SECURING POWER FOR THE CUP FINAL
collaborate with our customers to improve power supply quality and reliability. It’s a ‘winning’ solution which kept the stadium lights on and ensured a quality TV experience for the final match.”
Electrifying the world in a safe, smart and sustainable way, ABB Electrification is a global technology leader in electrical distribution and management from source to socket.
E nergy supplier Boğaziçi Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş (BEDAŞ), one of the largest electric power distribution companies in Turkey servicing over 5.3 million consumers on the European side of Istanbul, partnered with ABB to implement a digital solution to improve the stadium’s power network.

The custom-engineered solution which was used included the supply and programming of a digital protection and control system for the stadium’s substations.
The substations supplied power to everything in the stadium, from the floodlights to the food and beverage outlets, the officiating referee’s video assistant referee systems (VAR) as well as global broadcaster equipment covering the game.
ABB’s digital solution effectively helped BEDAŞ to identify any potential faults and rectify them before they could possibly disrupt the stadium’s power supply.
Orçun Öztürk, Operational Technologies
Manager of BEDAŞ explains: “This was a hugely important match for Turkey and Istanbul. It was our role to make sure that the power supply stayed on throughout the event, so that the game could be livestreamed to audiences all over the world while ensuring the fans at the stadium enjoyed a seamless experience.
“Any interruption to the power supply would have had widespread implications, so we asked
ABB to develop a solution which would identify any potential faults and resolve them before they become an issue.”
ABB delivered a bespoke grid automation system and a control and monitoring solution for the stadium before the match.
It was designed so that should a fault be detected in the main source, the new solution could quickly analyze the fault and switch the system to the alternative source before a power outage even occured.
The protection system, based on ABB’s Relion® protection and control relays and native IEC 61850 standard digital communication, provided protection and control, including fault location, isolation, and system restoration functions for optimal fault management to ensure high availability of the energy supply.
For added customer control and convenience, the solution also allowed BEDAŞ to connect to its Remote-Control Center at its headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey.
“We have been partnering with BEDAŞ for more 10 years, helping them to bring a more resilient and reliable power supply to over 5 million people in Turkey”, explained Luigi Traino, Global Product Line Manager, Digital Systems at ABB.
“This digital systems solution for the Atatürk Olympic Stadium is another example of how
