Words by the Wayside “The Lord God of Israel was their inheritance” (Joshua 13:33)
Christian, worship and sin are incompatible. If we are taken up with our Saviour and His things, we will not be taken up with self, sin or the things of the world. Our passion for the Saviour will determine our lifestyles. What sort of lives are we living? What sort of ambassadorship are we fulfilling? Our Lord Jesus Christ must come first in our lives and ourselves second. God alone is our inheritance and the Lord’s portion is His people.

You may notice that the paper stock we are using this month is different from the normal. We are running a trial with new printers and new paper stock in an effort to keep costs down in the current climate of rising paper supply costs - due in part to adverse fluctuations in the exchange rate between the pound and the euro. We are hoping that one consequence of the change will be freeing up more pages for editorial in the future. We are also continuing our survey into what editorial people would prefer to read and you can join this survey by visiting www.spotlighton.co.uk and clicking on the survey button.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings 11th November 2018 will mark the centenary of the 1918 Armistice which ended the hostilities of the First World War. Even with no surviving combatants of that conflict alive today, it still is marked as the occasion we remember the sacrifices of that war and all wars since then. Every parish in Scotland still has war memorials to those who died then. Along with their names is usually a title like ‘Our Glorious Dead’ or ‘Their names liveth’. They may also have sentences like "Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?, or "Sing softly. Be still’. Rudyard Kipling was commissioned to write suitable epitaphs. Here are some of them: ‘They willingly left the unachieved purpose of their lives in order than all life should not be wrenched from its purpose’; ‘Let those who come after see to it that their names are not forgotten’ and ‘In record of their honour and our gratitude’. A memorial may also record thanks for those who survive, like ‘And in gratitude to God for their
90 comrades who returned home’. Bible verses are also often found on memorials, eg. ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit’ (Psalm, 34:18);’ Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong’ (1 Corinthians 16:13); ‘The name of the righteous is used in blessings’ (Proverbs 10:7); ‘Peace I leave with you’ (John 14:27) and especially ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends’ (John 15:13) The design of memorials is also symbolic of something lasting and worthy. They may be Christian crosses, military statues, obelisks, pillars, towers, wells, fountains, anchors, and urns. They are all signs of victory through costly sacrifice. It is good to see them well cared for, and visited annually at wreath laying services. I see from the list of Remembrance Day services and wreath laying ceremonies that there are 50 in Moray. There are seven locations I

am responsible for, ranging in size from the town event in Keith, attended by hundreds, down to the roadside memorial well and fountain at Grange, usually just attended by myself and one of the local councillors. All are ways of communities saying they remember their heritage. Usually the war memorial ceremonies precede or follow Remembrance Day church services to show the continuity between remembrance of the past and prayers for peace for the future. Most churches will have a memorial to those of their own congregation who gave their lives in times of war. This year this link will be especially reinforced by Sunday falling on the 11th November. We have a rich heritage of remembrance in our country. Let us keep that lamp burning brightly this year. Rev Alastair Gray Keith North, Newmill, Boharm and Rothiemay

Honey Caramel Slice This easy caramel slice recipe is ideal for having on hand for after-school snacks, when having a cup of tea, or even to take to work or bake sales. A winner in any situation!
Ingredients: BASE 200g butter
FILLING
310g plain flour
2 x 395g condensed milk
115g caster sugar
100g butter
2 egg yolks
115g honey
Method: 1. Heat oven to 180°c. Grease a 20cm x 50cm tin and line with greaseproof paper. 2. Make the base, in a food processor. Blitz all the ingredients, with the exception of the yolks, until it resembles a breadcrumb texture. Add yolks and a few teaspoons of cold water, if necessary, to form a dough.
3.
Take half the dough and press into the lined tin, wrap the remaining half and place it in the freezer. Bake for about 15 minutes until lightly golden.
4. Meanwhile in a heavy based pan, place the butter and condensed milk over a low heat until thickened. Take off the heat. Add the honey. Pour over base and allow to cool.
5.
Grate the dough from the freezer into a cold dish and sprinkle over the cooled caramel base, bake for around 30 minutes until golden.

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
Scarification – How Much Will it Cost ? It is the toughest job of the year, but it is the key thing to get done if you are serious about keeping on top of moss. You can do it yourself, if it is a small lawn this is feasible, and could be done with a spring rake. Or for a larger lawn you might consider hiring a machine for the day. I think the going rate is around £50 per day, plus £20 delivery and collection. Many of you will have done this yourself and will appreciate it is not a job for the faint hearted. We will have around 800 lawns to scarify over the next few months. We usually use 2 men plus machines and blowers. While a small lawn can often be done in a couple of hours, a larger lawn can be an all day affair, or even longer. I thought it would be worth putting out some typical prices we would charge:
scarifiing
Size
Price (incl VAT)

Medium

Large

Aerating (hollow-core tining) is a bit cheaper, largely because there is less to clear up, which is very heavy and time-consuming.
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per month, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. The Reckoning By John Grisham
Pete Banning was Clanton's favourite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbour, and a faithful member of the Methodist Church. By Belinda Bauer On a stifling summer's day, eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. Jack's in charge, she'd said. I won't be long. But she doesn't come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed for ever. Three years later, Jack is still in charge - of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they're alone in the house, and - quite suddenly - of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother‌

Hubert Horatio By Lauren Child
The Bobton-Trent seniors certainly know how to make the most of their extravagant wealth - socialising, doing things, buying things and generally being more than a little bit ... irresponsible. Luckily for them, their son Hubert Horatio is an exceptionally intelligent, talented and sensible child. Unluckily for Hubert, this tends to mean that a lot of his spare time is spent steering his rather unruly set of grown-ups out of trouble.
Words by the Wayside “...they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.” (Judges 2:19)
Reader, Sin grows by indulgence and spiritual fools find sin funny. But sin always pays wages. Sin is putting yourself first and God nowhere, and doing that which is right in your own eyes, being a lover of pleasure rather than a lover of God. Is that you? Have you any sorrow for your sins? Outside of you turning to God in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ His Son for salvation, you will have all eternity where your sins will make you sorry. God loves you and Christ died for you, reject the God of all comfort no more.
