TESTOSTERONE – NATURALLY

TESTOSTERONE
NATURALLY have received many letters recently asking about the benefits of increased testosterone as it relates to fitness. The older we get testosterone production slows down and the body has a decrease in the amount of free testosterone available in the bloodstream. These reduced levels can cause a variety of problems including hair loss, irritability, a reduced libido, and the inability to maintain all of your muscle mass. There are several ways to increase your testosterone levels naturally so that you can look and feel better.
Every Friday things get a little filthy but always stay gorgeous at Score. The hottest Friday dance party in South Beach is hosted by The Penny Back Boyz every week. Get down with the hottest crowd and beats every Friday.
muscle groups to get the maximum effect on your testosterone levels. Instead of doing many repetitions with a low amount of weight, do five repetitions with a weight that is difficult for you to lift. Working large muscles groups by using a heavy workload has been shown to help increase testosterone levels in your body. You can increase your testosterone levels with some very common-sense approaches to health and wellness. First, limit the amount of alcohol you consume. Consuming alcohol makes your body slow down its production of testosterone and other hormones because it is busy processing the alcohol to clear it out of your system. Scientific research shows that if you get more sleep you can raise your testosterone levels. If your levels are low, try changing your sleeping habits to get a better night’s sleep. Following all of these natural methods of increasing your testosterone can raise your levels and make you look and feel better.
Eat the right kinds of foods. Proteins in eggs and whey allow the adrenal glands to keep the levels of testosterone in the body steady. Eating fruits and vegetables can also have a positive effect on the levels of testosterone in your body. Because fat contains enzymes that convert testosterone to estrogen, having a lot of fat on your body increases your chances for developing low testosterone levels. Fruits and vegetables can help you lose fat and develop a stronger immune system. Eating meat can also help you to raise your testosterone levels. And peanuts can raise Ken Hunt is an AFI-certified trainer and testosterone levels better than other foods. fitness expert who owns New York and Miami’s Steel Gym. IGNITES PRIDE ON THE RADIO… AND ON THE DANCEFLOOR
There’s always a lot of HYPE on Fridays as one of the best parties, HYPE Fridays, takes over Mova. Hosted by Edison Farrow and Pussila with beats by DJ Bryan Zero. To add to the HYPE there are $7 Finlandia drink specials all night long.
amed one of the top three dance artists of the decade by Billboard magazine, Kristine W’s latest single pays homage to her musical hero, Donna Summer. “On the Radio,” the third release from her Straight Up with a Twist album (Fly Again Music) is the first jazz recording of Summer’s disco smash. The dreamy loungeready arrangement, cut live in a studio with Kristine and a four-piece brass band, has a funky Latin feel to it. The disco beats and musical accompaniment have been stripped, allowing the spiritually moving lyrics to take center stage while her passionate vocals take the song to a new romantic depth. We sat down with the gay dance floor’s favorite diva as she was preparing for her upcoming Miami Beach Gay Pride performance. Why did you decide to make a jazz version of “On the Radio”? I have been a huge fan of Donna Summer since as long as I can remember. “On The Radio” was especially significant to me because it is about finding your lost love through the radio. For a musician, what’s more romantic than that? Would you say that Donna Summer has influenced your career? Of course! Donna Summer was the first face of dance music. It was called disco back then. We call it house today. But without her contribution, today’s dance floor would not be the same. Can you imagine a world without dance music? Dance music is fun and happy and man, we need it now more than ever. Taking our problems to the dance floor can really help get it through these tough times. What element of celebrating Miami Beach Gay Pride are you looking forward to the most? I have a lot of friends in Miami, and I think just celebrating what a great community it is, and how far Miami has come as a tight-knit gay community. I’m very proud of Miami and having performed there for the last ten years or so, I’ve seen the strides that have been made and that makes my heart happy when I go there. What do you make of the term gay icon? Well, if somebody calls me a gay icon, obviously I’m very flattered. Because to become a gay icon, you have to be pretty damn good at what you do; you have to seriously earn that. When people tell you, “Oh, I’m the Queen of Pop, or I’m the King of this and that,” you really have to earn the gay icon deal, and that’s one of the highest honors, honestly. DINING
BY RAFA CARVAJAL
DINING AT THE NEW FRENCH CHA CHA ROOSTER By now many of you have become very familiar with the Lords South Beach hotel. Some of you may have also dined at its Cha Cha Rooster restaurant, but what you may not know is that the restaurant has been re-launched with an entire new menu under new management by owner Olivier Guichot-Perere and chef Thierry Goulard. Their French names should give you a hint of what the new Cha Cha Rooster may offer you during your next dining adventure. Although you may be familiar with Cha Cha Rooster’s chic, casual ambiance, complemented by bright and inviting yellow and white stripes on the walls, and vintage oversized sized photos paying homage to the original Miami Beach Rooster – the group of eccentric, irreverent women of extremes who, with their bewitching personalities, exceedingly tanned skin and made-up faces, captured everyone’s attention – you may not have yet experienced the new dining escapade the restaurant has to offer. Cha Cha Rooster’s new menu offers you an inventive spin on traditional French favorite dishes, and features light, bright, uncomplicated food, plus delectable signature cocktails at reasonable prices. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner inside, or sitting on the porch at the Lords’ terrace people watching passersby that will surely keep you entertained. To appreciate the new menu, you must get to know owner Olivier and chef Thierry a little bit better. Olivier was born and raised in Paris and spent most of his life exploring its rich culinary world. After moving to the U.S. he opened the restaurant Moulin Rouge in Clearwater, Florida and recently decided to re-open Cha Cha Rooster by reinventing the menu with a French flare. Chef Thierry brings an extraordinary international gastronomic background to Cha Cha Rooster, along with a great personal blend of classic French, bistro French, innovative American, and world cuisines. His experiences include the top kitchens of The Ritz, Lutetia, Meurice, and Le Petit Colombier in Paris, Los Caracoles in Barcelona, Le Cirque and La Bonne Soupe in New York, and Granita and Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in California. This past week I had the opportunity to sample some of chef Thierry’s creations and particularly enjoyed such delights as Creme Brulee de Foie Gras, Diver Scallop Ceviche served with a citrus marinade infused with red pepper, Foie Gras au Torchon served with a pineapple and tomato salsa, Quail Lollipop in a fig infused port wine reduction and creamy Truffle Rissotto (to die for!), Honey Roasted Black Grouper served over sautéed spinach with a champagne and citrus butter emulsion, and Grilled Petite Lamb Chop with a mustard herb crust and Ratatouille with mint jus. So stop by Cha Cha Rooster and enjoy their new menu in the company of friends and family! Visit www.wireweekly.com/dining for more information about this and other great Wired Dining destinations.

GLORIA ESTEFAN: THE QUEEN OF LATIN POP
by DJ FR8-O & Rafa Carvajal Photos provided by Granda Entertainment, LLC ew recording artists can boast the accomplishments, influence and profound effect on fans around the world that Gloria Estefan can. What started 35 years ago as a modest singing gig in a local band called The Miami Latin Boys (later becoming The Miami Sound Machine) has grown into an empire that has sold over 100 million albums and made Gloria THE most successful Latin crossover artist in the world. Her unique style of Latin pop in both English and Spanish has sold out arenas around the globe, earned her three Grammy awards, four Latin Grammys and opened the doors for other Latin artists like Shakira and Ricky Martin to share their voices with a broader audience. Although Miami is the place Gloria has called home for most of her life, her music has always paid tribute to her native Cuba while incorporating the rhythms and beats inspired by other Latin countries. Now the Queen of Latin Pop is back with her first English album in eight years, Miss Little Havana, and currently hosting a gay club tour of the latest single “Hotel Nacional.” South Beach’s very own Score was the first stop on the tour where hundreds of fans got their very first peek at the spectacular music video featuring Puerto Rican drag queen, April Carrión, plus local divas, Erika Norell and Vinna Rouge. While promoting the new album, Gloria also managed to shoot a few scenes for television’s favorite musical, Glee. No word on when the episodes will air yet, but we’ll definitely keep you posted. With such a demanding schedule Gloria was still sweet enough to give us her thoughts on the new album, other upcoming projects and what it’s like to play Santana’s mom.

GLORIA ESTEFAN: THE QUEEN OF LATIN POP Your albums always pay homage to Cuba in one way or another. What aspect of our homeland are you hoping to convey in Miss Little Havana? Little Havana is a section of Miami on and around S.W. 8th Street, below 27th Avenue, which is the first place Cuban immigrants congregated and lived in the early ‘60s. My mom and I lived in a tiny apartment behind the Orange Bowl, while my father was a political prisoner in a Cuban jail after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. My album, Miss Little Havana, is more about my growing up in Miami as a child of the ‘60s and ‘70s and reflects this musically by playing tribute to freestyle, displayed in the title track, disco on “Make Me Say Yes” and different Latin rhythms like the Cuban Conga at the end of “Right Away,” the merengue of the Dominican Republic in “Wepa” and the Colombian Cumbia in “Say Ay” and “So Good.” All these elements are filtered through Pharrell Williams’ urban sensibilities and enhanced by some amazing club dance tracks produced by my husband, Emilio, and some very talented hometown producers like Motiff, Drop and Black Dada who brings elements of his native Haiti in the track, “On.” In essence, the album celebrates the deliciously sensual tropical melting pot that is Miami. Do you have any real-life stories behind any of the songs on the album?
live and experience becomes a part of who you are including, in my case, music. Your latest single “Hotel Nacional” made you the first female artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart and also hit #1 on the Billboard Tropical Airplay Chart and Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs Chart. Did you have any idea the track was going to be such a hit? I’m very happy to see the response that “Hotel Nacional,” “Wepa,” the whole album really, has gotten from both fans and critics. When we were recording it I kept saying to Pharrell that I felt just like I had when we were recording our first English language records, “Primitive Love” and “Let It Loose.” I was excited and happy each day to go to the studio and it was a very creative and enjoyable process! When we did “Hotel Nacional” everyone that had anything to do with it was convinced that it was a very special record. The co-producer and co-writer, Motiff, had used a sample of a decade old song “Hey (Nah Neh Nah)” by some German producers that had a Romanian folk song feel, but we mixed it with live clarinets and saxes in the very swing influenced verses then went to a very trance feeling chorus with synths
and sirens. The mix created two distinct worlds that, to us, sounded fresh yet familiar. The lyrics were fun to write and reminiscent of sexy good times and my favorite thing – finding interesting and unique rhymes for “Hootchie Cootchie,” which were dripping with double entendre. Wire Magazine was there to catch your appearance at Score last month promoting the “Hotel Nacional” video. What made you choose the gay community as your audience for this track? The gay community has always been there for me from the very beginning with “Dr. Beat.” As a matter of fact, Pablo Flores, who remixed that track and most dance singles I’ve ever released was the resident DJ at a gay club called Bachelors in San Juan, Puerto Rico back in 1984. People kept telling us that there was a guy there remixing all our hits (which were in Spanish at the time)
The most personal track on MLH is called “Time Is Ticking” and it closes out the nine Pharrell co-produced tracks. Its lyrics are direct memories that I have of growing up in Miami and it starts as a ballad that transitions to a salsa tinged chorus. It references my feelings on how fast time goes and how everything you

and that we should check him out. Since Emilio and I had just recorded “Dr. Beat” and were looking for someone to do a 12 inch remix, we went to the club to hear him and he blew us away! Since then, all of our big club records have broken in the gay clubs first. I believe the gay community is usually on the cutting edge of fashion, music and entertainment and they find things that are going to break through before they hit the mainstream. They’ve been very loyal to me and I to them as well. Your daughter, Emily, was featured in your video playing the drums. Will she be following in Mami’s footsteps? My daughter, Emily, not only played drums in the video but actually came up with the whole idea to do an extended swing breakdown for the video version of “Hotel Nacional.” She thought it would bring an even more legit feel by bringing in a live drummer, bass and piano players and have Ed Calle, an amazing musician that actually toured with me with Miami Sound Machine early on and wrote the horn charts for the song, come back and add a horn section and clarinet solo to the single. She co-produced it with me and was in the studio every day while we were recording the song and the album. Emily is the best musician in the family! She lives and breathes music and is an amazing drummer and guitar player. Emily also plays piano, bass and has even dabbled in sax and trumpet. She is happiest when she’s playing, but I would never force or cajole her into doing this for a living or as a career. She will make her own decisions, but I can honestly tell you she’s a natural. She’s also very similar to me in that she doesn’t like to be the center of attention, but I got used to it so I’m sure she could as well. In your farewell concert in Miami a few years ago you displayed amazing chemistry with the audience. Any chance this new album might coax you back onto the stage one more time? I’ve always had a very special relationship with my fans, and when I’m on stage, in concert, it’s important for me that they take away much more than simply hearing my songs being played live. This is the time to exchange energies and let them get to know me better as a human being and a performer. My last world tour was in 2004 and since then I haven’t and probably won’t do that again, but I still perform concerts in a different way. Three years ago I did a mini tour of Chile, Peru and Argentina in less than a month. I’m really looking forward to playing live in Brazil, India and the Eastern Block, which I’ve never done, and I sometimes do special concerts in the U.S. like the one I performed with Carole King at Foxwoods. As long as I can, I will continue to perform in some way for the fans although I greatly doubt I would do another world tour. What was it like stepping into an acting role again after so long and onto such a huge show like Glee? What can you tell us about Santana’s mom?

I was very excited to be invited to play Santana’s mom on Glee, especially, since Emily and I are consummate Gleeks! This show has brought back the musical and introduced new generations to some fantastic music they might have otherwise not have heard. Being Hispanic, I also have the opportunity to address Santana’s “coming out” issue in a supportive way since sometimes Latins find it difficult to discuss topics of this nature. The show is a great way to broach the subject in a thoughtful yet entertaining way. I hope I get a scene with Santana’s grandma who was having a tough time dealing with her granddaughter being openly gay. If you had to pick a favorite role on film, which would it be? My favorite film role will always be my first role, playing a teacher on Music of the Heart. The very first scene I ever shot on film was one-on-one on a school bench with the incredible Meryl Streep. She is the most talented and down to earth person I have ever had the privilege of meeting, and watching her act

was a master class for me. She was so generous that she often gave her best performances when the camera was on the other actor for their benefit. It was a life changing experience to be able to work with her and I believe that one will be hard to top. Besides recording, touring, acting and raising a family you’ve been involved in dozens of causes throughout your career and are constantly giving back to the community. Is there a particular cause(s) or organization(s) that is/are on your radar at the moment? Why that one/those? I started The Gloria Estefan Foundation back in 1992 because I wanted to have a vehicle that would maximize my philanthropic potential. It makes me happy to help others and I believe I am on this earth to be of service in whatever way I can be. I try to do it through my music and my foundation allows me to help others that need it, but somehow fall through the cracks. I love to be effective in areas where children are concerned because that way I can effectively make their future a little better. I try to help my community and be there in whatever way I can. Would you consider lending your voice in support of gay issues such as marriage, adoption or suicide prevention? I have lent my voice to countless public service messages through the years. I’ve made a video for the Trevor Project and am honest and forthright when asked my opinion about many issues. I don’t like to preach to people or tell them how to think because I feel that everyone should get informed and make up their own minds in a conscientious way. What would you say has been the highlight of your life thus far? The highlight of my life has and always will be my family! Being able to raise two happy, healthy children, see my son marry a wonderful girl, be there for my mom and sister and Emilio’s family, which is my own, is my most fulfilling accomplishment. Everything else is cream! What’s next for “La Gloria” in the months ahead? The next months will be VERY busy! I am starting on a new reality music show tentatively titled The Star Next Door, which is produced by Queen Latifah. We have been talking about working together on something for years and I am so happy it’s finally happening. I shot the pilot with John Rich, who is an amazing artist and mentor on the show and we have real chemistry. I plan on having a lot of fun with this! I’m also still promoting Miss Little Havana and hope to do some live shows in Brazil before the year is done. I think I am now ready to work even harder because Emily will be starting her last year of high school and wants to go away to college. I have to keep busy or I’ll end up in a fetal position on the floor when my baby finally leaves the nest!

BY DANE STEELE GREEN k, I know what you are thinking: Mozambique? The African one? With the AK-47 on its flag? Are you serious? I was pretty skeptical, myself. Just getting to the country is a thrill (no direct flights from North America). But as distant as it is, and as unlikely as it may seem, Mozambique, on Africa’s southeastern coast, has every reason to be on an LGBT itinerary. After neighboring South Africa, it is the most progressive nation in the region: Antidiscrimination laws protecting gays and lesbians went into effect in 2007, and last year, Minister of Justice Benvinda Levi declared to the UN Human Rights Council that homosexuality is not an offence in Mozambique. Let’s here it for the country with the Russian assault rifle on its flag! And let’s hear it for just how far Mozambique has come. It suffered a devastating civil war from 1977 to 1992, but with the peace came one of those supremely ironic moments: The conflict put a complete kibosh on the unrestricted urban sprawl that uglies so many vacation spots around the globe. Mozambique’s beaches are WHITE, the water BLUE, and the air CLEAR. All three of those capitalized adjectives hit me simultaneously on Quilalea, a private island paradise in the north of the country off the historic Swahili Coast. Styled as a “Robinson Crusoe” eco-boutique retreat and surrounded by the Indian Ocean (the resort catches your meals right off shore), I had to admit there was no trace of a civil war, but scads of pure African civility. As my butler/host helped me set myself up, all I could think was that Mozambique definitely put its finest face forward. Kayaking the mangroves and snorkeling in water so clear I could have been gliding, I could see the allusions to ol’ Crusoe. You come to Quilalea for one purpose only: To get away from it all. There are no telephones, no – gasp – iPod docks, and no maritime traffic; the surrounding waters are part of the Quirimbas Archipelago Marine Sanctuary. If it weren’t for the cliff-top villa, private plunge pool, and hand-set mosaic floor, those “allusions” would have been an outright replica. But at night, as my hosts enchanted me with the local Mozambican mythology, I found I couldn’t have cared less about a dead iPod. Mozambique. Who’da thunk? DANCES WITH WHEELCHAIRS
MUSICAL
CHAIRS Directed by: Susan Seidelman Cast: Leah Pipes E.J. Bonilla Priscilla Lopez Jaime Tirelli Laverne Cox Nelson Landrieu
h, how the critics will hate Musical Chairs! The film is such an obvious attempt to make a politically correct, feel-good flick for everybody, that even the briefest synopsis is enough to make any self-respecting film critic seethe. To wit: Armando (E.J. Bonilla), a young NuYoRican with dance fever, works giving dance lessons and loves Mia (Leah Pipes), another instructor, from afar. When an accident puts Mia in a wheelchair and destroys her dream – to become a star on the glamorous ballroom dancing circuit – Armando sticks with her. In time Armando, Mia and a ragtag band of insistently diverse people who all use wheelchairs make their way into the glamorous world of mixed-ability ballroom dancing. Where they triumph, even if they don’t necessarily win. Isn’t that hateful? So manipulative and clichéd! So calculating and bland! Doesn’t it make you want to beat the creators of Musical Chairs about the head and shoulders with Lars von Trier? No, not really. Because while Musical Chairs isn’t good by any measure, at film’s end one could be forgiven for feeling a bit warm and puddly about it. The film starts out feeling like something you’d see on Lifetime in mid-afternoon, briefly goes to pieces towards the end – but recovers to finish, for want of a better word, strong. Not good, remember, or innovative or sharp or particularly entertaining. Just a little warm and puddly. How do they do it? It’s not the writing. Marty Madden’s screenplay has more formulas working than an algebra textbook. And it’s not Susan Seidelman’s direction. It’s canny and professional and keeps the story moving along, but it’s utterly without texture. It must be the actors who keep Musical Chairs’ artificial heart beating. E.J. Bonilla has 17 | wire magazine | issue #12, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter
great dance moves and smoky ardor; Leah Pipes wrings affecting vulnerability from a grimly formulaic role. Laverne Cox, a transgender actress and advocate, has verve as Chantelle, a transgender person who uses a wheelchair. (Chantelle has nicknamed her bodacious, surgically enhanced breasts “Thelma” and “Louise.” Yeah. It’s like that). Auti Angel is feisty as a riot girl who uses a wheelchair; Morgan Spector is macho and confrontational (and mean, until mixed-ability dance inevitably softens his heart) as a veteran who uses a wheelchair; Nelson Landrieu brings whimsy to Armando’s good-for-nothing uncle Wilfredo. Somehow at the end one doesn’t mind having spent a hundred minutes with these people, even though a solid ninety of those minutes were, let’s be honest, annoying. What’s a critic to say? Movies are magic.

DANCE NOW! MIAMI
Dance NOW!
MIAMI BY JAMES CUBBY PHOTOS BY JENNY ABREU
iami has become a cultural melting pot with a wealth of talent including its dance companies. Dance NOW! Miami, founded by choreographers Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten, is one such company. For the past 15 years, Dance NOW! Miami has produced contemporary modern dancetheater to the delight of audiences worldwide. Next week Dance NOW! Miami brings an encore presentation of “Six Characters” to the stage of the Colony Theatre. Wire Magazine caught up with the two founders/choreographers of Dance NOW! Miami to chat about their company, dance and the upcoming production. Describe the type of dance that audiences should expect to see from Dance Now! Hannah: The audience is in for a treat, they will see everything from contemporary ballet on pointe with classical music to athletic gravity defying modern dance floor work, to a very theatrical piece with live music – a full blown murder mystery! Tell us about your new show and “Six Characters.” Hannah: “Spring to Dance NOW!” has two acts. The first act features three works, two duets both on pointe and both from Diego, although very different from one another. One is an abstract piece called “Mitosis” with elegant and intertwining lifts, the other one, “Paper Walls,” tells the story of a very uptight (and possibly naughty) librarian whose day arranging the stacks is interrupted by an unexpected visitor. The third piece is mine, and it is a series of vignettes inspired by my usually disturbed sleep life. For the second act we are bringing back to the stage the critically acclaimed “Six Characters.” We created this piece last year in collaboration with composer Federico Bonacossa loosely inspired by the famous Italian modernist play Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello. You mentioned that there were gay themes in the piece. Is this unusual for Dance Now! Miami? Diego: I am a gay man but I do not consider myself a gay choreographer. I feel it would limit me. Yet in our repertory we have often worked with same sex partnering and relationships that could have been interpreted sexually. In the case of “Six Characters,” once we created the plot we made a deliberate choice to use gay relationships and characters as the intrinsic part of the story. Bringing this piece to life did create some roadblocks for us; both local and international presenters shied away from bringing “Six Characters” to their communities because of the gay themes.
