ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

GAGA FOR PRIDE In less than two weeks, Miami Beach will be packed with thousands of people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, questioning, or straight to celebrate our community during the 3rd Annual Miami Bach Gay Pride. For a lot of people, Pride represents a time when our community comes together to just let loose and have a great time, while for many others it is a time to celebrate our civil rights movement and our many accomplishments in overcoming GLBT discrimination. For me personally, it is a little bit of both. This year, we have a lot to celebrate! After years of discrimination in the U.S. military, the gay community finally received some comfort in the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. In Florida, thanks to the help of our friends at the ACLU, the ban on gay adoption no longer exists. And if that were not enough, our friends at Equality Florida, the largest GLBT rights organization in the state, has done some amazing work around the state by helping to facilitate the passing of local legislation that protects members of the GLBT community. And beyond legislative change, we have also seen some major changes in the way most Americans view our community. International artists like Lady Gaga and Katy

Perry have not only released songs dedicated to our struggle, but have also stood by us at rallies, protests, and GLBT fundraising events, taking our civil rights movement out of the streets and into the homes of millions of Americans. Of course, it also helps that the most popular show on network television right now focuses on a gay character, who made television history by sharing his first same sex kiss on screen in front of millions of viewers! Needless to say, this was definitely our year in terms of high profile media support and positive GLBT national and state legislation! Keeping this in mind, we decided to dedicate our cover story to someone, who knows first hand what it is like to rise above discrimination and achieve great success. A few years ago, former top news anchor Charles Perez was at the top of his game. He had his own syndicated talk show and worked as a lead anchor for WPLG 10; however, it all came to a crashing halt the day he was allegedly fired for being openly gay. Without skipping a beat, Charles immediately went to work on his first book, Confessions of a Gay Anchorman, in order to share his story with the world. Since then, he has written numerous articles, been featured in an assortment of publications, and has become an outspoken critic of GLBT discrimination in the workplace, specifically as it relates to television journalism.

On top of doing all that, he has also managed to build an amazing relationship with his partner and adopt children! With Pride just around the corner, I couldn’t think of a better time to share Charles’ story with you. It truly demonstrates how we, as a community, can overcome adversity to build beautiful families and enjoy successful careers! In this week’s issue, you will also notice a couple features on two of my favorite drag performers: Lady Bunny and Miss Richfield 1981. Both will be lending their hysterical banter to Miami Beach Gay Pride next week, and I for one cannot wait! Starting on Thursday, April 14th Lady Bunny will officially take over TWIST, performing for hundreds of her little bunny monsters, and on Saturday, she is planning to scandalize Pride, while serving as the queen bee on the TWIST float. As for Miss Richfield 1981, you can expect an amazing show next Friday, April 15th at the Colony! She has some fantastic monologues in the works, and is certainly planning to raunch up Pride as much as possible! Overall, I hope you enjoy this week’s issue as much as we did putting it together! Till next week!

WIRE FEATURE: LADY BUNNY SCANDALIZES MB PRIDE @ TWIST!

BY THOMAS BARKER

I remember the first time I saw Lady Bunny perform at TWIST. While she was singing about peeing in her pants, I was trying to keep from peeing in my pants! Her scandalously dirty banter paired with her latest Top 40 parodies were absolutely hysterical, refreshing, and beyond entertaining. Needless to say, she immediately became one of my favorite drag entertainers! Next weekend, Lady Bunny will return to Miami Beach, and this time, she is taking over TWIST for an entire weekend of debauchery that can only be described as Bunny Madness! On Thursday night, Lady Bunny will hit the stage at 1 a.m., performing a few of her latest parodies. On Saturday, she will scandalize the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, while riding on the TWIST float, alongside Adora, Kitty Meow, Power Infiniti, and some of TWIST’s sexiest bartender studs! After the parade, Miss Bunny will keep the party going at TWIST as she hops on the wheels of steel to spin for hundreds of revelers during TWIST’s Pride T-Dance. If you love Lady Bunny as much as I do, be sure to hop on over to TWIST next weekend. It is sure to be one of the hottest spots during Miami Beach Gay Pride. Check out what Lady Bunny had to say about it all: It’s been a while since we’ve been blessed with a show by the infamous Lady Bunny at TWIST. What has she been up to? I’ve just finished taping Season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag U. And right after Miami, I head to LA, San Diego, and Houston for shows, so this Easter Bunny is hoppin’! Is this your first Miami Beach Gay Pride? What are you most looking forward to? I once performed on the waterfront with Jennifer Hudson at some pride event, and Lordy, did that Christian gal get an earful from Elaine Lancaster and myself in the limo ride home. I understand you will be on the TWIST float. You know the boys on that float are always naked and wild. What can we expect from you? Well you don’t want me to get naked, but I can definitely get as wild as any of those boys. And if those

boys get overheated and decide to molest me, I’ll just view that as a beautiful celebration of gayness and take them all on right there in the street. I’ll “open up” and take in all of South Beach! But seriously, I’m a little scared of those Miami macho men on the TWIST float. Power, Adora, and Kitty are so big and manly! You’ve been making some major waves with your DJ sets. Why did you decide to start spinning as well? I got really sick of pots and pans circuit music, which was being played in every gay club. They call it progressive - to me that shit progressed beyond music with very few vocals, no real instruments, and zero musical sophistication. That’s why I’m really happy to see some real singers like Cee-Lo and Adele topping the charts. Britney, J-Lo, and Rihanna may be pretty, but they can’t sing, and isn’t that what singers are supposed to do? You’ve definitely created some controversy with your scandalously dirty parodies. What have you recently released and what are you working on? I have a perfect one set to the tune of Like A G6 called Like A Cheese Stick. It’s about me hooking up with an uncut Latino guy, so it’s perfect for Miami! And my Ode To Sarah Palin got over 70,000 hits on YouTube. I’d like to think that it was a small step that helped end that idiot’s political career! TWIST has been one hell of a hot spot for celebrities. Katy Perry, Jennifer Coolidge, and Drew Barrymore were all recently partying it up at TWIST. Why do you think TWIST has become so popular with celebs? It’s an institution! But I’m an old school fan of Miami, so I’d be happier so see real Miami celebs like Henrietta, Paloma, and Joanna James! Maybe even Wanda! (OK, maybe that’s going too far!) What do you enjoy most about performing at TWIST? Being paid in heroin. KIDDING! TWIST always has a fun vibe with great music, gorgeous patrons, and redhot dancers. What more could you ask for?

9 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

So you’re also going to be spinning the T Dance after Pride. What can people expect to hear? Every gay classic from I’m Coming Out to Pride (A Deeper Love) to Born This Way, aka Express Yourself. And I love to pull out older circuit hits like Unbreak My Heart, Unspeakable Joy, This Joy Has Liberated Me, and lots of Whitney and Deborah Cox. I just love black female vocalists! But don’t worry, there will be plenty of Katy Perry, Madonna, and other gay icons as well. It’s Gay Pride day, and I want everything from It’s Raining Men to Rihanna. And I do take requests, especially from horse-hung drug dealers! What are you currently working on? I’m working on a new comedy DVD, which will be sold on my website and at live shows. I am also recording some new tunes. Check out Throw Ya Hands Up, my duet with RuPaul from his last album, Champion, on iTunes. Where can people get more information on Lady Bunny? LadyBunny.net or they can like my Facebook page Lady Bunny Forever. Anything else you want Wire readers to know? Yes! Gay Pride is one day per year when we get together to show our strength in numbers. It’s always a blast, but if we really want to see some changes in policy like gay marriage in this country, we need to get together more than once a year. Or else stop whining! Change doesn’t happen on it’s own.

WIRE FEATURE: MISS RICHFIELD 1981 @ THE COLONY

The 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride is set to be even bigger and better this year, as it has seemed to grow beyond the single largest one day event for the gay community to a festival of arts, cultural, dance, and comedy events. Next Friday, the infamous Miss Richfield 1981 will hit the stage at the Colony Theater to perform for hundreds of Pride attendees. Dedicating her life to the friendly citizens and responsible merchants of her hometown, Miss Richfield 1981 is fast becoming one of America’s national treasures. This Midwestern maven is winning over theater and cabaret audiences around the country with an interactive format that combines homespun warmth and edgy improv, leaving audiences in hysterics with a truly original performance. In addition to selling out theaters throughout the country, including venues in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta, Miss R continues to fill theaters in Provincetown five nights a week throughout the summer, and also finds time in her busy schedule to headline for Atlantis Events cruises and resort vacations, the largest LGBT vacation company. After hearing so many wonderful things about Miss R’s shows, I just had to sit down with her to find out why a beauty queen from 30 years ago is still making waves around the country. Check out what she had to say: What are you most looking forward to while performing in Miami? I am super duper excited to visit south Florida, where I’m always a VIP, since I speak English, pay with cash, and have a full set of teeth! While I’m there, I’m hoping to find property for my mother and dad. They’d love to retire in Florida. Of course if I can’t find an affordable option, I’ve suggested that they just drive their home down from Minnesota, since there seems to be ample parking in much of Florida. One of the greatest things about our city are the super hot nearly naked boys walking the streets. How will you be getting their attention while you’re in town? How will I be fending them off is more the question. I find men are fascinated with my natural raven hair, my size 14 feet, and, strangely enough, the small hump on my back. Who can explain what you men find attractive? Have you been to SoBe before? If so, which places are you looking forward to boozing it up and why? Well, I don’t imbibe in alcoholic beverages, because my church pays for my bus fare to Florida, so I’ll probably be grabbing a quick cup of Sanka and a Danish at 7-11, then hit the shops on Lincoln to check on their end of season sales. You may find this hard to believe, but I don’t shop on the sale racks. I wait until the clothes are heaped on tables or in large barrels. That’s when you get the deals. And I am strict about ensuring that all my 10 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

gowns are machine washable, fire-resistant, and made in the Philippines, where the children really know quality stitching. We’ve also got some amazing Cuban food, but most of the people from the Midwest don’t know the difference between a taco and an empanada. What’s your take? Trust me, I know my way around strange, foreign food! In fact, Cuba just happens to be my favorite part of Mexico! Are you a big Salsa fan? Why or why not? Salsa? I simply adore it. But with my gentle constitution, I have to insist that it be mildly spiced with a lovely corn chip! Now, we also get tons of celebs. In fact, Katy Perry and Drew Barrymore were both caught partying it up at SoBe’s longest running gay club, TWIST. Why do you think celebrities flock to South Beach? Hmm, you got me there. You’re not close to Disney World, so I guess it’s not that. What about your lovely weather? I bet that reminds those movie stars of Hollywood. And considering that some of them don’t bother with underwear, I guess it’s important that they stay warm. What should we be expecting at your show? Goodness, I can’t tell you everything right now because I’m not wearing my reading glasses. Just off the top of my head, I’ll be taking a brief trip down memory lane with original music and videos, and then focusing on my high-tech computerized future! But most important – and this is what I love – meeting new friends. I am hoping the homos bring friends from all over. This is the Colony Theater for heaven’s sake! This is legit! Bring your family, neighbors, co-workers, or even your enemies! Everybody’s welcome! What can someone do to get your attention? Throw me bus fare. I don’t have any way of getting home. Aside from that, I always adore a chocolate malted or that salsa you mentioned earlier. You know I eat like a bird – an ostrich! I’m always starving! Anything else you would like Wire Magazine readers to know? I always think it’s best to end with something Biblical, so I’ll throw you a quote from the Jesus that I live by: “It’s important to be nice, but it’s nicer to be important!” MISS RICHFIELD 1981 Friday, April 15 @ 8 p.m. Colony Theater 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach www.missrichfield.com

WIRE COVER: CHARLES PEREZ: CONFESSIONS OF A GAY ANCHORMAN

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY ABEL CRUZ Throughout our childhood, most of us are conditioned to think that it is socially immoral to be gay. Between religious mentoring, peer influence, and the general social stigma associated with the gay lifestyle, we encounter a lot of homophobia as adolescents. As a result, many of us have to overcome our own inner-homophobia and truly “come out” to ourselves before we can come out to others. Unfortunately, things don’t always get better as we get older. LGBT discrimination at the work place is still very prevalent, and a number of gay professionals are sometimes pushed right back in the closet, fearful that they could potentially lose their job or be treated differently due to their sexuality. Someone who knows this very well is former top news anchor and Miami local Charles Perez. In his captivating and revealing autobiography, Charles exposes the shocking truth behind the fear and injustice that followed him throughout his television career. Confessions of a Gay Anchorman is the true story about the personal and professional costs of being openly gay on American TV. Facing relentless discrimination, Charles struggled for years with being forced to go back in the closet while serving an industry where the truth was supposedly absolute. Following his controversial firing from the lead anchor position at WPLG 10 in Miami, Florida, Charles finally

confronts his own tortured past and denounces the industry that cast him aside for being gay. Baring his soul on every page, Charles hopes to inspire readers by simply telling the truth. From the successes of his own daytime talk show to the life-shattering, highly public revelations of his personal struggles, Charle’s revealing life journey echoes the challenges faced by all gay people and serves as a beacon of hope for a new generation aspiring to discover themselves, change the world, and be free to live open and honest lives. “I wanted to stand up and expose the discrimination that exists everyday in this country,” says Charles. “And, hopefully, my life story can serve as inspiration for all those like me seeking the rights they deserve in a nation that prides itself on justice and equality.” Forced to hide in the shadows of his own true self throughout his career, Charles finally steps into the light to share his incredibly moving story of his life on and off TV, no matter the consequences. This Tuesday, April 12th at 7 p.m. Charles will host a book signing and meet-and-greet at Books&Books, 927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach to give readers an opportunity to ask any unanswered questions from his book. In the meantime, we caught up with Charles to ask a few questions of our own. Check out what he had to say:

14 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

Where are you from? I’m a Peruvian/American, born in Los Angeles, raised in South Florida. When did you decide to get into television? By the time I was about 13-years old, I was watching Phil Donahue interview everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to David Kopay (a gay NFL football player) and thought, “I’d like to do that!” What was so appealing about being a television journalist? I’ve always wanted to be where the story is. I never wanted to watch the stories of my time on TV and not be there. I wanted to be in the middle of it. I wanted to see it with my own eyes and report the truth. When you first got into the business, did you feel it was important to stay closeted? I first went on the air as a syndicated talk show host back in ’94. It was before Ellen… before Will & Grace. Before anyone was OUT on the air. It was scary, and I don’t think the company I worked for liked it very much! But, I’d been OUT “on-the-air” in the first season of The Real World, so there was no hiding it.

WIRE COVER: CHARLES PEREZ: CONFESSIONS OF A GAY ANCHORMAN

It’s time to stop withholding the truth. It hurts people. There is no shame in being gay When did you first feel the ramifications of being an openly gay man at the news desk? It’s always been a challenge to be an openly gay man in the television business. Basically, there’s no one at the top that’s broken through the lavender ceiling. There are a lot of out gay men and women on-the-air at the reporter and mid-level anchor positions, but no one at the top. Rachel Maddow at MSNBC is the only one who’s had the courage to be who she is without compromise. Thomas Roberts, also at MSNBC, has recently followed in her shoes, but nothing as far as a main network anchor yet. I think the bigger question is why the industry perpetuates a Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy at the main evening anchor level. It’s time for it to end. What was the most difficult part of the experience? It’s always difficult to lose your dream, whatever it may be, but life is also about reinvention. I used to dream about being a smart, compelling, provocative talk show host. Then, I dreamt about being a smart, compelling, inquisitive reporter and anchor. Now, I dream of being the best husband and father I can be while hopefully making a difference as a gay man. When and what was the final straw? I was fired in August 2009 from Channel 10 here in Miami. It was anything but quiet and low profile! But, to me, it was also about change and finally having the life I wanted. Keith and I got married the following month in Connecticut and, before long, started figuring out how to get around Florida’s ban on gay adoption. I guess you could call my getting fired, “the first straw!” What made you decide to write about your experience and share it with others? I’m a writer, at heart. To me, life is about sharing our experiences and learning from each other. And, as an LGBT community, if we’re to grow, evolve, and finally get to equality, we need to get to the place where we’re truly living out lives, both for ourselves and for each other.

What has been the response to your book? Amazing. I’ve gotten so many messages from people across the country who’ve related to something in the book or been inspired to stand up and be who they are. There are really so many people out there who are just tired of feeling like they can’t live honestly. I think they’re hungry for someone to say, “it’s okay. There is no shame.” What do you hope to accomplish with your book? The book says three things: 1) It’s time to stop withholding the truth. It hurts people. 2) There is no shame in being gay, and 3) Being gay is not a liability and those of us in the media need to stop acting as if it is. How has your life changed since leaving the news desk?

What’s in the future for Charles Perez? Writing. Speaking. Trying to make a difference. You will be hosting a book signing next Tuesday. What will you be talking about? I launched a website, no-shame.org. It’s about erasing the shame associated with being gay. Basically, it’s about taking the “It Gets Better” campaign to the next level. Why not make it better, now? So, if you’re interested in making it better, changing the world, and hearing a tidbit or two from the book, it should be a great night! Where can people get more information on you and your book? You can get the book at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, and at the iBookstore. Also, check out my websites at: charles-perez.com and no-shame. org. On Facebook I’m at Charles Perez and at The No Shame Project. Other than that, you can probably hunt me down on Lincoln Road a couple of days per week.

I feel as if my life has begun again. Personally, being a husband and a father has given me love and home and a sense of future I haven’t had in years. Professionally, I finally feel as if my writing really matters. It’s a great feeling. I understand that you also had to leave the state in order to adopt your daughter. Was that difficult? Yes, but we were willing to do whatever it would take. We got lucky. It happened for us pretty quickly. And, we were able to leave the state for several months to make it happen. Many people, who’d make great parents, don’t have that luxury. The ban on gay adoption basically meant they were out of luck. Thankfully, the law’s been declared unconstitutional, though I’m cautious Governor Rick Scott may find another way to try and re-establish it. We need to stay on our toes. This may not be a done deal, yet. Now that you are back in Florida, how has the community responded to your return? I love South Florida. There aren’t many places I’d really want to live. This is definitely at the top of the list. For me, it’s home. As for how people respond to me, they no longer come up to me and say, “Aren’t you the guy from Channel 10?” Now they come up and say, “Thanks for writing that piece in the Herald!” For me, that’s a great compliment.

TOP TRAX: BRITNEY’S ‘FEMME’ NOT SO FATAL

BY: DJ FR8-O

As far as favorite recording artists go, it’s no secret that Britney doesn’t even make my top 50. But seeing that her new album, “Femme Fatale” dropped last week, I knew I’d be doing my fellow gays a disservice if I didn’t at least give it a listen before completely tearing it apart. After hearing the lead single “Hold It Against Me” back in January with barely enough mouthwash to get the taste of vomit out of my mouth, I was convinced the album was doomed to suffer a fatality of its own. Lucky for B, the follow up track “Till The World Ends” had enough pull to delay my final verdict, at least till I was able to get my hands on the full CD. What happened next was so unexpected; it cost me a few sleepless nights… I kinda liked it. On her 7th album, Britney has once again hooked up with longtime collaborators, Max Martin and Dr. Luke, hoping to recreate the magic of her 2007 comeback album “Blackout”. In some ways she hit the mark. However, it’s the producers (not Britney) who are the real magicians on this project. Somehow these geniuses managed to “MacGyver” Britney’s bubble-gum voice over their sick beats using little more than raw imagination and a few pages from the Auto-Tune owner’s manual. Other than her vocal contributions, you won’t see Britney’s name on any of “Femmes” credits, which is probably why it’s her best work yet. The collection of club-pop tracks opens up with the uber-dance anthem, “Till The World Ends”, setting the tone for what’s quickly become every queen’s new gym buddy. At first, I couldn’t believe Britney’s crew could come up with such a flawless club-ready track until I found out it was co-penned by one of pop’s more original train wrecks, Ke$ha. Why this wasn’t the lead single I’ll never understand. Sadly that honor went to “Hold It Against Me.” The only thing worse than this cheesy homage to the oldest pick-up line in the world is its video; yet, it still managed to debut at #1. “Inside Out” slows down the BPM for a sec, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a ballad. Even though I think this track would sound better with a little more bump behind it, I can see how the topic of break-up sex calls for something a bit more subtle.

just before. It’s not exactly a club-banger, but once the electro/hip-hop beats and repetitious “dum dum dum da da dee dum dum dum” make their way into your eardrums you’ll be hooked. Yet another team of producers teamed up on the funky “Drop Dead Beautiful”-- Benny Blanco, Ammo, JMIKE, and Billboard. As catchy as this song is, I could’ve done without the lame mid-track breakdown by female rapper Sabi. “Steamin’ like a pot full of vegetables”… Really? Luke and Martin come back on “Seal It with a Kiss”, along with Dream Machine, but I wasn’t feelin’ the love. And I think it’s safe to say Britney won’t be taking Fergie’s spot in The Black Eyed Peas anytime soon. Will.I.Am’s cameo track, “Big Fat Bass”, definitely packs the 808, but it could stand to lose a few excess verses of “You can be my bass.” Fraser T. Smith, the songwriter/producer who scribed hits for Adele, Kylie, and Cee-Lo Green, tries his best to bring his golden touch to “Trouble For Me”. The track starts of like a Carrie Underwood throw-away, but makes up for it on the chorus. The album just goes downhill from there with the breathy “Trip To Your Heart”, the unoriginal “Gasoline”, and the sad pseudo-ballad “Criminal.” Martin and Shellback should be locked up and given a rigorous cavity search for even thinking the track deserved a spot in this line-up. Even if you’re not a hardcore Britney worshiper, I recommend checkin’ out the four bonus tracks. As expected, some of them, like “Up N’ Down” really should’ve made the first cut. When asked what her vision was for “Femme Fatale”, Britney answered, “I wanted to make a fierce dance record where each song makes you want to get up and move your body in a different way. That’s what I want from the music I listen to. This record is for the clubs or something you play before you go out at night.” Mission accomplished, B! Except for a few trip ups here and there, most of the tracks on “Femme” are undeniable hands-in-the-air, club-ready anthems. None of these tracks nor the album are going to win any Grammys, but it is what it is and doesn’t try to be anything more than a fun, high-energy collection of party tracks. And in case you were wondering, Brit is set to take “Femme Fatale” on tour this summer.

“I Wanna Go” takes us out of the bedroom and back to the dance floor again, except producers Martin and Shellback decide to take the safe route on this one.

You can catch me working the turntables at The Betsy for its weekly Monday night party Vinyl! Stop by and say hello!

Producers Henrik Jonback and Bloodshy take the wheel for a bit on the bouncy “How I Roll”, giving the album a much-needed break from the Martin-&-Luke-a-thon
