No less importantly, it is also a part of Scottish identity, heritage, tradition and culture. Course Grasses in the Lawn ! I am prompted to mention this now as this spring saw an emergence of course grasses in many lawns, more so than usual. What are course grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, course looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other course grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings.

You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed.

There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coursegrasses, it should take you straight there. They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller wont clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing, because April and May saw drought conditions. Course grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate, even if only for a short spell until the main grass gets going.

/ƚ͛Ɛ Ă ƚŽƐƐ ƵƉ ĂƐ ƚŽ ǁŚŝĐŚ ŝƐ ƚŚĞ ƉƌĞƫĞƌ village, Craigellachie or Aberlour, I suppose it depends on personal preference. Both have hotels, shops; although Craigellachie’s ĂƌĞ ŵŽƌĞ ůŝŵŝƚĞĚ͕ ƐĐŚŽŽůƐ͕ ƉŽƐƚ ŽĸĐĞƐ ĂŶĚ ƉĞƚƌŽů ƐƚĂƟŽŶƐ͘ ďĞƌůŽƵƌ ŝƐ ƚŚĞ ďŝŐŐĞƌ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ two and the railway has in the past served both villages and for our purposes it’s the railway that links them and along whose path we’ll follow. WĂƌŬ ĮƌƐƚ ŝŶ ƌĂŝŐĞůůĂĐŚŝĞ͘ zŽƵ ĐĂŶ ĞŝƚŚĞƌ park in the village itself or on the other side of the main road close-by Thomas Telford’s Craigellachie Bridge. Wherever you choose to park take a closer look at the bridge, people come from all over the world to see it and it’s photographed almost on a daily basis. Weddings and other important gatherings take place here and it’s featured annually on calendars. The bridge changes with the seasons and the weather. It looks spectacular surrounded by the autumnal colours of the trees and, perhaps, even more so when sparkling winter sunshine illuminates the snow. It is though, a tough place to be when the river’s in full spate, if the waters rise, the sandy beach where ĐŚŝůĚƌĞŶ ƉůĂLJ ĂŶĚ ĚŽŐƐ ĐŚĂƐĞ ƐƟĐŬƐ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ summer, disappears under a raging torrent that you’d do well to avoid.

LJ ,ĞŝĚŝ D͘ ^ĂŶĚƐ

From the bridge take the path under the newer road bridge that gives you access to the tennis court area. Walk towards the Highlander Inn and, at the back of the Inn, turn right to pick up the Speyside Way. /ƚ͛Ɛ Ă ƌĞůĂƟǀĞůLJ ŶĂƌƌŽǁ ƉĂƚŚ͕ ǁĞůů ƵƐĞĚ by walkers, cyclists and horse riders on occasion, make sure that you allow for other users and stop or move over when ŶĞĐĞƐƐĂƌLJ͘ >ŽĐĂůƐ ƐŽŵĞƟŵĞƐ ƵƐĞ ƚŚŝƐ ƉĂƚŚ too to move between the two villages, so don’t be surprised to see people pushing buggies or runners on here. The path meanders gently up and down ĂůŽŶŐƐŝĚĞ ƚŚĞ ƌŝǀĞƌ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƐƚ ƉĂƌƚ͘ zŽƵ can see it quite well from here and you’ll ĂůƐŽ ŶŽƟĐĞ ŵĂŶLJ ƌĞůŝĐƐ ĨƌŽŵ ƚŚĞ ƌĂŝůǁĂLJ that once used this route. The largest relic ĐŽŵĞƐ ƋƵŝƚĞ ƐŽŽŶ ĂŌĞƌ ůĞĂǀŝŶŐ ƌĂŝŐĞůůĂĐŚŝĞ by way of the old railway tunnel. It’s long and on dull days can seem very dark once you reach the middle, if you venture along it in the evening do take a torch. Small ĐŚŝůĚƌĞŶ ŵĂLJ ŶĞĞĚ ƚŚĞŝƌ ŚĂŶĚƐ ŚĞůĚ ƵŶƟů you reach the other end where you’ll see the welcome sight of the Spey once again.

Keep on and you’ll reach the old Packho rse Bridge, thought to be one of the oldest st ructures in the village.

Make your way through the trees. Before you reach Aberlour you’ll pass Aberlour House on LJŽƵƌ ůĞŌ ũƵƐƚ ĂďŽǀĞ the road. It’s not possible to see the house from this point which is a shame because it’s worth seeing. It is now owned by Walkers, the biscuit ĐŽŵƉĂŶLJ͕ ďƵƚ ǁĂƐ͕ ƵŶƟů ƌĞůĂƟǀĞůLJ ƌĞĐĞŶƚůLJ͕ the home of Gordonstoun’s preparatory school where children once played and took their lessons. As you near Aberlour itself you’ll pass ƚŚĞ ƌĞĂƌ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŚŽƵƐĞƐ ĂŶĚ ĐŽƩĂŐĞƐ ŽŶ ƚŚĞ ,ŝŐŚ ^ƚƌĞĞƚ͘ DĂŶLJ ŚĂǀĞ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƐƚ ďĞĂƵƟĨƵů gardens with gates that give access onto the path along which you are walking. zŽƵ͛ůů ĂůƐŽ ďĞ ŝŶ ĐůŽƐĞ ƉƌŽdžŝŵŝƚLJ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ƌŝǀĞƌ and able to appreciate its beauty and watch ƚŚĞ ŵĂŶLJ ĮƐŚĞƌŵĞŶ ƚŚĂƚ ĨƌĞƋƵĞŶƚ ƚŚĞ ƉŽŽůƐ and stretches here. tĂůŬ ŽŶ ŝŶƚŽ ƚŚĞ ůŝĐĞ >ŝƩĞƌ WĂƌŬ͕ ǁŚĞƌĞ the path now skirts the grassy area and gives good views of the visitor centre that ŽŶĐĞ ǁĂƐ ƚŚĞ ƌĂŝůǁĂLJ ƐƚĂƟŽŶ͘ /Ĩ LJŽƵ͛ǀĞ ƟŵĞ ĂŶĚ ŝƚ͛Ɛ ŽƉĞŶ ĂǀĂŝů LJŽƵƌƐĞůĨ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶ ĂŶĚ ƚĞĂƌŽŽŵ ŽŶ ŽīĞƌ ŚĞƌĞ͘ The locals are always keen to talk and you can learn more about the whisky industry that is all around.

ĂƌƌLJ ŽŶ ĂůŽŶŐ ƚŚĞ ƉĂƚŚ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ƉĂƌŬ ƵŶƟů you reach the Victoria Bridge. It’s a real ĮŶĚ ĂŶĚ ŝĨ LJŽƵ͛ǀĞ ŶĞǀĞƌ ďĞĞŶ ŽǀĞƌ ŝƚ͕ take a walk across now; it swings. The movement of the bridge is either calming or alarming depending on your point of ǀŝĞǁ͕ ďƵƚ ŝƚ ŐŝǀĞƐ Ă ĨĂŶƚĂƐƟĐ ǀŝƐƚĂ ĨƌŽŵ ƚŚĞ ĐĞŶƚƌĂů ƉŽŝŶƚ ŝŶ ďŽƚŚ ĚŝƌĞĐƟŽŶƐ ĂůŽŶŐ ƚŚĞ ƌŝǀĞƌ͘ /Ĩ LJŽƵ͛ǀĞ Ă ŵŝŶĚ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƟŵĞ LJŽƵ ĐĂŶ ĐŽŶƟŶƵĞ ŽŶ ŽǀĞƌ ƚŚĞ ďƌŝĚŐĞ ĂŶĚ ƚĂŬĞ ƚŚĞ path behind the stone house in front of you. Keep on this path, ignoring the turning, ever upward through the trees. &ŽůůŽǁ ƚŚĞ ĚŝƌĞĐƟŽŶĂů ƐŝŐŶƐ ĂŶĚ ŬĞĞƉ ŐŽŝŶŐ ƌŝŐŚƚ͕ ƐƟůů ƉƌŽĐĞĞĚŝŶŐ ƵƉŚŝůů͘ Ɛ LJŽƵ ƌĞĂĐŚ the top by the bench, turn round and look back at Aberlour, it’s well worth the pull ƵƉŚŝůů͘ dŚĞƌĞ ŝƐ Ă ƐŝŐŶ ũƵƐƚ ĂďŽǀĞ ƚŚŝƐ ƉŽŝŶƚ that will take you to Archiestown, but for our purpose we are going to retrace our footsteps, back downhill, over the Victoria ƌŝĚŐĞ ĂŶĚ ŝŶƚŽ ƚŚĞ ůŝĐĞ >ŝƩĞƌ WĂƌŬ͘ Once over the bridge and into the park, ƚƵƌŶ ƌŝŐŚƚ ĂŶĚ ĐŽŶƟŶƵĞ ŽŶ ƚŽǁĂƌĚƐ ƚŚĞ ŶĞǁ metal bridge. Don’t cross this bridge, turn ůĞŌ ĂůŽŶŐƐŝĚĞ ƚŚĞ >ŽƵƌ ƵƌŶ͖ ŝƚ͛Ɛ ƉƌĞƩLJ ŚĞƌĞ͕ ĞƐƉĞĐŝĂůůLJ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ƐƉƌŝŶŐ ǁŚĞŶ ƚŚĞ ŇŽǁĞƌƐ ŵĂŬĞ ŝƚ ǀĞƌLJ ĂƩƌĂĐƟǀĞ͘ <ĞĞƉ ŽŶ ĂŶĚ LJŽƵ͛ůů reach the old Packhorse Bridge, thought to be one of the oldest structures in the village. It’s not advisable to try and access the bridge, but you can marvel at the narrowness and imagine the horses that once walked by this way carrying their wares.

WĞĞƉ ŽǀĞƌ ƚŚĞ ǁĂůů ŽŶ LJŽƵƌ ůĞŌ ŝŶƚŽ ƚŚĞ cemetery. It’s rumoured that Hare, one half of the infamous pair Burke and Hare may be buried here. Cross the road in front of the Aberlour ĚŝƐƟůůĞƌLJ͖ ƚŚĞLJ ŚĂǀĞ Ă ƐŚŽƉ ŚĞƌĞ ĨŽƌ ƚŚŽƐĞ ǁŚŽ ĂƉƉƌĞĐŝĂƚĞ ƚŚĞ ĮŶĞƌ ƚŚŝŶŐƐ ŝŶ ůŝĨĞ͘ &ŽůůŽǁ the sign for the Linn Falls and walk on, ever ƵƉǁĂƌĚ ƉĂƐƐŝŶŐ ƚŚĞ ĚŝƐƟůůĞƌLJ ŽŶ LJŽƵƌ ƌŝŐŚƚ ĂŶĚ the sound of running water. If you keep your eyes open you may even see a dipper or two at the water’s edge. Passing ancient trees the ƉĂƚŚ ŚĂƐ ƐĞǀĞƌĂů ƐƚĞĞƉ ĂŶĚ ƐƚŽŶLJ ƐĞĐƟŽŶƐ͕ take care and slow down where needed. It’s worth the toil to reach the Falls; they are most ƵŶĞdžƉĞĐƚĞĚ ĂŶĚ ƋƵŝƚĞ ďĞĂƵƟĨƵů͘ dĂŬĞ ƐŽŵĞ ƟŵĞ ƚŽ ĂƉƉƌĞĐŝĂƚĞ ƚŚĞ ǁĂƚĞƌĨĂůů ŚĞƌĞ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ peace and quiet that is all around. /Ĩ LJŽƵ͛ǀĞ ƟŵĞ ĐŽŶƟŶƵĞ ƵƉ ƚŚĞ ƐƚĞƉƐ Ăƚ ƚŚĞ side of the waterfall, taking care as you ĚŽ ƐŽ͘ dŚĞƌĞ ĂƌĞ ŵŽƌĞ ƐƚĞĞƉ ƐĞĐƟŽŶƐ ǁŝƚŚ smaller falls of water at which to marvel. zŽƵ͛ǀĞ ƚǁŽ ĐŚŽŝĐĞƐ ŶŽǁ͕ LJŽƵ ĐĂŶ ĞŝƚŚĞƌ return the way that you came or you can turn ůĞŌ͕ ŬĞĞƉ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ĐĞŶƚƌĂů ĨŽŽƚƉĂƚŚ͕ ƉĂƐƐŝŶŐ ŽŶƚŽ a wider path and into the top part of Aberlour. From here you may proceed downhill on a ƌŽƵƚĞ ŽĨ LJŽƵƌ ŽǁŶ ĐŚŽŽƐŝŶŐ ƵŶƟů LJŽƵ ƌĞĂĐŚ the High Street. There you can access the ůŝĐĞ >ŝƩĞƌ WĂƌŬ ĂŶĚ ƌĞƚƵƌŶ ƚŽ ƌĂŝŐĞůůĂĐŚŝĞ͘ zŽƵ ĐĂŶ ĂůƐŽ ǁĂůŬ ĂůŽŶŐ ƚŚĞ ,ŝŐŚ ^ƚƌĞĞƚ to the end of the village and pick up the path there. Whichever way you choose to return to Craigellache, this is a walk of unfolding beauty. 37
