Huppert will be honored on Friday, March 16 at the Olympia Theater. The Festival will present its Precious Gem – Master Award to Carlos Saura, Spain's greatest living filmmaker, on the occasion of a new documentary about the master's career and family life, Félix Viscarret's Goya-lauded Saura(s), on Sunday, March 11 at the Olympia Theater. Jaie Laplante explained that "Carlos Saura returns to Miami after receiving the Festival's Career Achievement Tribute Award at our 20th edition in 2003. At that time, he was 71. Now, he's 86 and has made eight more brilliant films since his last visit to Miami – but with Saura(s), we see him in a new light, as both a filmmaker and a family-maker. He is a peerless master, and we celebrate the life that continues to nourish his art." he 26th Annual Florida Renaissance Festival is in full swing and a great time is being had by all who join in the festivities. Through March 25, you and your friends can travel back in time to the 16th Century with over 100 very talented performers ready to entertain you throughout your visit, tons of artisans selling their wares, a Kid's Kingdom, and plenty of entertainment and food and drynk fit for a king or queen. The Florida Renaissance Festival is a very popular, fun event for all ages. Wire Magazine sat down with Entertainment Director Richard Weber, who is also the Lord Mayor of the Village and a proud member of the LGBTQ community, to learn more about this year's Festival.

Rafa Carvajal: What is your role with the Florida Renaissance Festival? Richard Weber: I've played the Lord Mayor of the Village for 18 years and I've been the entertainment director for 15 years. RC: What new additions can we look forward to this year? RW: There is always a thrilling mix of returning favorites, plus new acts and attractions. Two wonderful variety acts and fan favorites who haven't been here in a couple of seasons, Broon and Kamikaze Fireflies, both return for the 2018 full season. New this year, we have a swimming mermaid exhibit provided by Blue Mermaid Designs, and a new pirate area called Tortuga Bay. In the Jousting Arena Forecourt we have a new aerial act, "Cirqa Brava," featuring gymnastic aerialists performing on flying silks supported by a 30' high rig. Also in this same area of the festival, we host "Lady Ophelia's Dance Party." Flirt the renaissance way by learning the latest country and court dances, and engaging with your fellow faire guests in dance. We are also very pleased to announce the engagement of a spectacular international musical group called Stary Olsa. These are six versatile musicians playing authentic renaissance instruments that have come from Belarus and have included the Florida Renaissance Festival as a part of their American tour schedule. We present musicians and unique variety artists with international reputations, and a marketplace community of artists unparalleled in skill and expression. 

RC: Tell us about this year's themed weekends. Which is your favorite? RW: The themed upcoming weekends are: Wenches Weekend, March 3-4; International Weekend, March 10-11; Celtic, March 17-18; and Witches, Wizards & Magic, March 24-25. We also had these themes in previous weekends this year: Pirates, February 10-11; Time Traveler's – Steampunk, February 17-19; and Viking, February 24-25. For each of the themed weekends, we hold a special event or contest to support the theme and give the audience something special that occurs only during that weekend. We feature different variety acts and musicians that present something special in support of the themes. We also partner with specialty acts and outside events to present unique entertainment. For example, to celebrate Time Traveler's Weekend, we partnered with Florida Supercon to host a futuristic fashion show and costume contest. For Viking Weekend, we presented our first-ever Beard and Moustache contest. Wenches Weekend is always a particularly fun time with our bodice and cleavage contest. It's just good-natured fun and a perpetual crowd favorite. Another fan favorite event occurs on our Celtic Weekend when we host our Men-in-Kilts and Highland Hunk contest. We always offer something for the ladies as well as something for the gentlemen. We have two new themes for this season's festival. International Weekend, where we encourage our guests and participants both to dress in whatever cultural wardrobe best represents the international flavor of the renaissance, and Witches, Wizards & Magic Weekend, where we celebrate the fantasy world of fairies, spirits and Harry Potter. Every day there is something different and every festival day is magical. RC: Tell us about the work that goes into producing the Florida Renaissance Festival. RW: Producing and preparing for the annual festival is a full-time, year-round endeavor. As soon as the show opens, we start planning the next season. There are permits and licensing agreements, legalities, cross-promotions, sponsorships and educational programs to update and develop. There are variety acts, musicians and actors to audition, negotiate, contract and train, scripts and music to be written, policies to establish and living history encampments to enhance and assist. There are outreach programs to oversee, conventions to attend and state and local committees to involve. Artists and fine craftsmen present products to jury into the show and meetings are held to discuss the balance of the event with regards to products and entertainments. Phone calls, emails and every form of communication from electronic to smoke signals and carrier pigeons are involved year round to create the immersive experience that is the modern Renaissance Festival.
RC: Describe the Florida Renaissance Festival in three words. RW: Unique, entertaining and memorable. RC: What do you consider the most distinct qualities of Florida Renaissance Festival? RW: 
I consider this entire industry a remarkable cultural phenomenon. Unlike most other forms of entertainment where there is a clear division between artist and audience, the modern Renaissance Festival breaks down these barriers and you get the opportunity to directly engage with living characters in an immersive environment. We now live in an age where few people feel comfortable speaking with strangers. The Renaissance Festival works very hard to create a safe, community oriented, village feel‌ a place where you can hold long involved conversations with individuals outside of your normal expectations and experience. This is a place where every person you encounter is seriously dedicated to your well being and happiness, a place where there are no strangers, only friends; a place where we see each guest as the amazing, wonderful, loving and miraculous individual we know they are. We create a playground where kindness is the norm, laughter is the currency and where every guest leaves with a sincere wish for their health and happiness. Our purpose is to create memories of loving wonderment that will last a lifetime. We take this intent as our guiding light. #09 2018 WIREMAG.COM 9
RC: Why should Wire Magazine readers attend the Florida Renaissance Festival? RW: Short answer: Everyone should attend the Florida Renaissance Festival. Long answer: Alternate entertainments have a long tradition within the gay community. In a world where we have struggled long and hard for public acknowledgement, and the basic human dignity of being allowed to express ourselves and live truthful authentic lives, the Renaissance Festival phenomenon has always encouraged guests and patrons to dress up and live both the fantasy and the reality of our innermost spirits. For decades, festivals of this nature have always been a safe space to publicly express yourself. Sometimes it takes a historical perspective to remind modern audiences that the concept of family and community has less to do with those with whom we share blood, but rather it is better defined by those for whom we would give our blood. Within a renaissance festival village, we are less tribal and more inclusive than is generally experienced in other public forums. RC: What are your top 3 favorite costumes that you've spotted at the Festival? RW: Oh lord, where to start? Top 3? Every lady who puts on her first corset and long skirt which transforms her image of herself and who finally sees herself as the most exotic woman in the world. Every person who comes dressed to the festival expressing some hidden aspect of their own personality. Every guest who decides to become someone different, playful and free. Favorites? The fairies with 8-foot wingspans and amazing peripheral vision. The Klingons and Star Wars Stormtroopers who invade every Time Traveler's Weekend, generally with all 13 flavors of Doctor Who. The bodybuilder in his late 50's wearing a whisper of leather and a "come hither" smile, as proud in his display as a peacock. And every child, every princess, knight and wizard who still knows what it is to play and who insist that their parents remember to play as well. 
 RC: Where do you see the Festival in 5 years? RW: Bigger, grander and happier.

Whether it's tribal, house, tech, pop or anything in between, every mixer has his own unique style that pushes our buttons and gets us out on the dance floor till the sun goes down (or comes up). Here are the top 10 remixes that got me moving at the moment. Party safe! "Ain't No Mountain" (Country Club Martini Crew) - Diana Ross Like a fine wine, Miss Diana Ross just gets better with age. Originally released by Marvin Gaye in 1967, Ross covered it just two years later, which earned her a Grammy nomination. Nearly half a century later, the original Supreme is reviving this iconic anthem with the help of DJs like Eric Kupper, StoneBridge, Chris Cox and, of course, these guys. 12 WIREMAG.COM #09 2018
"How Long" (Devolve Remix) - Charlie Puth I'm absolutely obsessed with this man and this track! And nothing gets me more excited than hearing my favorite songs reimagined in a completely different way. While the original version is absolutely flawless, this dancehall rendition is perfect for those times when you just wanna grind it out on the dance floor. "I Am House" (Jacob Colon Mix) - Sted-E & Hybrid Heights (ft. Crystal Waters) The unstoppable Crystal Waters refuses to leave the dance floor alone and we are forever grateful for it! This time around Sted-E & Hybrid Heights have set the stage for our favorite "Gypsy Woman" to do what she does best – make us dance. Jacob Colon adds some extra drama on the remix, but it's Crystal's vocals that make it 100% pure house. "IDGAF" (Kay Stafford at the Ibiza Beach Club Remix) - Dua Lipa Our favorite "New Rule" maker is back, but this time she's in control and doesn't give a f*ck. Her latest mantra is for any man, woman or unicorn who has ever been wronged. So that's basically everybody. Kay Stafford takes it up a notch by keeping in all the best parts and adding a little extra kick drum for the clubs.

"Sensational" (Zonderling Remix) - Sam Feldt In 1980, the legendary Loleatta Holloway unleashed a funky track called "Love Sensation." Over the decades that followed it was sampled on almost 30 different songs including "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch, and Black Box's "Ride On Time." This time DJ/ producer Sam Feldt gives us his fresh new take on this iconic classic off his album, Sunrise To Sunset. While Feldt's original version is heavy on the horns, this remix strips it down to its essence and makes it sweeter for the senses. "Strangers" (TIEKS Remix) Sigrid Your mama always said never to talk to strangers, but where's the fun in that? Emerging singersongwriter Sigrid gets a sweet club makeover that's ideal for rubbing up against that perfect stranger on the dance floor at your next pride or Winter Party. "This Is Me" (Dave Aude Remix) - Keala Settle You probably wouldn't expect a theme song from a big screen musical to be on this list, but Dave Aude gives this track from the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman his signature club treatment, making it worthy of any LGBTQ festivities for years to come.
"Too Many Friends" (Parx Remix) - Hearts & Colors You can never have too many friends, and you don't always need a wailing diva on your track to make it amazing. The understated vocals from this Swedish duo made up of Philip Tillström and Nicolai Kjellberg deliver just enough drama on this minimal electro-house remix.

"Up All Night" (Nathan Jain Remix) - Beck Yet another surprise entry here – even for me – is one-time '90s "Loser" Beck. No, he's not a dance artist now, but sometimes the difference between a good pop-rock song and a club anthem is a fierce baseline and a little piano house. Remixer Nathan Jain blends the two genres flawlessly, giving us not only a hot dance track, but a great #goal. "You're Good For Me" (Tony Moran + Bissen Original House Remix) - Tony Moran ft Kimberly Davis No LGBTQ dance party would be complete without a little bit of Tony Moran thrown in the mix. The two-time Grammy-nominated DJ/ producer left his Latin Rascal days behind decades ago, but he never stops delivering the best music to dance floors around the world. His latest is no exception and is sure to make a much-needed appearance this festival season.

or 35 years, Miami Dade College's renowned Miami Film Festival has been bringing the best of international filmmaking to South Florida audiences, and to visitors who come to our Magic City for this annual cinematic extravaganza. This year is no exception. The 35th edition of the Miami Film Festival, taking place March 9-18, will present 148 feature narratives, documentaries and short films of all genres, from 50 different countries. Three new countries, Benin, Georgia and Swaziland, are going to be represented in the Festival's Official Selection for the first time, and 38 of the films are directed or co-directed by women filmmakers. The Opening Night film of the Festival will be the premiere of Tully, by four-time Oscar nominated writer, director and producer Jason Reitman, which is his newest collaboration with Oscar winners Charlize Theron and screenwriter Diablo Cody. The film will be followed by an Opening Night Gala Dinner at EAST, Miami, as well as a simultaneous Opening Night Party at the new Jungle Plaza in the Miami Design District. According to Miami Film Festival Director Jaie Laplante, "Charlize Theron's fearless performance as a struggling suburban mother on the brink of losing mental control is made possible by another brilliant collaboration by the creators of Juno and Young Adult. Tully is both a parable and a salve for our stressed-out times – it reminds us all of who we are, and there is no more beautiful way to open our 35th edition than with this film." The 35th edition Festival will conclude with an Awards Night Gala screening at the Olympia Theater of the International premiere of Curro Velázquez's smash hit Spanish comedy Holy Goalie (Que baje Dios y lo vea), with star Alain Hernández in attendance. For this year's annual Miami Film Festival special issue, Wire Magazine sat down with Jamal Sims, director of the documentary When The Beat Drops. We also spotlight 14 of the Festival's films. Director Jamal Sims is one of the film industry's most sought-after director-choreographers, whose credits include the hit stage musicals Footloose, Hairspray and Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour. When the Beat Drops is Sims' feature documentary debut, which will be premiering at the 2018 Miami Film Festival. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers what When The Beat Drops is about. Jamal Sims: When The Beat Drops is a glimpse into an underground subculture of black, gay men who have created a community built around their shared love of a dance style, most commonly performed by majorettes in southern black universities. Starting as early as the 1960s, the majorette teams that accompanied college marching bands consisted of females only. The male subjects in our film decided to adopt that dance style into their own, with all the dance theory of the majorette culture and even adopting their versions of the majorette uniforms to create their own culture of dance, which has remained predominantly underground with no visibility on a popular culture-level. RC: Why did you feel it was important to tell the story about the journey of five gay dancers in the scene through a documentary? JS: I felt like it was important because I can remember when I learned about these underground dance scenes. I thought some of the dances were created by these "pop stars" who had taken credit for them, and brought them into the mainstream. I soon learned through films like Paris is Burning that people have been doing these dances for many years prior to these "pop stars" making them pop culture. I wanted to give our subjects the first opportunity to tell their stories and introduce the world to the dance culture they created.
RC: How did you get involved in directing the film? JS: I was scouting for locations for a music video with my producer Jordan back in 2013, and he asked me what I wanted to direct next. I had been thinking about a trip I took to Atlanta when I was in my early 20's, as I was trying to reconcile my feelings about my own sexual identity. While in Atlanta, I encountered the boys who buck at an Atlanta pride event at Piedmont Park. The two teams were battling in an empty swimming pool and their fierce competition seemed to go on for hours. I was completely mesmerized by the depth of their choreography – they were relentlessly going back and forth, with no shortage of dance counts. The uniforms were also a component of the presentation that I could not forget. I told Jordan that I'd like to direct a documentary about the boys who buck and, one month later, we were in Atlanta working to identify the central figures in this subculture movement. Getting them to agree to work with us was another story altogether. RC: Why should Wire Magazine readers watch When The Beat Drops? JS: This film is important not only because of the subjects in the film, or the incredible dance scenes, but because it offers a look at a subculture we really don't see on a macro-level. Despite major traction in the progress for human rights of people in the LGBTQ community, this film illustrates what it means to be black and gay in the South. To be a part of the discriminated and at the same time celebrate dance, which I'm always here for! RC: What does it feel like to have your directorial debut as a world premiere at the Miami Film Festival? JS: It is a huge honor to have my film premiere at the Miami Film Festival. I feel like this festival really celebrates diversity. This may sound like I'm trying to score brownie points, but everyone knows that if you ask me what is my favorite city in the U.S. is, I will always say Miami! I love it for so many different reasons, and the art scene is at the top of the list. RC: Which has been your favorite project that you have ever worked on? JS: I would have to say it would be working on Disney's new live action film, Aladdin. We shot it last summer and it comes out in 2019. Working with Will Smith and the rest of the amazing cast was magical. RC: What are your favorite experiences/memories in Miami? JS: My favorite Miami experience was coming for my honeymoon. My husband Octavius and I share the same love for this city.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? JS: We started working on the film in May of 2013, as a speculative venture and got lucky because Anthony Davis and his collation of captains decided to work with us, and let us film with them. We got lucky for a second time when my friends Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey at World of Wonder were gracious enough to take on this project, and share their power and creative energy with us. I now feel like we have not only made the Hoop Dreams of dance, but we have managed to tell an important story about life in America. I am incredibly proud of this film, and grateful for the immense level of support the project has received.

ABOVE THE DROWNING SEA
Canada, 2017 Directors: Rene Balcer, Nicola Zavaglia Subjects: Julianna Margulies, Nick Mancuso, Tony Goldwyn Festival Summary: The story of a terrifyingly arduous journey that is only too resonant today, Above the Drowning Sea, narrated by Juliana Margulies, chronicles the dramatic escape of Jews from Europe on the eve of the Second World War. As Nazism spread, Jewish refugees sought safe harbor from the coming Holocaust. No place would accept them – except the distant city of Shanghai. Still, to flee Europe required an elusive Chinese visa. Enter Ho Feng Shan, the Chinese Consul in Vienna who braved both the Gestapo and his own government, so as to play a pivotal role in bringing the refugees to safety. Above the Drowning Sea is a documentary with the sweep and stakes of a historical epic. It is at once heroic and harrowing – and a cautionary tale for our troubled times.
CANDELARIA
Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Germany, Norway, 2017 Director: Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza Cast: Alden Knigth, Veronica Lynn, Manuel Viveros, Philipp Hochmair Festival Summary: A tender, playful look at the intimate lives of the elderly, this third feature from Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza finds the director looking both abroad and backward in time for inspiration. Set in Havana in 1994, Candelaria concerns a septuagenarian couple whose wearying routine is alleviated by the unexpected appearance of a novel piece of technology. Victor Hugo works in a cigar factory; Candelaria is a hotel laundress and singer. When Candelaria comes upon an abandoned camcorder she and Victor Hugo start to discover its possibilities for posterity, expression – and the revival of romance. The camera's lens becomes an extension of Victor Hugo's eye, allowing him to really see his wife for the first time in years – at least until the camcorder is stolen, an event which leads the couple into territory neither could have imagined.

Panama, 2017 Director: Arturo Montenegro Cast: Gaby Garrido, Patrick Vollert, Lupita Ferrer, Gaby Gnazo, Lorna Cepeda Festival Summary: A joyously irreverent rom-com that plunges us headlong into the collective madness of Carnaval, this second feature from Panamanian writer-director Arturo Montenegro (The Cheque) might be thought of as Romeo & Juliet with fireworks, plumage and some seriously ribald humor. The devastatingly handsome Esplendor and the irrepressibly adorable Donaire (social-media megastars Patrick Vollert and Gaby Garrido) first meet at the airport, having just returned from their respective journeys abroad. Denizens of Las Tablas, he lives on Calle Arriba, she on Calle Abajo, a geographical detail that puts their families in hostile opposition. But Carnaval is coming, elaborate celebrations are being organized, monarchs will be crowned, and such wild festivities have a way of sprouting romance in the most unlikely circumstances.
HOLY GOALIE
Spain, 2018 Director: Curro Velázquez Cast: Alain Hernández, Macarena García, Karra Elejalde, Joel Bosqued, Tito Valverde Festival Summary: Hilarious, inspirational, and just a little heretical, writer-director Curro Velázquez's feature debut stars Spanish heartthrob Alain Hernández – last seen at our Festival in The One-Eyed King – as an unorthodox Catholic priest on a mission to save a monastery by turning a motley crew of amateurs into soccer savants. After courting controversy during his missionary work, Father Salvador is delivered to St. Theodosius, where rules are so strict even hair gel is a sin. The monastery is in financial straits, however, and about to be sold to a hotel chain. Its only hope lies with Salvador, a former fútbolista, charged with transforming some novitiates into a team good enough to win the Clerum Championship – and its considerable cash subsidy. Riddled with unholy hi-jinx, Velásquez has crafted a divine comedy by merrily merging two of Spain's fundamental obsessions.
KILLING JESUS
Argentina, Colombia, 2018 Director: Laura Mora Cast: Natasha Jaramillo, Giovanny Rodríguez, Carmenza Cossío, Camilo Escobar Festival Summary: This spookily confident, semi-autobiographical feature debut of Colombian director and co-scenarist Laura Mora is a tense, absorbing drama that probes the troubled nature of grief, the ethics of revenge and the limits of empathy. Set in Mora's hometown of Medellín, the story is thrust into motion on a wave of pure trauma: 22-year-old Paula witnesses her father being shot to death in front of their home. Paula initially tries to stifle her sorrow with distractions, but an unexpected encounter with her father's killer sets Paula on a course of retribution – one she may not be able to abscond from. Killing Jesus complicates simplistic distinctions between victim and perpetrator, calling into question the way we process crime and punishment in a society teeming with corruption. #09 2018 WIREMAG.COM 17
MAKE LOVE GREAT AGAIN
U.S., 2017 Director: Aaron Agrasanchez Cast: David Haack, Alina Robert, Jason Canela, Jeremy Osorio, Chris Mulkey, Eduardo Yañez Festival Summary: Mexican-born director Aaron Agrasanchez's second feature is a pointed comedy about transnational lovers in a dangerous time. Set in Miami during the Trump ascendancy, Make Love Great Again pits adorable newlyweds Chris and Natalie against a pair of unduly suspicious federal agents charged with approving the verity of their marriage. Chris is American, Natalie is a Mexican in the U.S. on a student visa; their nuptials can grant her that coveted permanent residency – but only if their love story seems credible. Darting between fun and tumultuous flashbacks and the unnerving weirdness of Chris and Natalie being interrogated about their intimacy, Make Love Great Again is about how sometimes you need to lie in order to tell the truth – and how, with a little luck and tenacity, love trumps all.
MY LOVE OR MY PASSION
Argentina, 2017 Director: Marcos Carnevale Cast: Adrían Suar, Julieta Diaz, Federico D'Elía, Peto Menahem, Dalia Gutmann, Rafael Spregelburd, Alfredo Casero Festival Summary: There are fans and there are fanatics – Pedro Pintos (multi-hyphenate Argentine star Adrián Suar) is, to put it mildly, in the latter category. Pedro devours everything fútbol: any team or league, any time. Which is maybe manageable for a young bachelor, but Pedro is a middle-aged husband and father, and his all-consuming passion has finally taken his job and torn apart his family. Pedro is an addict, so he does what addicts do: he joins Alcoholics Anonymous. He just neglects to mention that it's soccer, not booze, that's brought him there. This clever comedy with a serious undercurrent comes from the prolific Marcos Carnevale, last at the Festival with Inseparables. Co-starring the wonderful Julieta Díaz, My Love or My Passion chronicles a war between personal goals and field goals, fleeting thrills and lasting comforts.
OPERATION ODESSA
U.S., 2018 Director: Tiller Russell Subjects: Ludwig Fainberg, Juan Almeida, Nelson Yester Festival Summary: "Operation Odessa" was the code name for a federal task force investigating Russian gangsters in Miami. This film gains candid interviews with key figures on both sides of the operation to tell an outrageous true crime story. It's loaded with colorful characters and absurd details that evoke the novels of Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiassen. At the center of the tale is the Jewish Ukrainian mobster Ludwig Fainberg, known as "Tarzan." He was a linchpin between Russian and Colombian mobsters, from his position as the proprietor of Porky's strip club in Hialeah and Babushka restaurant in North Miami. He teamed with Juan Almeida, a high end car and boat dealer, who specialized in speed boats for drug runners, operating out of the Fort Apache Marina. Filmmaker Tiller Russell skillfully combines their interviews with FBI surveillance recordings to revisit an era of sting operations, gangland betrayals and outlandish stunts culminating in the attempt to buy a Soviet submarine for a Colombian drug cartel. "Operation Odessa" hits the jackpot of crazy South Florida stories. 18 WIREMAG.COM #09 2018
RACER AND THE JAILBIRD
Belgium, France, Netherlands, 2017 Director: Michaël R. Roskam Cast: Matthias Schoenaerts, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Eric De Staercke, Jean-Benoît Ugeux, Nabil Missoumi Festival Summary: Racer And The Jailbird is a movie that has it all: love, crime, sex, and action, all wrapped up in a taut and twisty thriller-come-romance from the Belgian director of Bullhead and The Drop (both of which starred Matthias Schoenaerts) and was the country's official submission for Best Foreign Language Film to the Academy Awards. The racer is Bénédicte, known as Bibi (Adèle Exarchopoulos), an outgoing, young racing driver and the daughter of a wealthy construction magnate. The jailbird is Gigi (Matthias Schoenaerts), a handsome playboy with, it seems, time and money to burn, but there is still much more to him than meets the eye. It may seem obvious from the onset; they fall in love despite her initial resistance. However, when Bibi finds out what Gigi is up to on one of his weekends away – and when one of those weekends goes disastrously wrong – their relationship hangs in the balance and it is put to the test.
SERGIO AND SERGEI
Cuba, Spain, 2017 Director: Ernesto Daranas Cast: Tomás Cao, Hector Noa, Ron Perlman, Mario Guerra Festival Summary: In 1992, the Soviet Union collapsed. Among those left in limbo are Havana university professor Sergio and Soviet cosmonaut Sergei. Sergio was already struggling to provide for his family when the end of the USSR – Cuba's main financial supporter – left he and his countrymen in newly dire straits. Sergei, meanwhile, is abandoned in space when the funding to bring him back evaporates. When Sergio, who's also a ham radio enthusiast, chances upon a channel in direct contact with the MIR space station, he and Sergei become friends – and draw the interest of the authorities. Ernesto Daranas Serrano (Conducta) returns to Miami with this clever, crowd-pleasing comedy about connections between individuals marginalized by history and politics, one of them stuck on an island, the other stuck in orbit: on Earth as it is the heavens.
THE LAST SUIT
Argentina, Spain, 2017 Director: Pablo Solarz Cast: Miguel Ángel Solá, Ángela Molina, Natalia Verbeke Festival Summary: At 88, Abraham Bursztein is seeing his place in the world rapidly disappear. His kids have sold his Buenos Aires residence, set him up in a retirement home and are even trying to convince him to amputate his disabled limb. But Abraham survived the Holocaust, made a successful life in a foreign land, and isn't about to quietly fade away. Instead, he's planned a one-way trip to the other side of the world. Writer-director Pablo Solarz renders Abraham's odyssey as much a journey through the past as a geographical one. With its klezmer-driven score, evocative cinematography and fleet pacing, The Last Suit approaches its weighty themes with a light reverence, showing how any trip truly worth taking is a trip that will change us – no matter how far along we are in life's journey.

Spain, 2018 Director: Mateo Gil Cast: Vito Sanz, Berta Vázquez, Chino Darín, Vicky Luengo, Juan Betancourt, Irene Escolar Festival Summary: Spanish writer-director Mateo Gil (Realive) returns to our Festival with his most inspired and entertaining creation yet, an audaciously imaginative spin on the rom-com that pits a love-struck science savant against the mid-boggling cosmicomic dictates of love and physics. Set in Barcelona, The Laws of Thermodynamics tracks the tumultuous romance between Manel and model-turned-actress Elena. Gliding seamlessly back and forth through space and time, the film takes us on a whirlwind tour of seduction and ecstasy, heartbreak and regeneration. Featuring an interstellar cast that includes Maria (and the Others) star Vito Sanz and Palm Trees in the Snow's Berta Vazquez, The Laws of Thermodynamics balances scenes of romantic bedazzlement with witty commentaries from science experts – though can anyone explain the gravitational pull of the object of one's desire?

Argentina, France, Spain, 2017 Director: Santiago Mitre Cast: Ricardo Darín, Dolores Fonzi, Érica Rivas, Elena Anaya, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Alfredo Castro, Gerard Romano, Leonardo Franco, Paula García, Christian Slater Festival Summary: Nominated for 11 Argentine Oscars – including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for superstar Ricardo Darín – the latest from Miami Film Festival favorite Santiago Mitre offers a riveting portrait of a fictional president simultaneously embroiled in a corruption scandal and forced to play international hardball on his country's behalf. President Hernán Blanco (Darín) is already in trouble when he arrives at a Pan-American oil summit in the Chilean Andes: his lack of high-stakes negotiating experience threatens to undo him, while his daughter's ex-husband threatens to expose Blanco's shadier past.
