Rolls-Royce/mtu has supplied 68 battery units with an output of 30 megawatts and a storage capacity of 63 megawatt hours to an independent power-producing company at Vlissingen, The Netherlands.

Almost 100 battery racks with the mtu Energy Pack QG have already been installed in Vlissingen for the Dutch company SemperPower BV, and more will be added soon, reports the company.

In total the large-scale battery storage system will consist of 168 battery units with an output of 30 megawatts and a storage capacity of 63 megawatt hours.

The system will be put into operation starting in September 2023. The storage system will be used for grid frequency regulation in the Netherlands and will thus serve to integrate electricity from renewable energy sources into the public grid.

“We see it as our task to accelerate the energy transition. We do this by using energy storage systems that store sustainable energy in times of surplus and release it when the market needs it. We are delighted

The mtu EnergyPack QG from RollsRoyce/mtu is said to be ‘the ideal battery energy storage system for integrating high shares of renewable energy into the electric power grid.’ mtu EnergyPack QG’s modular design enables easy scalability, making it an ideal choice for integrating into energy systems of any size, says Rolls-Royce.

With a storage capacity ranging from 8.9 MWh to over 100 MWh, mtu EnergyPack QG has been optimised for front-of-the-meter utility scale projects, as well as large commercial and industrial applications.

A company spokesman commented: “The system is reliable and prevents unexpected shutdowns due to volatile energy supply or grid congestion caused by high power demand.

“It can store excess energy from renewable sources during production peaks and discharge it during periods of high demand with mtu EnergyPack QG. This maximises revenue and reduces costs by capitalising on energy trading opportunities.” www.mtu-solutions.com

The integration of a high level of solar and wind renewables in power systems can be achieved effectively with the help of the mtu EnergyPack QG, which comprises five essential components: battery rack, a power conversion system (PCS), a medium voltage skid, an auxiliary power transformer with subdistribution cabinet, and the mtu EnergetIQ Asset Controller.

The mtu EnergyPack QG is a battery energy storage system that can be scaled infinitely to fulfill specific project needs, rendering it an optimal choice for large-scale grid applications.

According to the manufacturer the QG system is designed to handle demanding applications with its strong and durable industrial design. It can be easily customised to meet the operational needs of users and can be augmented over time to increase asset value in a costeffective manner.

*The mtu EnergyPack can store excess energy from various sources for later use, such as peak shaving and load shifting.

* When combined with mtu EnergetIQ, the system can participate in higher-level electricity markets for potential revenue generation in dayahead trading, real-time or intraday trading, and ancillary services.

* The solution supports the grid and maintains an continuous balance between load and generation, stabilising the frequency of the grid (ancillary services).

* The power electronics in the mtu EnergyPack help regulate the voltage of the grid and manage reactive power circulating in the grid.

* By combining the above functionalities, the system can integrate large amounts of renewable energy, reduce the cost of conventional energy generation & provide reliable power in on-grid applications.

* The high capacity of grid-scale energy storage solutions can defer or eliminate the need to upgrade grid infrastructure, enabling better management of grid congestion.

* mtu EnergyPack QG include168 battery racks, DC/AC inverters, transformers 690 V / 11 KV, mtu EnergetIQ Manager. EPC: construction, grid connection building, site facilities, road, fencing, and civil works including: logistics, project management, quality control and HSE supervision. Mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning and testing.
