"Our summer social media campaign offers tips that enable owners to be confident they are ensuring the safety of their beloved pets without compromising on their fun."

When the summer sun arrives and we start to move outside, the seasonal hazards to our pets might begin to feel like a thing of the past. However, it is important to remember that hazards crop up throughout the year. Summer activities, from swimming in the rivers to sunbathing in the garden can all pose potential risks that require us, as owners, to watch out for. The advice and guidance offered by your veterinary team can be a useful tool in feeling prepared to navigate the summer months safely, without missing out on summer fun. At Garden Veterinary Group, we aim to provide a safety net of advice to our clients to ensure informed fun is had by all. A hazard well known by most is the temperatures of pavements leading to burnt paws! Did you know paws can be just as sensitive as human

feet? A good rule of thumb to remember is if it’s too hot for your feet, it’s too hot for theirs. Why not try out the seven second rule if you're unsure – place the back of your hand to the surface for seven seconds. If you're unable to do it, then it's too hot for your pet!

Knowing the dangers of overheating to our pets, we often try to find fun solutions to this. Swimming in lakes and ponds can often be a fun pastime for our pets, but this too poses a potential danger. Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria that can be found in non-moving waters. When clumped together, these

bacteria can give the appearance of greenish scum on the water surface. Sadly, these bacteria produce toxins that can harm the livers of pets.

Our summer social media campaign offers tips that enable owners to be confident they are ensuring the safety of their beloved pets without compromising on their fun. We will be sharing more information surrounding the two topics above and ways we can avoid the dangers of other summer hazards. Summer fun and summer safety can go hand in hand, let us show you how.
