Glitter Nation: A COLORFUL ADVENTURE IN INDIA BY DANE STEELE GREEN
An amazing Technicolor-dream country from start to finish, India revels in 5,000 years of imperial glory. India is not just a vacation, it is a journey through a dizzying array of sight and sound. I just returned from a site inspection of India, sizing it up for a potential gay travel destination. We started in New Delhi, India’s throbbing political nerve center. An excellent launchpad for exploring the surrounding region, the city is an enticing mix of ancient spice bazaars, British sophistication, and frenzied energy. (National Geographic rates it “one of the Ultimate Cities of a Lifetime.”). Which, of course, begs the question of accommodation. The hotels certainly get the Steele stamp of approval. The Leela Palace in New Delhi and the Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur are two 5-star wonderlands of maharaja opulence. Any luxury travel junkie would be more than impressed with the top-notch level of accommodations and service they offer. When it comes to glitter, India does not skimp. It’s as if everyone in the country has their own Bedazzler and a bottomless well of fluorescent dye. Both wealthy and poor women wear electric-hued saris, while men dress in fantastically embroidered kurtas. We were lucky to be in Jaipur, during Diwali, India’s festival celebrating the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. This is the time of year when India’s affection to the rainbow kicks into high-octane overdrive! Throughout our trip we experienced a constant high level of service and opulence. However, we also witnessed pure poverty as we drove through local villages and towns on our way to Rajasthan. We saw the famed and ostentatious Taj Mahal and then paid a visit to Varanasi, where the Ganges river washes away sin and sends the dead on their final journey – an experience that was branded into my mind for life. Our final stop was Udaipur, a beautiful resort on Lake Pichola. The scenery and beauty of this city was superb, the most perfect way to finish our trip. India has a myriad of faces representing the ancient past intertwined with modernity and timeless village life. There is no doubt to me that India is a destination that should be experienced by all. It is an honest place where everyone sports a smile, rich or poor. A few nights during our trip we attempted to find the local gay scene, as I love to do as a gay traveler. We quickly realized that the scene in India was almost non-existent as homosexuality is not fully recognized or understood in the Indian culture. So, we decided to leave our colored flags back in New York and, instead, traded them in for the brilliant Technicolors of India. LOOKING GOOD NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
BY KEN HUNT
Happy New Year! As always, at this time, our thoughts naturally turn to New Year’s resolutions. The tradition of the New Year’s resolution goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces (sounds like a few old boyfriends or girlfriends), Janus could look back on the past events and forward to the future. But what exactly is a “resolution?” According to Wikipedia, “A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more lasting personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. This goal must be reached by the next New Year.” Keep in mind that this is a goal, not a wish, and should be something that you as a person can strive for. Rather than suggest what you should do, I thought instead that I would give you a framework to use so that you can decide on the resolutions that are right for you. Everyone has their own personal goals - things that they want to achieve - both personally and professionally. Create a plan. Setting a goal without formulating a plan is merely wishful thinking. In order for your fitness resolution to have resolve (as the word “resolution” implies), it must translate into clear steps that can be put into action. A good plan will tell you a) What to do next and b) What are all of the steps required to complete the goal. Use a calendar and give yourself a timeline. Plan to achieve a certain goal by a certain day. Create your plan immediately. If you’re like most people, then you’ll have a limited window of opportunity during the first few days of January to harness your motivation. After that, most people forget their resolutions completely. Write down your fitness resolutions and your plan. This will help you stick to it! Use a notebook, journal or special file on your computer or iPhone or iPad.Think “year round,” not just New Year’s. Nothing big gets accomplished in one day. Resolutions are set in one day, but accomplished with hundreds of tiny steps throughout the year. New Year’s resolutions should be nothing more than a starting point. You must develop a ritual or habit for revisiting your plan. Be flexible. Expect that your plan can and will change. Life has a funny way of throwing unexpected things at us, and flexibility is required to complete anything but the simplest goals. Most of all recognize partial successes at every step along the way. Just as a resolution isn’t accomplished the day it’s stated, neither is it accomplished the day you reach your goal. Rather, it’s accomplished in many small increments along the way. Remember too that a slip is not a fall. Just get up and keep moving forward! Ken Hunt is an AFI-certified trainer and fitness expert who owns New York and Miami’s Steel Gym. DAILY GRIND
BY DR. GREGG A. PIZZI
WHAT IS HOOKING-UP, ANYWAY? I’ve often heard people say that they’re “not into hook-ups.” For a long time I wondered, “What is a hook-up, anyway?” I had always thought that hookingup simply meant ‘getting together.’ I remember hearing people say, “Let’s see if we can hook-up after work” or “Let’s hook-up when you’re in town and catch a game.” It didn’t seem to carry a sexual connotation when two straight guys used it. Nowadays, it seems difficult to mention the term at all without raising eyebrows or getting looked-at funny.
ART DECO SUNDAY @ PALACE PHOTOS BY HENRY PEREZ
Palace divas packed a punch at this year’s Art Deco Weekend 2012. Partygoers joined the crowds at Palace to celebrate the festival among many other festivities on Ocean Drive honoring all things Art Deco.
In addition to having seemingly become another term for ‘having sex,’ the use of the term ‘Hook-Up’ appears to carry a socially-undesirable connotation now. It not only means having sex, but having sex in a bad (or at least secretive) way. Urban Dictionary (www.UrbanDictionary.com) provides the following definitions for “hooking up.” Some of them are quite funny. “An incredibly ambiguous phrase that drives me absolutely insane when people use it. John hooked up with Mary. (So what did they actually do? Did they meet at the park? Did they talk? Or did they duke like viagra-injected rabbits? Who knows?)” “Any form of getting some type of action, such as making out, feeling things, or oral pleasure or sex between two people. A hook up is what’s referred to as doing those things when you’re not going out with anyone.” “In Australia, hooking-up just means kissing (with tongue). So, basically you go to a party, mingle with some people and then you spot a cute guy/girl and start talking and flirting or whatever and then you kiss. That’s hooking up. Usually it isn’t followed by anything after that night. Hooking up = Fun times with random hotties.” “To engage in romantic/sexual activity with another at a party/gathering. Usually, one or both partners are under the influence of alcohol, or another judgment-impairing drug. Hooking-up usually involves little or no emotional attachment.” “The act of making out or other sexual activity while not in the presence of others. The people hooking-up had to go somewhere else. (1) I hooked-up with this hottie after the club. (2) Kissing someone at a bar is a bar smooch or making out, but taking them home or around the corner is hooking-up.” So, what’s YOUR definition? DAILY GRIND
THE DIRTIEST LITTLE TOWN IN SOUTH FLORIDA? After Miami-Dade County, one would be hard pressed to try to name which municipality in South Florida has the ugliest politics. But would anyone think North Miami? That’s right, the sizable working class community best known for the Museum of Contemporary Art and Mario the Baker’s pizzeria has evolved – one might say devolved – over the years to be one of the roughest, dirtiest political scenes in the region. The reason: money. A few years ago, the feds took a sizable tract of land on North Miami’s east side off the EPA Super Fund cleanup list. That parcel, which became Biscayne Landings, turned into an utter morass as the economy tanked, but it also attracted big money interest in potential development and the inherent corruption. The influx of powerful special interests coincided with the advent of a new political establishment in North Miami, led by colorful Mayor Andre Pierre. Sadly, whether coincidence or not, North Miami politics has degenerated in conjunction with the Pierre administration. Pierre has certainly been an arbiter of this change, with his entire administration to date characterized by nuttiness – from an obsession with phony law enforcement to name-calling, dirty campaign tricks and enough race-baiting and manipulation of the cowardly politically correct press to make even a member of the Obama administration blush. From the police department to trash service and everything in between, every aspect of public policy and every North Miami institution has been tainted by the whiff of corruption. Some arrests related to political chicanery have taken place around town and if there aren’t more it’s just because of typical establishment incompetence. As bad as it’s been, North Miami politics hit a new low last week when the mayor effectively referred to Councilman Michael Blynn’s daughters as “prostitutes” at a meeting in response to Blynn’s bringing up Pierre’s cousin’s arrest on bribery charges. Although Pierre later sort of apologized, it was only slightly more off color than the usual rhetoric he employs. To make it worse, City Clerk Michael Etienne defended the mayor, proving that North Miami’s unique system in which the clerk is elected clearly results in grossly unqualified public servants.
“A MAYOR CALLING A COLLEAGUE’S DAUGHTERS PROSTITUTES? AND YOU THINK YOUR TOWN’S POLITICS IS VILE?”
A mayor calling a colleague’s daughters prostitutes? (For the record, I knew both of Blynn’s daughters when we were young and they remain beautiful, brilliant and certainly not prostitutes.) And you think your town’s politics is vile? The next time you see a negative political ad in your local election, ask yourself: Is it worse than calling a political colleague’s daughters whores? Probably not. And North Miami tolerates this. Who would have thought it? BY JAMES CUBBY
The 11th annual edition of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, America’s favorite wine and culinary extravaganza, offers a new and exciting schedule of events for this year’s festival from February 23-26. This year’s Festival may even surpass the programming of last year’s milestone Festival. “I believe the 2012 program features a number of fresh and exciting changes as well as those events that have become fan-favorites over the years,” says Festival Founder and Director Lee Brian Schrager. “There are some great new events that I’m really excited about – the first public event at the new Marlins Stadium (Diamond Dishes dinner), our second event at the stunning 1111 Lincoln Road space is a party presented by Epicure and hosted by Robert Irvine, Swine & Wine hosted by Debi Mazar & Gabriele Corcos, and of course honoring two renowned members of the wine and culinary industries – Charlie Trotter and Piero Antinori.” The successful festival began 11 years ago as a one-day festival known as the Florida Extravaganza, which was held at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus. In 2002, Lee Brian Schrager took over the festival and brought it to South Beach and renamed it the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Last year Schrager co-authored the book The Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival Cookbook: Recipes and Behind-the-Scenes Stories from America’s Hottest Chefs. The book takes readers on an unparalleled all-access tour of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival including an insiders look that includes some of the top movers and shakers of the food world such as chefs Guy Fieri, Bobby Flay, Rachael Ray, Rom Colicchio, Thomas Keller, Alice Walters, and Paula Dean. While the book is a great read, it’s nothing like experiencing the festival first hand.

The variety of this year’s events is astounding and many sell out quickly so foodies and wine aficionados are advised to order tickets early. The Festival is a smorgasbord of events including brunches, lunches, dinners, wine tastings, awards ceremonies, parties, demonstrations, seminars, and family events. The beloved BubbleQ has been replaced with Moët Hennessy’s The Q presented by Allen Brothers, hosted by Emeril Lagasse and Guy Fieri. The Q also features its own late-night party called The Q After Dark. The Burger Bash, hosted by Rachael Ray, returns but has moved to Friday night. Wine Spectator’s Best of the Best is also scheduled for Friday evening at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. The 2012 Tribute Dinner presented by Bank of America, an event not to be missed according to Schrager, honors the world’s greatest wine and culinary talent. This year’s dinner pays tribute to esteemed chef Charlie Trotter and celebrated winemaker Piero Antinori. Those in the food industry know that Trotter’s namesake restaurant in Chicago is one of the finest restaurants in the world. The Antinori family has been making wine for 26 generations and is known as one of the leading Italian producers of fine wines. “I think that our Tribute Dinner creates a truly memorable experience each year – from Ferran Adrià, Martha Stewart, Emeril Lagasse, Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse and so many more, all the way to the King & Queen of Spain, it is always an extraordinary evening,” adds Schrager. While many look at the festival as only taking place in the tents on the beach, the festival schedules events in a variety of locations. The success of last year’s 10th Anniversary party in the stunning 1111 Lincoln Road parking space prompted the Festival to secure the space once again for Party: Impossible, featuring Epicure Gourmet Market, hosted by Robert Irvine - who is a big fan of the

Festival. “I enjoy the whole food and wine experience, and especially Burger Bash and the whole Miami vibe that weekend,” says Irvine. “The event really brings together the whole food and beverage community in one amazing setting for all to see.” Food Network fans will recognize Robert Irvine from his appearances on shows like Dinner: Impossible, Worst Cooks in America, and Restaurant: Impossible. Another hot new event at the 2012 Festival is The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Late Night Bites, an event based of the hit primetime series. It’s also an event that Schrager marks as one not to be missed by visiting foodies. The Flavors of Flay, a casual dinner offering Festival-goers an opportunity to get a sampling of the cuisine of famed chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author Bobby Flay, is another popular event of the Festival. Flay, one of Food Network’s popular celebrity chefs, is the owner and executive chef of 12 restaurants and has hosted seven Food Network shows. Adventurous foodies may want to try Dining in the Dark, another new event and the latest dining sensation. Hosted by David Burke with Market 17, the event has diners enter the dimly lit ballroom of the Gansevoort Hotel where they will enjoy a four-course feast in the dark. Burke, a chef, artist, entrepreneur and inventor, is one of the leading pioneers in American cooking today. While Food Network celebrities and celebrity chefs dominate, this year’s festival also welcomes stars from the cinema like Antonio Banderas and Debi Mazar, both hosting events. Banderas will be hosting Matador! An Introduction to Anta Banderas Winery, where he will give guests a glimpse into his winery. Debi Mazar, best known as press agent Shauna Roberts on the HBO series Entourage, joins her husband Gabriele Corcos to host Swine &

Wine to showcase their own pig roasting recipes. Set at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, this new event hosted by Mazar & Corcos, co-stars of the new cooking series Extra Virgin, has already created quite a buzz. Chef Michael Chiarello, owner of Napa Valley’s famed Bottega restaurant, returns to the Festival to host two events. “I am excited to be back at the SOBE Festival and am doing two great events: the first is part of the New York Times Dinner Series called Napa Style in the Mandarin. I am hosting along with fellow chef Joel Huff. I am also one of the featured chefs/winemakers at Wine Spectator’s Best of the Best event at the Fontainebleau.” Participants like Chiarello are also fans of the Festival who attend many of the events. “I am looking forward to Dining in the Dark with David Burke - I have known David for years and imagine that event should be an interesting one! I am also looking forward to seeing the new Miami Dolphins Ballpark at Diamond Dishes - my friend Chef Scott Conant will be preparing one of the courses and people are eating their dinner right out on the field. And I can’t wait to see my fellow Next Iron Chef competitor, Alex Guarnaschelli at Best Thing I Ever Ate - I trust she will not disappoint me! “ Although wine is the focus of many events, others focus on the food, such as Talking with My Mouth Full with Gail Simmons and guest Josh Wesson. Simmons, Special Projects Director at Food & Wine magazine, will be discussing her new memoir Talking With My Mouth Full: My Life As A Professional Eater while offering up tasting samples of her favorite recipes from the book. International wine personality Josh Wesson will pair wines to Simmons’ recipes. Besides her own seminar, Simmons voiced that she’s excited to attend the Festival. “I am most excited to see the changes that have been made to the Festival this year, especially the new “The Q” now taking place on
WIRE COVER: 2012 FOOD NETWORK SOUTH BEACH WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL Thursday night. The BubbleQ, its predecessor, was always my favorite event of the weekend. The Burger Bash is also a Festival highlight for me and I can’t wait to see how they will expand on it in 2012.” Fans of brunch or Michael Schwartz, owner of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink located in Miami’s Design District, will not want to miss the Farm to Table Brunch which will be set in the beautiful newly renovated Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Schwartz hosts this event with top chefs from all over the country serving a dazzling menu including a seafood main course that will come directly from the nearest fishing boat. Speaking of boats, Chef Douglas Rodriguez and Food Network star Aarón Sanchez will be hosting Salsa @ Sea aboard The Biscayne Lady. Hop on the Festival’s Party Boat for Brunch at Sea that will combine the vibrant Cuban cuisine of Chef Douglas Rodriguez, known as The Godfather of Nuevo Latino Cuisine, with the Mexicaninspired style of Food Network star Aarón Sanchez, who is executive chef and part-owner of the New York City restaurant Centrico. This Brunch at Sea will be a swinging salsa affair mixed with brunch-style foods, Diplomatico Rum and Montecristo Cigars. Joining the two Latino Heavyweights, Rodriguez and Sanchez, will be guest chefs Timon Balloo and Pichet Ong. The 2012 Festival schedule is overstuffed with tasty choices like Conscious Bite Out with Geoffrey Zakarian
at The Sacred Space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. Zakarian, an accomplished chef who has presided over some of the country’s top kitchens, is featured as a recurring judge on Food Network’s Chopped. Other Festival events not to be missed include the Interactive Lunch hosted by Ann Burrell, the Dolce Lunch hosted by Charles Phan at the Setai, the Godiva Chocolate Bar: Exclusive Pairing of Chocolates and Cocktails, Momofuku Milk Bar Desserts with Christina Tosi and Andrea Robinson, Thrillist’s BBQ & The Blues hosted by Michael Symon at the Eden Rock and the Interactive Dinner with The Neelys. One of the most popular and well-known events of the Festival is the Whole Foods Grand Tasting Village on Saturday and Sunday. The Tasting Village serves up a smorgasbord of bold cuisine paired with excellent wines, and specially crafted spirits. The Winebow Wine Pavilion features selections from the world’s finest wineries and spirits producers. Giant white tents set up on the sand of Miami Beach feature wine and culinary delights as well as an arena for demonstrations. KitchenAid Culinary Demonstrations feature the rock stars of the culinary world on stage. Attendees will have the opportunity to see some of their favorite chefs, authors, and culinary personalities like Paula Deen, Emeril Lagasse, and Guy Fier in 45-minute segments. Closing the Festival this year is Trucks on the Beach, an exciting collaboration of Miami’s top food carts and trucks. This new event is taking its cue from the recent
food cart & truck trend sweeping the nation. Travel Channel’s Andrew Zimmern will host and celebrate the street food scene under the white tent behind the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Trucks on the Beach will feature a combination of bizarre and not-so-bizarre truck foods along with whimsical wines and classic cocktails. “Michael White of the Alta Marea group in NYC and Michelle Geyer of The Salty Tart in Minneapolis will be joining me in my truck,” says Zimmern. “I am also doing a demo of exotic street foods from around the world (chicken, octopus and shrimp recipes) that includes a short seminar on the ethical implications of eating commodity chicken and why alternative proteins can save our planet.” Guests will be able to enjoy a moveable feast from trucks like The Baketress, Big Gay Ice Cream, CUBANCUBE, C&S Brisket Bus, Dim Ssam a Gogo, Mangia Mia, The Rolling Stove, and Wicked Witches. The 2012 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by FOOD & WINE is a wine and culinary extravaganza not to be missed. The event takes place February 23-26 and for a complete listing of events, ticket prices, and celebrities visit their website at www. sobefest.com. Live from New York, it’s a hot mess! Buzz-worthy newcomer Lana Del Rey recently made her television debut as the musical guest on the legendary hit show Saturday Night Live. In the past, the coveted guest spot has catapulted unknown artists out of obscurity and into the mainstream spotlight practically overnight. Until Adele’s appearance on the show last year she was barely heard of outside of the U.K. Now she’s out-selling Lady Gaga and making us wish the bitch DID have it all. Unfortunately (for us), some artists haven’t been so lucky. In the past, bad sound engineering and technical difficulties during the live show have left otherwise soaring careers circling the drain. Now it looks like Del Rey could be the latest victim of the SNL slaughter. Ever since the singer appeared on the January 14th episode, critics and bloggers have been bashing her for being “nervous and vocally shaky.” And that was one of the nicer comments. What’s worse is this disastrous debut comes just two weeks before her new album Born To Die is set to hit stores worldwide. Could the hipstress’s less-than-stellar performance affect her upcoming album release? Lana Del Rey was actually born Elizabeth Grant in New York City and raised in Lake Placid. Growing up so close to the city that never sleeps, it was only a matter of time until she caught the music bug and released her first 3-track EP. ‘Kill Kill’ dropped in October of ’08 under the alias, Lizzy Grant. A full-length album followed just two years later, oddly titled Lana Del Rey. Both the EP and album went virtually unnoticed until June of last year when the 25 year-old signed with Stranger Records and Lana Del Rey (the artist) was born. Her first single, “Video Games,” created such a cyber-buzz that it eventually caught the attention of Intersope record execs who didn’t waste any time locking her into a deal to produce Born To Die. Lana’s music has been described by many as “gangsta Nancy Sinatra.” After giving her self-titled EP a listen, I wouldn’t say there’s anything “gangsta” about her. Although, I could definitely hear a hint of old blue eyes’ baby girl. Slow and somber isn’t really my speed. But I will definitely be chillin’ to Miss Del Rey with a bottle of Malbec after a long day. So before you completely shut her down because of that tragic SNL train wreck, check out some of her studio tracks. Because as we all know, some of the biggest names in music couldn’t sing live to SAVE their lives. If you’re a recording artist, musician, DJ or producer and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at Alfredo@wireweekly.com

FLIX THE TOP 10 FILMS OF 2011
BY ALYN DARNAY
It’s that time of year again, the time it falls to us reviewers to select the best films of the past year. Most of the time I really enjoy this part of the job, picking through the 200 plus films I saw and wrote about during the year, but this year, not so. 2011 has been a very lean year in terms of great films, perhaps the worst in the past decade. The thrills were few and far between, the dramas overwrought, the comedies lame, the supernaturals mundane and predictable, and the children’s offerings less than films. If you’re not getting the message here, I thought it wasn’t a very good year for film. But there were some, few as they were, true joys in the movie theaters. Enough inspired pieces of creative work for me to pick the outstanding ones and grace them with the title of best of the year. So here they are starting with the best. DRIVE Director Nicholas Winding Refn treated us to a re-envisioning of the noir genre with this tale of protection and revenge on the fringes of life in Los Angeles. Add to that Ryan Gosling’s brooding performance and Albert Brooks’ award-deserving turn as the Bad Guy and you have one powerhouse of a movie. Best Picture of the Year.
MONEYBALL Playing Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane, Brad Pitt turns in a totally believable and finely crafted performance. However, it’s Jonah Hill’s straight turn with some of the year’s best lines that make the film such a funny, and touching film.
LIMITLESS This film came out of nowhere and gave us a new anti-hero. Never predictable, the twists and turns never took us where we thought we were going, and Bradley Cooper’s performance was stunningly wonderful.
CEDAR RAPIDS From director Miguel Arteta, comes this entertaining white-collar comedy in the style of Fargo. Ed Helms is a pure painful delight showing us the true nature of small town mentality.
MY WEEK WITH MARILYN I liked everything about this movie. It’s a supposedly true story of a film assistant’s dalliance with Marilyn Monroe, during the filming of the movie The Prince and the Showgirl. 4 ALBERT NOBBS Glenn Close - Best Performance by an actress in the last ten years. A must-see tour-de-force. Based upon a play, it’s not the best film around but you won’t notice, because you’re there with Mr. Nobbs. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEADLY HALLOWS 2 Finally, the definitive Potter Film. A glorious finale to the epic series, with everything you ever wanted from Harry’s movies. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS Woody Allen being romantic about that period in Paris when all the great writers, artists, actors roamed the streets. It’s like savoring a fine wine. 18 | wire magazine | issue #3, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter
BRIDESMAIDS This was the film that made me laugh the most this year. It’s sort of a Hangover for the girls. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and the crew show us just how funny women can be as they capture the challenges of friendship and competition in female relationships. Great comedy. Great film. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL Tom Cruise, an exploding Kremlin, the world’s tallest building, a blinding sandstorm, a 60 foot car dive, tech stuff up the wazoo; what more could anyone want from an action adventure film? BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK (Best Documentary of 2011) Bill is an American Treasure who has spent his whole life on the streets of the Big Apple capturing and creating fashion trends on film. This doc brilliantly captures the true essence of the man and is a constant joy to watch. You need to see it.

DINING
A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE LOVED BY CELEBRITIES What do celebrities and movers & shakers such as Ricky Martin, Kathy Griffin, Tobey McGuire, Halle Berry, Charles Barkley, Donna Shalala, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Collin Farrell, and Miss Universe Barbara Palacios have in common? They all like to shake their bon bon! Just kidding… They all love dining at Pasha’s Healthy Mediterranean Cuisine. In last week’s issue model John Pizzo told us that a healthy diet is half of his secret for having a magnificent body. “Staying in shape is certainly a combination of training and dieting. Many people don’t realize that proper nutrition is half the battle. You can’t get great abs just by doing a thousand crunches yet making no changes to your diet.” That can be a challenge in today’s fast-paced modern lifestyle environment where we are always on the go. Especially because we tend to eat out a lot and, often times, we just don’t know what’s really in our food. This is where Pasha’s comes in. Their healthy fast casual food is a great alternative for those of us aspiring to look good and feel good. Last Thursday I caught up with Antonio Ellek, Pasha’s Co-founder and CEO, to find out what makes Pasha’s food so healthy. “The food we serve at Pasha’s is genuine healthy food! It is all 100% natural, with no trans fats, no additives, no preservatives, no MSG, no microwaves. Our chefs worked with nutritionists to lower the oils, salt (sodium), and sugar in all our menu items, and we offer many vegan, gluten free, and low calorie items.” Antonio also noted that Channel 10 recently did a report on Pasha’s Brickell Avenue location, which is one of only two restaurants in the area with a perfect score in cleanliness and food safety. “Pasha’s prepares almost all its food from scratch... the bread, the soups, the stews, the desserts. We utilize the finest ingredients, buying locally as much as possible. We are one of the rare places offering ALL juices freshly squeezed with no sugar added. Our smoothies are prepared from real fruits with no paste or syrup fillers. Pasha’s food is customized and prepared upon request when customers place their orders. We have no mystery ingredients. For example, ALL our chicken menu items are 100-percent chicken breast. That is why it is no surprise that 50-percent of Pasha’s customers dine with us at least once a week. Many customers 3 to 5 times a week, and we particularly attract trainers, sports athletes, models, actors, fitness enthusiasts, doctors, nurses, and people who enjoy a healthy lifestyle.” Antonio also shared with me that an increasing number of customers have been losing significant weight by eating at Pasha’s more regularly without having to change their lifestyles. That is one of the reasons Pasha’s opened locations at the University of Miami Medical Wellness Center and at the Spa of the Sports Club LA at the Four Seasons. Stop by www.pashas.com to find the location nearest you. Visit www.wireweekly.com/dining for more information about this and other great Wired Dining destinations.
