All elections over now - at least until next year anyway! Whether the result went well for you personally or not I guess we should remember those countries that do not have the benefit of any elections at all or where elections are routinely rigged. We should spare a thought for all the political prisoners who are being held in places like Indonesia, Thailand, Tibet and North Korea to name just a few.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Travelling companions Some of the greatest joys of travelling are the people we meet on the journey. Of course we hear a lot about stranger danger and we do of course need to make sure we travel safely. Nevertheless whatever the means of transport the company in which we travel can make a long journey seem to pass in no time at all. Getting into conversation with previous strangers has led to life-long friendships in some cases. It can certainly lead to the broadening of our education and to a deeper understanding of life and human nature. In such encounters we sometimes discover answers to questions that have long puzzled us and deeply entrenched opinions have been challenged. We meet all kinds of people, optimists and pessimists, extrovert and introvert, dogmatic and open-minded. Maybe we have even been challenged to rethink the whole course of our own lives. The Bible tells us of many such journeys. For example, in the Book of
Acts 8:26-39 we read of an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. We are told that the man had travelled to Jerusalem to worship and was on his way home. He may have been a full proselyte - a Gentile who had completely embraced the Jewish religion of the time, had been circumcised and accepted all the Law of Moses; or he may have been a Gentile God-fearer who was not circumcised but subscribed to the one God and to some of the ceremonial requirements. In any event the man was deeply interested in the Scriptures and sitting in his chariot on the way home he is engrossed in reading the prophecy of Isaiah (Isaiah 53:7,8). At the same time something (an angel of the Lord) made Philip go south to the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So it was that Philip saw the chariot, and the Spirit told him to go and stay near it. A conversation started between Philip and the Ethiopian and Philip was invited to come up into the chariot. Together they spoke about the

Scripture the Ethiopian was reading and Philip was able to answer all the questions the other man had about it. In fact beginning with the very passage he was reading Philip told him the good news about Jesus. As is so often the case this journey and this meeting turned out to be no coincidence at all and indeed had been ordained by God. It proved to be such a life-changing meeting that the Ethiopian was baptised in the name of Jesus there and then. The two then parted as abruptly as they had met but things would never be the same again. Indeed the Ethiopian returned to his own country as a Christian and would be the cause of many others coming to know Jesus. What a journey! What a meeting! What a conversation! Could it happen to you or me?

“Hailed as the hottest new act on the UK Contemporary Country Music scene...” 8 awards in 3 years, the only act to perform at all three mega-successful Country2Country festivals at London’s O2 Arena and the first to sell out the Brooklyn Bowl (London), the multi-award winning duo ‘Raintown’ - from Glasgow - are fast gaining the reputation as one of the hottest Country acts in Europe. They are excited to be coming - with the full band and guests - to Nairn Community and Arts Centre on Saturday June 27th.. The recently married couple, Paul Bain and Claire McArthurBain, fuse their passion for Country Music with their eclectic musical influences and continue the tradition of exciting new music to emerge from Scotland. The couple said “Nairn will always hold a special place for us both. We know the live music fans in the area love a great night out and we cannot wait to bring our show to the fantastic Nairn Community & Arts Centre on June 27th.” “Dynamic”, “electric” and “mesmerising,” these are just some of the adjectives that have described Raintown’s live performances. It promises to be a great night. Tickets are available for £12, from the Ticket Hotline 01667 453 476. “…everyone’s talking about Raintown.” Baylen Leonard – BBC Radio 2 Country

Baked Pears with Cinnamon Served with a Crème Anglaise Sauce Serves 4 Ingredients Sauce: 2 egg yolks 60g/2oz sugar Vanilla pod (or vanilla essence) 250ml /1/2pt milk Lemon rind, finely grated, to decorate
Pears: 4 ripe pears 2 tbsp lemon juice 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 60g/2oz butter Method Pears:
Sauce:
Preheat the oven to 200oC. Core and peel the pears, then slice them in half lengthwise and brush all over with the lemon juice. Place the pears, cored side down, in a small non-stick roasting tin.
Bring the milk and vanilla pod to the boil, remove the pod, pour milk onto the egg yolks and sugar, stirring all the time.
Place the sugar, cinnamon and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has melted. Keep the heat low to stop too much water evaporating.
Continue cooking, without boiling, until the mixture coats the back of a spoon.
Spoon the mixture over the pears. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pears are tender and golden, occasionally spooning the sugar mixture over the fruit during the cooking time.
Return to the stove and cook, but do not boil.
To serve: Pour the sauce over the base of the warm dessert plate. Arrange two pear halves on the plate and decorate with grated lemon rind. Stuart Aitken, Head Chef, Eight Acres Hotel

Forres Highland Games 2015
Ken Davies - Chieftain 2015 The annual celebration of Scottish sport and entertainment that is Forres Highland Games, takes place at Grant Park on Saturday the 4th of July, with the Opening Ceremony commencing at 12.30 pm. The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain Mr Ken Davies, an Athletics Official of many years standing, who will welcome all the; spectators, athletes, dancers, pipers, cyclists and pipe bands, to what will be a colourful and competitive spectacle for all concerned. Over the years a number of famous and developing athletes have competed at Forres Highland Games, entertaining the crowds and displaying a high standard of competitive action. Local Highland Games such as Forres have been a nurturing ground for many young athletes throughout the years; with Jamie Bowie (Inverness Harriers), Rachael McKenzie (Inverness Harriers) and Mark Dry (Elgin AAC), who all proudly wore the Blue Scottish Vest at last year’s Commonwealth Games.
There will be an event packed Highland Dancing competition open to all ages, which is always extremely popular viewing with our overseas visitors, as will the solo piping competition. However, the highlight of the afternoon is the assembly of the Massed Pipe Bands. The first Saturday in July is synonymous with Forres Highland Games; however it would not be possible without the dedication of the Games committee, volunteer judges and many local businesses who have been outstanding supporters of this classical celebration of Scottish culture.
