WELCOME HOME! The search for home is intrinsic to the history and sub-culture of the LGBT community. Looking for that place that protects, nurtures, and celebrates us is a continuing struggle and point of strength which unites us. Our films reflect that search. As you read these words, know you are home, and we are so glad you are here. For these eleven days at the end of April we celebrate a bumper crop of exceptional LGBT film. Red Hot HighlightsOpening Night on Thursday (New Night, Old Home: The Colony Theatre in South Beach): We “KickOff”, also the title of the Fresh British comedy that redefines the gay sports film genre. The British invasion continues through the festival with must see films such as, “The Night Watch” and “The Weekend” just to name a couple. Brazil turns in what may be the sleeper hit, “So Hard To Forget” and Spain turns up the heat with “Room In Rome.” To add to the excitement we will have a Sneak Peek that is so top secret we can’t tell you the name of the film. All we can say is, “Take a peek, and be amazed!” For Closing Night, we bring the excitement to a close with the world premier of: “Going Down in La La Land.” Each year we seek to bring the very best LGBT films in the world to the Miami festival. This year, that quest is no different, but the global financial realities are not the same. To maintain our world class LGBT film festival standard of excellence, we cut operating expenses across the board, with the exception of our programming budget. We are proud that festival ticket prices reflect only modest increases, ensuring that your film festival remains accessible to everyone in the community. 4 | MGLFF 2011
Our ability to thrive and remain committed to excellence is due in large part to the stalwart members of our Producer’s Circle. We also appreciate the loyalty of our corporate sponsors, with special acknowledgement to Presenting Sponsors Miami Dade County and HBO. The film festival would not be this premier cultural arts event without our dedicated volunteers and membership. We applaud you!! Thanks for keeping the light on for us, at home.

SCREENING COMMITTEE Victor M. Gimenez: One of life’s greatest pleasures for me is going to the movies on opening weekend—sitting in the dark with my partner at my side, sharing a soda, eating Sno-Caps, feeling the communal spirit as everyone laughs or cries or jumps or gets lost in what is up on the big screen. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a loud, noisy summer blockbuster or a small character piece; as long as the movie is well written and made, I am happy. Victor Gimenez

Hello my name is lesbian is a great documentary about the old and new lesbian ways of life in Denmark. This documentary has spectacular clips from the olden days and amazing stories from today. This is a great movie for all ages. It is subtitled from Danish to English.
Highlighting key events of GLBT history as told by the founder of International Mr. Leather and past IML winners, this film tracks the 2008 IML leather contest held in Chicago. It weaves snippets of legend, shots of past IML weekends, clips of seminars, crowd shots and emotions from contestants and spectators. It uses “kink” as an undefined term lumping together any sex other than the missionary position. On the edge, it also fairly portrays participants and attendees as “normal” GLBT people simply enjoying life. It’s BIG SCREEN entertainment and education rolled into one film!!

Sex in an Epidemic
Sun. 4/24, 3:00 PM | Regal 11 Director: Andrew Davies Germany 2010 - 95 min. | Gay
Mon. 4/25, 9:00 PM | Regal 11 Director: Jean Carlomusto USA 2010 - 61 min. Gay, Community
Rock Hudson was one of Hollywood’s manliest leading men caught between his two worlds of heterosexual Hollywood and the darker side of his life as a gay man. This documentary film shares with us candid interviews, historical footage of his career and his importance of becoming the face of AIDS when he publicly admitted to having contracted the disease. Don’t miss this tribute to a man who ultimately changed the lives of many.
By focusing specifically on the need for honest comprehensive sex education, this engaging documentary provides a sociocultural perspective on the history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its ongoing impact on the most effected populations. The film reminds us that, though the world has been living with the realities of HIV/AIDS for nearly 30 years, ignorance and prejudice about the disease must still be combated. MGLFF 2011 | 33
