PUBLISHER'S CORNER CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF LGBTQ CINEMA It is hard to believe that the OUTshine Film Festival Miami edition is celebrating its 20 year anniversary starting with the Opening Night Film and party this Friday. The Festival has come a long way since its inception, and the lineup of films for this very special anniversary is impressive. As a proud annual OUTshine sponsor with Wire Magazine, I want to invite you to join us in celebrating this very important milestone for the LGBTQ bi-annual film festival that has a mission to "inspire, entertain, and educate the public and encourage a sense of community through international and culturally diverse film." As explained by Festival Executive Director Victor Gimenez, "this year's Festival is especially important because we're celebrating a huge milestone. 20 years ago, there was no dedicated film festival that celebrated voices like ours, and to still be around and to have grown to a twice annual festival is a huge accomplishment." The 20th anniversary OUTshine will include over 80 film premieres, red carpets with more than 20 celebrities, parties, and panel discussions, all supporting LGBTQ filmmakers, actors, and producers. In this week's issue, we bring you a Festival overview, an in-depth interview with Executive Director Victor Gimenez and our Wire Magazine's spotlight of 23 of the best 2018 OUTshine Film Festival Miami edition films. "OUTshine is outspoken documentaries, outstanding films, outgoing people, and, most importantly, OUTshine is you and your stories," explains Victor. After putting together our spotlight films for this issue with Wire Magazine Associate Publisher Michael Bustamante, we are definitely looking forward to seeing many of the films in a theater full of members of our community. Also in this week's issue, we bring you an interview with Zoetic Stage Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer, who directed the production of Fun Home premiering at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Zoetic Stage and the Arsht Center are presenting the South Florida premiere of this five-time Tony Award-winning musical in the Carnival Studio. Fun Home won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book of a musical, and it's about Alison, a lesbian cartoonist who goes deep into her past with a new graphic novel to tell the story of her father – a secretly gay, volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man, whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. In Top Trax, music writer DJ FR8-O takes a thorough look at RuPaul's Drag Race recurring judge Todrick Hall's latest project, Forbidden – where Todrick returned to the studio and crafted another sonically-driven story featuring cameos from R&B royalty like Brandy and Tamar Braxton, plus drag pals Shangela, Bob the Drag Queen and RuPaul. Finally, in Destinations, Michael Sasser tells us about hipster haven Portland, Oregon, which has experienced an amazing real-life evolution over the past decade or so.

ARTS NEWSIE By Rafa Carvajal

FUN HOME

oetic Stage and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts are presenting the South Florida premiere of the five-time Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home from April 12 to May 13 in the Carnival Studio Theater at the Ziff Ballet Opera House. Fun Home, winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book of a musical, is about Alison, a lesbian cartoonist who goes deep into her past with a new graphic novel to tell the story of her father – a secretly gay, volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man, whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Alison relives her unique upbringing in the family's funeral home, her burgeoning sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father during the show. I sat down with Zoetic Stage Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer, who directed the Fun Home production premiering at the Arsht Center to learn more about this original musical. Rafa Carvajal: Describe Fun Home for our readers. Stuart Meltzer: Fun Home is the Tony Award-winning musical based on lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel as she works on a new graphic novel about her family, growing up in her family's funeral home, going away to college and coming out as a lesbian. Her journey confronts her with her father, who was secretly gay and unable to be free in his own skin. Alison's journey takes her down paths that are joyous and heartbreaking.

"I REALLY BELIEVE THAT FUN HOME IS GOING TO BE AN ABSOLUTE MEMORABLE TIME AT THE THEATRE." - STUART MELTZER

8 WIREMAG.COM #16 2018

RC: What do you enjoy the most about your role as director for a show like Fun Home? SM: I never got a chance to see the musical when it played at the Public Theatre or when it transferred to Broadway at the Circle in the Square. That gives me a sense of creative freedom in the rehearsal process because we are able to make our version of this show and not replicate somebody else's. Also, I love the cast so much – we are like a family – which makes it very easy to come to work.

RC: How different is it being the director of a musical versus other stage productions? SM: There are a lot more variables doing a musical. In Fun Home, we have Eric Alsford who is our music director and Jeni Hacker serving as choreographer, as well as playing the role of Helen. There is a lot more freedom in a musical to explore and explode the core at the center of the story. You also have to work faster in a musical, which is difficult for me. I tend to work slowly. RC: Tell us about Alison and how audience members may relate to her. SM: She is a human being trying to fit the pieces of the past together in order to move on to the future. She also has great songs! RC: What is the most challenging aspect of directing Fun Home, and why? SM: The resident stage manager, Amy Rauchwerger told me in rehearsal that I was a stage manager's worst nightmare. Fun Home has animations, three revolving stages, four kids and a crayon-brained director. God bless Amy Rauchwerger!

RC: What are you most proud about Zoetic Stage, and why? SM: I am always proud of the work we produce. I feel that we constantly do very challenging material and bring complex stories and storytelling to the audiences of South Florida. I am proud of the audiences that stay with us for each production. I am proud of new audiences that give us shots. I love this community and, though it has it challenges (because going to the theatre is not always on top of everyone's to do list), there is a great desire to experience something pure and moving. I think we do that. RC: Please give our readers a quick preview of upcoming Zoetic Stage productions they can look forward to. SM: We just announced our 2018/19 season and I feel it is spectacular. In October, we open up with a daring and very sexy new version of Dracula written by Michael McKeever. In January of 2019, we will present the elaborate and thrilling play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime by Simon Stephens based on the novel by Mark Haddon. In February of 2019, a hysterical and incredibly touching play called Every Brilliant Photo by Joan Marcus. Provided by Adrienne Arsht Center

Thing by Duncan MacMillan and Jonny Donahoe will make its South Florida premiere. And then in the Spring of 2019, we will present Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. Yes, we will be back with a Sondheim and his true masterwork. RC: What advice do you have for aspiring directors? SM: Work everywhere, as much as you can, on very difficult material. Listen to everyone, listen to yourself. Be humble and patient. Don't direct because of your ego. Learn how to tell a story. Create your opportunities. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? SM: I really believe that Fun Home is going to be an absolute memorable time at the theatre, and I would love to talk with you after you see the production. I think we will have so much to talk about.

FORBIDDEN FRUIT

side from elevating dozens of drag queens from underground club acts to worldwide icons, RuPaul's Drag Race has been responsible for boosting other artist's careers as well. One in particular is Todrick Hall, who has been a recurring judge on the Emmy-winning drag competition since 2016; but this isn't the first time he's been on the small screen. Throwback to Season 9 of American Idol and you'll see a young Todrick singing – not lip-syncing – for his life to hits from Kelly Clarkson, Tina Turner and Queen. He never made it to the finals, but the exposure gave the multi-talented artist the break he needed to show the world what other tricks he had up his sleeve.

On his latest project, Forbidden, Todrick has returned to the studio and crafted another sonically-driven story featuring cameos from R&B royalty like Brandy and Tamar Braxton, plus drag pals Shangela, Bob the Drag Queen and RuPaul (naturally). Like its predecessor, Forbidden also has a full-length visual counterpart. This latest musical film finds our hero living in a 1950s suburban dystopia where gay is the way and minorities are the majority. Sounds amazing right? Well, you'll have to watch (and listen) and see for yourself. What I love about this album is that it explores the full spectrum of music; from R&B to reggaeton, pop to hip-hop, and theatrical to throwback. Our hero still delivers his signature whitt on tracks like "T.H.U.G," "Type," "Ka-Ching," "Doll Hairs" and "Boys Wear Pink," but it's on the more serious moments where he truly soars vocally. The heartbreaking "Heaven," The edgy "Wanted," the social commentary "Painting in the Rain," all prove that Todrick is more than just a YouTube sensation riding on Ru's dresstails. He's a musical genius who not only uses his gifts to entertain and make us laugh, he also makes us think. My best advice to you is to enjoy this album the same way I did, by watching the full-length Forbidden film on YouTube first. It puts each song into context through a stunning visual storyline, with every number more beautiful and moving than the last. If you still need some more Todrick Hall after that, check him out live during America: The Forbidden Tour coming to The Fillmore Miami Beach on May 2.

Over the years leading up to RPDR, the singer-songwriter, rapper, actor, dancer, director and choreographer produced several mind-blowing YouTube videos – some of which rival the quality of epic Hollywood blockbusters – showcasing his creativity as well as his soulful pipes. As his views multiplied, so did his opportunities. Not too long after his first stint with Mama Ru, Todrick released his first visual concept album, Straight Outta Oz, toured the album across the U.S. and Canada, and starred as Lola in Broadway's Kinky Boots. Being a child of the stage since he was 8, the now 33-year-old returned to Broadway earlier this year, slipping into the toe-tapping shoes of Billy Flynn in Chicago. Not bad for a kid from Plainview, Texas!

s a proud annual sponsor, Wire Magazine invites you to join us in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the OUTshine Film Festival, the LGBTQ bi-annual film festival with a mission to "inspire, entertain, and educate the public and encourage a sense of community through international and culturally diverse film." This year's Festival will take place in Miami April 20-29. According to Executive Director Victor Gimenez, "This year's Festival is especially important because we're celebrating a huge milestone. 20 years ago, there was no dedicated film festival that celebrated voices like ours, and to still be around and to have grown to a twice annual festival is a huge accomplishment." The Festival has continued to grow and the 20th anniversary OUTshine will include over 80 film premieres, red carpets with more than 20 celebrities, parties, and panel discussions, all supporting LGBTQ filmmakers, actors, and producers.

Film Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex, Fashion, and Disco, followed by the after party at MOLTO South Beach. Our Closing Night film is 1985, and the after party will be at Lobster Bar Sea Grille. Another great highlight is the world premiere of Getting Started, a short film starring past board member Susan Solman and guest starring Jen Kriz, our current vice-chair.

"THE FESTIVAL PROVIDES AN AVENUE FOR STORIES ABOUT OUR HISTORY, OUR LIVES, OUR EXPERIENCES, AND OURSELVES TO BE TOLD." - VICTOR GIMENEZ

RC: What are your top 3 favorite films and why? VMG: That's a tough question, since they are all so good. I'll give you two documentaries and one narrative. The first documentary is Queerama, which is my pick for the Festival – it's a movie lovers documentary about the history of queer cinema. Next up is Transformer – not your typical transgender story. My top pick for narrative is Postcards from London. The movie comes across as filmed theatre and it is beautiful. RC: What are you looking forward to the most about OUTshine Miami this year? VMG: We are trying a few new things that I hope our audience gets behind. We have a free community screening of Barbarella at Soundscape Park on Tuesday, April 17. We also have two creative sessions with Seed & Spark. The first one on Saturday is about how to use crowdsourcing to get your creative idea funded, and the second one on Sunday is about the art of the pitch. The other new thing we have is a cultural screening with the YoungArts Foundation of four LGBTQ shorts created by their recent alumni, as well as five of their Transformations Film Series.

PHOTO PROVIDED BY OUTSHINE FILM FESTIVAL

RC: Describe OUTshine in 3 words. VMG: Outstanding, outspoken and outrageous. RC: Are there any celebrities attending this year's Festival? Who? VMG: We are always fortunate to have visiting filmmakers and talent in attendance. Opening Night we have stars Cristiano Caccamo and Diana Del Bufalo, the stars and creators of Eastsiders on Netflix. We also have Kit Williamson, John Halbach, audience favorite Dreya Weber, Judith Kasen-Windsor, Jana Winternitz and Lily Hollerman from Funny Story, and Yen Tan, the director of our Closing Night Film 1985, among many others. RC: What does it take to put together OUTshine? VMG: It takes a lot of people coming together to make it happen. From our great staff to our incredible board, and involved volunteers. The Festival involves programming, event production, marketing, public relations, membership, grant writing, sponsorships, and many small details to pull it together.

RC: How are the films for the Festival selected? VMG: Films are submitted to the Festival through our submissions portal; relationships we have with distributors, filmmakers, sales agents; and visiting other film festivals such as Sundance, Berlinale, Outfest, and Frameline. Once we receive the films, our volunteer screening committee gets to work. All the films submitted are watched at least by five different people. Those films that receive above a certain grade are moved forward and the others are dropped. Once the committee has screened all the films, the chair of the committee, our programmer Joe Bilancio and I get to work programming the Festival. The screening process is a very time consuming process, and we are very lucky to have a dedicated batch of individuals who give so much of their time. RC: Why do you think OUTshine is so important for the South Florida LGBTQ community? VMG: The Festival is about sharing our stories. The Festival provides an avenue for stories about our history, our lives, our experiences, and ourselves to be told. It allows us to see our faces and stories to be told to many others. It allows a closeted student to see they are not alone. It allows a survivor of the early AIDS epidemic to share their loss and history to a younger generation. It allows a younger generation to share who they are with those who came before. OUTshine allows us to discover who we are and share that discovery with others. And just as important, it allows us to share these experiences together with our friends and our community. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? VMG: When you support the Festival by coming to the movies, becoming a member, donating of your time talent and treasure, you are supporting the sharing and saving of our stories. OUTshine is outspoken documentaries, outstanding films, outgoing people, and, most importantly, OUTshine is you and your stories. #16 2018 WIREMAG.COM 15

SPOTLIGHT FILMS: 23 OF THE BEST 2018 OUTSHINE FILM FESTIVAL Miami Edition Films Photos provided by OUTshine Film Festival

1985

(U.S., 2018) Director: Yen Tan OUTshine Synopsis: Inspired by the award-winning short of the same name, 1985 follows Adrian (Cory Michael Smith, Gotham), a closeted young man returning to his Texas hometown for Christmas during the first wave of the AIDS crisis. Burdened with an unspeakable tragedy in New York, Adrian reconnects with his younger brother and estranged childhood friend as he struggles to divulge his dire circumstances to his religious parents played by Virginia Madsen and Michael Chiklis. Shot in luscious black & white, 1985 is a beautiful, powerful film both in story and style.

A MOMENT IN THE REEDS (Finland and UK, 2017) Director: Mikko Makela

OUTshine Synopsis: Having moved to Paris for university, Leevi returns to his native Finland for the summer to help his estranged father renovate the family lake house. Tareq, a recent asylum seeker from Syria, has been hired to help. When Leevi's father must return to town, the two young men establish a connection and spend a few days discovering one another. The film casts the long-marginalized voices of sexual and ethnic minorities center-stage in an exploration of contemporary Finnish society and national identity, but the struggles and issues are universal.

ANTONIO LOPEZ 1970: SEX FASHION DISCO (U.S., 2017) Director: James Crump

OUTshine Synopsis: Fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez breathed an alluring wind of change in the NYC and Paris fashion scenes in the 1970s. Lopez took the rather sedate world of fashion illustration by storm, creating colorful pictures inspired by street-life, people of color and a particular take on transgressive sexuality. Lopez's talent, appetite for life and magnetic sex appeal attracted lovers of both sexes and a crowd of young models that included Jerry Hall, Grace Jones and Jessica Lange. It's a heady mix of glamour, fashion and disco that's impossible to resist.

CHERRY GROVE STORIES (U.S., 2018) Director: Michael Fisher

OUTshine Synopsis: In an era when it was illegal for two men to hold hands in public, the pristine beachfront hamlet of Cherry Grove on Fire Island in New York was a safe haven for gays who were often targeted for arrest and prosecution. Through interviews with residents and new and archival footage, Michael Fisher's oral history of the enclave uncovers long-hidden secrets and exposes little known stories that are more relevant than ever today. Cherry Grove Stories documents the community in its nascency, its evolution as a vacation destination and the community's promising future.

IN BETWEEN SEASONS (South Korea, 2017) Director: Lee Dong-eun

OUTshine Synopsis: A woman is bringing up her high-school son alone. While she has established a close bond with her son, she did not know he is gay and only finds out after he is seriously injured in a car accident. She takes out her confusion and anger on her son's close friend, but the young man deals with the situation more calmly and with greater wisdom than she does. Brought to vivid emotional life by an excellent cast, the film confronts Korean homophobia and depicts a mother-son relationship with searing clarity.

MARIO

(Switzerland, 2018) Director: Marcel Giser OUTshine Synopsis: Mario has fallen in love for the first time. Yet his new love is Leon, the team's new striker, who could pose a threat to Mario's chances of advancing his soccer career. Before long, their relationship is discovered by their team members and rumors begin to spread beyond the locker room. Mario realizes this jeopardizes his career as a professional football player, but he does not want to lose Leon at any price. He has to make a decision. Does he risk his fame as a soccer star or the only man he has truly loved?

MCQUEEN

(UK, 2018) Directors: Ian BonhĂ´te & Peter Ettedgui OUTshine Synopsis: Alexander McQueen's rags-to-riches story is a modern-day fairy tale. An unremarkable working-class boy, he harnessed his demons to become a global fashion brand and one of the most iconic artists of the century. How did this punk rebel overturn the silver-spoon world of Paris haute couture, and why, at the height of acclaim and power, did he shockingly put an end to it all? Mirroring the savage beauty, boldness and vivacity of his design, McQueen is an intimate revelation of his own tortured and inspired world, which celebrates a radical and mesmerizing genius of profound influence.

MY BEST FRIEND

(Argentina, 2017) Director: Martin Deus OUTshine Synopsis: Lorenzo lives in the quiet Patagonia of Argentina. He is a quiet teenager, intelligent, a good student, curious, and more skilled in music and literature than sports. Lorenzo's father decides the family will temporarily take in his best friend's son, Caito. Caito lives in Buenos Aires and has a different background and tough kid machismo and style which Lorenzo finds intriguing. They start spending a lot of time together and soon their friendship is evolving towards a deeper relationship, until Caito reveals a secret that changes everything.

OUTshine Synopsis: Antonio and Paolo live happily together in Berlin and are finally getting married. They decide to celebrate in the small village in Italy where Antonio grew up. While his mother immediately supports his intentions, her husband Roberto, the town Mayor, is much more reluctant. Paulo, who has not spoken to his conservative mother in a long time, must get her to the wedding as a condition of the marriage. Throw in a couple of wacky roommates and the aisle to the altar is paved with hilarity, hijinks and lots of love!

POSTCARDS FROM LONDON (UK, 2018) Director: Steve McLean

OUTshine Synopsis: Buff and beautiful teenager Jim (Harris Dickinson, Beach Rats) moves from the London suburbs to Soho where he falls in with a gang of unusual high-class male escorts – The Raconteurs – who specialize in intelligent post-coital conversation. From shy novice to sought after escort and eventually artist's muse, Jim would be the toast of the town if it wasn't for his annoying affliction – Stendhal Syndrome – a rare condition which causes him to hallucinate and faint. When Jim is roped into the world of detecting art forgery, could his condition bring about his downfall?

QUEERAMA

(UK, 2017) Director: Daisy Asquith OUTshine Synopsis: Queerama is a film created from the treasure trove of the BFI archive. The story traverses a century of gay experiences, encompassing persecution and prosecution, injustice, love and desire, identity, secrets, forbidden encounters, sexual liberation and pride. The soundtrack weaves the lyrics and music of John Grant and Hercules & Love Affair with the images and guides us intimately into the relationships, desires, fears and expressions of gay men and women in the 20th century – a century of incredible change. Queerama is a century of gay rights and desires on film.

QUIET HEROES

(U.S., 2017) Directors: Jenny Mackenzie, Jared Ruga & Amanda Stoddard OUTshine Synopsis: In Salt Lake City, the religious monoculture severely complicated the AIDS crisis. Patients received no support and were even exiled from the political, religious, and medical communities. Mormon culture encouraged gay men to marry women and have a family to cure themselves of their "affliction." This counsel led to secret affairs and accidental marital transmissions. In the entire state and intermountain region there was only one doctor to serve all HIV/AIDS patients. This is the story of her fight to save the lives of a maligned population everyone else seemed willing to just let die.

STILL WAITING IN THE WINGS (U.S., 2017) Director: Q. Allan Brocka

OUTshine Synopsis: Still Waiting in The Wings follows the trials and triumphs of actors waiting tables in Times Square. While dreaming of the Broadway stage, the reality of slinging hash under fluorescent lights mixes sweet aspirations with bitter drama. There's no people like show people and there's no telling what can happen when they're pitted against each other. Nick Adams, Ed Asner, Carole Cook, Lee Meriwether, Patricia Richardson, Chita Rivera, Seth Rudetsky, Sally Struthers, Bruce Vilanch, and Cindy Williams round out this heartwarming homage to Broadway with some delightful cameos.

THE MARRIAGE

(Kosovo, 2017) Director: Blerta Zeqiri OUTshine Synopsis: In a rare gay-themed film from Kosovo, Anita and Bekim are adding the final touches to their big wedding day which is only two weeks away. Despite expecting news about Anita's parents, declared missing since the 1999 Kosovo War, and having to deal with Bekim's controlling family, the couple seems to manage all the preparations. But when Nol, Bekim's secret gay lover, returns unexpectedly from abroad, the situation becomes complicated, especially since Bekim realizes that a spark still exists. Inevitably, the wedding banquet becomes loaded with tension as the unusual love triangle starts to unravel.

TO A MORE PERFECT UNION: U.S. V WINDSOR (U.S., 2017) Director: Donna Zaccaro

OUTshine Synopsis: To A More Perfect Union: U.S. v Windsor tells a story of love, marriage and a fight for equality. The film chronicles unlikely heroes – octogenarian Edie Windsor and her attorney, Roberta Kaplan, on their quest for justice. Beyond the story of what became the pivotal case in the marriage equality movement and the compelling personal, legal and political stories behind it, the film also chronicles our continued journey as a people, as a culture, and as citizens with the promise of equal rights.

PORTLAND t's hard to say which has buoyed Portland's hipster reputation more: the Oregon city's amazing real-life evolution over the past decade or so, or the version of the city in the IFC series Portlandia, which lovingly mocks both the laid-back city and modern absurdities.

HIPSTER HAVEN

To enjoy Portland is to get around to its various neighborhoods, which are distinct but often share a story of decade-long renaissance and rediscovery. Portland was long visualized and planned around neighborhoods and there are nearly 100 identifiable ones. A few are essential for any itinerary. The Alberta Arts District in northeast Portland is defined by art spaces, food trucks, boutiques and cafes – having rebounded from years of neglect. Mississippi Avenue's must-see is the 40,000-square-foot ReBuilding Center which helps locals re-use material from de-constructed homes and businesses to keep the area green. Very Portland and you can see the impact on the neighborhood. 20 WIREMAG.COM #16 2018

Either way, it's worked. Portland is hot... (or cool?) – these youngsters today and their vernacular! And it is hot/cool for all the reasons that appeal to and attract a groovy vibe and those who take energy from it. A visit to Portland is all about enjoying those aspects of this relaxed city and the diverse people who contribute to that atmosphere: the outdoors, arts and culture, eclectic shopping, coffee house culture and increasingly, world-class food with regional twists.

In the southeast, Belmont and Hawthorne remain true to their hipster roots, adapting to the times with the advent of second hand shops, ethnic restaurants and un-ironic dive bars. Downtown's Cultural District puts a lot at your disposal in a relatively small area, including the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the Portland'5 Centers for Performing Arts, the Oregon Historical Society, the Portland Art Museum and the Northwest Film Center. Portland's very good public transportation systems converge at Pioneer Village where big-brand shopping and regularly scheduled entertainment keep the energetic vibe going. Visitors will want to bring a solid pair of walking shoes, despite the ease of public transit in Portland. It's a beautiful pedestrian city with almost 30 percent of the city blanketed in tree canopy and such memorable stops as the International Rose Test Garden, the crystal springs rhododendron garden and almost 300 public parks scattered throughout the region. Much of the city is also notably bike-friendly.

Indie boutiques and vintage stores define East Burnside, although the area also includes wildly popular restaurant Le Pigeon, the 1960s-era Jupiter Hotel and live music mecca Doug Fir Lounge. Northwest Portland's Nob Hills has gorgeous classic homes paired with some of the hottest dining venues in the city. The Pearl District is anchored to the south by Powell's City of Books (the world's largest independent bookstore) and to the north by BridgePort Brewing (the city's oldest microbrewery).

That ever-present possibility of evolution, integration and change, executed with the distinct laid-back culture of Portland is what makes the city a comfortable, uniquely modern American city and an unforgettable destination. Despite its laid back feel and pedestrian friendly lifestyle focusing on arts, cafe life, dining and festivals (of which there are many), nightlife does still thrive here. As with many younger, liberal cities, Portland isn't famed for gayborhoods so much as for integration. Interestingly, Portland is home to an uncommonly large and vibrant lesbian community. Many of the overtly gay bars and clubs are clustered downtown and just north of downtown. But, again, you are just as likely to find a coffee house, restaurant or dive bar having just been "discovered" by the boys and ladies the week you arrive.

I refuse to let HIV get in the way of my busy schedule. I even have a cell phone app that reminds me to take my HIV meds. I know that the more control I have over my HIV, the less power I give to the virus. I take control by taking my HIV medication every day.
