ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

FIERCE PHOTOS AND SCANDALOUS TIMES With a huge smile on my face, I am proud to write that the 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride was a HUGE success. More than 40,000 people came out to celebrate our community and show the world that there truly is power in numbers! Congratulations to The Miami Beach Gay Pride Board of Directors, various Pride committee members, hundreds of Pride volunteers, and, of course, Pride director of operations, the fabulous Cindy Brown, who led the charge in creating one of the sexiest, most successful Pride events in the country. For the past three years, we have dedicated this issue to the incredible images of Miami Beach Gay Pride. Photographers Juan Saco Mironoff and Henry Perez, along with Wire Magazine publisher Rafa Carvajal, were out and about all weekend, snapping shots of Pride revelers for your viewing pleasure. We kick off our Miami Beach Gay Pride Photo Album with photos from the uber-chic Super Hero Soiree and Pride VIP cocktail party at the W Hotel. Celebrities, including Elvis Crespo, Sohanny, Tracy Young, The Real Housewives of Miami, Wilson Cruz, and, of course, Pride Grand Marshal Andy Cohen all took their turns walking down the pink carpet, while the shutterbugs went nuts!

You’ll notice in this particular photo album that Wire Magazine was the official media sponsor of this event! Just check out the picture of yours truly working the pink carpet! Okay, okay… I know it was meant exclusively for celebrities, but a boy can dream, right?! Up next are some fabulous photos from MOVA’s 1st Annual Pride Block Party. Hundreds of revelers packed the street in front of MOVA to move to the beats of DJ Brett Henrichsen, and snag a few Herradura Tequila and Finlandia Vodka cocktails! The next day, more than 40,000 people headed to Ocean Drive to experience the 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade and Expo! I can honestly say that this year’s parade was the best yet. Parade Committee Chair Daniel Spring and his amazing team of volunteers put on a top-notch show that included some over the top floats. Hats off to Score, Discotekka, and especially TWIST for going all out! I loved the performance by Kevin Aviance on 12th and Ocean Drive! It was WILD!

ty, URGE! Presented by Score Productions and Hilton Wolman and featuring DJs Abel, Paolo, J. Felix, and Alex Infiniti, this was one hell of a dance event! Check out the photos to see for yourself! We decided to close this year’s Pride Photo Album with some glamorous pictures of the Leaders, Legends, and Lovelies Ball. Hosted by the Unity Coalition/ Coalicion Unida, the event featured a fantastic silent auction, the new LGBTQ exhibition at the Art Deco Welcome Center, and Legends Dolls, which were created by some of South Florida’s fiercest drag divas! Overall it was an amazing Pride, and I am very happy that I got to be a part of it! Enjoy!

One thing that truly spiced up Pride this year was the new Latin Stage presented by the Palace, Ivan Cano, and Granda Entertainment. The Latin showcase began with Genre Latino’s very own Josue Santiago performing some tropical tunes, followed by some incredible performances by Jayquan, the gorgeous Sohanny, Fedro, and the phenomenal Elvis Crespo! After hitting the streets of Miami Beach, everyone hit the dance floor at Pride’s official late night dance par-

WIRE FEATURE: MIAMI GAY AND LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL “KICK OFF”

BY THOMAS BARKER The 13th Annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF) presented by HBO is here, and you can bet it is going to be one of its best years yet. The festival will showcase more than 50 feature and short films from 15 countries with multiple screenings at the Colony Theatre, Regal Cinemas South Beach, and Coral Gables Art Cinema. The MGLFF brings the best of LGBTQ cinema to South Florida film lovers with a multitude of World, North American, East Coast, and Florida Premieres. “We are truly excited to launch the Festival at the Colony Theatre and to partner with many fantastic venues and business owners,” says Lily Saborit, MGLFF chair. “This festival will entertain, educate, and inspire our community, as Jay W. Jensen inspired generations of students to dream. We have a film for everyone, some deal with difficult and powerful issues and others that touch your heart.” This year’s Festival opens with the North American premiere presentation of KickOff at the historic Colony Theater in Miami Beach, Florida. Written and directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair, the film is an outrageous new comedy about what happens when the meanest team of the Sunday Soccer league comes up against a newly formed gay team and quickly realizes that the men in pink may be more than they can handle. Watch and wince as fledging referee Elton Glixtion struggles to control this testosterone tsunami as rude-boy meets gay-boy in a crazy gun-ho match of five-a-side football (soccer). Of course, no gay man can resist a movie about hot shirtless gay football players!!! We recently caught up with KickOff writer and director Rikki Beadle-Blair to get a behind the scenes look at his film and the upcoming Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Check out what he had to say:

What is the concept of KickOff?

Can you summarize the film for us?

It’s a comedy about a five-a-side football match between a fledgling gay team and the toughest straight team in the league. It’s an ensemble movie that plays in real time.

Cute boys – shirtless in shorts – going at it. What’s not to love?

What was your inspiration for this film?

Finding actors that are not only cute, but can also play ball couldn’t have been easy. How did you do it?

My inspiration was the huge growth in gay football teams in Britain and around the world. I also come from a football-crazy family – so I wanted to make something for them.

I cast my projects first, then I write the scripts. In this case, it was written for actors that I already knew – who are members of my company, Team Angelica – and we’re a sporty bunch! They LOVE football.

Why do you think it is important to showcase the athletic side of the gay community?

Was it difficult finding actors who were willing to play a gay athlete?

I think it’s important to encourage gay people to be out there in the world in every way we can – and anything that makes us strong and healthy is to be celebrated.

When we started workshops, they all wanted to be on the gay team! People know what my work is like and I get emails and Facebook messages every day from actors of all persuasions who are confident that I will write them textured, fulfilling roles regardless of the sexuality. And those are the ones that get cast in projects like this one.

With so many athletes coming out these days, do you think it has become easier for gay athletes to come out? It’s getting better for sure, and there are increasing numbers of role models, but we have a long way to go. There is still only one out gay footballer (In Sweden – He came out last month) and we need a lot more. Where are the gay gold medalists who feel safe enough to come out while they’re at the top of their game? I think this is our decade though. It’s going to explode… it’s in the air.

What are you hoping to accomplish with this film?

Are there any openly gay athletes that have played a role in telling this story?

I understand that you went above and beyond to ensure these boys were in shape. Can you tell me a little about that regimen?

You mean gay actors? Yes. But no pro-athletes. It’s dedicated to Justin Fashanu – a gay football player who came out in the 90s then tragically killed himself.

8 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

It’s my favorite thing to make people smile and think at the same time. I also wanted to make a football film that people who hate sports would enjoy just as much as football fans.

Whew! Twice weekly I would take both teams on a twohour killer circuit around the center of London, using pub-

Of course, hot jocks and sports play right into every gay man’s fantasy. Any steamy scenes we should look forward to? They’re half-naked for the entire movie and there are some sexy moments, yes... but I don’t want to be a party pooper and give too much away... How were you able to break the ice in those scenes? They loved it! I couldn’t keep their hands off each other! How did you get connected with the MGLFF? My TV series ‘Metrosexuality’ played at the festival about nine years ago. I had a ball! I am so thrilled they are showing another one of my films... I think our distributors the mighty Wolfe Releasing hooked us up. What has been the response to the film so far? It’s been amazing. It’s been a big success over here in England – people are really responding to the surprises and the layered characters and relationships. I’ve made three features in the last 18 months, which are touring the festivals and the response is overwhelming. KickOff was the first one (with the lowest budget), so it has a very special place in my heart. I feel so blessed. By the way, people can check out trailers for our other films – ‘FIT’ and ‘Bashment’ – on our teamangelicafilms YouTube channel. What’s in the future for KickOff? It’s been released on DVD in the States by Wolfe later this summer... the sky’s the limit!

TOP TRAX: JESSIE J PEAKS, BEYONCÉ LEAKS, & HOLY GAGA, LOLLA’S TURNING 20!

BY DJ FR8-O

LOLLAPALOOZA TURNS 20

JESSIE J – WHO YOU ARE Yet another Brit has invaded the U.S. She’s got Beyonce’s soul, Rihanna’s attitude, Gaga’s balls, and her name is Jessie J. Her debut album ‘Who You Are’ kicked ass in the U.K. and is getting ready to do the same on our side of the pond. Americans got their first look at the British beauty when she was the special musical guest on the March 12th episode of Saturday Night Live. Now her new single ‘Price Tag’ is shooting up the U.S. charts and making fans wish they were in Jessie’s world. Jessie got her big break a few years back when she was writing tracks for other artists like Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus. She eventually signed with Island Records and released ‘Who You Are’ this past February. The 23-year-old’s fresh new sound and soulful pipes earned her a spot on BBC’s Sound of 2011 list and the coveted Critics’ Choice at the 2011 BRIT Awards. ‘Who You Are’ kicks off with the upbeat ‘Price Tag’. Sounding a lot like fellow Brit, Natasha Beddingfield, Jessie preaches the importance of love over bling with a little help from rapper B.O.B. The beats don’t stop till the live acoustic surprise ‘Big White Room’, proving Jessie’s not just another auto-tune princess. She’s the real deal! The chameleon shows off her R&B colors on the bittersweet ‘Casualty of Love’ only to bust the beats again in ‘Rainbow’ and ‘Who’s Laughing Now’. J gets down and dirty on her debut single ‘Do It Like a Dude’ then pulls another 180 on the Sinatraesque ‘Mamma Knows Best’. The next couple of tracks, ‘Love’ and ‘Stand Up’, with all their flawlessness, seemed to take the optimistic themes to the point of overkill. Thankfully the epic ballad ‘I Need This’ and the title track bring back just enough drama to close out the collection perfectly.

HOLY GAGA! Not even Lady Gaga is safe from the power of the net. Mother Monster had to bump up the release date of her new track ‘Judas’ after it was leaked online. It’s the second single off her upcoming album ‘Born This Way’ set to drop on May 23rd. Needless to say the track, oozing with religious undertones, has gotten a few bible-thumpers’ panties in a twist. Personally I’m just a little disappointed. I’ve always praised Gaga for her daring choices, artistic integrity, and undying support for gay issues, but ‘Judas’ just reminds me too much of a certain other pop diva who once used blasphemy to sell a few records of her own. Not to mention the track doesn’t sound too different from her previous #1, ‘Bad Romance’. I sense another mash-up coming on! Speaking of mash-ups, Gaga also unveiled the cover art for the upcoming album where she’s depicted as a half woman/ half motorcycle creature. Sadly, that didn’t get my motor running either.

PUT A PLUG IN IT That’s right bitches! Beyoncé is finally back! Her upcoming single, ‘Girls (Who Rule the World)’, leaked this week and all I gotta say is DAMN! No doubt this bass-thumping track is gonna rule the clubs once it’s officially released. The album is set to drop in June, but no official word yet on what it will be called. When asked what we can expect, the bootylicious B said: “I’m mixing every type of genre that I love and I’m inspired by every type of genre. I’m not in a box. It’s not R&B. It’s not typical pop. It’s not rock. It’s just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music.” Following up the insane success of her last album ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce’ isn’t going to be easy. But if the first single is any indication of what’s to come, it sounds like Beyoncé is cooking up yet another batch of hits.

In just a few months, the legendary music festival that launched the careers of dozens of alternative music acts, including Lady Gaga, will turn 20! However, despite the anniversary, Lollapalooza didn’t actually run for all 20 years. The festival had a great streak in the early 90s thanks to the popularity of alternative rock, but poor ticket sales forced it to shut down in ’97 until it was revived again in 2003. Lolla started out as a recurring festival touring all over the country with an eclectic collection of artists like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Iced-T, and Nine Inch Nails. Since then, it’s featured more popular bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, The Cure, The Killers, and Rage Against the Machine. What started as a touring festival has become a musical institution known around the world. Besides gathering the best acts in alternative music under one roof, Lollapalooza is a cultural movement and a forum for political and environmental activists to push their causes. But in the end, it’s still mostly about the music. This year Lollapalooza will once again be taking over Grant Park in Chicago and rockin’ the big 2-0 from August 5th – 7th. The lineup has yet to be announced, but they’ve launched an online interactive time capsule commemorating some of the greatest moments in alternative music and pop culture in the last 20 years. Check it out at lollapalooza.com!

WHERE’S FR8-O? You can catch me every Monday night at B Bar inside the Betsy Hotel 1440 Ocean Drive, South Beach. If you’re a recording artist, musician or producer and would like your music featured on TOP TRAX, hit me up at Alfredo@wireweekly.com facebook.com/djfr8o.
