EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE SHOOTING WITH THE BEST & THE OUTRAGEOUS n Monday I visited the photography studio of Image1st Miami (www.image1stmiami.com) for a photo shoot with the infamous Pussila for this and other issues of Wire Magazine. I know Pussila (aka Juan) for her outrageous antics at MOVA and TWIST, but on Monday I got a chance to get to know Juan, the man behind the mask, a little bit better. We shot some amazing photos and video of Pussila, getting ready with makeup and outfits from start to finish. Some of the video will soon be available on the Wire Magazine website, Facebook, and YouTube channel. Monday’s photo shoot had a dual purpose because we also shot quite a bit of video for a reality TV show pilot that, if picked up, will be called Shot in Miami. It will showcase some of the over the top characters who get photographed at Image1st Miami, including Pussila and yours truly. It was fun to be both behind the scenes watching the camera crew shoot the video for the pilot and being in front of the camera talking about why I love working with Image1st Miami, and outrageous personalities like Pussila. In closing, I want to encourage everyone to attend the 14th annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF). As a top media sponsor and supporter of the film festival, this week Wire Magazine brings you our MGLFF special issue. You can also paginate the MGLFF Film Guide online at www.wiremag.co/mglff2012pg brought to you courtesy of Wire Magazine. See you at the movies! TRAINING

TO THE

CORE

very few years someone comes up with something new in the field of exercise and exercise equipment. Whether it’s new stair climbers, elliptical trainers or treadmills; or special tools for firming your abs, thighs or buns. I think you will agree there is always something being promoted as the newest, best answer to all your exercise, weight loss, and toning needs. However, in the last few years, a popular new piece of equipment has made a big impact on the workout scene. You probably have seen them at your gym. It’s the exercise ball and the concept of building and strengthening your core muscles. Your “core” is the central area of your body (within your torso) where all body movement originates – that is why the concept of core training and core workouts can form a basic building block of your exercise routine. With a strong core, everything else is easier. Your core muscles aid in transferring power between your upper and lower body. What kind of core exercises can you do? Here are few easy ones to start.

Waterworks 5.0 @ Discotekka

photos by Henry Perez, Wire Magazine Downtown’s only gay dance party delivers one hell of a shindig every Saturday night. This Saturday was one of the most anticipated parties of the year as Waterworks 5.0 hit the club. Partygoers got down and wet with the most outrageous foam party in Miami.

Getting yourself into a push-up position, on your toes, leaning on your elbows and forearms rather than hands, is called the “plank” position and is a good core exercise. You can also do crunches by leaning your lower back into your exercise ball; knees bent with feet flat on the floor, and then pull your upper torso forward by contracting your abdominals. Again, by using the ball, you also need to bring your obliques into this movement to keep your balance and remain steady – a benefit lost by working out on a floor mat instead of a ball. Another popular exercise is the bridge. Lay flat on your back with your knees bent, arms beside you with palms on the floor. Then raise your hips up into the air, try to make a flat angle of your body from your knees down to your head, and hold them there for about 6-10 seconds. Lower and repeat. Instead of using a flat bench for flies or curls, try using an exercise ball instead. In addition to lifting the weights, you will also have to concentrate on stabilizing yourself on the ball. It’s tough at first, but worth the extra effort. Place the ball between you and a wall. Place your lower back against the ball and push into the wall. Then very slowly bend at the knees until you are in a sitting position. It’s a different take on the traditional squat. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and you have made the movement even more challenging. Remember in addition to working out your lower body, you are also building your core strength. If you are new to core training then start with the ball up against a wall or other object on one side to provide some additional stability. You don’t want to fall off the ball and risk injury. Add one or two core exercises to your workout routine. Within a few weeks you will notice big changes. Ken Hunt is an AFI-certified trainer and fitness expert who owns New York and Miami’s Steel Gym. DAILY GRIND: POLITICS CORRUPTION?

LONDON XXX

SAY IT

AIN’T SO! BY MICHAEL W. SASSER Almost 20 years ago, I remember a very tense lunch on South Beach. I was dining with a prominent local politician with whom I’d had some very public disagreements. I’d arrived forearmed with a little bit of information that I trusted was true but that I couldn’t prove and it involved the transfer of money between individuals in exchange for a particular policy decision. In between the salad course and lunch proper, I purposefully dropped the little bombshell, as casual as one might ask one’s dining companion to pass the salt. BY DANE STEELE GREEN hrow away the bowler hat and screw the tea-drinking etiquette, this summer London is going XXX – the city hosts the 2012 Games of the 30th Olympiad. What, you thought “XXX” suggested something else other than the Roman numeral for 30? And if you haven’t got your tickets yet, get online NOW. Running from July 27 to August 12, it is safe to say the Summer Olympics are set to be the biggest sports event of the year. And while we gay boys readily admit to chomping at the bit waiting to check out the male gymnasts, and if Michael Phelps will do a repeat of that full-body Speedo photo (Oh. My. God.), if you are jetting off to see Team USA kick ass in the city nick-named “The Smoke,” chances are you are seeing just one event. This leaves the rest of London open for games of a different sort. Despite being home to Europe’s largest gay population, London, surprisingly, doesn’t have a declared gay ghetto like Marais in Paris or Schöneberg in Berlin. What this means is that gay bars and clubs are splashed all over the city and, thankfully, within easy reach via the city’s extensive subway system (they call it “the Tube,” feel free to make all the penile puns you want), but to make it easy on the first-timer, the sections of Soho (by day) and Vauxhall (by night) are safe bets to get your gay on with impunity. Old Compton Street, in Soho, is a virtual catwalk of cruising, and a few blocks over are Brewer and Berwick Streets, London’s red-light district. In all the hyper-competitive one-upmanship that dominates London’s gay dancescape, it is a dangerous game to bestow the title of “the best” on any one place. However, to see how the city earned its rep as an infamous, and deafening, party town, Fire, Central Station, and East Bloc are all safe bets, and in the case of the club named G-A-Y, a really safe bet. The same danger goes for the gay barscape, but Barcode Vauxhall and Sweatbox will do you proper. While you are out, keep in mind that many pubs begin to close at the party-pooping hour of 11:30 PM, and that the Tube (hee-hee-hee!) grinds to a halt at midnight and does not start up again until 5:30 AM. However, most clubs keep the party going well into morning, so this may not be an issue. If you must use a taxi, plan for it; London cabs are wildly expensive. Steele Luxury Travel will plan your trip to London “XXX” from soup to nuts! Contact us at 646.688.2274 or visit www.SteeleTravel.com for more information! 10 | wire magazine | issue #17, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

The reaction was hilarious. The official completely freaked out, muttering and gesticulating wildly. What? Corruption? Me? Here on Miami Beach?!? Preposterous! No. Really. It wasn’t the only time I received that kind of reaction. In fact for the better part of two decades that’s been a typical reaction. It’s how politicians generally attempted to minimize the impact of the investigative (and satirical) writing I did on America’s most corrupt small town. Even fellow journalists and publishers at times would question what my occasional investigative cohorts and I came up with. All of a sudden, even a hard-core rationalist like myself was cast as paranoid or delusional. Over time, of course, it turned out that the delusional ones were the politicians who thought their antics so secretive that they couldn’t be uncovered. Delusional were the pie in the sky, government supporting sycophants who really convinced themselves that public policy was conducted honorably in Miami Beach. Nothing illustrates this quite as well as the recent stories about payoffs to city employees. That it involves a nightclub is also no surprise to the politically savvy on the beach – clubs have always been sources of convenient cash to corrupt politicians. In retrospect, the question maybe shouldn’t have been whether or not I and others in the know were paranoid, but instead if we were paranoid enough. Allegations of such rampant corruption illustrate a culture of corruption that obviously permeates City Hall, emanates from the top – and still I don’t think this ineffectual administration is the dirtiest the Beach has had. But the purpose of this column is not to pat myself or anyone else on the back. It’s not an I-told-you-so situation. No, my purpose here is to wake up Miami Beach residents to the fact that the city’s future is in danger because of rampant corruption. My purpose is to assure readers that it isn’t limited to one politician, one official, or one department in the city. It isn’t an isolated incident here or there. Residents need to be mindful of this and they need not to believe that some white knight official is going to root out corruption. It’s endemic, people. Without strong and constant public scrutiny, the political class will mortgage the city’s future. Fire the city manager? Recall a mayor who protects him? All details for the public to decide. But make no mistake. Left to the devices of government oversight and the media, Miami Beach political leaders will continue to manage a city for their benefit – and not for yours. That’s the way it was 20 years ago and that’s the way it is today. It doesn’t take a clownish lunch companion feigning outrage to know it.

KISS MEN TO

UNFIT Chely Wright, one of the first country music stars to publicly come out of the closet, is also featured in the documentary Wish Me Away, presented on the second night of the Festival. The documentary was made from Wright’s intimate video diaries and interviews that followed her struggle and journey to come out. Gilbert, known for his radio shows like “South Beach Dance Party” on Y-100 and “Issues Over the Rainbow,” an LGBT radio show on the New Party 93.1, has been active in the gay community and involved in the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. The opening night party, one of many events during the Festival, will be at The Well, located adjacent to The Forge. Elliot Loves, another film on Castro’s top-five list of favorites, screens on May 4 at Miami Beach Convention Center. Elliot Loves, as the Festival’s Friday Night Spotlight, tells the story of Dominican-American Elliot Ayende in two stages of his life: as a 9-year-old who deals with living with his single mom in the Bronx and as a 21-year old gay male looking for love in New York City. “This is a world premiere with great characters,” says Castro. “The filmmaker and members of the crew will attend and there will be an after-party at Queen Lounge. Another film on Castro’s list is Men to Kiss (Maenner Zum Knushcen), a North American Premiere, directed by Robert Hasfogel, who will attend the Festival. Men To Kiss, playing on April 29 at Regal Cinema South Beach, is a German gay romantic comedy (with English subtitles) with a tale of love, friendship and loyalty. “Girl Trash, a work in progress, is the hottest film for women,” says Castro. Girl Trash: All Night Long is the Women’s Spotlight with a May 2 screening at the Colony

Theatre. Made through Powerup Film’s Filmmaking-Mentorship Program, the work in progress musical comedy is the story of five girls who find sex, drugs and rock and roll all in one night. Naked As We Came, another work in progress, is a world premiere by director Richard LeMay that will screen on May 2 at Regal Cinema South Beach. Naked As We Came, an American film, is a drama about a brother and sister who find their ill mother living with a handsome stranger. “This film is closing the Boston Film Festival,” adds Castro. “The filmmakers and three of the actors will also attend. Cast member Karmine Alers, who recently appeared on Broadway in Rent, will be performing at the after-party.” The after-party will be held at the Red Room at the Shore Club. Leave It On The Floor, directed by Sheldon Larry, has been described as “an audacious, raunchy, and bighearted musical.” This film is dedicated to gay and transgender kids who have been thrown out of their homes. Leave It On The Floor, screening on April 30 at Miami Beach Cinematheque, is a musical romp that begins when Brad, our hunky hero, gets kicked out of his house by his homophobic mom. Brad soon finds a new home and family with the members of The House of Eminence, where he is introduced to the “fabulously funky world of voguing.” Set in downtown Los Angeles, the musical seems a mix between Paris is Burning and Glee with songs by Beyonce’s musical director Kim Burse and her choreographer Frank Gatson Jr. Filled with drama, sex sirens, and butch queens in heels, Leave It On The Floor is enjoyable from the first musical number to the finale. Director Daniel Roby’s Canadian drama Funkytown offers up a flashback to 1976 when disco ruled. Set in

VES ELLIOT LO Montreal, Funkytown tells the story of eight people who hit the club scene with a vengeance with the trendiest disco as their stage. This disco happens to be the Starlight, a fictionalized version of Montreal’s famed Lime Light discotheque. Funkytown, screening April 29 at Regal Cinema South Beach, offers a look back at the golden era of disco and all the craziness that came with it. “The film faithfully captures the era,” wrote The Globe and Mail, adding that the film has “a soundtrack that will have you shaking your groove thing as you emerge from the theatre after two-anda-quarter hours at the disco.”

“It’s a strong year for documentaries. We try to keep the documentary list to 30% of the program.”

- Franc Castro, MGLFF Executive Director

The Swedish film, Kiss Me (Kyss Mig), screening April 28 at the Regal Cinema South Beach, is a beautiful love story with a twist from director Alexandra-Therese Keinig. Mia and Frida, both in their thirties, meet at their parents’ engagement party. Sparks fly between the two future-step sisters and we see these two fall, where they did not expect, in love. Another women’s film, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, is described as an “original mash-up of a “low-fi” New York City romantic comedy and a sci-fi Bmovie spoof” tells the story of three aliens, one who falls in love with a mild mannered Earthling. The New York Times called Madeleine Olnek’s Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, screening on April 29 at Miami Beach Cinematheque, “a witty ode to urban love.” This year MGLFF has added a family feature, Muppets Take Manhattan, screening on April 29 at Miami Beach Cinematheque. “We’ve recognized that a lot of people have families so we’re offering this film for children and our nontraditional families,” says Castro. This classic Frank Oz comedy feature is a free selection of the MGLFF. MGLFF also gives a nod to shorts this year. “We’ve put a short film before most of the features as a way to promote short films,” says Castro. The Men’s shorts program, What Men Want, has always been a favorite and is one of the first to sell this year. With subjects ranging from an odd way to measure your manhood, to a zombie apocalypse, to a funny phone connection, and the loss of a friend, the Men’s

Shorts Program, on May 3 at Miami Beach Cinematheque, offers an interesting menu of films that include 33 Teeth, Cupcake, Deaf Relay, Fallen Comrade, Las Llaves, Shabbat Dinner, and Sounds of Oud. What Women Like, the Shorts Program for Women, features a showcase of short films with subjects ranging from strained relationships to budding love. Poker Face, No Direction, Slow Burn and Fresh Air are just some of the films included in What Women Like, screened May 3 at Miami Beach Cinematheque. “It’s a strong year for documentaries,” says Castro. “We try to keep the documentary list to 30% of the program.” The powerful documentary Wish Me Away, directed by Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf, follows award-winning country music star Chely Wright through her public coming out. Wish Me Away will be screened on April 28 at Regal Cinema South Beach followed by a Q & A with Chely Wright. Other documentaries of note include: 30 Years From Here, stories from the war on AIDS; Vito, the life of gay activist Vito Russo; Ballroom Rules, gays competing in the world of ballroom dancing; The Celluloid Closet, the 1995 documentary based on Vito Russo’s book; Angel, the story of a boxer from Ecuador now a transsexual prostitute living in France; and Seventh Day Adventist, the story of a gay Seventh Day Adventist. MGLFF, with its new tagline “Born For the Big Screen,” continues to live up to its mission to “Entertain, Educate, and Inspire.” “The film festival allows us an opportunity to share our stories with our community,” states Castro. “I prefer watching a film in a room with the community rather than at home. It’s also great to have a forum to discuss.” MGLFF offers an impressive ten-days of films, many with discussions with the filmmakers following the screenings. Miami’s gay community welcomes the 14th annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. With over 65 films and a variety of filmrelated parties and events, there is a lot to see. The MGLFF, an opportunity to be entertained, educated, and inspired, from April 27 – May 6. For complete schedule, visit www. mglff.com. “Lily Tomlin just may be the eighth wonder of the world!”

JASON MRAZ HAS FOUR LETTERS FOR YOU

e’ve all got our own opinions about love. Some might feel the sound of the word alone makes their hearts race as the image of that stranger they met during Pride flashes before their eyes. For others, it might be a sense of peace and security brought on by the face lying right next to them. For Jason Mraz, it’s just a four-letter word. Or at least that’s what the singer-songwriter wants us to think on his fourth studio album Love Is a Four Letter Word. But he’s not fooling anyone. If you think following an international smash like “I’m Yours” is hard, try writing an album about love in the middle of a break-up. But we’ll get to that later. Jason Mraz has never been the type of artist to base his success on chart ratings or the size of his bank account. Yet he’s been selling out shows around the world for over ten years. Mraz credits most of his success to his gay friends and fans that have supported him since the beginning. “I moved to San Diego and I was immediately embraced – mostly by the gay community first. My manager and his partner, lots of people from that community took me in, gave me a home and basically championed my career. So that always felt like my community,” Jason shared in an interview with Instinct magazine. He is so taken by us and our fight for equality that during his recent engagement with longtime love, singer Tristan Prettyman, J-Mraz announced, at the Elton John AFER benefit concert, that they would NOT get married until everyone could. This might’ve come off as just another Brangelina stunt. But after a few months, Tristan got restless and Jason had to make a choice. He chose us. Any other straight man would’ve given in and went ahead with the nuptials. Any other artist would have scrapped the “Love” theme and moved into a darker place. Instead, Mraz channeled his emotions to craft one of the most honest and heartfelt collections of ballads and upbeat love songs ever recorded. You won’t find any club bangers on LOVE or any “rolling” or “fire-setting” for that matter. But trax like “Living in the Moment,” “Frank D Fixer,” and “In Your hands” will give you a new perspective on the world’s favorite emotion. Each track oozes with the clever wordplay and colorful metaphors that have kept Mraz in the hearts of his fans for so long. Hardcore Mraziacs won’t be disappointed and those who’ve never had the pleasure might just find themselves a new Love. If you’re a recording artist, musician or producer and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at Alfredo@wireweekly.com 17 | wire magazine | issue #17, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT

Directed by: Nicholas Stoller Written by: Jason Segel & Nicholas Stoller Cast: Emily Blunt Jason Segel Chris Pratt Alison Brie

f I ever wanted the brother I never had, I would want him to be Jason Segel. I just love watching this guy, his “everyman” persona, constantly being trampled to death by an unyielding world. For me it started with Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), then I cemented my “fan-ship” with the Bro-mance I Love You Man (2009), even enjoyed him in Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), and The Muppets (2011). I think this guy is the genuine article, a true talent who can write, produce, and act, while making relevant and humorous observations on foibles of modern life. Reteaming with Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller under the tremendously successful Judd Apatow banner, we find Jason again suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune as he tries to find his way through the maze of marital engagement and all it encompasses. Here’s a simple overview of the story: one year after Tom Solomon (Segel) meets Violet Barnes (Blunt), he plans to surprise her with a ring and runs to get married. Their plan goes off the track when another wedding ultimately overshadows their engagement, so they postpone their own. Then Violet is offered a two-year position at the University of Michigan. Tom, benevolent lover that he is, passes up a career -making opportunity to become head chef at a trendy San Francisco modernist bistro, to follow her to the snow and cold where they can figure out their life and plan the perfect wedding. From this point on any plan they decide on goes wildly off track, as does Tom’s total existence. To watch his disintegration is the joy of a Jason Segel performance, rife with pathos and laughter, made all the more wonderful by the terrific chemistry Emily Blunt brings to her role as his paramour. The supporting cast is made up of a strange brew of screwball characters who add loads of comical situations that will get and keep you laughing every time you think the pace or problem presented is becoming too much or lasting too long for you to handle. It’s an enjoyable trip following this journey, and I’m glad I took it. You should enjoy the film a lot, its sensibilities are more adult in its presentation than most and you’ll feel every joy and agony right along with Violet and Tom. More to the point, it’s a darn good date film. The Five-Year Engagement Rating: 4 Stars (out of 5) TRT: 124 minutes R (for sexual content, and language throughout) 18 | wire magazine | issue #17, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

DINING

BY RAFA CARVAJAL

LA LUPA DI ROMA IS BEYOND FUSION lavio Nisti and his family have delighted diners at La Lupa di Roma at 610 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach for close to 15 years by being truthful to their profession as restaurateurs who make all their patrons feel special. The Nistis personally take care of their customers and offer them both a delightful dining experience that truly exceeded all my expectations, and one of the largest and most impressive selections of Italian wines in South Florida – ranging in price from $29 to $7,500. Some of the most highly collectible wines have been personally brought from Italy by the Nistis so La Lupa’s diners can enjoy them in Miami Beach.

“We took very famous Italian ingredients and meshed them with ingredients and preparations from all over the world to create a new generation of dishes that did not exist before. It is beyond fusion!”

– Flavio Nisti

Crispy taco stuffed with arugula, bresaola & parmigiano cheese

Vermentino wine scented risotto served with steamed lobster tail in curry sauce

Grilled corn tortilla topped with wild porcini mushrooms & fondue of artisanal cheese

Cold gazpacho served with deep fried croquettes of garbanzo beans flour

Couscous with pesto, topped with zucchini carpaccio & served over pumpkin puree

As Italian cuisine on Lincoln Road started to look and taste the same, La Lupa di Roma decided that a change was needed to stand out and be different from everyone else. So they presented themselves with the challenge to incorporate the multicultural identity of Miami into a new La Lupa Around the World menu by taking very famous Italian ingredients and meshing them with ingredients and preparations from all over the world to create a new generation of dishes that did not exist before, and was described to me during my recent visit to La Lupa di Roma as “beyond fusion” by our host Flavio Nisti. These dishes were some of the most delicious and delectable I have ever enjoyed dining out anywhere in the world – a true testament to fine dining! I personally photographed some of my favorite appetizers, entrees, and dessert for you. Happy dining. Enjoy! 22 | wire magazine | issue #17, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

ALZHEIMER’S FOUNDATION

BEAUTY BASH , Unity Now Is A Tomorrow for Everyone to Benefit the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America

y grandma Abuelita Rosy loved life. She was a beautiful woman who resembled Liz Taylor and loved Mariachi music and traveling to Mexico on vacation. But one day my mom started to notice some odd behavior and signs that something was wrong with Abuelita Rosy. Soon, Abuelita Rosy came to live with us. I vividly recall seeing my beloved grandma wither away into a world of her own when I was just a teenager. I also remember watching my mom suffer immense stress and grief seeing her mom fall prey to Alzheimer’s disease and the progressive, degenerative effects of a disorder that starts with signs of memory loss and confusion and ends by taking away the soul and health of so many people we love. So when Edward Oberle called me for assistance in helping to get the word out on the Beauty Bash, Unity Now Is A Tomorrow for Everyone to benefit the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, I decided that Wire Magazine should sponsor this event in honor of my grandma’s memory and help raise money to cure Alzheimer’s. Beauty Bash, Unity Now Is A Tomorrow for Everyone will be an evening of beauty, fashion, music, and entertainment at the stunning Bamboo Miami Beach – the newest multimillion dollar world-class nightclub in South Beach (550 Washington Avenue). The event is this Saturday, April 28, and will start at 9:30 p.m. with a meet and greet and photos, followed by the fundraiser starting at 10 p.m. General Admission tickets are $30, VIP tickets are $75, and Ultra VIP are $250. Anyone donating $1,000 will have Executive VIP status with table service.
