WELCOME Dear Film Family, We are thrilled to welcome you to the 14th Annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. We are very excited to present our current festival edition containing over 65 films with over 15 countries represented. Our core mission to ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE, AND INSPIRE is accomplished with films such as Kawa, Wish Me Away, Vito, Unfit, Mosquita y Mari, Naked As We Came (a work in progress), Girl Trash: All Night Long (a work in progress), Elliot Loves, and North Sea Texas. Please visit us at www.MGLFF.com to see our new website and view trailers for most of our feature presentations. A new aspect to the film program is that a short film will precede most feature films. Shorts films are important since they serve as testing grounds for many films that become full-length features of the future. We hope you enjoy these special gems!

As the first MAJOR LGBT film festival to occur in the calendar year, we have garnered national and international attention as a springboard for the best of this seasons’ crop of LGBT cinema. In these 10 days, Miami shines as a city that welcomes the arts! In order to shine, we have comprised a team that has put their hearts and souls into creating the best MGLFF experience. That team starts with our dedicated Board of Directors and Staff, to our production partners, and our very loyal volunteers. Thank you for your time, talent and generosity! We hope that as you skim through the pages of the program, you will find films that will ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE, and INSPIRE you! We also ask that you please take note of our sponsors and please show them similar support . Best regards, Franc Castro, Executive Director On behalf of the Board, Staff, and Volunteers

IMAGE ARTWORK Title: Proud, looking to the future Technique: oil / canvas Dimensions: 150 x 100 cm. Year: 2011

Mexican Artist Luis Selem was chosen to create the official image for the 2012 MGLFF. In his work he mixes universal themes and issues with his own personal world view as a contemporary creative. Through his art, he depicts the human figure and his most intimate thoughts and desires. He has participated in over 50 group exhibitions and several solo exhibitions in major cultural centers of Mexico, the United States, and in several South American countries. His most important exhibitions have been organized by Alfredo Ginocchio Gallery of Mexico City. Luis’ statement about the piece created for the 2012 MGLFF: “The work is inspired in me, in my environment, in my way of dress and my outlook on life, always forward, always looking towards the future, but taking with me the essence of my being. This is why this particular body area was chosen, the posterior, so that the viewer of the work also looks ahead to where the character sees, and accompanies him on that vision. The subject’s gender was omitted. It may be a man or a woman, giving an aspect of mystery while at the same time allowing anyone to identify with the character.” MGLFF 2012 |

Pim lives with his ex-beauty queen single mother in a small town on the Belgian coast. As a teenager, he grows infatuated with Gino, the boy next door, and his motorcycling hero. His first love seems destined to end in disappointment. When Zoltan, a hunky young man from the fun-fair starts dating Pim’s mother, he seizes the opportunity to leave and moves in with Gino’s family, but alas, Gino is romancing and living with a girl from across the border. It seems Pim’s dreams will never come true, but then one rainy day Gino returns home.

A feature length short film compilation that portrays 15 people living with HIV/AIDS from the San Francisco Bay Area. 16 well-known local filmmakers collaborated with 15 protagonists to create 15 pieces that run from verite doc, experimental film, dance video and spoken words. This film weaves a diverse slate of stories into one powerful AIDs video quilt of our times.

Marshall is turning 30 and is desperate for a new life. He downloads an app called “eCupid” that guarantees true love, and immediately sabotages his 7-year relationship. Suddenly single, “eCupid” overwhelms Marshall with sexy guys and quickly becomes more than he bargained for. With the help of a wise and mysterious waitress, Marshall is given one last chance to figure out who and what is really important.

In the summer of 2005 a 16-year-old in Memphis, Tennessee wrote on his MySpace blog about his parents sending him to a correctional “Fundamentalist Christian” program that strives to turn gay teens straight. This documentary follows the inspirational story of this teen’s local community standing up for their friend with daily protests at the facility, in what would become an international news story. The documentary features several former clients of the organization who tell their personal stories about the time they spent within the program’s walls. MGLFF 2012 |

LAVENDER

HEART

AWARD HONORING CHELY WRIGHT The Lavender Heart Award is an annual honor recognizing an individual in the Arts and Entertainment industry who has gone above and beyond in promoting a positive image of the LGBT community. This year’s award is presented to Chely Wright one of Country Music’s Top Female Vocalist and one of People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.” Upon the release of her 2010 album, “Lifted Off the Ground”, and her memoir, “Like Me”, the award-winning country artist and songwriter stunned the conservative country music world by becoming the first major country music performer to publicly come out as gay. Wright has cited among her reasons for coming out a concern with bullying and hate crimes toward LGBT people, particularly LGBT youth, and the damage to her life caused by “hiding.”

rise to fame while being a closeted lesbian. In the midst of a tumultuous political climate that has incited polarizing debates about civil rights, the film documentary “Wish Me Away” was released featuring both the public and very private moments of Chely’s life as she bravely chose to risk all that was important to her – family, relationships, career, success, fans and image - to live her authentic life. As an LGBT role model, Chely serves as the national spokesperson for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and speaks out against school bullying. Wright believes “that to whom much is given, much is required. I have lived a very blessed life and I know what it feels like to achieve goals. I want to do my part in helping others have as many opportunities to have milestones in their lives too.”

ANGEL

AWARD HONORING MARK GILBERT The Angel Award is an annual honor recognizing an individual who has made an unwavering contribution to the film festival and to the LGBT community. This year’s award is honoring Mark Gilbert, A.K.A. “MarkyG,“ for his numerous years of outstanding service given to the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival as a Board Member, and the overall South Florida LGBT Community. As a South Florida Radio Personality, MarkyG burst onto the “Gay Scene” in 2002. After a divorce and a realization that he was never going back to a straight life he decided to change his volunteer efforts to focus more on the Gay community. His first choice was the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival because he loved the films, events, and the incredible people involved with the festival. Marky attended the festival in 2001

and joined the Board in 2002. Gilbert served on the MGLFF board of directors for seven years and hosted radio shows like “South Beach Dance Party” on Y-100 and “Issues over the Rainbow,” an LGBT radio show on the New Party 93.1 for more than four years. He is currently heavily involved in local LGBT non-profit organizations such as the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and acts as the EMCEE of the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade each year. Marky states, “anyone that says we have no community or I am not into the Gay Scene has no clue what incredible organizations we have serving us and what dynamic people we have running them. I am so proud to be part of our incredible South Florida Gay Scene”.

MADE IN

MIAMI UNFIT WARD VS. WARD

The “Made in Miami” program highlights films that are either made in Miami or made by Miami’s emerging talents. These films are featured at a special event during the film festival and promote pride in Miami’s cultural arts scene. “Made in Miami” is part of the MGLFF’s commitment to support local filmmakers & further position Miami as a filming destination. This year’s Made in Miami film selection, UNFIT: Ward vs. Ward, was a result of Executive Producer’s Katie Carmichael & Edwin Scharlau hearing Mary Ward’s story and knowing they had to do something. They couldn’t foresee the journey it would take them on, but they knew that this was a story that needed to be told. This story was so shocking that it almost didn’t seem real, yet sadly it was.

In 1995, a Florida judge concluded a girl’s father, a convicted killer, was better fit to raise her than was her mother, because her mother is a lesbian. This project was started with the most noble of intentions– to give a voice to an injustice and allow a broader audience to hear about what happened that tragic August day when a Florida judge said “...l believe that this child should be given the opportunity and the option to live in a non-lesbian world…”. Katie and Edwin conclude “We can only hope that UNFIT: Ward vs. Ward, will open the dialogue with a broader audience and ultimately bring justice to a completely unfair judge’s decision that had lasting and terrible consequences on a family.” MGLFF 2012 |

SAVING

OUR

STORIES

(S.O.S.) The “Saving Our Stories (S.O.S.)” program is a planned series of short films that will be produced as a result of a call for short documentary scripts from the local community that highlight South Florida LGBT youth & seniors’ stories. These stories will be taken through the entire filmmaking process with the help of production partners and will be presented at next year’s festival. These films will be housed at the film festival’s office as part of a video archive of local LGBT experiences, saving our community’ s stories and experiences for future generations. Make this program a reality by donating now at MGLFF.com under the donations tab. MGLFF 2012 |
