Pastoral letter and Church Meetings
I’ve been preaching recently through a part of the book of Acts and came to Chapter 8. It describes the ministry of a man called Philip who was one of the first preachers to leave Jerusalem after the death and resurrection of Jesus. It’s fascinating to read again about how, under his ministry, many, many people came to be followers of Jesus, despite outwardly unlikely circumstances, including the first African convert, a man who’d been on a journey to Jerusalem. 34
The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptised?” [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
Seeing as how it was Philip’s excellent knowledge of the Bible that resulted in this unlikely African conversion I was reminded of a story told by the American preacher, Jay Adams. One Monday morning he received a whispered phonecall from a lady in his congregation, asking him which verses in the Bible she could quote to prove to someone that Jesus really was God come into this world in human form. ‘Why are you whispering?’ he asked. ‘Because I’ve got some Jehovah’s Witnesses here and I’m not sure what to say to them!’ ‘Well, it’s a good day for that’, he said. ‘You were in church last night when I preached on that very subject! You should know exactly what to say to them!’ ‘I know’, she replied, ‘but I didn’t realise last night that I would need to know this today!’ I think most of us can identify with that story. How often we can’t remember something important at the right moment - sometimes because we weren’t listening well enough at the time. The only solution is to strive to be more attentive in future so that we don’t get caught out the next time. In spiritual things, the best thing is to be as familiar with the Bible as possible - the

more we read it, the more likely we are to remember it, and the more likely we are to live our lives by it. But that requires a commitment to God and to his word that comes neither easily nor naturally, and yet which brings such satisfying results. One of the youngsters in our congregation said to me recently one Saturday night, ‘I’m so excited about tomorrow!’ I thought there might be something going on with her family, (who are not churchgoers), or her friends the next day, but when I enquired what was happening she said, ‘I just can’t wait to find out what Philip did next!’ It must be every minister’s dream to see the word of God that has gripped his own heart, and the hearts of others over the years, begin to generate that kind of excited response in the heart of the next generation. And to see that same amazing power of God that was at work in the Middle East two thousand years ago in the days of Philip, still at work today in the lives of young people right here in Nairn. extraCts from the Draft minutes of the meeting of 31st may 2011 of nairn suBurBan Community CounCiL
Police Report • P.s. hansen gave an update on april / may crime statistics for the area. there has been an increase on vandalism to motor vehicles in tradespark area recently and she asks that such matters be reported immediately to give them a better overview as to when they are occurring. • C.Cllr. mackie ask if more attention could be given to the ‘rat-run’ complaints on sandown farm Lane / altonburn road. Approve Agenda the agenda was approved with the addition of nairn forum requested by C. Cllr. a. noble. Approval Of Previous Minute Previous minutes were moved by C. Cllr. mackie and seconded by C. Cllr. D. youngson. Matters Arising the meeting moved on to receive a ‘presentation’ by Paula Betts from thC Waste management, on the forthcoming changes to waste collections. the new ‘Blue Bins’ should be delivered soon and the new collections will start on 4th. July 2011. following the presentation questions were asked about the new waste management. Large families of 6 or more, or people with medical conditions that generates large quantities of waste could apply for additional rubbish Bins; Businesses who generate large amounts of waste could make arrangements with the Council to address their concerns and particular needs. Questions were raised about glass recycling in suburban’s area, and it is hoped to include glass collection in the future. C.Cllr. h. thompson then thanked page 10 - July 2011
Paula for the presentation. Sandown Lands Comm. Cllr. youngson reported that he has written to thC Planning + local members asking for a meeting to discuss ideas for sandown development, including nsCC; Wetlands & Woodlands and allotment society. A96 & Road Works Comm. Cllr. mackie reported that since returning from holiday, he is concerned about the amount of complaints about sandown farm Lane/ altonburn road ‘rat run’. this happens every time road works occur in nairn and needs to be addressed by thC before something serious happens. Will write and ask for site meeting and will include nWCC in the meeting. C.C. Joint Meeting (11/5/2011) Comm. Cllr. youngson gave a brief resume of the meeting which had failed to reach agreement on having one C.C. for nairn but agreed to hold joint meetings to discuss matters affecting the whole of nairn (about 4 per year). Comm. Cllr. mackie asked if the proposed meeting to be held in July was to be ‘an open meeting’. he was informed that those attending the meeting on 11/5/11 had agreed to hold the July meeting ‘in camera’. a lengthy discussion followed which resulted in Comm. Cllr. mackie making it clear that he would not attend such a meeting unless it was open. We have just gone through an 18 month consultation on C.C. rules and regulation which comes into force in november 2011 so we don’t need more meetings to agree ‘rules’. Comm. Cllr. mackie pointed out that C.C.’s were not ‘decision making bodies’, they tel: 01309 690063
acted as the ears and voices of the communities they served, and this can only be accomplished if the public are included. the meeting decided to contact mr. gilfillan and nWCC & nrCC to let them know that we nsCC were unhappy about holding the July meeting in private, and that all meetings should be held in public. Comm. Cllr. noble was concerned that if nWCC & nrCC did not share this concern, the joint meetings would not be held. Comm. Cllr. mackie replied that that situation would have to be addressed if or when it arose. Ward Forum Comm. Cllr. noble had requested this item, and reported that there is a need to clarify what the roles of the various bodies is, so that everyone knows who does what, and who is responsible for what. this was agreed by the meeting and will be debated at a future meeting. Correspondence asCC membership renewal is due and will be forwarded to asCC soon. Treasurer’s Report treasurer reported £545.76 in funds.

“ Parliament Blog
Due to unforseen circumstances, there is no Blog from Danny Alexander this month.
Danny Alexan der MP
The new Parliament with a majority SNP members feels entirely different from the first three. The mood though is not triumphalist - we do try to reach out to all parties and build up a strong case on new jobs and grasping the opportunities that lie ahead for the next 5 years. It is a younger parliament which is a good thing. Many of the new intakes are young - or at least by my 53 year old standards - and they bring a passion and energy to the debates.

Pulling on the dress shirt the other night to attend my first formal dinner, as Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, I made a surprise discovery. My daughter, Natasha, is 3. I put said shirt in a case, when leaving home in Boat of Garten. When I got to Edinburgh and opened the case, I discovered immediately that Tasha was thinking of me, perhaps that I was not eating enough. She put on top of my shirt in the suitcase a plate of bread and butter smeared with raspberry jam, which of course coated the front of my once crisp, ironed white shirt. So, even Ministers can be brought down to earth!

How good is good enough? Just how good does a person have to be to earn eternal life? According to God’s standard (the only standard that really counts) a person would have to live an absolutely perfect life to earn eternal life. Not one lie; not one bad thought; not one disrespectful word to their parents, etc. Perfect. Do you think you have fulfilled and maintained this strict standard? Romans 3:19 says, “...what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.â€? You see we have all broken God’s law and the whole world stands guilty before God! No one can argue that they have lived a perfect life. No one ‌ not you, not me, no one. We don’t like to think about it, but it’s true ‌we all have sinned – broken God’s law (Romans 3:10, 23). We have ALL offended a holy God, who will by no means pass by sin.
How bad is too bad?
So, none are without sin, but none are without hope, either. The Lord wants “all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:4). A sinner in Bible times asked the question “What do I have to do to be saved? The answer was simple, yet profound, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. (Acts 16:31). On the cross of Calvary, Jesus Christ was satisfying the just demands of God’s law against sinners - He was made sin that we might, through him, be made righteous. In order for God to no longer see us as guilty hell-deserving sinners, and fit us for heaven, we each need by faith to personally accept that Christ died in our place. God’s redeeming love for sinners is found only in Christ, and the sinner is out of Christ. Put your trust in the finished work (death, burial, and resurrection) of the Lord Jesus Christ, and God will save you by faith in His Son and give you the gift of the Holy Spirit to enable you to live for Him and know Him as your Lord.“...if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (Romans 10:9). Be done with your pride and bow your knee to the Lord Jesus. Only when a sinner turns from his sin and bows to Jesus as Lord and Saviour, can he have eternal life.
Maybe you think you have sinned so much that there is no forgiveness for you. God is Holy, but He loves to forgive. God loves you and is not willing that any should perish. He showed his love toward us in that “while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Romans No matter how good you think you are or how bad 5:8). you think you are, the Lord saves all those who come To those who turn from their sin and receive Jesus to Him in faith. The Lord Jesus says “ him that cometh to Christ as their Saviour and Lord, He assures us, “I will Me I will in no wise cast out (John 6:37). forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no Reject Him no longer. Eternity in Hell is a long more (Jeremiah 31:34). . We do not have to go to that time to remember that you rejected Christ. place of torment which the Lord Jesus calls hell.
NO ONE IS SO GOOD THAT THEY DON’T NEED TO BE SAVED. NO ONE IS SO BAD THAT THEY CAN’T BE SAVED.
““The The S cripture ha th concluded concluded all under sin, tha Scripture hath thatt the pr promise omise by faith of Jesus Christ Christ might might b e giv en tto o them tha believe. by be given thatt believe.

Chef’s Confidential This chicken dish is a slight twist on the one we offer as part of the 2 course for £7.95 lunch special that is proving very popular.
Grilled Honey and Mustard Chicken Skewers Serves 4 4 chicken breasts cut into strips Bamboo skewers 2 tablespoons clear honey 2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard Chilli Dip 1 fresh red chilli, seeded and cut into fine dice 2 tablespoons clear honey 1 tablespoon wholegrain mustard
Cut the chicken breast into strips. Mix the honey and mustard together. Marinate the chicken in the honey and mustard mixture, for a couple of hours or overnight in the fridge. Soak the bamboo skewers for 20 minutes in water, this helps prevent them from burning. Mix together all the dip ingredients and place in a ramekin. When ready to cook place the marinated chicken on to the skewers. Cook either on the BBQ or in a frying pan until golden and fully cooked, turn halfway through cooking. Serve with a crisp salad, and minted new potatoes for a delicious light Summer dish. Penny Ellis, Owner Knockomie Hotel, Forres tel: 01309 673146

Local is best!
Jock with a mini box, Geordie with a standard and Archie with a crate
Fresh vegetables, in-season produce all locally grown and hand delivered directly to your door. Sounds too good to be true? This service is now available to the local community through the development of the 'Veg Box Scheme'. Many individual farms have began to offer these types of products, selections of fresh fruit and veg straight from the farm to your household, missing out the middle man giving you more value for money. Local farmer Jock Scott is no different and after years of supplying large supermarket chains with a variety of products, established the company 'Scotgro' in 2009, providing the Inverness-shire and Moray with handpicked produce from their farm at Broombank, Auldearn. The company’s main objective is to ensure the freshest products are delivered each week to their customers. Unlike supermarket produce, the seasonal vegetables, and fruit during the summer months, only ever travel the distance between the farm and your doorstep. Providing the customers with a selection of only the freshest, locally grown goods, at a competitive price. What's available from Scotgro? Scotgro offer individual boxes to suit each customers household, ranging from the 'Mini - box' packed for an individual or couple, 'Standard box' which can accommodate two to four people up to the 'crate' option which contains enough
produce for a family of up to seven people. Delivery of the boxes to your house can be arranged on a weekly, fortnight or one off basis. You also have the handy option of being able to pause your deliveries if you are having a week away or feeling 'vegged-out' Another handy element of Scotgro is that you have the option to enter which vegetables you enjoyed and those which you would prefer in your box, ensuring you wont receive anything to your household which will go to waste. Check out their website to view a full range of produce on offer, and if you think this quick and easy way to get your weekly supply of vegetables is for you, order one online now www.scotgro.com

A SpotLight on Creel fishing by Donald Crichton
Dan Dan the Lobster Man I have had a bit of an obsession with seafood in general and shellfish in particular for some years now having first tasted a delicious spider crab in a French Restaurant in St Malo in Brittany.
The experience is best described as “interactive” involving many weird and wonderful implements to extract as much of the tender meat as possible. It can also be a lengthy process and is therefore best shared with some good friends and good bottle of wine. Shortly after this experience I tasted my first lobster and fully understand why it is often called the King of meats. Imagine my delight when someone told me that fresh local shellfish including lobsters were available near to Lossiemouth. I knew that the coastal waters along the Moray Firth were a rich breeding ground for shellfish but had always been told that it was difficult if not impossible to buy these products locally as they were all sold for export. Well – the great news is that I was completely wrong. Whilst much of the local shellfish caught along the Moray Firth Coast does indeed go for export there is now a shop outlet in Covesea
32
Café, near Lossiemouth selling cooked and raw Crab, Lobster, Langoustine and Smoked Mackerel. And who is responsible for this – one lone lossie loon – Dan Flett. Born and Bred in Lossie, Dan has been Creel Fishing (Creel is the local term for the pots used to catch shellfish) for some 40 odd years (starting after and before school at the age of 13!). Local Teacher, Jimmy Stevens, used to pick up the young Dan and take him out in all weathers and taught many of the best fishing locations, which Dan still uses today. Dan recalls that his first unofficial salary for a weeks work was £36 which in 1973 was a small fortune for a 13 year old! Dan was kind enough to invite me out on one of his fishing trips, which was
certainly an experience. Dan shared his real passion for shellfish – who else without a passion would put in back breaking shifts of 12 hours a day (minimum!)? For Dan, Creel fishing is not about the money – whilst he is able to make a living – it is more about using wisely local produce that is just waiting to be enjoyed. Dan has a cheerful and
indeed very healthy disposition which he puts down to the outdoor lifestyle, and the only thing that caused a furrowed brow was discussion about illegal fishers who did not return female’s (hen’s) back to the sea when laden with eggs which shows Dan’s commitment to the future of the Lobster stock. Whilst lobster fishing is indeed hard work Dan sees it as a labour of love and whilst he has had the occasional break for Deep Sea Trawler fishing – his heart has always been with the Creels – and from a personally biased perspective – may this long be the case! Dan’s shellfish may be purchased from Covesea Cafe, Lossiemouth 01343 815454 or direct from Dan himself at the harbourside by calling 01343 813624 or 07854861569.
Lobster with Thousand Dressing You can’t beat lobsters just as they are with a little Lemon, Mayo and Crusty Brown Bread. But if you want to be a little more adventurous without losing the fresh taste of Lobster then try this Dressing. Mix together: 3 tbsp ready made Mayonnaise
Dash of Worcester Sauce 2 tbsp Tomato Ketchup Pinch Cayenne Pepper Juice of half a Lemon A Red Pepper and a Yellow Pepper finely diced 2 tbsp Spring Onions thinly sliced Add dressing to roughly Chopped Meat from a Cooked Lobster. Serve on a Crusty Bread Roll or spoon mixture back into shell and serve with a rice salad accompanied by Crisp Lettuce Greens - and enjoy!
