridicule on the message of the Gospel, a message they believe science has discredited. Because of its moral stance on controversial issues of the day, the Christian Church is constantly under pressure to compromise its convictions about what constitutes truth and to conform to what is considered to be politically correct. Because of their faith in a God who created the universe and a Saviour who rose again from death to life on the third day, Christians finds themselves steadily pushed towards the margins of society and made to feel foolish and ignorant. In 1 Cor.1:18, Paul said in his own day “I know very well how foolish the message of the cross sounds to those who are on the road to destruction. But we who are being saved recognise this message as the very power of God.” As we celebrate Easter later this month, we are given a further opportunity to declare that amazing message that “CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED!” In the darkness of today’s world, with the appalling loss of human life in places like Syria where conflict tears apart families, towns and cities, and the nation, we can confidently share the resurrection message that there is life after life! In the darkness of personal tragedy and loss, we can find comfort and hope in the companionship of the One who died and rose again. “CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED!” On the Easter just before he died, Dr William Sangster painfully printed a short note to his daughter. A deeply spiritual Methodist, he had been spearheading a renewal movement in the British Isles after World War II. Then his active ministry was brought to an end by a disease that progressively paralyzed his body, even his vocal chords. But the last Resurrection Sunday he spent on earth, still able to move his fingers, he wrote these challenging words: "How

terrible to wake up on Easter and have no voice to shout, “He is risen!” Far worse, to have a voice and not want to shout." PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES There are a great many people with a disability that work in Scotland in supported businesses - which are enterprises where more than half the workforce have a disability. I have the job of developing new ways to provide a sustainable future for this sector. At the same time, we are also trying to deal with the enforced tendering of Remploy plants in Scotland - instead of, as we would prefer, to find the best long term solutions, working with councils and the enterprise network through voluntary agreement. There are five plans in Stage two of the tender process - and I have visited them all and spoke with the staff. Harder working individuals you would not find. It is a matter of deep regret that the Westminster Government is forcing the tendering of these businesses and terminating the financial support they have enjoyed. Here in the Highlands, a great many parents look after adults who need care, and have special needs. There are some great facilities - like Cantraybridge College near Croy which I visited recently and provides day care for a great many young adults who benefit hugely as a result. As a society, I think it would be good to debate more often what we can do for the best for those adults with a disability. One area of work is that all public sector must provide contracts - work - for the supported sector to carry out. So far, 24 contracts have been agreed, and I have met leaders of procurement from the NHS, Police and other public services. I am also arranging for private companies to help - and many are already doing a lot behind the scenes. A team Scotland approach here will, I believe, deliver a fairer deal for adults with a disability, and for adults with particular needs. Fergus Ewing MSP

Whether it’s visiting one of our award-winning dairies like Connage Dairy, meeting with specialist producers like the Really Garlicky Company, or choosing the Supreme Champion at the Grantown Show, I am always keen to speak to and support our local farmers and producers. As a Highland MP, I am very proud of the high quality local goods that we produce here in Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. It is an important industry for many Highland communities – and it often does not get the credit it should. So, you will understand why I am also eager to ensure that our producers and farmers have the opportunity to continue their work and receive a fair deal from retailers. As a role that I have been campaigning for, for many years, I was delighted to see a new grocery ombudsman appointed last month. The new posting will ensure that retailers work with the grocery industry, and not against. As part of the Office of Fair Trading, the adjudicator will have the power to fine offenders and name and shame retailers who are not playing by the rules. I look forward to hearing about how the role has helped the next time I meet with some of our local producers. Danny Alexander MP

Caring about...
...Lichen – fungal growth on the lawn explained ! One of the joys of our wonderful environment up here is the clean air, and one of the organisms which thrives locally is dog lichen. There are hundreds of species here, growing on trees, rocks and on the grass! It is particularly at home on ground which has become compacted and is low on nutrients. It is one of the most common questions we get from baffled homeowners, and many have found that the garden centre people aren’t sure how to deal with it. We shift it by aerating the ground with a big hollowcore tining machine which removes thousands of cores from the ground allowing air to circulate. A regular feeding programme for the lawn strengthens the grass and this tips the balance of conditions back in favour of the grass, as with all things in nature, it’s about competition. There are no chemical products which permanently remove lichen. You need to improve the ground conditions, otherwise nothing really changes. Golf courses do this all the time, and so do we. Aerating the ground at the end of winter should be part of routine lawncare in any case. The freeze/thaw, freeze/thaw weather we get compacts most ground around here which prevents tender new plant roots spreading, even if the grass has had a spring feed. The ground is too solid. I should also mention scarifying now too. All lawns build up thatch and moss over the year and this surface material stifles the competition (lawn grass). It should be raked out, either by hand or much better, with a scarifier. Be warned, this is a back-breaking, dirty job, which I guess is why it is one of the most common jobs we get asked to do for folk at this time of year. We use blade scarifiers, blowers and sweepers, but it’s still a filthy job! Good luck.

Chef’s Confidential Apple Steamed Pudding With A Sticky Toffee Sauce Ingredients 175g Unsalted Butter, softened 4 Eating Apples, peeled, cored and cut into 2cm chunks 130g Golden Caster Sugar 50g Walnuts, toasted and roughly chopped 3 Eggs, beaten 150g Self-Raising Flour Toffee Sauce 175g Light Muscovado Sugar 125g Unsalted Butter 200g Crème Fraiche
1. Melt 25g butter in a large frying pan, add the apple chunks and cook until just tender and starting to turn golden. Add 1 tbsp sugar and continue to cook for a couple of minutes until the apples start to caramelise. Cool and add the walnuts. 2. To make the sauce, tip all of the ingredients into a saucepan and cook until the butter and crème fraiche have melted. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. 3. Tip the apple and walnut mixture into a buttered, 1.5 litre pudding basin. Pour a third of the toffee sauce over and set aside. 4. Beat together the remaining butter and caster sugar until pale and creamy. Gradually add the beaten egg, mixing well between each addition. Fold in the flour with a pinch of salt. Carefully spoon the mixture on top of the apples and spread level. Cover with a pleated sheet of baking parchment and foil, tie securely with string and trim off any excess paper and foil. Put the bowl in a large saucepan and pour boiling water around the bowl so that it comes halfway up the sides. Cover with a lid and steam for 1.5 hours, adding more water to the pan halfway through if needed. 5. Rest the pudding for 2 minutes before turning out into a dish and serving with the remaining warm toffee sauce.

When the party is over... We see in the Bible that we are all unclean in God’s sight because of our sins. You may not think that you are a hell-deserving sinner, but God is Holy and He hates sin. Sin will keep you from being with God in heaven for eternity and damn you to Hell, unless you receive God’s forgiveness for sin which is found only in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s word reveals that if you die in an unclean & unforgiven state, because of your own choice, you’ll go to hell with all the other people who refused God’s mercy. There are many people, and you may be one of them, who believe that life should be one never ending party; friends to meet, places to go, and things to get and do, seeking constant amusement in the pursuit of happiness, needing non-stop activity to fill the emptiness inside, to fight the boredom that surrounds them.
You may think. “That’s okay - all my party friends will be there too!” Yes, sadly they will be there too if they too reject Christ, but the thick blackness of “outer darkness” will separate you from each other. It is a place of torment, never ending fear and punishment and you’ll be there on your own.
Right now you are without God in this world and have no hope, but in Christ Jesus you, who are far off, can be brought near by the blood of Christ; He Drugs, alcohol, immoral relationships, money can be your peace.
