Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings These days it is all too easy to wonder if anyone is in control anywhere in the world. Here in the UK MPs appear to be utterly worn out and fatigued by the machinations surrounding Brexit, whilst in the USA, there seems to be paralysis and there have been Government shutdowns. Meanwhile in Venezuela, there is an economic crisis of epic proportions and the opposition leader has declared himself interim-President in rivalry with the incumbent. Amidst the apparent chaos, however, the Bible reminds us of one important fact. Jesus, the one who was rejected by men, is King of Kings, for “The kingdom is the Lord’s and he is the governor among the nations.” Unlike many princes and politicians, he is a wise, powerful, everlasting, universal, peaceloving King – for “the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace”. No place, no person and no thing is outwith his control. The fact that Christ reigns is a great comfort to those who believe in Jesus and submit to him. Once rebels, they

have come to see how they have sinned against him, violating his law as summarised in the Ten Commandments and exemplified in his own perfectly holy life. Having turned from sin and embraced his offers of mercy and forgiveness through his own death, they have come to trust in Christ for life and salvation. They rejoice that the governor of the nations is now their friend and are heartened to know that he is in control of all things. Although many things in life may seem strange, and at times life’s troubles may overwhelm, they are glad that life is not in the hands of random chance, or the wicked, but that the Lord reigns. “He brings the wind out of his treasuries.” Even the snow and the frost are in his hands. Thus, even when his ways seem mysterious, there is comfort in knowing that he does all things well and for a purpose. Indeed, he has promised that even the hard things in life are for the good of his people. “Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face.” If only his people would learn to see the wise, good hand of God in all that happens, they would have more comfort and peace.

page 6 - March 2019

Sadly there are many who refuse to acknowledge Christ, the King, or submit to his rule. Their cry is, “We will not have this man to reign over us.” Their rebellion is folly, for, whatever man thinks, Christ remains man’s lawgiver and judge. They may rebel but they cannot escape from his control or evade giving an account of themselves on the day of judgment. How fearful it will be on that day for puny rebels to meet the almighty King. He will banish them to the Hell they deserve. There will be no mercy given on that day to those who oppose him or ignore him. Thankfully, for the living it is still a time of mercy. The King is still welcoming sinners who come in repentance to him. He is most merciful to those who turn to him. He grants life and forgiveness to those who deny self, take up the cross and follow him. Those who are wise will submit to him now. Not to is to provoke him to wrath and endanger forever your immortal soul. Rev Graeme Craig Free Church Continuing Stornoway

Parliament Blog & Tide Times

The projected depopulation of our island communities has rightly been higher up the news agenda in recent years.

The figures make for concerning reading. The National Records of Scotland projections show a decrease for the Western Isles of 4.8% by 2026. The figures are even more stark for the working age population. There are a variety of things we need to do to try and reverse this trend; building more houses, bringing in more jobs and improving connectivity to name but a few. But one thing we also need to do is to challenge the various negative stereotypes people have painted about the islands. The Western Isles boast some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery, as well as a vibrant traditional culture. We have one of the lowest crime rates in Scotland and one of the highest rates of happiness and fulfilment. We are consistently identified as one of the best places in Britain to raise children. The Western Isles are a truly wonderful place to live and we should not be so shy about promoting these facts relentlessly.

As from April 2019, we will be welcoming a regular Parliamentary Blog from your local MP, Angus MacNeil. We’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to the fold and thank him for taking the time out from his busy parliamentary schedule to contribute to the magazine.

Dr Alasdair Allan MSP

MACLENNAN CONTRACTORS C I V I L S

A N D

Maclennan Contractors was established in 2002, starting out with only a digger and a lorry, carrying out small private contracts covering all groundworks. Following the award of several contracts in 2008, Maclennan Contractors expanded, adding two new excavators and lorries along with some other required plant. In 2009 Maclennan was employing 15 personnel, carrying out contracts for both the private and public sector. The arrival of 2012 saw further expansion, with Maclennan Contractors now undertaking machine tarmac laying for road repairs and driveways. They have been successful in being awarded works throughout Lewis and Harris, and look forward to continuing in this vein for many years to come.

S U R F A C I N G

The purchase of a top soil recycling machine in 2013 allowed Maclennan Contractors to deliver quality topsoil to Lewis and Harris, with a new machine upping production to 80 tonne an hour in 2016. Mr Maclennan, the owner/director, has over 27 years' experience in the industry, having worked with local companies from the age of 16. He is a strong believer in starting from the bottom and working your way up through the ranks. Maclennan Contractors is keen to employ young apprentices, giving them the experience and opportunity they need to become skilled tradesmen as either plant operators or labourers, and from the very first has strived to employ local apprentices and skilled tradesmen – a practice they continue to this day!

February is the hardest month in the garden in some ways, and it can be difficult to be aware of the rumblings that are starting to happen in some of our plants and trees at the moment. In our ubiquitous Birch trees for example, the sap will be starting to rise in earnest any day. There are jobs to do in the garden this month to get everything ready for the spring, and it is always satisfying anyway to have a good pre-spring tidy up. With the lack of foliage on many shrubs, and other plants having died back for the winter, now is a great time to get really stuck into your flowerbeds getting debris, leaves and twigs tidied up. Be careful, however, of enthusiastic bulbs and herbaceous perennials, some of which are peaking above the surface already. Ornamental grasses need work at this time of year too. Deciduous grasses should be cut back, ready

22

Overgrown hedges can be renovated at this time of year as well. They will be clear of nesting birds at the moment and they will tolerate a hard cut, so if you need to do a major tidy or reduce the size of a hedge then now is the time. Be aware though that the likes of Cypress hedges, like Leylandii, will not re-grow if you cut past the green growth, so you need to be careful with them. Snowdrops are making an appearance right now, the last flowers of the winter. Snowdrop bulbs are really difficult to succeed with, so transplanting them ‘in the green’ is the best way to get them started. This means waiting until the flowers have gone over and then transplanting the individual plants. You can buy them like this, or perhaps a friendly neighbour might be kind enough to let you take some that you can then let naturalise in your own garden. Finally, lawn repairs are best carried out at this time of year. Re-cut the edges to flowerbeds and spike any boggy patches. If you spike patches in your lawn remember to brush in a sharp sand and top soil mixture. If you would like to see more of what I get up to, you can check out my website at www.angelhort.com

WESTERN ISLES INSULATION MOVES INTO CONSTRUCTION Managing Directors, Marc Burrows and Cornelius Kleynhans recently announced an expansion into the construction industry which launched in early 2019 through their new Western Isles Construction service. Already engaged in their first project in Achmore (an interesting home renovation project), Western Isles Construction is ‘building’ on their good reputation gained over tha last 2/3 years in providing insulation services. Marc, originally from Lancashire, and South-African born Cornelius have been in the energy efficiency industry for some 10 years now and have been partners for

four years. They met whilst engaged in a joint project and have been firm friends and business partners since. The company ethos has always been to put ‘Quality at the heart of what we do’ and in their insulation work they have built up an enviable reputation for just that - quality at good prices! Now they are bringing this same mantra to construction. Marc and Cornelius have really taken to island life engaging in their outdoor hobbies of golf, mountain biking and running. In fact, Marc told us that he has entered the Hebridean Marathon taking place later this year and so fitness work is very much on his mind - that is once he has scraped the Lewis mud off his bike! They both have an affinity for outdoor life and often take the opportunity to get out into the wilderness.

Both businesses employ 90% local people and are proud of the employment opportunities that they have opened up for locals. The company is especially keen to hear from people who would like apprenticeships and they are hoping to set up closer links with the colleges to make sure that this message gets through to school leavers and above. Based at 9 North Beach in Stornoway, the team offer their free insulation services and construction expertise from Lewis to South Uist. Both directors are getting used to doing business on the island which does take a greater degree of forward planning, but this is becoming easier as they continue to get more familiar with delivery schedules and timetables. In addition to the construction projects, the team will soon be able to offer plumbing, electrical works, decorating, joinery, plastering and roofing as part of their new activities. They already have the expertise within the existing team, so it's just a case of growing what they already do and, instead of being grant-funded, have paying customers. Marc and Cornelius have a genuine passion for their work which shines through in the quality of what they produce and are working towards a lasting legacy of a long-term business. The Wych Elm

By Kay Featherstone, Catherine Allinson

By Tana French One night changes everything for Toby Hennessey. A brutal attack leaves him damaged and traumatised, unsure even of the person he used to be. He seeks refuge at his family's ancestral home, the Ivy House, filled with memories of wild-strawberry summers and teenage parties with his cousins. But not long after Toby's arrival, a discovery is made: a skull, tucked neatly inside the old wych elm in the garden. As detectives begin to close in, Toby is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about his family, his past, and himself.

Seven Signs of Life

By Aoife Abbey Junior Fiction (Under 5s)

The Wonky Donkey By Craig Smith

The book behind the YouTube sensation of a granny reading this story to her grandchild, viewed over 3 million times. Who ever heard of a spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky winky wonky donkey?

Grief. Anger. Joy. Fear. Distraction. Disgust. Hope. All emotions we expect to encounter over our lifetime. But what if this was every day? And what if your ability to manage them was the difference between life and death? For a doctor in Intensive Care this is part of the job. Fear in the eyes of a terminally ill patient who pleads with you to not let them die. Grief when you make a potentially fatal mistake. Disgust at caring for a convicted rapist. But there are also moments of joy, like the rare bright spots of lucidity for a dementia patient, or when the ward unexpectedly breaks into song.

We Must be Brave By Francesa Liardet Spanning the sweep of the twentieth century, We Must Be Brave is a luminous and profoundly moving novel about the people we rescue and the ways in which they rescue us back. December, 1940. As German bombs fall on Southampton, the city’s residents flee to the surrounding villages. In Upton village, amid the chaos, newly-married Ellen Parr finds a girl sleeping, unclaimed at the back of an empty bus. Little Pamela, it seems, is entirely alone. As the war rages on, love grows where it was least expected, surprising them all. But with the end of the fighting comes the realization that Pamela was never theirs to keep

This Lie Will Kill You By Chelsea Pitcher One year ago, there was a party. At the party, someone died. Five teens all played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth. But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize. Instead, they realise they've been lured together by a person bent on revenge who wants to finally unravel the truth about what actually happened that deadly night, one year ago.
