PRIDE JOURNEY:

PALM SPRINGS

P

First impressions are everything and I had forgotten how easy Palm Springs airport is to navigate. Within minutes after walking o the plane, you can be laying poolside at your hotel or shopping along the boutique and art gallery heavy Palm Canyon Drive. I was visiting with my friend and fellow journalist Josh Rimer, who was named Mr. Gay Canada 2019. He and I met on a media trip in Phoenix/Tempe and have traveled to Columbus, Ohio together as well. Visiting a destination like Palm Springs is more fun if you travel with someone unless you are an extreme extrovert, which neither Josh nor I are. Having traveled together in the past made this visit fun and enjoyable.

alm Springs is one of those destinations that you never get tired of. I'm not sure if it's the landscape or the abundance of over-the-top gayness that makes the city truly magical. On my most recent visit to the desert gay mecca, I attended Palm Springs Pride, an event headlined this year by TLC and Kristine W. This year was the largest pride celebration in the city's history. I even had the opportunity to meet Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon. After checking in at Alcazar Palm Springs, we headed straight for the Opening Night Pride Party at Trina Turk, which was hosted by Brandon Liberati and Craig Ramsay. The party drew a who's who of Palm Springs glitterati. Every year, Trina Turk donates a portion of proceeds from items sold during the event back to the pride organization.

Before heading out on the town, grab dinner at Trio, a staple in Palm Springs since 2009. In fact, the first time I visited the city almost a decade ago, I dined at Trio. Josh and I decided to share a few starters including the Coachella Valley Dates and Ahi Tuna Tower. We were both hesitant to order the dates as they are filled with blue cheese, which neither one of us are a big fan of, but they turned out to be delicious. The blue cheese complemented the sweetness of the dates which simply melt in your mouth. Trio also hosts one of the best parade-viewing parties in town, so if you come to pride in 2020, be sure to make a reservation. Palm Springs nightlife is truly one of the best experiences in the country. There is a bar or club for every type of person, ensuring that whether you are LGBT or Q, you will fit in. Arenas Road has emerged as the epicenter of nightlife in the city with

After a night of partying, retire back to the Alcazar for a restful night's sleep before heading out to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to get a bird's eye view of the city. I'll admit, I don't like heights nor roller coasters, so the tram made me nervous. The ten-minute journey to the top, aboard a rotation car, is quite the experience. There are five towers along the way and as the car passes each tower it swings back and forth, sometimes slightly, other times, enough to make you a bit queasy. A little side note, the temperature is at least 20 degrees cooler on top of the mountain, so dress accordingly. Josh and I wore our traditional tank top attire and were a bit chilly, to say the least.

Music lovers should also take note that Palm Springs is the gateway to Coachella and Stagecoach Festival, two of the largest outdoor music festivals in the country. Stagecoach has grown into the premier country music festival in the United States since its inception in 2007. The three-day event will take place April 24-26 and feature headliners Eric Church, Carrie Underwood and Alan Jackson. Palm Springs is a destination that always lives up to my expectations. Whether you are looking to party until dawn, relax by one of the dozens of pools around town, or go hiking in nearby Joshua Tree National Park, the destination really does offer something for everyone. Enjoy the journey!

Located adjacent to Arenas Road is Johannes, a lovely restaurant owned by Chef Johannes Bacher. The modern décor is accented by the establishment's menu, which includes an assortment of house specialty Schnitzel. Hailing from Austria, Johannes brought his favorite dish to Palm Springs

and it quickly became a favorite among the locals. Of course, we had to try some, and I can tell you, it does live up to the hype. I don't remember the last time I saw schnitzel of any kind on a menu, outside of a German restaurant, which I learned is a different type of preparation. Another one of my favorites at Johannes was the Grilled Marinated Peaches & Burrata. I'd give that a try if you are looking for a lighter option. PHOTO PROVIDED BY PALM SPRINGS AERIAL TRAMWAY

A CHAT WITH CHEF ZAC YOUNG: THE 19TH ANNUAL FOOD NETWORK & COOKING CHANNEL SOUTH BEACH WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL By Rafa Carvajal

T

his year's 19th annual Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival, also known as SOBEWFF, will take place February 19-23, 2020, presented by Capital One. I always enjoy joining celebrity chefs, culinary personalities, winemakers, spirits producers, and thousands of fellow foodies at the Festival. The 2020 SOBEWFF will include more than 100 events across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. In this issue, we also preview the chefs attending SOBEWFF, as well as some of the best events, including Festival favorites, brand new events, and the CRAVE Greater Fort Lauderdale Series presented by My Fort Lauderdale Beach. To purchase tickets and for more information, visit sobewff.org. You can also stay up to date by following the #SOBEWFF on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and by visiting wiremag.com/ free for a free subscription to Wire Magazine, so you can download our digital issue into your computer, tablet or mobile phone.

"ALL OF MY STRENGTHS AND INTERESTS COLLIDE IN PASTRY, WHICH IS ALL ABOUT CREATIVITY WITHIN THE CONFINES OF SCIENCE. I ALSO WANTED A JOB WHERE I COULD WEAR PAJAMA PANTS TO WORK." - ZAC YOUNG

16 WIREMAG.COM #3 2020

SOBEWFF's mission is to "Eat. Drink. Educate." and the Festival does so by supporting the education of future leaders of the hospitality industry at the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University. To date, the Festival has raised over $30 million. To gain some insights and preview this year's SOBEWFF, Wire Magazine sat down with Chef Zac Young, one of the Top Ten Pastry Chefs in America by Dessert Professional. Check out what Zac what to say and learn about his culinary skills. Furthermore, find out which Festival events Zac will be partaking in, and learn what he is looking forward to the most about this year's SOBEWFF.

"THE FOOD WORLD IS SO GENEROUS, THERE ARE NO 'SECRET RECIPES,' I ALWAYS GET INSPIRED BY NEW IDEAS AND TECHNIQUES."

PHOTOS BY SETH BROWARNIK. WORLDREDEYE.COM

- ZAC YOUNG

Rafa Carvajal: Why did you decide to become a pastry chef? Zac Young: I was an art-centric kid. I loved pottery, dance, music, theater. I was also shockingly strong in science and math. All of my strengths and interests collide in pastry, which is all about creativity within the confines of science. I also wanted a job where I could wear pajama pants to work. RC: What is the best part of what you do for a living? ZY: Watching people's reactions and connections to what we make. Pastry is much more emotionally evocative than savory food. I love playing with people's sensory memories. A ri on peanut butter and jelly, an updated classic recipe from my grandmother, or a cocktail inspired dessert. Watching people smile, laugh, and cry when they see and experience a dessert brings me great joy. RC: What are you looking forward to the most about this year's SOBEWFF? ZY: Seeing my friends and colleagues! Not just to let loose and throw back some mojitos, but to also see what everyone else is serving. The food world is so generous, there are no "secret recipes," I always get inspired by new ideas and techniques. RC: What event(s) are you participating in during this year's Festival? ZY: Goldbelly presents Sweets & Beats and Fontainebleau Miami Beach presents Wine Spectator's Best of the Best.

#3 2020 WIREMAG.COM 17

PHOTOS BY SETH BROWARNIK. WORLDREDEYE.COM

RC: Tell our readers about those event(s). ZY: Sweets & Beats is the best late-night fiesta in South Beach, featuring some of my favorite pastry people and friends like Jacques Torres, Hedy Goldsmith and Buddy Valastro. At Best of The Best, you get 60 acclaimed chefs from around the country and 100 wines, which scored over 90 from Wine Spectator. This is like some fancy, luxurious wining and dining. RC: Why do you think the SOBEWFF has become so popular with chefs, TV personalities and attendees? ZY: I live in New York, so South Beach in the winter is a dream. But, the name really says it all: South Beach Wine and Food Festival. I'm sold! RC: What culinary ventures are you focusing on these days? ZY: My partnership with Goldbelly, which is an amazing online marketplace that you can get iconic foods from notable eateries all over the country shipped right to your door. I started shipping our original Thanksgiving PieCaken with them years ago, and have now expanded to include more holiday offerings throughout the year. Up next is the PassCaken, our PieCaken for Passover. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about yourself or SOBEWFF? ZY: If you can't find me, I'll be by the pool with a glass of sparkling rosé.

"WATCHING PEOPLE SMILE, LAUGH, AND CRY WHEN THEY SEE AND EXPERIENCE A DESSERT BRINGS ME GREAT JOY." - ZAC YOUNG

LATINOS SALUD TH 11 ANNIVERSARY GALA

L

Rafa Carvajal: Tell us about this year's 11th Anniversary Gala and why it is going to be a night to remember. Stephen Fallon: We're staging the Gala at the Design Center of the Americas, with its sweeping atriums and colorful style. We'll have live music, powerful speakers and videos that will awaken your community spirit, a sit-down dinner, open bar, drag, Mardi Gras dance, and great gift bags. The parking is free, the silent auction items enticing, and you'll see in the faces of our staff, board, and members just how much your attendance means to us. RC: How can Wire Magazine readers purchase tickets to the Gala? SF: To make the most out of our fundraising efforts, we're handling tickets directly. This saves fees, and also usually allows us to seat groups of friends together, even if they ordered separately. You can start a ticket request right through the front page of our website, by emailing events@latinossalud. org, or by calling 954.765.6239 ext. 201. We'll finish the order, and send you the tickets. The best part is that we have some special pricing if you get your tickets before the end of January. 24 WIREMAG.COM #3 2020

atinos Salud's 11th Anniversary Gala will take place Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA). The evening will be emceed by the gorgeous reality TV star and HIV and LGBTQ activist Carmen Carrera. Wire Magazine sat down with Executive Director of Latinos Salud Stephen Fallon, Ph.D., to talk about the mission of Latinos Salud and the importance of the Gala in helping fulfill that mission.

RC: Remind our readers what is the mission of Latinos Salud and the importance of the Gala in helping you fulfill that mission. SF: Latinos Salud is out to end the HIV epidemic here in South Florida. We focus on gay Latinos, a population historically under-served, and experiencing the highest rates of new infections. But, we do not only serve gay Latinos. We also serve their partners, anyone living with HIV, and anyone who identifies as transgender. We provide free testing for everyone. Did you know that we provide 5,000 free HIV tests each year, case management, outreach, youth programs, leadership development, linkage-to-care, and other free services? We have three full time locations open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for convenience, and we do not charge for any services. That level of service requires a lot of rent and enough bilingual trained staff. RC: What part of the evening are you most looking forward to, and why? SF: Carmen Carrera will emcee the event. She is a strong advocate for HIV awareness, transgender equality, and the community. We also have a surprise guest, a rising star who knocks the roof off. The main stand out is just how much different our Gala will feel. For those who attend galas all season, this one will be in a fresh venue, with a mix of groups and faces, some familiar and many new, all with the corazon (heart) that you would expect from Latinos Salud. RC: Describe the Gala in three words. SF: Energy, passion, and community.

RC: What are Latinos Salud's top priorities and new initiatives for 2020? SF: We're like that car rental agency that used to advertise, "We're number 2, so we try harder." There's an urgency here at Latinos Salud that is palpable. We are always pushing our limits to serve more community members and serve better. We're adding Ryan White case management at both of our Miami-Dade locations this year. We're adding a pop-up location in the deep Southwest of the county. At both Broward and Miami-Dade, we're becoming more techbased, so you can get certain test results, appointments, and messages right away. We have changes coming that are going to make getting on PrEP less of a hassle if that's your preferred way to stay safe. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? SF: You don't have to be Latino to be served by Latinos Salud, to have a friend or partner touched by our services, or to make a dierence in our mission. If you've never supported our agency before, we are asking you to step up this year and make a dierence. Best of all, you'll have a great time at our Gala!
