All elections over now - at least until next year anyway! Whether the result went well for you personally or not I guess we should remember those countries that do not have the benefit of any elections at all or where elections are routinely rigged. We should spare a thought for all the political prisoners who are being held in places like Indonesia, Thailand, Tibet and North Korea to name just a few.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Our Father! It is great that we can celebrate certain days of the year to show our appreciation to those we love and value. For example, Father’s Day is just one of those days. In fact, this month many people will make a special effort to visit their father with a variety of gifts and cards. At the same time, there are all these special slogans that we are all so familiar with: ‘The World’s Best Dad’. Anyway, one of God’s commands is to honour our parents - see Exodus 20:12. On the other hand, there are people who have only negative memories of their father. And there are others who have never even met their father. Therefore, there are many misconceptions about how people understand God as our heavenly Father because of their past. The good news is that our heavenly Father is not angry or distant; but He is loving, kind, and gentle. There are so many Bible verses that highlight God’s love for us - and one example is from Matthew 6:26: ‘Look at the birds of the

air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?’ The truth is that God wants to lavish His wonderful love on us. Even so, love is not something that can be forced on us. The reality is that there are a lot of hurting people who are afraid of being hurt again, so they shut others out. As a result, many people have grown up with a lack of love in their life. And there are many people who may know something is missing, but they might not be able to identify what that emptiness is. All they know is that they need to try and fill the void. People deal with it differently - some try to fill the void with relationships, material possessions or something else. Sadly, other people look to dull the emptiness with all kinds of addictions. There is only one place to find true love, acceptance and significance. So no matter what people do, if they do not encounter the love of God, then they will always be left with a feeling of emptiness.

page 6 - June 2015

Now the only thing stopping people from having a real relationship with God is the sin issue. After all, sin separates people from God. It is uncomfortable to hear such words, but that is the truth. Nevertheless, God the Father made a way for people to come to Him by sending His only son, Jesus Christ, to earth. As a result, Jesus took upon Himself the weight of our sin, so that we could be born into His wonderful family. It is a family where people of all cultures and nationalities can experience the wonderful love of God. Incidentally, Jesus’ words are recorded in the Gospels about His wonderful, loving, caring Father. For that reason, Jesus wants to restore people to a relationship with their heavenly Father. The question is: ‘Do you want this kind of relationship where you can truly know of the amazing love of God?’

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Don’t be Shy. Use a Sprinkler – it’s FREE (and the grass will love it) I often think the Moray Firth has a climate, the rest of Scotland just has weather! We also have a lot of sand around however. The reasonably dry climate, sometimes drying winds, and sandy soil, mean that the grass dries up pretty quickly in these parts. Grass is a plant, like any other plant, and it responds well to regular watering. If we have a week of dry, sunny weather, the grass begins to brown off. This puts unnecessary stress on the plant, and weakens it. A weak plant is unable to compete for moisture and nutrients as effectively, as well as losing its’ colour. It puts up less of a challenge for the competition out there, and that means weeds and moss. 30 minutes each evening in a dry spell (less evaporation then) with a sprinkler on will stop this quite easily. Many people have a sprinkler already (but it’s in the garage and has

Alastair Watt

been for years – right?). Grass will also quickly be overcome by moss if it’s cut too short, probably the worst thing you can do. Don’t mow less than 1”. Think shag pile carpet, you wont be far off. Take the blades up a notch. The grass will be greener, stronger, and look after itself much better.

Forres Highland Games 2015

Ken Davies - Chieftain 2015 The annual celebration of Scottish sport and entertainment that is Forres Highland Games, takes place at Grant Park on Saturday the 4th of July, with the Opening Ceremony commencing at 12.30 pm. The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain Mr Ken Davies, an Athletics Official of many years standing, who will welcome all the; spectators, athletes, dancers, pipers, cyclists and pipe bands, to what will be a colourful and competitive spectacle for all concerned. Over the years a number of famous and developing athletes have competed at Forres Highland Games, entertaining the crowds and displaying a high standard of competitive action. Local Highland Games such as Forres have been a nurturing ground for many young athletes throughout the years; with Jamie Bowie (Inverness Harriers), Rachael McKenzie (Inverness Harriers) and Mark Dry (Elgin AAC), who all proudly wore the Blue Scottish Vest at last year’s Commonwealth Games.

There will be an event packed Highland Dancing competition open to all ages, which is always extremely popular viewing with our overseas visitors, as will the solo piping competition. However, the highlight of the afternoon is the assembly of the Massed Pipe Bands. The first Saturday in July is synonymous with Forres Highland Games; however it would not be possible without the dedication of the Games committee, volunteer judges and many local businesses who have been outstanding supporters of this classical celebration of Scottish culture. Baked Pears with Cinnamon Served with a Crème Anglaise Sauce Serves 4 Ingredients Sauce: 2 egg yolks 60g/2oz sugar Vanilla pod (or vanilla essence) 250ml /1/2pt milk Lemon rind, finely grated, to decorate

Pears: 4 ripe pears 2 tbsp lemon juice 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 60g/2oz butter Method Pears:

Sauce: 200oC.

Core Preheat the oven to and peel the pears, then slice them in half lengthwise and brush all over with the lemon juice. Place the pears, cored side down, in a small non-stick roasting tin.

Bring the milk and vanilla pod to the boil, remove the pod, pour milk onto the egg yolks and sugar, stirring all the time.

Place the sugar, cinnamon and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has melted. Keep the heat low to stop too much water evaporating.

Continue cooking, without boiling, until the mixture coats the back of a spoon.

Spoon the mixture over the pears. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pears are tender and golden, occasionally spooning the sugar mixture over the fruit during the cooking time.

Return to the stove and cook, but do not boil.

To serve: Pour the sauce over the base of the warm dessert plate. Arrange two pear halves on the plate and decorate with grated lemon rind. Stuart Aitken, Head Chef, Eight Acres Hotel
