PICK A TRICK THIS VALENTINE’S DAY! Like so many others, Facebook has become one of those habits that I just can’t seem to break. I just can’t wait to see which pair of heels my friend Lillia has picked out for the day, if Tim’s boss is being a jerk today, or if Bill and Kareem are going to have a dramatic blowout in front of 3,000 of their closest Facebook friends. Needless to say, I love, love, love seeing it all. But over the past few days, I have some regular status updates, where a number of my friends are either angry about the arrival of Valentine’s Day or depressed that they have no one to spend one of the most romantic holidays of the year with. This was made evident this morning, as I enjoyed my morning Nespresso and Facebook perusal, and stumbled across a friend’s status update stating, “all this Valentine’s Day crap is making me throw up a little in my mouth.” As someone who has spent nearly 26 years single on Valentine’s Day, I can totally relate; however, I have never gotten upset or depressed about it. Instead, I went out and found someone special, aka a trick for the night, to enjoy the holiday with. Just because I was not in a relationship or even dating someone, why shouldn’t I enjoy myself? This is one of the reasons that we feature five of South Florida Hottest Bachelors in our Annual Valentine’s
Day Issue. Each year for the past four years, we sort through hundreds of potential bachelors until we settle on five guys that will certainly give your heart a flutter – or at least a flutter in your pants!
walking billboard of scandalous messages. Let’s just say, it is always a lot of fun, and we look forward to seeing you there. I want to close this week’s column with a picture of the fabulous Jennifer Coolidge, who was recently partying it up at TWIST. Seems Stifler’s mother and Elle Woods’ white trash confidant just can’t get enough of the boys at TWIST. Check it out!
This year, we feature five adorable guys in South Florida, who aren’t just good looking; they also have all the qualities of the ideal boyfriend. Our bachelors: Carlos Castro, Javier Hernandez, Peter Gonzalez, Jared LeBlanc, and Jose Cano are all smart, cute, sexy, ambitious, and, of course, a lot of fun.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
And for the past four years, each of our bachelors have joined us at MOVA, formerly known as Halo, for our Annual Bachelor Party, so everyone can get the chance to mix and mingle with a few of South Florida’s finest. This Friday night, we will be hosting our Annual Bachelor Party at MOVA, beginning at 9 p.m. Of course, our five bachelors will be there, but so will hundreds of delicious singles, looking for that special someone to spend Valentine’s Day with, which is why we will also be hosting Pick a Trick. Partygoers will all be able to inconspicuously send messages back and forth between each other, giving people a chance to break the ice without actually having to go through that awkward first moment. Of course, as the night progresses and the free-flowing libations take center stage, MOVA will turn into a

WHAT IS MAYOR ALVAREZ AFRAID OF? HIMSELF? Our great democracy allows citizen voters to elect the politicians they think would do the best job running their local, state, and national government. Our democratic system also allows voters to either re-elect those same politicians, or vote them out of office when they govern at the expense of the people and taxpayers, and forget the famous words of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg address: "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Unfortunately, waiting for an election to vote someone out of office may take too long and cause too much damage to the people or the office held by a given individual. For this reason, our political system has other democratic processes such as impeachment or recalls to replace politicians a majority of the voters no longer want. Richard Nixon is the most famous example in recent memory. He was forced to resign, rather than face impeachment and removal from office.

West Side Miami-Dade voters and taxpayers are now in the middle of an effort to recall Mayor Carlos Alvarez. Alvarez, like Nixon, may not serve his full term in office. The Mayor is facing the real possibility that he will be removed by a majority of the voters fed up with his policies, the way he managed city government, and the property tax rate increases he levied onto taxpayers during the Great Recession. Like Nixon, Alvarez wants to fight tooth and nail to keep his job and refuses to listen to the majority. If the Mayor believed in our democratic process and was confident about his performance on the job, he would welcome a prompt recall vote. Instead, he is using petty legal technicalities to challenge the recall process and how the signatures were collected. WIRE COVER: SOUTH FLORIDA'S HOTTEST BACHELORS
BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY IMAGE1STMIAMI.COM How old are you and where are you from? I'm 28-years old and born on Sept. 3rd, 1982, which makes me a Virgo with Aries rising. I am originally from Cartagena, Colombia. My parents brought me over to Miami when I was two years old and I've lived here ever since. Where do you work and what do you do?
Where do you normally meet guys? For some odd reason, always in New York City. What would your ideal relationship look like? It would look somewhat like Seal and Heidi Klum’s relationship: fun, spicy, and spontaneous. Not take one another so serious and just enjoy life and each other.
I work for South Broward Research and I'm the lead Research Coordinator. I manage a research site, which conducts studies for new state of the art drugs that aren't out yet for different pharmaceutical companies. I've been in the research business for about eight years now and I love it. Seeing patients' health improve in a matter of months on a new drug is a very gratifying feeling, especially when they're coming in and don't have insurance and we're able to help them at no cost.
Describe your ideal guy.
When and how did you come out?
What is the most scandalous thing you've ever done on a date?
I came out at 16. My mom found a fake ID I had, which she found while doing the laundry because stupid me left it in the front pocket of my jeans. That same day she found a local gay magazine I had in my room and then she confronted me and asked me the big questions, “are you gay and is that guy in the ID your boyfriend?” I had no idea who that guy was in the ID. It was just some ID I'd found and was using to get in to clubs. Anyways, it was pretty rough the first couple of years for my mom to accept since I'm an only child. Eventually she came around and now we are best of friends and open with each other.
Going skinny dipping in my neighbor’s pool!
Describe your first kiss? Wet and sloppy! Not so hot. How would you describe a typical first date with you? Not sure if my first dates are so typical... I'm pretty outdoorsy, so I'd want to either go kayaking or bike riding along Key Biscayne and then dinner, possibly ending the night laying out under the stars just talking and sharing our stories and expressing what we want from the future. Now that I say that, it does sound kind of typical. It's all in perspective, I guess. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for someone? Taken them to the beach on New Year’s Day to see the first sunrise of the year together.
My ideal guy is funny with a sarcastic sense of humor. He's smart and witty. He's strong and knows when to take control. He also has a unique sense of style and is very creative. He would be very humble and caring… the type of person that would give the shirt off his back to a homeless person so they can stay warm. He would probably be a mix of A-Rod looks and Anderson Cooper/Andy Cohen personalities.
Do you think it is okay to hook up with someone on the first date? Why or why not? Yes, its 2011 and old rules are meant to be broken. I think it's perfectly ok to hook up on a first date. If the night leads to that point, why not? I believe sex and chemistry are very important in having a relationship, so why not find out if you’re compatible in bed right off the bat. You can talk all you want with someone, but when push comes to shove, if they can’t get you aroused, you’re in trouble. Ultimately, only you can decide for yourself if sleeping with a guy on a first date is a good idea for you and what you want from him after the sex is over. Oh, and don’t be stupid. Use a condom. STDs can take the fun out of brunch the next morning. When it comes to sex, do you prefer soft and sweet or rough and hard? ROUGH AND HARD ALL THE WAY!!! Lights on or lights off? Lights off but candles lit. Do you think a one-night stand can turn into a relationship? No, at least not for me.
What's your idea Valentine's Day gift?
What's in the future for you?
Taking a trip to an exotic location so we can share new memories to last us a lifetime.
Traveling the world!!!

the middle of the night. After spending over 400 hours straight together, we never argued once. Where do you normally meet guys?
By day, I'm a high school physics teacher. I also teach the Barkan method of hot yoga a few times per week in the evenings.
Most guys I've met were just through friends and being social. That's really what I prefer, although I did meet a boyfriend through an online site once, so you never know!
When and how did you come out?
What would your ideal relationship look like?
I started the process when I was about 19 or 20. I didn't come out all at once. I started making a few gay friends in college who invited me to go out with them, which allowed me to test the waters of something I'd felt my entire life since adolescence. Finally, I was able to tell my high school friends and family. It was only a couple years ago that I realized I was finally comfortable being totally honest with anyone I met about being gay. I never did tell my grandparents before they passed away, which I kind of regret.
Simple. I like being spontaneous but I don't usually instigate it, so I like being with someone that motivates me. I'm usually up for anything as long as I have a partner in crime! But ideally, we'd also be able to just enjoy reading books in bed or watching a documentary together. I'm a bit of a science and philosophy guy and an atheist, so it would be great to have someone that gets that side of me too.
Describe your first kiss?
Don't think I should say (laughingly), but nothing too crazy.
My first kiss was with a boy at a summer camp when I was fifteen. At the time, I was incredibly nervous, and it was very intense. Looking back on it, I was a nerdy kid with braces and messy hair, and it all seems a little tragically innocent.
Do you think it is okay to hook up with someone on the first date? Why or why not?
How would you describe a typical first date with you? It really depends on the person. It might be having fun with a group, something outdoors, dinner and a show (not a movie), or a chill, intimate night at his or my place. I don't really like to go on "dates" that much though. Calling it a date carries lots of implications. I generally make much better connections with people just hanging out as friends and letting interest develop from there if it's there. I love being somewhere where we have the opportunity to talk and do something together without there necessarily being any expectations. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for someone? I met a Canadian guy at a French immersion program in Nova Scotia a few years ago. We really hit it off in the first few weeks of the program, and he asked me to drive back with him across Canada when the program finished. It was very spontaneous of me, but I decided to go with him to Montreal. So I switched my plane ticket home and embarked on an18-day road trip through five Canadian provinces. That trip altogether holds some of my most romantic and daring memories, from eating our vegetarian salads on gorgeous mountaintops, camping in the mountains of Quebec, and digging the car out of a cliff-adjacent sand pit in 13 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
What is the most scandalous thing you've ever done on a date?
Hmm, what do you mean by "hookup"? (laughingly). I think it's okay, but not necessary. I've had "hookups" turn into great relationships, but I tend to think that it's better to take things slow. It sends a message to a guy that you’re interested in more than just his looks or body (unless that's all you really are interested in!) I think that part of what causes feelings of love to develop is the waiting. I mean a lot of your feelings happen when you realize that you're thinking about your guy while he's not there. If you put everything out there too quickly, then there nothing left to wonder about. When it comes to sex, do you prefer soft and sweet or rough and hard? Balance is important in everything. I teach yoga after all! What's in the future for you? Big things I hope! I'm teaching at a great school right now, but I've got several ideas for future endeavors. Going back to school is one possibility for a Ph.D. or Ed.L.D. (Doctor of Educational Leadership). I have several ideas on education that I'd like to see tested and maybe implemented either through government or starting my own school one day.
WIRE COVER: SOUTH FLORIDA'S HOTTEST BACHELORS
BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY IMAGE1STMIAMI.COM How old are you and where are you from?
What would your ideal relationship look like?
I’m 27 years old and I’m from Miami.
Balanced, simple, and above anything else, happy. I think you should be in a relationship with someone for as long as you can make each other happy.
Where do you work and what do you do? I work as a public relations account executive in an integrated marketing firm. Being in PR means you’re always moving. I have an array of clients and work in the entertainment, corporate, and consumer public relations fields. Every day is different and that’s what I love about my job. The hours are long, but sometimes the perks are great too. I think one of the most exciting times was when I met Johnny Depp in person, and it was thanks to my job. When and how did you come out? I came out when I was 16. Part of the reason I came out was because of my first boyfriend. Describe your first kiss? My first kiss was very innocent. I was about ten years old and didn't really know exactly what I was doing, but it felt natural. How would you describe a typical first date with you?
Describe your ideal guy. The kind of guy that I’m attracted to is easy-going and laid back. I can be kindof crazy, so someone that balances me would be great. I find a guy that shows humility very endearing. I usually don’t have a physical type, but I’m attracted to a guy’s guy! However, I’m a sucker for a tall guy. The kind of style I find attractive is a guy that owns it. Everyone is entitled to dress how they would like, but what makes it attractive is how he carries himself. A t-shirt and jeans guy isn’t bad either. I’m attracted to guys that are independent, driven, and ambitious, but who can also handle a work-life balance. What is the most scandalous thing you've ever done on a date? Probably gone skinny-dipping. It was fun and liberating. Do you think it is okay to hook up with someone on the first date? Why or why not?
I’m a pretty easy-going kind of guy. A typical first date would be one where you can actually get to know someone. Dinner and drinks seem like a no-brainer.
I think to each his own. I have friend’s that have hooked up on a first date and have had lasting relationships.
What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for someone?
When it comes to sex, do you prefer soft and sweet or rough and hard?
I think one of the most romantic things I have done was for one of my exes. When we first started dating he bought us rings that had two lines that went around them, which he said symbolized how, although we’re not always together, we’re always parallel. At the time I wanted to puke, but I thought it was a cute gesture. So for our one year anniversary, I bought a nicer version of the rings and had them engraved. Mine had his name and his had mine. He loved it! What's your idea Valentine's Day gift? I’m not really a gift-oriented kind of guy. I feel that if you feel like giving something to someone, it can be for any occasion or none at all. A great gift would be something you and the other person can enjoy together. Nothing fancy, just thoughtful. Where do you normally meet guys? Most of the times that I have met people it has been while just being out-and-about at a bar or club. 14 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
Ha! I think it’s all relative. A little bit of both is fun. Lights on or lights off? Both… does daylight count?...ha! Do you think a one-night stand can turn into a relationship? Sure, if you have a connection with someone it can work. What's in the future for you? It’s been a great year thus far. I have had the opportunity to travel and I have met great people along the way. Right now I’m very focused on my career. I don’t know what’s to come, but that’s what kind of makes it exciting.
WIRE COVER: SOUTH FLORIDA'S HOTTEST BACHELORS
BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY IMAGE1STMIAMI.COM How old are you and where are you from?
Where do you normally meet guys?
I am 40-years old and from Venezuela. I moved here in 1999, and I love this place.
I meet guys in a variety of places. I love to meet guys on the beach, and The Palace is always great. Of course, I get to meet a lot of people while I am working, so I have met guys there as well.
Where do you work and what do you do? As of now, I run my own business and work for myself. My company is called Independent Property Care, IPC, which I opened in 2005. There are a number of large property management companies, but we are different in that we actually manage individual units, not the whole building. Our target market is really the people who have a second home, and don’t spend a lot of time in their home in Miami. We take care of all their property needs and give them a piece of mind that someone is constantly looking out for their property while they are here or away. When and how did you come out? Well, I actually came out three or four times. The first time was when I was 18-years old. I was out on the scene for about a year and a half then went back to being straight for a year then back to being gay for a couple years. By the time I was 26, I decided that I was gay and was most definitely not straight. Describe your first kiss? It was with someone that I had met in a mall. He was probably six years older than me. It wasn’t anything too exciting. How would you describe a typical first date with you? Well if you call it a first date, it’s not a sexual thing, so it is probably the usual type of first date… coffee, dinner, or cocktails. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for someone? The most romantic thing I can remember actually happened last year. I sent over a car service to pick up my date from their house and take them to a hotel, where I had a private dinner waiting for us on a beautiful terrace. We had champagne, great food, and a lot of wine. It was an amazing night. 15 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
What would your ideal relationship look like? I think an ideal relationship consists of two people who can have fun together, confide in, and enjoy each other. Every relationship has a little drama, and as long as it is just a little, I totally get it. Do you think it is okay to hook up with someone on the first date? Why or why not? Oh yeah! I think if it is meant to be, it is meant to be. Whether you have sex on the first, second, or third date, it doesn’t matter. The chemistry needs to be there no matter when you decide to have sex. When it comes to sex, do you prefer soft and sweet or rough and hard? It depends. It can be a little soft and sweet some times and a little rough and hard when it needs to. Lights on or lights off? I prefer good mood lighting. Do you think a one-night stand can turn into a relationship? Yes. Most definitely. What's in the future for you? Right now my priorities are really focused on my career and growing my business. I believe that relationships have to happen organically. It will come when it comes. I am not the type of person who will push for it.
WIRE COVER: SOUTH FLORIDA'S HOTTEST BACHELORS
BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY IMAGE1STMIAMI.COM How old are you and where are you from? I’m 26 and from Miami, Florida. Where do you work and what do you do? I work for Bank of America. I’m a personal banker and I guess I would describe it as helping people with their financial problems and providing solutions. Basically, I provide financial guidance. You know what? Here’s a nice way of putting it: I’m a financial adviser. When and how did you come out? I told my best friend Cari when I was (counts) 19, but didn’t tell another soul until six years later. I actually started coming out while I was on a study-abroad trip in Prague, focusing on film studies, and I guess I just grew tired of hiding. I was in this amazing city and I wanted to be free, I guess. I wanted to be myself. For once. Funny… there was a guy on the trip that I had a crush on and I basically grew the balls to tell him that I was gay. How did it feel? It felt liberating. I felt proud… happy. I felt happy to actually utter the words. I was no longer hiding. I felt like… and I hate to sound like a cliché, but it truly felt like a weight had been lifted. Is that too cheesy? (laughs) I had never felt happier until that point. Until that moment, I didn’t know what happiness was. The rush of being in a foreign city, having the time of my life, and then coming out… here I go with clichés again… it was the icing on the cake. Coming out added to the surrealness and magic of the experience. Is surrealness a word? I’m a cliché who makes up words. Nice! How would you describe a typical first date with you? Enlightening, because it’s a period of “discovery.” I like to talk, get to know people, feel them out. I guess I like to see if we both feel comfortable around one another. Of course, I rarely feel comfortable. I like to keep it simple. I basically like to walk around and talk, or if I don’t keep it simple, then I like to do something fun, unusual yet still be able to enjoy my time with that person and be able to get to know them. For example, go to the Seaquarium or take a bike ride along the bay.
Grindr. (laughs) NO, that’s not true. Honestly, through mutual friends. They’re usually the best references. I’m usually introduced by a friend, who starts playing wingman, and voila: I start being awkward with someone I’m attracted to. The good thing is that they come with references. That’s always a plus. What would your ideal relationship look like? Me on the couch, and him cooking – or vice-versa, it doesn’t matter – enjoying the tranquility and comfort of each other’s company. Just lounging around. Honestly, not that specific, but the idea of hanging around your house and knowing that that special someone is just around the corner, living life and living it with you, sharing it, and making all those little idiosyncrasies worthwhile, important. Having those little quirks make you care about the person more, make you appreciate them, and, in turn, you’re bond strengthens. It’s the same idea of how you grow comfortable with your family because you live with them, and you eventually become one – at least in my experience. Describe your ideal guy. Hmm… he looks like… who’s that guy from “True Blood,” the werewolf? I’d have to look it up on imdb.com. Well, anyway. That’s him. (laughs) Someone like Daniel Cape, one of your bachelors last year. (laughs) He was my stylist for your photo shoot. His style would be a mix of Tom Ford and Justin Timberlake. Do you think it is okay to hook up with someone on the first date? Why or why not? No, unless you know there’s no future. I wouldn’t hook up with someone on a first date, because if I feel there’s some sort of connection, the first date wouldn’t be about that. It would be about getting to know that one person, rather than about sex, ‘cause initially, what I’m there for is to find someone that I can connect to and communicate with on a verbal and emotional level. If there is NO future and, as long as we’re both safe, why not? When it comes to sex, do you prefer soft and sweet or rough and hard? It depends. I’m not going to say both, but since I have to choose both, it would be rough and hard. (laughs) Lights on or lights off?
What's your ideal Valentine's Day gift?
Dimmed. I mean, c’mon…I wanna be able to see the dude.
Companionship. That trumps anything tangible. I’m not talking friendship, even though that’s great, but when it comes to Valentine’s, you think of love. To me, sharing something – whether it’s an experience or something like that – with that special someone validates the true meaning of that occasion.
What's in the future for you?
Where do you normally meet guys? (be honest!) 16 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
Um… Happiness. One of my favorite quotes is “Happiness is only real when shared.” I feel if I can get to that point then I’ve accomplished it all. I want to be successful, but if I have no one there to revel in – and with – then all the success in the world wouldn’t mean much. It would’ve all been in vain.

TOP TRAX: THE FEMMES OF FORTITUDE: THREE DECADES OF DIVAS COME TOGETHER FOR A CAUSE
e all have hurdles to overcome and struggles to endure. But no matter what our barriers may be, the key to overcoming them comes down to one word: Fortitude. The dictionary defines fortitude as “strength of mind in the face of pain or adversity.” Next weekend, FORTitude will be defined as a series of events to benefit amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research), The Pride Center at Equality Park and the Fort Lauderdale-Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals. Besides brunches, films, comedy shows, and pool parties, FORTitude Weekend will be hosting a live concert featuring THREE of the most celebrated divas of dance music! She continued to demand the dance floor’s attention for over a decade with uberhits "Prove Your Love", "Don't Rush Me", and “Planet Love” (just to name a few). When she wasn’t making us dance, she stole our hearts with ballads like “Love Will Lead You back” and ‘I’ll Always Love You,” and inspired us with the theme song to the 2010 Gay Games “Facing a Miracle.” Besides touring the world with her live concerts, Taylor also made her mark on Broadway in Elton John’s hit musical, Aida. If you’ve never heard her flawless vocals live, now’s your chance!
MARTHA WASH One of the most unmistakable voices in music history belongs to the legendary Martha Wash. As half of the 80s duo, The Weather Girls, she flooded dance floors around the world with the #1 smash “It’s Raining Men.” She made her grand return to dance music in the 90s as the voice behind C+C Music Factory and Black Box, earning her three more #1s with “Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),” “Strike It Up,” and “Everybody, Everybody.” This weekend the divine Miss Wash will reprise her classic anthems and gives us a taste of what’s yet to come.
DEBORAH COX Just the sound of her name brings back memories of packed dance floors, sold-out shows, and, of course, big gay anthems! Deborah Cox debuted in the mid-90s with R&B/Pop trax like "Who Do U Love?" and "Where Do We Go from Here.” But it wasn’t until "Things Just Ain't the Same" hit the clubs that we realized she was something different. Deborah became one of the hottest dance divas in the world, scoring nine #1 hits on Billboard. Her biggest track, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here," still holds the record for the longest running #1 R&B single (14 weeks). Her new single is set to drop in March, as she gets ready to play her part as Josephine Baker in the Broadway musical “The Story of Josephine Baker”.
All three of these amazing (and very busy) women were gracious enough to take the time to share what FORTitude means to them and what it means to be a part of such an amazing event.
a strong will to follow my creative impulse in this industry.
MW: Just know that there is support. Be it family or friends, there's always someone to talk to about your situation. Just reach out. You are not alone.
What exciting things have you been doing lately? TD: I’m preparing for a trip to Africa and setting up tour dates for Ft. Lauderdale and New Orleans. MW: I just finished doing a show in Canada and now I'm in the studio finishing up my new CD. My new single "I've Got You" will be out before the summer. DC: I just did a surprise performance on the Allure of the Seas for over 5,000 screaming fans. I've also been focusing on family, traveling overseas, recording, and preparing to return to Broadway. How have you managed to keep your fortitude despite the ever-changing music industry? TD: Perseverance and by having a strong desire and 18 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
MW: I believe it’s just perseverance. I just try and do as much as possible to stay connected with my fans, either through Facebook or Twitter. Yes, it's really me on there talking to you darlings! I hope you will come out and give from your hearts to support this auspicious occasion. DC: By not allowing the industry to define who I am or what I do. The music industry and trends are always changing, but I will continue to express my individuality and stay true to myself. What advice would you give to anyone out there who is living with AIDS/HIV or dealing with any other adversity in life? TD: I think it’s important to have a strong network of people, the right care, and a positive attitude. The awareness is important, but it isn’t enough, people also have to practice the information that’s out there.
DC: I wouldn't dare try to give advice to anyone living with AIDS/HIV, because I haven't walked in their shoes. However, I believe that it is important for all of us to play our part in being compassionate, understanding, and loving to all especially those facing adversities such as AIDS/HIV.
