GENSETS EMERGENCY GENSETS FOR ONE OF SCOTLAND’S MOST SUSTAINABLE RECYCLING PLANTS
GENESAL ENERGY has played a key role in the construction of one of the most modern and sustainable municipal waste treatment plants in Scotland – it transforms non-recyclable municipal waste into clean energy –with the help of a customised generator (GEN1500YC) set made by Genesal.
The ‘Black Start’ medium voltage generator powers a motor which turns the main turbine; this is used to start the turbine after a programmed shutdown. The generator is able to directly supply medium voltage power (11000V).
A company spokesman said: “The facility received a medium voltage generator set - a GEN1500YC - capable of powering the plant in an emergency and with the capacity to start the gas turbine at any time of the year.”
“Being a recycling plant located in Scotland, it was necessary to consider not only the typical technical peculiarities of such facilities, but also the climate. In this case, the plant is located on the country’s coast, in an area where rainfall is constant throughout the year (one of the highest in Europe) and the average temperature easily reaches zero ºC in winter.”
Genesal’s installation team put in a 3,000-litre fuel tank inside the container along with a leak sensor. The genset, powered by a 1500 RPM Baudouin engine, features a real-time consumption monitoring with medium voltage switchgear also located inside the container.
The genset control panel was installed in an indoor air conditioning room. The engineers put in air inlet and outlet attenuators to guarantee a noise level of 85 dBA@1m and there are motorised louvres to ensure air conditioning inside.
The 40HC stationary soundproof container has fire dampers, and the system has been manufactured with an intumescent panel to seal in case of fire.
There are also integrated fire protection system, including detectors, alarms, and CO2 discharge systems according to the British standard. A soundproof panel, with RF-60 specifications, guarantees the genset’s fire resistance.
There is an upper air inlet with water retention and decanting system for the genset’s air intake, maintaining a safe IP with the generator in operation. A drip tray inside the generator collects any liquid spill. Essential features are as follows:
- Prime Power: 1.365 kVA
- Standby Power: 1.500 kVA
- Voltage: 11.000 VCA.
- Frequency: 50 Hz
-RPM: 1500 RPM
-Engine: Baudouin
-Alternator: ECO 46HV-2L4A
Baudouin’s full range of PowerKit products spans 15 – 3125 kVA, one of the most comprehensive ranges available on the market today.
The engine manufacturer offers 100 Years of experience in design, manufacturing, support and quality, “With the PowerKit you can expect reliability, durability, excellent total cost of ownership and European quality from Baudouin PowerKit products, reports the company.
The set features an ECO 46HV2L4A alternator. The Self-regulatng alternatirs ECO43-46 MV-HV are brushless synchronous alternators used for providing electrical energy in the case of an emergency outage. They have a rotatng inducer with damping cage and statinary armature with skewed slits. The windings are short pitch in order to reduce the harminoc content. The alternators are manufactured in compliance with the directves in force and relative amendments. The electromagnetc compatability tests have been performed in the conditions prescribed by the regulations. The mechanical construction gives good access to the connections and allows easy inspection of the various components. The casing and shields are in steel. The shaft is in C45 steel with lock-set fan. The protection rating is IP23. Isolations are performed in class H with impregnation in epoxy resin and vacuum-treated high voltage parts, such as the stators (special treatments are available on request). The DER2 is a voltage regulator for synchronous alternators, set-up for operating and calibration in standalone mode. genesalenergy.com baudouin.com www.meccalte.com
Self-regulation is obtained through a digital electronic regulator that is fed by an auxiliary winding.
Mecc Alte says it guarantees an almost constant supply from the generator – under any possible operating condition.
A rotating inductor is fitted with a damper cage. The windings have a 2/3 pitch in order to reduce the harmonic content of voltage.
The entire series is manufactured according to, and complies with, the most common specifications such as CEI 2-3, IEC 34-1, EN 60034-1, VDE 0530, BS 4999-5000, CAN/ CSA-C22.2 No14-95- No100-95.
