PUBLISHER'S CORNER LET'S HELP OUR FELLOW FLORIDIANS Initially, Hurricane Michael was just a weak tropical storm that appeared to be close to dissipating in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, mother nature had very different plans for this devastating storm. Michael ended up heading northeast and gaining tremendous strength from the warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. This life-threatening category 4 hurricane made landfall northwest of Mexico Beach with 155 mph winds just short of a category 5 hurricane and a very destructive storm surge. Hurricane Michael ravaged the Florida Panhandle and continued its path of destruction into Georgia and the Carolinas. Our fellow Floridians in our State's Panhandle just lived through the strongest storm on record to hit the Florida Panhandle and one of the strongest hurricanes to ever strike the continental United States. They need our help. Please do what you can to assist the victims of Michael. You can donate funds to organizations well-known for helping storm victims and maximizing every dollar donated by spending the least possible on administrative fees and executive compensation. Do a simple Google search to find the best-rated organizations in terms of these criteria and choose the one(s) you feel most comfortable with. The time to help our Panhandle neighbors is now! On a different note, this week, we bring you a fashion and style cover story showcasing the bright and colorful Spring/Summer 2019 men's collections of HUGO BOSS and Acne Studios. Top Trax previews the A Star Is Born soundtrack, co-written, produced, and performed mostly by Lady Gaga, which follows a turbulent journey and romance as it narrates the story with every lyric. With several new films out in theaters, Wire Magazine Flix film critic Alyn Darnay bring us two film reviews this week. The House with a Clock in its Walls is an early family-friendly Halloween present from the master of gore Eli Roth filled with a mix of spirited fun, light horror, and unabashed humor. Alyn enjoyed this fun kids film with a few mild scares and recommends watching it. If you like films that are heavy on effects, you won't be disappointed by Venom because it is very visual. However, if you're looking for a film with a cohesive story, Alyn suggests that you stick with one of the better superhero movies such as Captain America. This past weekend, I watched several outstanding films at the Miami Film Festival GEMS 2018 – sponsored by Wire Magazine. I hope some of our readers were also able to attend this world-class film festival. I also saw the new Broadway Across America production of the Phantom Of The Opera at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on opening night. This production has a brilliant new team of Tony Award winners, and it's performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making it one of the largest ever productions on tour.

A STAR IS BORN By DJ FR8-O
S O U N D T R A C K
s there anything Lady Gaga can't do? Just when we think we've seen all there is to see (and hear) from her, she unveils yet another curveball that proves once again she's more than just a fleeting pop star. This time she's doing it on the big screen as "Ally," an aspiring singer whose career and emotions explode with the help of "Jack," a seasoned musician with struggles of his own, played by four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper. Together they are both magic and toxic as their relationship spirals out of control. With all this drama unfolding on screen, it's no surprise that the soundtrack would mirror that passion, struggle, and heartache in a way that only Lady Gaga can conceive.
and "Too Far Gone." Other members of their squad include Mark Ronson, Diane Warren, Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow and Lukas Nelson; the son of legendary country singer Willie Nelson. For those of us who can appreciate the country side of Gaga, but still hunger for her club days, DJ White Shadow weaves in a few pop tracks in the form of "Hair, Body, Face," "Look What I Found," and "Before I Cry."
Much like she's done throughout the course of her own career, Gaga gives us all her sides on this soundtrack; not just the pop star, not just a country singer, not just the dance diva or the walking art installation that enslaved the world's attention a decade ago. The film's theme song "Shallow" evokes all the feels, both emotionally and physically – I get goosebumps every time. Ally takes her first plunge into stardom belting out "I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in, I'll never meet the ground," but she is at her most spectacular on the epic finale "I'll Never Love She didn't pull this off on her own though. In ad- Again," a Grammy-worthy ballad reminiscent of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," dition to his directorial, production, writing and the iconic theme song from the late singer's own film debut on The Bodyguard. acting duties on the film, Cooper himself has some rather impressive penning and producing Gaga already has one Oscar nod under her belt for "Till It Happens To You" from the 2015 creds on the soundtrack's grittier tracks as well; documentary The Hunting Ground, but A Star is Born – both the film and soundtrack – could like the guitar-driven opener, "Black Eyes," "Alibi" be the vehicle that finally brings it home for her.

Co-written, produced, and of course performed mostly by Gaga, the soundtrack doesn't just follow Ally and Jack's turbulent journey, it narrates the story with every lyric – from their first meeting, to the rise of Ally's music career to the couple's trainwreck romance. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cooper explained that "There is no lyric that's ever in any point of the movie that doesn't have exactly to do with where one of them is or hopes to be or regrets being. That was our launching pad, and then it was just about discovering what songs fit in the right places." In order to capture the nuances and the true feeling of each moment, Gaga insisted on writing and recording the soundtrack on-set during filming; a technique that clearly paid off, given the intensity and rawness of every track.

THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS ere comes an early family-friendly Halloween present from the master of gore Eli Roth (Hostel), and it turns out to be filled with a mix of spirited fun, light horror, and unabashed humor. It is based on John Bellairs popular book and more than a little reminiscent of the 2015 Goosebumps film, which also featured Jack Black. For fans of the book, you'll find it as easy to watch, as the book was fun to read. With a general lack of good, watchable live-action films made specifically for young children, here's one that makes the grade on any number of levels. It is set in the 1950s and just filled with bedazzling eye candy; fanciful sets, playful furniture, living hedges, secret panels, sparkling energy balls, strange machinery, living dolls, and devilish pumpkins.

warlock and witch, deeply involved in the world of magic and sorcery. They are unquestionably the oddest couple of wizards to ever grace the screen. The house itself is haunted by the presence of its former owner Isaac (MacLachlan), himself a powerful practitioner of the dark arts and Jonathan's ex-partner, who died suddenly while conjuring an evil spell. When Lewis unintentionally raises Isaac from the dead, the young aspiring warlock must work with Jonathan and Florence to stop Isaac's doomsday plot. In order to do that, the trio must find a mysterious clock hidden somewhere within the walls of the house.
The casting is very interesting, using Academy-Award winning actress Cate Blanchett as a foil for Jack Black's beguiling kooky uncle turn. VENOM
By Alyn Darnay
here are so many things you could do with $100,000,000 budget that could better the human condition, the least of which is to make an unmemorable-film. And yet, here it is, Venom, a movie in all its overladen visual effects and with its staggeringly mundane clichés.
DIRECTED BY: RUBEN FLEISCHER
CAST:
TOM HARDY MICHELLE WILLIAMS MARCELLA BRAGIO RIZ AHMED REID SCOTT SCOTT HAZE JENNY SLATE
the brilliant but nefarious founder of the Life Foundation. In failing to do so he loses his job, his girl (Williams) and seemingly his mind.
I'm not trying to say it's an absolutely terrible movie; it's just a disappointing one. Yet, I can see that if it hits you just the right way, this incoherent mess of a film could be a fun diversion for a couple of hours.
Months later, following an inside tip; Eddie attempts another run at Drake only to accidentally become the host of an alien symbiote, Venom, that gives him a violent super alter-ego. As the two fight for control of his body, their adversarial bickering leads to partnership and then friendship while they fight to protect the world from another more sinister symbiote.
Venom started out its life as an adversary in the film Spiderman 3, an outer space parasite that invades his body and turns him evil. Not a bad concept, but it didn't work well there and it just barely works here. Why do you ask? It's simple. Venom is not really the superhero opera it pretends to be; it's more a straight out monster mash. Venom is actually an undulating, shape-shifting, mean-spirited, homicidal villain that the filmmaker is trying to divine as acceptable by turning the whole thing into a classic buddy film. Now that's strange, to say the least.
Tom Hardy is arguably one of our most uniquely talented actors and usually a joy to watch, but here he drowns in special effects overkill, particularly in the latter part of the film. Additionally, Director Fleischer (Zombieland) never seems to be able to hold the whole film together cohesively, he gets lost between moments of absurdity, wisecracking, heavy-handed action, and nastiness. The actor who comes across best in the film is Michelle Williams, who delivers another engaging fully developed character; she can play any part.
Here's the storyline…
My take... If you like films that are heavy on effects you won't be disappointed by this one, it's very visual. However, if you're looking for a film with a cohesive story stick with one of the better superhero movies such as Captain America.

FASHION & STYLE:
SPRING/SUMMER 2019 MENSWEAR By Michael Bustamante
e may not have a crystal ball to see into the future, but we have something better, the fashion collections for Spring/Summer 2019. Let's take a look at what HUGO BOSS and Acne Studios put on the runway for Spring/Summer 2019, as they will contain trends that we will certainly adopt in the near future. It's still too early to tell, but it appears the streetwear trend has finally ended and we're moving on to bright rave-like colors, while still remaining sophisticated. Expect lots of pockets, effortlessly styled suits, denim, trench coats, and neon colors.
HUGO BOSS

This season, the HUGO BOSS Spring/Summer 2019 collection was inspired by California – coastal cities and modern houses that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Deemed as fresh and beachy, the new collection is designed to be incredibly relaxed, with the precision design that HUGO BOSS is known for. Tones of blush pink and pale blue are seen throughout the collection accompanied by sartorial burgundy and navy. Rich colors can be seen as well in the form of light teal, orange and yellow. The looks are contrasted by full outfits in white, once again reinforcing summer in an elegant and clean way. A lot of the pieces have a "summer treatment," as if exposed to sea spray like the lightweight nylon coats and suits made from crinkled cotton and paper-touch cloth. The looks are accompanied by wide-brim hats and colored sunglasses, in a fashionable effort to protect you from the famed California sun. Enjoy sporty looks made with expert workmanship and craft techniques.

According to Jonny Johansson, Creative Director of Acne Studios, "I wanted to experiment with the definition of garments. What would happen if, when you described a pair of jeans, you were actually talking about a blouson? It was the beginning of a new set of archetypes, around which we built a wardrobe that plays with the idea of misinterpretation." If you ask me, that's exactly what he did by creating pieces that were cut and constructed to look like they were something else. Neon yellow is seen throughout the collection in the form of linen, making the intense dye luminescent. Textures also play a huge part of the collection with sweaters that look like body scrub towels, and a vest that looks like a bathroom loofah. Hyper-reality is also part of the top pieces with a digital image of the Stockholm archipelago. The accessories are reimagined with loafers that look like sponges, chunky shoes and bags that look like blankets – all very whimsical and fun.

DESTINATIONS
PRIDE JOURNEY: he only things I knew about Kansas City, Missouri prior to visiting, were the tales of legendary BBQ and the Chiefs. I went with an open mind and little expectations. The city has been generating a lot of positive buzz as of late, so I thought I'd see what all the talk was about. I found the city to be on the cusp of a breakthrough so to speak. A sleeping dragon ready for its day in the sun. The next "It City" – Nashville being the current "It City" and where I reside. For starters, Kansas City airport is literally the smallest international airport I've ever been to. But that will all change in the next few years as it undergoes a major transformation. Icelandair just began flying direct routes to its capital city of Reykjavik and other routes are being added regularly. The 21c Museum Hotel served as my home for the weekend. The small chain is known for embracing the LGBTQ community and is located in cities that aren't always known for being LGBTQ-friendly destinations (Des Moines, Lexington, Fayetteville, among others), so staying here is always a safe and comfortable option. This particular property is located in the historic Savoy Hotel in downtown Kansas City. The hotel opened this summer and is led by a welcoming, knowledgeable, and quite attractive staff. The one downside of the property is the fitness center, which has serious acoustic problems. Furthermore, the free weights are located in a dark corner of the gym, a problem that can easily be fixed but is a bit uncomfortable currently. 20 WIREMAG.COM #42 2018
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI Having arrived a bit later in the day, I decided to stay on property for dinner. The hotel's restaurant, The Savoy, doesn't serve your standard hotel fare. I began my meal with a delicious steak tartare, followed by the fish of the day, which was cooked to perfection. The most exciting part of the meal, however, was the Baked Alaska. I have not seen that item on a menu outside of a cruise ship, and even though I tend to skip dessert, I felt the need to give it a try. I'm glad I did. It was absolutely delicious. I even convinced the table adjacent to me to order some. The only thing it was missing was the tableside flambé. The next morning, I began my tour of Kansas City with a brief visit to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. As I was approaching the building, I thought to myself how similar it looked to the Sydney Opera House, and sure enough, it was designed by the same architect. The Kauffman Center is one of the most technically advanced performing arts centers in the nation, with each of its two major concert halls designed to be acoustically perfect. The halls share a common area which the designer hoped would serve as a space where people attending different shows can commingle. A short drive away is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which houses more than 35,000 works of art. The building itself is quite impressive and, architecturally, it reminded me of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Recently, the Nelson opened the American Indian galleries, which are the largest collection devoted to this category of art in the world. Another wonderful component of the museum is the outdoor Sculpture Park which contains more than 30 sculptures. Watch out for the sprinklers though. My guide and I received a complimentary shower while walking through the park, but it was welcomed given the intense heat of the summer. All of this culture got me hungry, so I heard about a fairly new establishment that served up great BBQ called Char Bar. The majority of the meal didn't blow me away; I found it on par with BBQ I can find locally in Nashville, but the one standout, and something that Kansas City is known for, are burnt ends. I almost didn't order them, but my dining companion convinced me to order a side potion. I still salivate when I think of them. Burnt ends may be the best BBQ item I've ever had…ever. Yes, they are that good. If you ever visit Kansas City, burnt ends are a must!

Spend some time in the Crossroads Arts District, consisting of fine art galleries, cute clothing boutiques, and old historic buildings before heading out to Bistro 303, the gay bar where Kansas City's LGBTQ community "begins" their evening. I don't party as much as I used to, so I decided to begin and end my evening at 303. The laid-back establishment offers a nice cross-section of the city's community and serves inexpensive, but wellpoured cocktails. Within minutes of sitting at the bar, I was involved in a friendly conversation with some of the locals, who told me about Missie B's, the popular drag bar in the city. Apparently, it's the place everyone goes to after Bistro 303. I'll have to find out for myself next time I visit. If partying isn't your cup of whiskey, wake up early the next morning and head to River Market for breakfast. In operation since 1857, the market is the largest farmers' market in the region and consists of over 140 vendors. It was nice to grab a cup of coffee and freshly baked muffin and watch the bustling crowd begin their day.

Kansas City is home to the National World War I Museum and Memorial. The moving memorial provides a first-hand look into the war. I would suggest jumping on a guided tour of the museum as the volunteers are extremely knowledgeable about not only the war, but the museum itself. Soon after WWI ended, Kansas City leaders formed the Liberty Memorial Association to create the memorial in honor of the men and women who had served in the war. If you have the chance, journey to the top of the 217-foot tower for unobstructed views of the city, but be prepared to wait in line for a while.
Overall, Kansas City was a pleasant surprise even though I didn't have a chance to catch a Chiefs game. If you're looking for a relaxed, friendly, inexpensive city to visit, I would definitely add KC to your list. 22 WIREMAG.COM #42 2018

Those looking for a unique experience should head to SD Strong Distilling. Located in Parkville, Missouri, it is the world's only known distillery in a cave. I was lucky enough to get a tour and tasting of the distillery located 65-feet underground. For dinner, head over to Café Trio, an upscale, gayowned restaurant which offers killer martini's, a tasty menu and live entertainment on their grand piano. Begin your meal with the Trio Caprese consisting of fresh heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella, basil oil, cracked pepper, and sea salt. It is the perfect appetizer to share with a partner. Follow that with the Diver Scallops with a charred corn risotto and lobster jus. I love a good scallop dish and Café Trio didn't disappoint.
