PUBLISHER'S CORNER I WON'T AGREE NOR STAY SILENT "He who is silent is taken to agree," so, like John Brennan, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, just did in a recent opinion article published in The Washington Post, I have a duty to speak out loudly and critically against Donald Trump's hypocrisy this week and his outrageous double standard in criticizing comedian Samantha Bee for using profanity in a joke about Ivanka Trump. The man who constantly hurls insults and lies, and has used the exact same type of profanity in public speeches and in recordings we have heard, opened his big mouth to criticize someone just a couple of days after he purposely did not say anything about Roseanne Barr's racist tweets... truly abhorrent! There used to be a time when the title President of the United States meant something. These days, we can see with our own eyes what this man truly represents and it is far from the title he holds. What has our country's executive branch turned into? Why do we tolerate Trump's vicious cycle of never ending lies, insults, discriminatory statements and attacks on our most important law enforcement institutions? Exercise your right to speak out and to vote for people who represent the values our nation was built on, rather than any politician who constantly lies and repeatedly attacks our most important institutions. At least this week I was glad to see Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump's press secretary, quickly recognize and call out "disgusting comments" and language that is "vile and vicious" when criticizing Samantha Bee's foul language joke. Huckabee Sanders can now also properly comment on and label her own boss' disgusting comments and vile and vicious language we have all heard in speeches and recordings. So press secretary, next time you hear comments and language that are disgusting and vile and vicious be prepared to acknowledge it and criticize it when the words come out of Donald Trump's mouth and Twitter feed. On a much lighter note, for this week's cover story, I sat down with Palace owner Thomas Donall and three of his hottest bartenders to get the scoop on the new happy hour in the heart of Ocean Drive, what they like most about working at Palace, their favorite drinks, and much more. In Dining Delicious, I share my recent experience dining at Boulud Sud Miami, which offers vibrant Mediterranean cuisine complemented with fresh local ingredients. In Destinations, Michael W. Sasser tells us all about Bermuda, known for its strong British culture, laid-back island living, beautiful beaches and many adventure opportunities. In Arts Newsie Picks, I preview the upcoming Arsht Center's CommuniTea Dance Pride Month celebration, The Illusionists – Live From Broadway, and Sam Smith's The Thrill Of It All Tour concert. Finally, in Top Trax, DJ FR8-O shares with us that singer-songwriter Jessie J has chosen four very distinct emotions to explore in R.O.S.E., and she's doing it in a way that might very well change the future of the traditional LP.

I love Mediterranean cuisine and its multiplicity of flavors, spices, seasonings and cooking methods, so these three appetizers really hit the spot: Octopus à la Plancha with arugula, Marcona almonds and Jerez vinegar; Arabic Lamb Flatbread with eggplant, pine nuts and labneh; and Corn Soup with manouri cheese, zucchini and croûtons. I also enjoyed three delicious entrées, a simply grilled Lamb Chop with my choice of Tzatziki sauce (yogurt, cucumber and garlic); Agnolotti pasta with mushroom, snap peas, bresaola and parmesan fonduta; and Moroccan Chicken Tagine with couscous, cauliflower and turnips. For dessert, I sampled Executive Pastry Chef Saeko Nemoto's Coffee and Chocolate Cube with black cardamom crémeux, praline feuilletine and baklava ice cream.

Besides its delightful cuisine, Boulud Sud Miami offers wine selections that focus on regions along the Mediterranean coast and complement regional cuisines, plus you can also enjoy a variety of French, domestic and South American wines. The cocktail program is inspired by coastal influences from both Miami and the Mediterranean with homegrown selections that feature signature recipes and tropical flavors, in addition to other libations that showcase spirits and ingredients from the Iberian Peninsula to Cyprus. The cocktails are craft and seasonal driven, and include a gamut of aperitif-style refreshers and delectable sippers with added complexity.

JESSIE J BLOOMS ON

R.O.S.E. Jessie has always been celebrated for her powerhouse pop anthems like "Price Tag," "Burning Up" and, of course, the chart-topping juggernaut "Bang Bang." But after the success of her 2014 album Sweet Talker, the hitmaker found herself in a rut. "I wasn't enjoying the music I was making as much as I should," she said during a recent Billboard interview. "I wanted to make music that put me in the feeling. But to do that I had to be really strong; to know that I wasn't going to be able to be pushed and fall over." So after some soul searching and some frustrating sessions with her co-writer and producer DJ Camper, she was able to find her voice again. This time with a more subtle vibe. Unlike the UK diva's previous offerings, her lat-

est collection is immersed in R&B/soul with very few fist-pumping moments – and I'm not mad at that. R.O.S.E. took some time to perfect, so when it was ready, Jessie decided to release the material slowly. Much like the petals of its namesake, gradually opening up for all the world to see. The album is divided into four parts that were released over four days – Realisations (because that's how the Brits spell it), Obsessions, Sex and Empowerment. Individually, each EP spotlights Jessie's vocal prowess, but together they prove that it takes a lot more than a case of writer's block to shut down her creativity. Realisation opens with the stripped down "Oh Lord," most likely the artist's plea for inspiration to create the lush tapestry that follows. The rest of the journey finds Jessie awakening to professional, social and family issues. The pace is accelerated a bit on Obsessions with the hypnotic "Real Deal" and the vicious clap-back "Petty," either of which could find themselves in heavy club rotation with the right remix. You would think that Sex would be the nastiest part of the set, but what it lacks in kink, it makes

up for in sensuality, especially on the steamy "Dangerous." This chapter's most unexpected surprise – and Jessie's one wink back to her pop roots – is the Cheryl Lynn sampled "Play." Basically made up of the R&B classic, "Got To Be Real," layered with a fresh radio-friendly melody. It's a welcome break from the slew of ballads that came before it. The final set, Empowerment, should have been called love, but that probably would've sent the marketing team into a tailspin. Title appropriateness aside, the final quarter finds our heroine praising a higher power (whoever that may be), a higher love and higher self-worth. Like any true artist, especially in music, it's important to step outside of the box and take some risks every now and then. With R.O.S.E., Jessie has not only stepped out of the well-orchestrated package that she was once trapped in, she's kicked it aside completely. She's also given us plenty of time to take it all in piece-bypiece, rather than trying to force feed us 16 new tracks in one sitting. That in itself proves that she's not just playing the game, she's rewriting the rules, one EP at a time.

If you're a recording artist, producer or musician and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at abarrios@wiremag.com. 12 WIREMAG.COM #23 2018

ong before we started using emojis to express our feelings, roses were the symbol of choice for articulating everything from love to condolences. In the case of Jessie J's latest message to the world, R.O.S.E., the singer-songwriter has chosen four very distinct emotions to explore, and she's doing it in a way that might very well change the future of the traditional LP.

BERMUDA

AN ISLAND UNTO ITS OWN

enerally when one thinks about jetting off the East Coast to a gorgeous island paradise, one envisions the tropical splendor of the Caribbean, complete with bath-tub temperature water, calypso, casinos and resorts often set off from the general population.

And then, there is Bermuda. (As in the Bermuda Triangle, which, one can't help but notice, is slightly less ominous in the age of GPS and satellite phones.) Many might think of Bermuda as part of the Caribbean, but it is not. It rests hundreds of miles north of the Bahamas, just 650 miles east of the North Carolina shore and only a two hour flight from many cities on the U.S. East Coast. It also isn't a single landmass. Instead, it consists of 181 islands, islets and rocks, but only eight are inhabited and linked by bridges and causeways. As for its reputation for pink sand beaches on much of its 75 miles of coastline, well, that part is true – the result of a combination of crushed coral, calcium carbonate and the shells of a tiny single-celled animals. Pink beaches, cerulean waters, well-manicured greenery throughout, Bermuda pairs a strong British culture with laid-back island living, perhaps exemplified by its best-known conceptual export – Bermuda shorts. 22 WIREMAG.COM #23 2018

Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda and its only incorporated city (there is also the old capital, St. George, one incorporated village and a handful of unincorporated ones, which are well worth visiting). Given it is only 21 square miles, real estate is at a premium and accommodations represent less of a range than one might find in the Caribbean – they can be costly. But visitors get what they pay for, which is a good thing, because the scenic elegance of venues such as Cambridge Beaches, The Reefs, Hamilton Princess & Beach Club and others are the stuff of vacation fantasies. There are a handful of more traditional hotels and guest houses that are less expensive. Wherever you stay will just be your base of operations. Bermuda's location results in temperate weather and it is not usually extremely hot or cold, so getting out and about is comfortable year-round. And you will want to get out and about. Beaches range from quiet types like Astwood Cove to adventurous Admiralty House Park with its cliff-jumping and rock climbing, deep water, cool caves and tall cliffs. Cooper's Island is a nature preserve for those who want to explore diverse topography and bird watch. Horseshoe Bay buzzes with activity for the highly social beach-goer. Jobson's Cove and Tobacco Bay are appealing as gorgeous romantic sites. Consider exploring the water snorkeling and scuba diving as well. Easy access to deep water allows divers to walk off the beach in some places and in minutes be in deep water. There is terrific wreck diving (check out the wreck of the Constellation, which inspired Jaws author Peter Benchley's The Deep), as well as 200 miles of reef ringing Bermuda to explore. There are also plenty of options for boating, sailing, fishing, fast-paced or relaxing water sports and, in spring, whale watching. Land-lovers can still enjoy the beautiful coast of Bermuda, riding horseback on the pink sand. Bermuda's Crystal Caves is a surreal subterranean wonderland of crystal clear underground lakes and amazing rock formations – which inspired Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock TV show. On land, key attractions include Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, the Bermuda National Gallery, the museums, shops and restaurants at the Royal Naval Dockyard (formerly the Royal British Navy's Bermuda headquarters), the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (three attractions in one!), among many others. Unwind after a day on (or under) the water, exploring caves, or taking in attractions with a trip to one of the island's many spas – or enjoy

a horse-drawn carriage ride through town. Bermuda cuisine is as diverse as its many cultural influences and obviously buoyed by the bounty of the sea. From a laid back fish chowder or fish sandwich to elegant presentations of spiny lobster, black grouper (ask for it "Bermuda style" for a subtropical treat), Yellowfin tuna and much more. Local favorites include the traditional codfish breakfast, Hoppin' John and Black Rum Cake, to name just a few. For the traveler familiar with the Caribbean, Bermuda presents a distinctly different experience. However, whether one is a frequent island-hopper or just getting one's feet wet as an explorer, Bermuda is a destination certain to create memories of a lifetime. Michael W. Sasser has been a travel writer for more than 20 years, for publishers ranging from Time Out and Frommer's to Miami Herald Custom Publishing and ABARTA Media.
