Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Last autumn, two walkers ventured into the hills from the Cairngorm ski centre, heading for Scotland’s second-highest mountain, Ben Macdui. Without a map or a compass, they placed their trust in an app on a smartphone. After conditions became misty, the pair abandoned their ascent and attempted to return to their car. However, the mobile app proved useless and they soon found that they were lost. Meanwhile, weather conditions worsened and the wind began to gust over 100mph. Cairngorm Mountain Rescue were called out, but were unable to locate the missing adventurers. Although police could make contact with them from time to time by mobile phone, the description they gave of their surroundings sounded totally unfamiliar to the rescue team. The walkers remained in the hills overnight and thankfully were located alive and

well in the morning, but by an entirely different mountain rescue team! They were at Linn of Dee, 17 miles from their intended destination, having travelled in the opposite direction. Our human lives in many ways resemble the journey of the hillwalkers. We set out across the landscape of life with great confidence that we can reach one of life’s summits without too much difficulty. Then, when we fail to reach it, we are sure that our personal choice of guidance system will take us safely home. Instead, we may end up completely lost. Over the centuries, people have taught many means of spiritual navigation. Some think all must be equally good, and that a sincere trust in something is all that is needed. Yet the hillwalkers’ firm belief that their smartphone app could be relied upon did not help

them when it proved lacking. What if spiritual life echoes natural life, and, in fact, most guidance systems will lead us badly astray? Jesus was certainly not one of those who subscribed to the idea that all roads lead to God. He said: “‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Unlike the walkers’ app, spiritual claims cannot be put through a process of scientific testing. There is much to support the teachings of Jesus, but at some point one needs to take a step of faith. I can’t prove to you that they are true, but it must surely be worth taking the time to consider them. The stakes are too high to do otherwise. Owen Morris The Junction Church Inverness

Orienteering the family friendly sport With New Year resolutions long forgotten and Spring possibly just around the corner, are you looking for a realistic way to get the family more active? Then let me introduce you to the sport of orienteering. In its most basic form, it’s little more than a good old-fashioned treasure hunt. You have a map, with lots of clues and you have to find the ‘treasure’ – which in the case of orienteering is the next control point. For kids it’s absolutely brilliant. Shorter courses are sometimes only 1 – 2 km long and those who have found their running legs can sprint between controls. But littler legs can toddle between controls too – there are no speed limits. As the kids get older they gain confidence and begin tackling courses on their own. This is where the real fun starts! When you get a bunch of 8 year olds heading into the forest looking for controls, distraction is around every corner. There are dens that need to be built, dead frogs that need to be buried, trees that have to be climbed and wild bilberries that have to be picked. With the kids busy enjoy the forest, this is when the parents also get to have their own adventure too. An hour or more, running around a forest (or walking – no speed restrictions remember) is food for your soul and a balm for your senses. Fresh air, fitness and a bit of me-time thrown in, as well as a workout for your brain. I’m pretty sure orienteering should be available on prescription.
The next Moravian Orienteering event: Sunday, 3rd March at Darnaway, while Inverness Orienteering Club can be found at Abriachan on Sunday, 10th March. More details at www.moravianorienteering.org/ and www.invoc.org.uk.

Outfit Moray's Cairngorm to Coast (aka C2C) event is a 100km hike and bike challenge that takes place against the backdrop of the magnificent Cairngorm National Park and along the beautiful scenery of the Dava Way. It starts at the Cairngorm Ski Centre carpark and from there, participants hike or, for the first time this year, bike to Grantown on Spey. The route takes them from the Sugar Bowl, through Glenmore Forest to Glenmore Lodge, on towards Nethy Forest and Lyngarry towards Nethy Bridge. There they join the Speyside Way to the Force Development Training Centre. The Wych Elm
By Kay Featherstone, Catherine Allinson
By Tana French One night changes everything for Toby Hennessey. A brutal attack leaves him damaged and traumatised, unsure even of the person he used to be. He seeks refuge at his family's ancestral home, the Ivy House, filled with memories of wild-strawberry summers and teenage parties with his cousins. But not long after Toby's arrival, a discovery is made: a skull, tucked neatly inside the old wych elm in the garden. As detectives begin to close in, Toby is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about his family, his past, and himself.

The Wonky Donkey By Craig Smith
The book behind the YouTube sensation of a granny reading this story to her grandchild, viewed over 3 million times. Who ever heard of a spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky winky wonky donkey?
Grief. Anger. Joy. Fear. Distraction. Disgust. Hope. All emotions we expect to encounter over our lifetime. But what if this was every day? And what if your ability to manage them was the difference between life and death? For a doctor in Intensive Care this is part of the job. Fear in the eyes of a terminally ill patient who pleads with you to not let them die. Grief when you make a potentially fatal mistake. Disgust at caring for a convicted rapist. But there are also moments of joy, like the rare bright spots of lucidity for a dementia patient, or when the ward unexpectedly breaks into song.

We Must be Brave By Francesa Liardet Spanning the sweep of the twentieth century, We Must Be Brave is a luminous and profoundly moving novel about the people we rescue and the ways in which they rescue us back. December, 1940. As German bombs fall on Southampton, the city’s residents flee to the surrounding villages. In Upton village, amid the chaos, newly-married Ellen Parr finds a girl sleeping, unclaimed at the back of an empty bus. Little Pamela, it seems, is entirely alone. As the war rages on, love grows where it was least expected, surprising them all. But with the end of the fighting comes the realization that Pamela was never theirs to keep
Junior Fiction (Teenage)
This Lie Will Kill You By Chelsea Pitcher One year ago, there was a party. At the party, someone died. Five teens all played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth. But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize. Instead, they realise they've been lured together by a person bent on revenge who wants to finally unravel the truth about what actually happened that deadly night, one year ago.
Community Based Nature Projects The birds are in song, fresh green buds are appearing and all of the potential of spring is again awakening from winter’s hibernation. It’s the perfect time for us to re-connect with nature, and there is no better place to be than Nairn for the quality of our natural surroundings. As John Muir, the influential Scottish environmentalist wrote: “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilised people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity.” This is after all what brought me back to Nairn, my home town, where a stroll on the beach or a walk around the river is ‘being home’. And its not just the place, its the people that make the community. Returning, I have found old friends and new, and among them have found the kind of pride in Nairn that wants to improve our surroundings. Green Hive, Nairn’s environmental charity, embodies all of this, that Nairn’s natural environment is important the green spaces, the wildlife that live in our gardens, parks and links. More than this its a charity that gives everyone a chance to roll up their sleeves and contribute to nurturing and protecting our home growing fruit, planting, clearing litter, creating artworks, reducing the waste that threatens to overwhelm so many communities, not just our own. The Nairn Viewfield Community Orchard, now in its second spring is nurtured by Green Hive volunteers. Some view it as Louis McIntosh does, as “an extension
Poem by Julie Lawson of the Pen & I When Pen and I and Green Hive meet There’ll be a buzz about the street The words and lines will flow like honey Some green, some recycled, some wise, some funny With tales and songs to entertain Come celebrate our sweet domain
of our house, a place to come”. It’s a public space in the town with picnic benches and in time a free source of fresh fruit to those that care for it and for our wider community. This spring as we again begin to care for nature remember that nature can also help us to care for ourselves. John Muir’s belief in the healing powers of nature are backed by a vast and growing body of research showing that being in nature is linked to increased energy and a heightened sense of well-being. “Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energised is to connect with nature” Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. This feels intuitive right? With an abundance of beautiful spots around Nairn, we can really take pleasure in our home town and make the most of what nature has to offer our own well-being. The community orchard is a particularly good place for this, with it’s young trees and all of the growth that will take place there this year, it’s a lovely place to stop, sit and return to throughout the year. And even better when you join a group like Green Hive and meet new people who share your interest where you can nurture your natural environment, nurture yourself and nurture our home. Kirsty Ellen Nairn resident and Green Hive Development Officer
Join Green Hive by visiting our website greenhive.co.uk, dropping in to our hub space at the Link Studios, Grant Street, or find us on facebook @NairnsGreenHive. There will be a fundraising event at Nairn’s Little Theatre on Friday 29th March at 7.30pm, organised by the Pen & I, Nairn’s creative writing group, in support of Green Hive, including an evening of prose and poetry and a raffle. Tickets £8 available at the door.

February is the hardest month in the garden in some ways, and it can be difficult to be aware of the rumblings that are starting to happen in some of our plants and trees at the moment. In our ubiquitous Birch trees for example, the sap will be starting to rise in earnest any day. There are jobs to do in the garden this month to get everything ready for the spring, and it is always satisfying anyway to have a good pre-spring tidy up. With the lack of foliage on many shrubs, and other plants having died back for the winter, now is a great time to get really stuck into your flowerbeds getting debris, leaves and twigs tidied up. Be careful, however, of enthusiastic bulbs and herbaceous perennials, some of which are peaking above the surface already. Ornamental grasses need work at this time of year too. Deciduous grasses should be cut back, ready
26
Overgrown hedges can be renovated at this time of year as well. They will be clear of nesting birds at the moment and they will tolerate a hard cut, so if you need to do a major tidy or reduce the size of a hedge then now is the time. Be aware though that the likes of Cypress hedges, like Leylandii, will not re-grow if you cut past the green growth, so you need to be careful with them. Snowdrops are making an appearance right now, the last flowers of the winter. Snowdrop bulbs are really difficult to succeed with, so transplanting them ‘in the green’ is the best way to get them started. This means waiting until the flowers have gone over and then transplanting the individual plants. You can buy them like this, or perhaps a friendly neighbour might be kind enough to let you take some that you can then let naturalise in your own garden. Finally, lawn repairs are best carried out at this time of year. Re-cut the edges to flowerbeds and spike any boggy patches. If you spike patches in your lawn remember to brush in a sharp sand and top soil mixture. If you would like to see more of what I get up to, you can check out my website at www.angelhort.com

Top cleaning tips Ma k e d o o rm a ts welco min g Give them the toughest cleaning they can take. They’re your front line against tracked-in dirt—so keep them clean enough to function at peak efficiency.
Cl e a n c a rp e t s an d u ph olstery Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt, body oil, and germs will need a deep cleaning to get them ready for another year of wear. Place the legs of each piece back on top of small wax paper squares after shampooing. This will protect your carpet and keep the furniture legs from getting wet as the carpet dries. Open the windows to speed the drying process, which can take a day or more.
F i n i sh y o u r f loo rs To protect the floors in your kitchen from another year of wear and tear, wax or apply a sealer following label directions. The simplest method: Use a combination wash-and-wax floor cleaner. No-wax floors don’t need a polishing treatment, but an occasional makeover will keep them looking fresher and add a protective buffer that could help them last longer. Use a floor cleaner that cleans, shines, or both. If you have wood floors, move furniture and rugs aside, then apply a wood cleaner and either liquid or paste polish to clean and add a new wax coating.
Wa sh w a l l s, cabin ets, b aseb o ard s, and woodwork The walls may not look as if they need a bath—dust and soot fall to the floor, right? Most of it does, but just enough clings to vertical surfaces to warrant a seasonal or pre-holiday bath. Use a sponge and hand dishwashing detergent, washing the surface in sections. A sponge mop makes it easier to reach higher spots. Use two buckets: one for dishwashing detergent solution and another for wringing your sponge. Dry the walls and woodwork with a clean cloth.
Cl e a n c e i l i n g fix tu res Remove dust and dirt from ceiling fans and air-conditioner vents with a cloth and a vacuum with a soft nozzle attachment.
Clean your light fixtures A few minutes with a stepladder, all-purpose cleaner, a sponge, and a polish cloth will give new light to your life. If your home has skylights or tall ceilings, consider investing in a stepladder and extended-reach dust-and-dirt-removal tools, all of which are available at your local hardware store and at home supply stores.
Ch e c k y o u r c o ils You should clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint. Built-up dust can shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. To remove dust from coils attached to the hard-to-reach back side of the fridge, carefully pull the refrigerator out several feet and vacuum thoroughly; finish by sweeping or vacuuming the floor area you’ve revealed.

Spring Cleaning Use our house cleaning checklist to clean your home efficiently and thoroughly: Before you start going room to room, pause first to put on some great, lively music. That’s better. Now pick up clutter, and as you go, feel free to second-guess your belongings. The less you have, the less you have to put away, clean, and dust: scrutinise books, magazines, newspapers, dvds, furniture, toys the kids have outgrown, old computers you’ve outgrown, old clothes and shoes in the wardrobes…is it time to donate and recycle? Speaking of wardrobes, if you have any that you’re afraid to open, face your fears its time to minimise and organise. Dust (go left to right, top to bottom) with microfibre cloths. This will lower allergens and improve the air quality in your house. Dampened cloths tied to the ends of mops and brooms work great for removing cobwebs. For slatted blinds, use the string to close them one way and dust, then close them the other way and repeat…it’s effective and a lot more efficient than trying to do one slat at a time. Don’t forget to hit the tops of doors, light fixtures, picture frames and yes, each of your knick-knacks (keep them in display cases to reduce dusting work). For the face of framed photos, TV screens, and computer monitors, use glass cleaner on your cotton cloth or microfibre to avoid streaking. Vacuum. Make sure your bag/compartment isn’t already full, and use the right settings and attachments. Hit the floors in the whole house, and upholstered furniture. Be amazed at all those missing items (socks, your favorite pen) that you find under your couch cushions. Sweep/mop/treat floors. For mopping, start at the farthest corner of the room and move back toward the entrance. Rinse mop after completing each 4 x 4 foot area.
