We understand that it was not easy to convince Michael Eisner, Disney’s CEO, that The Lion King would be a hit in Broadway. How was that accomplished? Really it was more the other way around. Michael encouraged a group of artists to try adapting Beauty and the Beast for the stage, and it became Disney’s first Broadway hit. He wondered if The Lion King could also work on Broadway...the film score by Elton John and Tim Rice was a solid foundation with a number of popular songs. It was Julie’s vision as director that catalyzed the team to take the risk. How were the costumes conceived and designed so that the animated characters could come alive on stage? Julie had done work with masks, and her breakthrough idea for this production was that the actors would wear masks on their heads, leaving their faces visible to UIF BVEJFODF TP UIFSF JT B EVBM FWFOU EVSJOH UIF TIPX XF TFF CPUI UIF DIBSBDUFS mask AND the actor’s face at the same time. She also knew that the audiences’ imaginations would be even further engaged if the characters were represented in different ways throughout the show, so for example, we see Simba as a masked actor (actually twice since we see him as a cub and a young adult), an articulated puppet, and as a shadow puppet. What are the most significant differences/variations between the theatrical production and the animated film? How crucial was Julie Taymor in the creation of the characters’ costumes, the production of the show and its success on Broadway? Julie’s vision and leadership was essential from the the atrical production’s inception. How are you holding up with the eight-showa-week schedule? How long have you been in the show? Can you share your audition experience? I have been with the show for almost two years now. This was my Broadway debut and then I contin ued with the tour when we set out in October of last year. My audition was pretty unique. I borrowed a pair of heels from a friend and heeded the advice of my manager to go in for the role. Having never seen the show and only knowing that they had just revived it a few years back in 2005, I was not so anxious to book the job. The actual audition was one of the most thorough and dynamic dance calls I had ever been to. When you see the show you will understand why, we do a little bit of everything. 11 out of an original group of 90 or so were called back a week later. When I got there, I started looking around and noticed that the 10 other boys each had a hair person, makeup person, or both BOE * IBE NZ EBODF CFMU -ZDSB KB[[ QBOUT BOE B HSFBU CJH TNJMF *U XBT B SFBM iTIPX NVTU HP POw moment. I just gave them all I had, from the heart, and next thing I knew I was waking up to one of the most amazing phone calls of my life, Duncan Stewart, the casting director, asking me if I wanted to join the La Cage family. Ya, I screamed after accepting, of course. Why do you think La Cage is such a hit? It’s an emotional entertainment roller coaster. Audiences come in night after night, not quite sure where we will take them, and they walk out with smiles on their faces. They’ve exercised their minds, hearts, faces and stomach muscles through all the comedy and drama. The story is so poignant and really drives home the message of equality and love without mounting a soapbox. In a way, we invite you to be enlightened AND entertained!! When did you first get connected with Hair? I did a regional production of it a year before I booked it on Broadway. Can you tell me a little bit about your character? He is young and full of life. He wants to be a leader and the center of attention but doesn’t quite have it figured out yet. He is very sensitive and he provides a little bit of ambiguously sexual comic relief. What do you like most about playing this character? I love how fun it is, as a man, to explore my sensi tive side. How are you and your character similar and different? I am actually very sensitive. I try to hide it, but it’s nice to let it show! Can you summarize the story of HAIR for me? HAIR is about a tribe of hippies living in Central park. Claude gets his draft notice in the mail, and he and we don’t know quite how to react. The rest is about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. We all take our clothes off at the end of Act 1!
Do you think there are any similarities to the GLBT equal rights movement and the overall story of HAIR? If so, please explain.
