The Editor

Every January the USA celebrates Martin Luther King Day. Although most are familiar with him and his "I have a Dream" speech, I doubt many of us know what his dream was or whether it came true. He actually spoke about several dreams in that speech (which I would recommend you watch or listen to) but they were all based around a central theme - that all people are created equal. Is that something that we recognise in modern society? Despite the tireless efforts of thousands of individuals like King who have and continue to work for equality, we still encounter racism, gender bias, and many other 'phobias' and prejudices.

Like lots of others, I’ve been mourning the passing of Leonard Cohen. His use of words, the images he painted with them, and his observations of humanity in all its colour and brokenness….all of that combined to make a great poet and song writer whose words seem almost timeless. One of my favourite lines is from his song “Anthem”: “There is a crack, a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in.” New Year brings lists of new year’s resolutions and often a sense that we need to make ourselves better. The 30 day abs challenge, giving up smoking, January detox. All those sorts of things are popular this month! Maybe the excesses of the holidays make us even more aware than usual that we’re not as perfect as we’d want to be. Leonard Cohen knew that we weren’t perfect. But his sense that we need to stop trying is liberating. Indeed, our beauty is

more than on the surface. Paul, in his second letter to the church in Corinth, talks about us having the light of Jesus in our hearts, held in clay jars: “For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.” (2 Corinthians 4: 6-7, NRSV). In a lot of ways, it’s the same idea as Cohen. Clay is brittle and easily broken. So are we. Rather than being perfect, maybe embracing the flaws is the way to go. Chasing after an impossible dream, we miss today, and all its possibilities. Maybe, just maybe, it’s through our flaws and our broken bits, that our real beauty lies and God finds a way of speaking to us, and using us?

Longing for perfection is a bit of a human flaw. And this time of year, more so than ever. For many, it’s a darkness that creeps over us...never being good enough, comparing ourselves to others, longing to be something more than we are. But into that darkness, I think God comes. Into our brokenness, Jesus shines a light: a beacon of hope and transformation. Sometimes it’s our very imperfections that gives God the room to move and show us his love and we find our own beauty. So, this new year, “Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack, a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in.” (Leonard Cohen, Anthem, 1992)

Reader, The Lord Jesus says to you, “I will give you rest”. Go to Him, He is a real person, a real living Saviour, a friend that will stick closer than a brother. Christ died for His enemies, not His friends. It was while we were yet sinners that He died for us. He paid the penalty for your sin on Calvary’s Cross and if you acknowledge that you are a sinner before God and receive Christ as your Saviour, you will have peace with God. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

The year ahead! Our small team of 4 based here in the Moray Firth, will no doubt have a busy year ahead.as usual. I should also give a mention to Susie, the springer spaniel, who I don’t think has been properly introduced. Many of you will have met her though, as she goes everywhere with us – mad as a box of frogs !

Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish ! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). Lets hope we get away without a repeat of last summer’s wash out. Autumn Months

Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include: Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, can cause devastation.

Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS

Weedkill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Recently, spring has been very late.

PARLIAMENT BLOG I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those, either from the communities and organisations or from the funding bodies for making the Funding Fayre I hosted last week such a great success. I would also like to extend thanks to the Highland Council who supported the event by providing a venue, to the local Tesco in the Community Team for providing refreshments and to my constituency office team who worked very hard to pull the event together. The purpose was to help community groups and third sector organisations to make contact with funding bodies. I am sure that many of the groups in attendance will use the information they gathered on the various funding opportunities to help take their community projects forward. We really don’t hear enough about all these people working away behind the scenes in our communities helping others out. Finally, a Merry Christmas to all and my very best wishes for 2018.

Drew Hendry MP The most telling comment that I have every heard about the purpose of education was from the great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats. He said that the aim is "not to fill a bucket but to light a fire." The aim is to inspire children about what might be not just in the career they choose - but also in the way they develop and use their learning in later life. What inspires me is the chance of driving forward Scotland in our economy our NHS our schools. To create more opportunities for young people so that more can stay live and work in their own part of Scotland. In my own role as MSP this year I hope to continue to work to see the new Justice Campus created, to see a good location identified and agreed for a new Prison replacing Porterfield, and to continue working with The Highland Council, in but a few years, to transform Inverness Castle into a major visitor attraction.

Fergus Ewing MSP

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself in my first blog since becoming an MSP for the Highlands and Islands. I grew up in Ullapool and worked in Inverness as a mental health pharmacist for 20 years before entering politics. I now live in Strathpeffer with my husband and three children. I’m keen for my children to have the opportunity to live and work here in future, so I have a vested interest in the Highlands and Islands flourishing! You can be sure that I will work hard for everyone in the region over the next five years. If I can be of any help, please contact my office in Dingwall on 01349 863888 or email me on maree.todd.msp@parliament.scot

Words by the Wayside “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice… (Exodus 5:2)

Reader, if you listen to yourself before God’s Word, you are but a guide unto your own destruction. Sin is a deliberate and determined independence from God, doing and saying that which is right in your own eyes. Sinner, come face to face with your sin. If you say you have no sin, you are only deceiving yourself. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He alone is the way, the truth and the life for you. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290
