In March 2023, the world’s largest storage battery facility (equipped with about 210,000 modules and 3.3 million cells), came online thanks to work by GS Yuasa.

This had been established for North Hokkaido Wind Energy Transmission Corporation, a corporation that is represented by Tomomi Yoshimura and has its head office in Wakkanai City, Hokkaido, Japan.

According to GS Yuasa this facility was ordered in 2018 and installed without incident over a 16-month period from July 2020 to November 2021. GS Yuasa reports that it is committed to the maintenance of this storage battery facility for the next 20 years.

The storage battery facility, with an output of 240 MW and a capacity of 720 MWh, is located at the Kita Toyotomi Substation of Northern Hokkaido Wind Power Transmission (Toyotomi-cho, Teshio-gun, Hokkaido).

Its role is to link in with wind power generation equipment and suppress output fluctuations caused by weather changes, contributing to the stabilisation of the system.

Equipped with industrial lithium-ion batteries manufactured by GS Yuasa the site makes an important contribution to the grid.

In addition, the STARELINK service, a storage battery maintenance service which uses GS Yuasa’s proprietary remote monitoring technology and predictive and forecasting technology, constantly monitors the voltage of all cells of lithium-ion batteries and performs fault surveillance, thereby ensuring a high level of safety.

In case of a failure, the site relies on a nationwide service network, one of the largest in the industry, to respond to customer requests.

A spokesman for GS Yuasa comments: “We will continue to contribute to the stabilization of electric power by expanding sales of lithium-ion battery storage facilities. In addition, by taking charge of system co-ordination, we will contribute to the further introduction of renewable energies toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.”

Features of this storage lithium-ion battery facilities are as follows:

* Equipped with all-cell voltage monitoring and all-module temperature monitoring for a high level of safety

* Ensuring downsized and long-life storage battery facilities

* Capable of performing optimum SOC management, which is important for fluctuation absorbing operation. [SOC: State of Charge. The percentage of residual capacity when the full charge state is 100%].

* Achieving power savings for air conditioners by reducing heat generated by charging and discharging

* Realizing a reduced failure rate and a significant reduction in the number of replacements parts by adopting a module structure without cooling fans www.gs-yuasa.eu

* Provided with a cubicle which is in compliance with fire prevention ordinances.

At the forefront of lead acid battery technology since the early part of the 20th century, GS Yuasa says it embraces new developments, applying research and investing in modern production plants to meet the increasing demands of a power-hungry world.

GS Yuasa is a market leader in the UK for Automotive Aftermarket, Industrial and Motorcycle Batteries. GS Yuasa batteries are available worldwide through a global network of GS Yuasa companies and appointed distributors.
