THE 37TH FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH 10 DAYS OF EXCELLENT FILMS AND PARTIES

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF37) will be showcasing first-rate films and parties November 4-13, 2022. The line-up of American Indie and International features, documentaries, and short films in a variety of genres will offer something for everyone. The 37th edition of FLIFF will present nine World Premieres, three U.S. Premieres, two North American Premieres, and 18 Southeast Premieres, which are just a few of the Festival’s 157 films. Savor Cinema and Paradigm Cinemas Gateway in Fort Lauderdale, and Cinema Paradiso-Hollywood will show films during the Festival, many including special receptions and guests. Additional FLIFF venues will include Amaturo Theater, AutoNation IMAX, Las Olas Beach Oceanside Park and The Bergeron Green Glades Ranch. According to Gregory von Hausch, President and CEO of FLIFF37, “Although the Festival is only 10 days this year, FLIFF37 packs a punch with more outstanding entertainment, more celebrity and filmmaker guests than ever before, more over-the-top parties, premieres, and Q&As and receptions held at some of the most amazing venues and charming theaters throughout Broward County.”

I sat down with Gregory to learn more about the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Rafa Carvajal: Please provide our readers with a brief preview of this year's Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF37)

Gregory von Hausch: Well, one thing I can tell you, we

return to Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino where we will show the Southeast Premiere of American Dreamer , a comedy starring Peter Dinklage, Shirley McClaine, Matt Dillon, Danny Glover and Kimberly Quinn. It was written by Theodore Melfi (who wrote and directed the three-time Oscar nominated Hidden Figures ), and directed by Paul Dektor. Quinn, Melfi and Dektor will be at the screening, which is followed by The Opening Night Party. Centerpiece is at The Amaturo Theatre (Broward Center) on Thursday, November 10, with the U.S. premiere of my favorite film from the Cannes Film Festival, Ride Above . The director Christian Duguay is flying over from France and will be joined by the film's composer, Michel Cusson. Following the film will be the Centerpiece Reception in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom. Closing is called FLIFF On The Beach at Las Olas Oceanside Park on Saturday, November 12, with an outdoor screening of the surf film Ground Swell , shot on Portugal's majestic Nazare Coast. There will be live music, a crystal clear tent, great food and open bar. The next night is a wild west party with a BBQ at the Bergeron Green Glades Ranch, a country western band, and an outdoor screening of Yellowstone Season 5 Premiere. Dress western!

RC: Highlight three of the top films Festival attendees should definitely watch.

GVH: The top three are always a challenge as each person has their unique tastes. For me, I would say American Dreamer , Ride Above and a toss-up among Corner Office starring Jon Hamm, Novembre in its U.S.

ABOUT BIKTARVY

BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements.

BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine that contains: dofetilide rifampin any other medicines to treat HIV-1

BEFORE TAKING BIKTARVY

Tell your healthcare provider if you: Have or have had any kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis infection. Have any other health problems.

Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if BIKTARVY can harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking BIKTARVY.

Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take:

Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-thecounter medicines, antacids, laxatives, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist.

BIKTARVY and other medicines may a ect each other. Ask your healthcare provider and pharmacist about medicines that interact with BIKTARVY, and ask if it is safe to take BIKTARVY with all your other medicines.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF BIKTARVY

BIKTARVY may cause serious side e ects, including: Those in the “Most Important Information About BIKTARVY” section.

Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that may have been hidden in your body. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY.

Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY.

Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.

Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.

The most common side e ects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%).

These are not all the possible side e ects of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with BIKTARVY.

In this month’s annual URGE Miami Festival special issue, we preview the Festival and all the events. We also interview URGE partner Hilton Wolman and DJs Paulo Fragoso and Marvin Ayy to learn more about the 2022 Festival, which is produced by Luis Morera, Billy Kemp and Hilton Wolman,

and will have a number of the world’s most famous circuit DJs, including Alex Lo, Dan Slater, Edu Quintas, Enrico Meloni, Jerac, Joe Gauthreaux, Marvin Ayy, Mauro Mozart, Paulo Fragoso, Suri and Tom Stephan, performing live at the different parties. This year’s host hotel is the Royal Palm South Beach, with over 400 rooms and more than 25 percent of them suites. Rafa Carvajal: What makes URGE Miami Festival such a popular festival for guests from around the world? Hilton Wolman: While the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is shivering as winter sets in, here in Miami we have wonderful weather. November is one of the months with the lowest rainfall and humidity levels and Thanksgiving marks the end of our hurricane season. There’s no better place to gather for a legendary Beach Party that has become world renowned, and with five additional events we’ve made the URGE Miami Thanksgiving Festival irresistible to travelers by offering a great rate on accommodations and huge discounts on admission for pass holders.

RC: What's new for this year's URGE Miami Festival?

HW: We are excited to have secured the Royal Palm South Beach, one of the area's largest resorts, as our host hotel and site of our Welcome Center and Saturday’s PAPA Pool Party, produced in conjunction with Eliad Cohen. We also welcome back our Spanish partners, Matinee Group, for the Friday night party which takes place at M2, Miami’s newest mega club, fresh from a $10 million renovation with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting installation.

RC: What are you looking forward to the most for the 2022 URGE Miami Festival?

HW: The Festival is a chance to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. My personal favorite event is the Beach Party which once again will be decorated by Kidd Madonny and 3DX with a retro resort feel in our signature yellow and white colors. This year the party features music by Joe Gauthreaux representing the USA.

Miami Beach is fortunate to have two of the world’s largest LGBTQ events take place on the sands of South Beach each year, and we are extremely proud of the level of production and fantastic spirit of cooperation we share.

RC: Is there anything else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

DJ PAULO FRAGOSO Rafa Carvajal: Which URGE Miami Festival party are you deejaying at?

Paulo Fragoso: I’ll be deejaying at the Papa Pool Party on Saturday, November 26th at our Host Hotel Royal Palm in South Beach. They have a great pool area. I’m sure it will be one for the books!

RC: Please describe your deejaying style in three words for our readers.

PF: That’s a really good question, because it took me almost three years to find my own style and be able to put my identity into it! So I would say: upbeat, interactive and dynamic. I like to keep my sets upbeat and fun for the audience. I try not to play songs that are too long or slow because I find that people lose interest if they’re listening to one song for more than five minutes. I also make sure to mix up the genres, based on our House Music, so there’s something for everyone at the event.

RC: What type of sets are you planning for URGE?

PF: URGE PAPA Pool Party is the moment where the attendees will actually hang out and see each other. That’s where they go to dance, sing and have fun by the pool! So I’m working on some classics and mainstream songs that will bring back good memories and create the best vibe possible. Lots of grooves. Then I guess it's kind of routine, I just wait to see the audience to push the envelope as much as possible.

RC: What are you looking forward to the most about deejaying at this year's URGE Miami Festival?

PF: I’m looking forward to making history, to keep its tradition. URGE itself is a very strong brand in the U.S. and all over the world, especially when it comes with another powerful name such as PAPA PARTY. The people behind it are very professional; they are always leveling up their work. For us DJs, that is very important, because we get our names linked up with them. And of course, for a festival with this magnitude, we get to see friends from all over the world!

RC: Why is URGE Miami such a great festival to attend?

PF: I’d say due to URGE’s great reputation, added to the history and tradition of these parties during Thanksgiving weekend in Miami. Last year’s URGE Festival was just amazing. As I was saying before, the people behind URGE have been doing this for years. They know what they are doing. Aside from experiencing well done productions, well known DJs and party brands, not to mention it’s Miami, a good way to get away from the cold weather.

RC: What else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers? In these five years of my DJ career, this is the third one playing this holiday Festival, and I am super excited to come back this year working

MA: I hope that all attendees like my music, the vibe and enjoy the Festival with me as a close friend.

MA: Because the vibe, the energy, and the public of Miami is incredibly charming and what the URGE team is preparing for this year will be an outstanding epic!

RC: What's new at this year's Festival versus previous editions?

GVH: The most obvious are the parties (mentioned above) and WinterFLIFF at Villa de Palma… which unites Winterfest and FLIFF for a huge party. We also have 20 or so receptions at the cinemas (Savor, Gateway, IMAX). Look to see about three times the amount of filmmakers from around the world… and because we shortened the fest from 18 days to 10, we will have more people at the screenings and parties than ever before.

And those people include Jared Harris ( The Crown ) here for his dad's bio doc The Ghost of Richard Harris – as well as Jared's wife, Allegra Riggio, a celeb in her own right. Dylan and Hopper Penn (Sean & Robin's kids) and Zoe Lbeu Sidel (Rosanna Arquette's daughter) with their new film, Signs of Love . Taryn Manning ( Orange Is The New Black ) here with Bobcat Moretti – and Taryn gets our Career Achievement Award.

RC: What are three events that our readers should definitely attend at this year's FLIFF?

GVH: The Opening Night Party has the Jersey Girls performing live. They are beautiful and electrifying, guaranteed to get the audience in the party spirit –leaving the stage and freelancing throughout the crowd. WinterFLIFF at magnificent Villa de Palma, is the 21st Century version of a Great Gatsby party, where the location is one of the stars. And FLIFF on The Beach will be a magnificent capper and a great way to showcase the beauty of Fort Lauderdale to our international guests.

RC: What makes FLIFF such a unique film festival?

GVH: The spontaneity of FLIFF. We try to make everything within the ten days unique and engaging. Chairman Steven Savor will orchestrate all the parties… and no one is better than him thinking out the logistics and what will visually stimulate the crowd – all of which is greatly enhanced with food, spirits and entertainment. And here's a new word for you, Provocativo, which is a Spanish Cava and the Official Bubbly of FLIFF37. As I answer these questions, 1,000 magnums of Provocativo are being delivered to the FLIFF warehouse. Look for it given complimentary throughout FLIFF! From my perspective, it is the eclectic programming we always present. Bonnie and I have an exceptionally fun line-up this year with 40 countries participating.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about this year's FLIFF?

CARE RESOURCE TRIBUTE TO WORLD AIDS DAY HEALING THROUGH THE ARTS

On December 1, 2022, from 7 p.m to 9:30 p.m., Care Resource is hosting a tribute to World AIDS Day with the theme “Healing Through the Arts” on the rooftop of their Midtown Miami Health Center located on 3510 Biscayne Boulevard. The night includes dance performances by the United Ballroom Houses of South Florida, an array of donated and radiant art pieces, poetry readings, a candlelight vigil and more.

This event incorporates four pillars to ending the epidemic that include: diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and response. This tribute is an opportunity to recognize, honor and celebrate the medical advancements made during the past 30 years. According to Steven Santiago, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, “World AIDS Day reminds us that HIV has not gone away. The event's four pillars of diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and response are crucial to increasing awareness, fighting prejudice, and improving education. Diagnosis is a reminder that there are still people living with HIV who are not aware. Prevention is a reminder about the need to further increase methods to reduce the rate of infection. Treatment is a reminder that hope is available for people who do not know their status. The pillar of Response is critical as it is a reminder to the community that new outbreaks are happening all the time.

Observed worldwide on December 1, World AIDS Day is the moment of the year when millions of people come together across the globe to commemorate those who have been lost to HIV, applaud the progress made in responding to the crises, and recommit to ending the epidemic.
