EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE A SAD POLICE STATE OF AFFAIRS emorial Day Weekend in Miami Beach has come and gone. Even though I really like to spend time in South Beach on a regular basis and support many of the businesses in town, I chose to stay away from what could only be described as a police state where citizens of the United States were limited in their ability to move about freely in South Beach. In a country that prides itself for respecting civil liberties it was decided by a select few – without citizen consultation – that it was ok to establish armed police checkpoints and blockades and stop people from traveling in their cars through public streets in a well-known American city. There was a time in early U.S. history when the British Empire also used and abused the power of the state to restrict what citizens could do, and the people, of what became the United States of America, did not approve of it and decided to create a new nation whose founding fathers, on July 4, 1776, approved a Declaration of Independence that reads, in part: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, -- That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. -- Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.” I personally consider the excessive use of police power and the restriction of my ability to move freely in South Beach during any particular weekend a violation of my unalienable rights, including liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is particularly ironic that this happened on a holiday weekend when our nation chooses to honor its fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for protecting our freedoms and our way of life. The American way of life IS NOT and SHOULD NEVER BE characterized by a police state. No government, federal, state, or local, should be spending millions of its taxpayers dollars to restrict the free movement of its citizens by creating checkpoints on public streets manned by hundreds of police officers, guns, and equipment because it is incapable of exercising leadership to address the real issues that underlie Memorial Day Weekend in Miami Beach. It is a sad state of affairs when government chooses heavy police tactics to “manage” the big elephant in the room. Memorial Day also typically marks the start of summer vacation season. So it is time to start doing some planning, if you haven’t done so already! In the United States June is also Pride month, which was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall riots that occurred at the end of June 1969. In this week’s cover story we bring you the scoop on New York and San Francisco Prides – two Pride celebrations that are very popular amongst South Floridians. We also chose Wire Magazine’s top Pride picks from around the world so you can attend some other great Pride celebrations. It also happens to host the biggest gay circuit event on the North American continent. While egos may bristle in New York, Los Angeles, and even Mexico City, it is in Toronto, on the northwestern shores of Lake Ontario, that the massive Prism Festival finds a home. Now entering its triumphant ninth year, Prism is part of the larger Pride Toronto (the largest pride organization in North America), and the 2012 cycle, from June 28 to July 1, promises 30 DJs — phenoms Peter Rauhofer and Tony Moran among them — and performers, like Billboard darling Erika Jayne and the Pussycat Dolls’ Jessica Sutta, springing up all over the city center. Interested? Get online; Pride Toronto is pretty much open to everybody, but Prism parties are for ticket-holders only. Pride parties nearly bring Toronto to a standstill with ‘round-the-clock events, but the bacchanals of Prism, naturally, are for the creatures of the night — and you are spoiled for choice. Your introduction to conjugal Canucks is “Prism College,” on the 28th, and headlined by power-spinner Mickehi at the two-floor Fly Toronto space. The afore-mentioned Tony Moran, along with Hector Fonseca, then pick up the baton with “Bootcamp” on June 29th at the Main Room of Toronto’s sprawling Guvernment (yes, with a “U”) Entertainment Complex. And that’s only the start; there are still two more days to go. Come the weekend, things really kick into gear. Two parties, “Aqua” (where Sutta will strut her stuff) and the aptly-titled “Main Event” (where Jayne will strut hers), pretty much lock Saturday up. And on Sunday, Mr. Rauhofer heads “Revival,” a 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. final supernova of light and sound, with DJ Javier Medina and tagteam spinners Dave and Gerardo picking up the slack, if any. very morning when I wake up I look out my bedroom window on the 20th floor of my waterfront apartment on Brickell Avenue and never get tired of the amazing view of the ocean and Key Biscayne. There, right before my very eyes, is also the famous Rusty Pelican restaurant that brings back many memories of great dining experiences with my mom and brothers - who love to go eat there when they come to visit Miami. The Rusty Pelican is a Miami dining landmark where many Miamians and visitors alike have had countless dining experiences and memorable celebrations. Like any old salty dog, it was in need of a facelift, and boy did it get one! Just in time to celebrate its 40th birthday, the Rusty Pelican experienced a five-month, $9 million top-to-bottom renovation, completely transforming the restaurant and its special event spaces. COVER STORY: CELEBRATING GAY PRIDE AROUND THE WORLD DURING PRIDE MONTH New York’s Gay Pride Celebration is legendary, being the site of the Stonewall riots, and this year New York celebrates its 42nd year of Gay Pride. Wire Magazine asked Chris Fredrick, Managing Director of New York Pride Week to share a bit about New York City Pride. How many people are expected to attend Gay Pride this year? Since marriage passed last year the same weekend as Pride we saw a small increase in attendance from the region. This year, however, guests from all over the globe will be coming to celebrate New York State’s stance on marriage equality. We expect to see an audience of around 1.7 million on our busiest day of Sunday, June 24th.

ay pride is defined (by Wikipedia) as “the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements throughout the world.” Today gays demand to be heard and stand proudly, fighting for equal rights. That wasn’t always the case. June is Pride Month in the United States, chosen to commemorate the Stonewall riots that occurred at the end of June 1969. In the early morning of June 28, 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York’s Greenwich Village. That incident sparked the Stonewall riots, one of the first instances where gays banded together to rebel against government sponsored oppression of LGBT people. The Stonewall riots are considered to be the single most important event; some say the event that instigated the gay liberation movement. One year after the Stonewall riots on June 28, 1970, the first Pride marches were held in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Since then gay pride celebrations have popped up all over the world. While most are celebrated in June during Pride Month, others like Miami Beach Gay Pride are celebrated at other times throughout the year. Gay Pride is celebrated in many ways, with parades, marches, rallies, commemorations, community days, and large festivals like the one in Sydney, Australia that lasts several weeks.

What’s the percentage of locals to visitors? I always get this question and it’s extremely hard to quantify. How do you measure all of the people casually observing from the street, those watching from rooftops, and those that just so happen to stumble upon the events? We generally think our Facebook page is a good gauge of overall breakdown in attendees. Only 28% of our Facebook fan base is based in the New York Metro area, which signifies a much larger regional, national pull from other areas. What does gay pride mean to you? Gay Pride stems from a series of unfortunate events but has grown to become so much more. It’s an event unlike any other because it brings together every single background, gender, race, and religious belief for a celebration of one owns individual being. Additionally, it’s a time to reflect on how far the community has come and how far we need to still go to reach full equality. How do you choose your Grand Marshals? We have a general membership that is tasked with nominating Grand Marshals in November of the previous year. We look at individuals that have made an impact on the overall community. We’re proud to have Chris Salgardo - the President of Kiehl’s, Cyndi Lauper - Grammy Award winner, Phyllis Siegel & Connie Kopelove - the first couple married in New York City, as our Grand Marshals for 2012. We think they embody everything it means to be a part of our community. New York’s Gay Pride Celebration is a destination for visitors from all over the world. Why do you think your celebration is such a draw? It’s partially because New York is unlike any other city in the world. It’s such a destination in itself that we definitely benefit from being a part of this amazing city. Additionally, this was the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement and these events are seen as a sort of personal pilgrimage for millions of LGBT individuals. What’s different or new to your celebration this year? So many new and exciting things are happening this year! First, we’re doing our first ever Family Movie Night on Wednesday, June 20 on Pier 46. We’re showing the original Willy Wonka and it will be a great way for LGBT families to share their love under the stars. Additionally, our dance events, Rapture on the River & Dance on the

Wire Magazine caught also up with Brendan Behan, Executive Director of San Francisco Gay Pride, so he could share a little about their legendary celebration.

How many people are expected to attend Gay Pride this year? We estimate over one million people will attend San Francisco Pride over the two days of our event on June 23-24 – by the way that’s more attendees at our event than is in the entire population of San Francisco itself!

Pier have changed locations for this year. For over 20 years we’ve historically done these events on Pier 54, which was rather cramped and confined. Now we’ve moved them to a much larger indoor Pier, Pier 57, which is essentially double the size of the previous location. We think people will be impressed by the production that we come up with for these events.
What’s the percentage of locals to visitors? Approximately 40% of our attendees come to Pride from outside the Bay Area. Florida is actually our #5 biggest source of out-of-state attendees, even besting neighboring states Oregon and Nevada. What does gay pride mean to you? Pride means loving yourself for who you are and standing proud in a community of people who embrace, accept, and celebrate you and all of our diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Pride is a movement, and it is about fighting for our dignity and equality as LGBT people.
What’s the highlight of New York Gay Pride? For many, it’s the March or what many people consider the parade. To see millions of people in the street celebrating our community is overwhelming and awe inspiring to say the least. It’s that pivotal moment for many that makes them realize they are part of something much larger than they ever imagined.
How do you choose your Grand Marshals? Grand Marshals are chosen in a bunch of different ways, including by public vote, by our members, by our former Grand Marshals, and by our board of directors.
Have you attended other gay prides and how do they compare? Sure! I’ve been to various Prides all over the world in cities such as London, Columbus and Boston. Unfortunately, I don’t get to attend as many as I would like since many fall in the month of June. I think each city has its own unique characteristics that set it apart from one another. With different rules and regulations in every city, some have a certain advantage over others depending on how much their own governments support the events. We think we produce the best quality events for what we are given and continue to diversify our event roster with each passing year.
What would you like to tell Wire Magazine readers who might be thinking of coming to New York’s Gay Pride? We can guarantee one hell of a good time. New York City Pride is one of the only places in the world to be among so many of your peers while celebrating your own individuality. What’s your fondest memory of a past gay pride celebration? My fondest memory was actually when I was 17 and I just so happened to be visiting the New York City with my mom during Pride. We stumbled upon the March and it was one of the most life defining moments I’ve ever experienced. Being from a small town in Ohio, I had never knew what the LGBT community consisted of or knew how many people were a part of it. It was the moment I decided that I needed to move to New York City. Little did I realize that I would be running the events 13 years later.
San Francisco’s Gay Pride Celebration is a destination for visitors from all over the world. Why do you think your celebration is such a draw? Because San Francisco is world famous for our diversity and our long history of acceptance and belief in equality. SF Pride is everyone’s Pride - so much so that we don’t require a fee to attend and instead we ask those who can to donate generously at our event gates.
What’s the highlight of San Francisco Gay Pride? Our theme this year is Global Equality and we are thrilled to be having our first Global Grand Marshal, Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, who has been deeply involved in LGBT rights work in Uganda. We’ve also been doing a lot of education and outreach work on global LGBT rights issues on our blog at sfpride.org/blog throughout the year in the build up to this year’s event. Have you attended other gay prides and how do they compare? I am myself a native of San Diego, and so San Diego Pride is near and dear to my heart - a truly wonderful event. Every Pride is different, and I think our pride events reflect the communities that organize them. Economic ac-

San Francisco Pride is a Pride unlike any other I have ever seen. What’s your fondest memory of a past gay pride celebration? At my first SF Pride back in 2005 - the year before I joined staff - I remember a local drag queen on the Main Stage telling the crowd, “No matter who you are or where you’re from, when you’re in San Francisco, you’re home,” and I remember feeling such an incredible feeling of total acceptance that it gave me chills. It’s a moment I will always carry with me. What would you like to tell Wire Magazine readers who might be thinking of coming to San Francisco’s Gay Pride? Sao Paulo, Brazil (June 7-11) www.gaypridebrazil.org The Sao Paulo Gay Pride or Parada do Orgulho Gay GLBT de Sao Paulo, in Portuguese, boasts the largest Gay Pride Parade on the planet. In the past 16 years, the event has grown from 2,000 participants in 1997 to 4 million people in its last edition. In 2006, the Guinness Book proclaimed it the world’s biggest Gay Pride celebration. 4.5 million people are expected for 2012. Tel Aviv (June 8) www.gaytlvguide.com Tel Aviv’s pride parade takes place on June 8 with over 50 gay events held throughout Pride Week. Tell Aviv Gay Pride is one of the biggest events of the year in Tel Aviv, which has earned the city the title Gay Capital of the Middle East. Berlin (June 23-26) www.csd-berlin.de Berlin, one of the world capitals of gay travel, boasts a thriving gay scene that first began during the 1920s. The Berlin Gay Pride Parade, aka Christopher Street Day, kicks off the Berlin Pride Festival, which is expected to attract over 450,000 people this year. Madrid (June 29-July 2) www.patroc.com/madrid/ Madrid’s Gay Pride Parade kicks off the Madrid Gay Pride Festival, with lots of celebrations held in the city’s Gay Village, the Chueca District and the Plaza de España. London (June 23-July 7) www.pridelondon.org In addition to its normal Gay Pride celebration, this year Pride London hosts WorldPride 2012. WorldPride takes place at least every five years in a city chosen by InterPride, the global licensing body for Pride organizations. Pride London is the biggest un-ticketed event in Europe. Amsterdam (Aug 3-5) www.amsterdamgaypride.nl Gay Amsterdam is a favorite among travelers and Gay Pride Amsterdam is one of the busiest weekends of the year in Amsterdam. Street parties are scheduled all week long with club circuit parties and the famous Canal Parade on Saturday. Montreal (Aug 13-19) www.fiertemontrealpride.com/en One of the major highlights of Montreal Gay Pride is the traditional Pride Parade, held right in the heart of downtown Montréal, which culminates in a Mega- T-Dance. Community Day, street parties, and a street fair are all part of Montreal Gay Pride.

Let’s not kid – you’d pay to hear any of these women read the phone book, right? Well, maybe not. If The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is any indication, even the best actors need good material. Even though Best Exotic Marigold scores two of the top-drawer thesps above (sorry, no Mirren), and a brace of other distinguished British actors, it’s rather a snooze, really. It’s the story of several retirement-age Brits who outsource their golden years to what they think is a palatial hotel in Jaipur. When they arrive in India they discover that their elegant hostelry is less an actual hotel than a tumble-down entrepreneurial notion of a hotel pulsing in the febrile brain of Sonny Kapoor (Dev Slumdog Millionaire Patel). Once they settle into their shambolic quarters, the retirees fan out across the city, making discoveries about Jaipur, India and – themselves. Graham Dashwood (Tom Wilkinson), a gay retired judge, searches for the love of his long-ago adolescent life. Upon finding him, Dashwood does what all well-behaved homosexuals do in nice, genteel movies like this. It wouldn’t be cricket to say what happens, but if you saw Four Weddings and a Funeral…You get the drift. Recently widowed Evelyn Greenslade (Dench), unmoored by her husband’s death, discovers a whole new life in the teeming city, landing her first job (teaching Indian phone operators to talk like Brits) and getting friendly with Douglas Ainslie (Bill Nighy), whose wife Jean (Penelope Wilton), freaked out by the heat, the crowds, the smells and the food, refuses to leave the hotel. Muriel Donnelly (Smith), a bigoted retired housemaid, forms a relationship with a hotel employee, connecting with the girl’s humanity – and her own. Madge Hardcastle (Celia Ab Fab Imrie) and Norman Cousins (Ronald Pickup) seek out autumnal sexual triumphs. At a little over two hours Best Exotic Marigold has time for multiple plots, scads of character development, a bit of travelogue and the occasional spasm of dry wit (it is British, after all), all of it ending in a monsoon storm of wish fulfillment. Everybody in this movie gets what he or she wants (or very nearly so) before the credits roll on Best Exotic Marigold. 10 SECRETS FOR WORKING WITH A
PERSONAL TRAINER ere are some tips on getting the most out of your workout and the time and money you spend on personal training: 1. Set realistic goals and be confident. Be realistic about how much time you have for the results you want, and how you can achieve them. Develop a list of both short- and long-term goals. This will keep you motivated to accomplish and surpass them. 2. Get specific about what you want to achieve. Your trainer will not automatically know what you want to accomplish. So make sure you are specific and tell your trainer exactly what your goals are. 3. Have fun! Working out should be enjoyable. Your personal trainer is there to push you and motivate you, but never to intimidate you. So talk with your trainer about activities you enjoy, your schedule and exercises you don’t particularly like. This way, he or she can devise a routine you’ll love.

Things definitely got interesting as some of Score’s favorite bartenders were mixing drinks in black suits, tie, and shades in celebration of the release of Men In Black III.
4. Performing each exercise correctly is imperative, so watch your form. To achieve the best possible results and to stay injury-free, follow your trainer’s instructions about proper form. And don’t forget to warm up, breathe during your workout and stretch and cool down. 5. You should begin to see results in three months. The three-month mark can be a good indicator of how you’re doing. In about 90 days, you should be able to notice results - whether it be that your clothes are a little looser, your quality of sleep is better, or you just feel good all-around. 6. Communication is the key to success. As with any relationship, communication is vital when it comes to a healthy and happy experience. Don’t be afraid to give your trainer feedback. 7. You’re going to have bad days. For every step forward you might experience a few steps back. But remember a slip is not a fall. The biggest problem trainers see in their clients is that their emotional confidence starts to dwindle when something goes wrong. Believe in yourself and believe you can do it. 8. If you don’t have a trainer, you can still stay motivated. You can always work out with a partner for extra encouragement. Perhaps you can get together with a group of co-workers and form a workout club. Each of you can be responsible for bringing a new exercise or workout suggestion to the mix. 9. You have to eat right, too. Personal trainers aren’t miracle workers, so after you leave the gym, make sure you follow the diet plan you’ve established for yourself. Try keeping a food journal. You will be amazed at how aware you become when you need to write down everything you put in your mouth. 10. Don’t forget to rest. Proper sleeping habits are important for you mentally. And if you don’t rest your muscles properly before and after a good workout, you risk injury. Adjust your sleep schedule and get both quality sleep and a decent quantity of sleep. REDISCOVERING THE SAVAGE VOICE OF
DARREN HAYES ometimes finding great new music is less about discovering a new artist and more about re-discovering an old favorite. Back in the ‘90s I was obsessed with Savage Garden. The Australian duo dominated the Australian charts back in 1996 with their unique sound, universal themes and addictive melodies - three of my guilty pleasures when it comes to great music. They first caught my attention with their lead single “I Want You” off their self-titled debut album. Then came “To the Moon and Back” and “Truly, Madly, Deeply” and I was officially hooked. Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones first met in 1993 when Darren answered Daniel’s want ad for a lead singer to join his band Red Edge. He was the only one who responded so naturally he got the gig. The double D’s played with Red Edge for a year before splitting off on their own and Savage Garden was born. They shopped their demos all over the world until they finally landed a contract with Roadshow Music/Warner Music in 1995 and released Savage Garden a year later. Together they were unstoppable. Savage Garden won awards and broke records all over the world including a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for winning the most Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards in one year. Their follow-up album Affirmation hit No. 1 in Australia and made the top ten in the U.K. and U.S. thanks to the title track (which they performed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Closing Ceremony) and the record-breaking smash “I Knew I Loved You” which spent 123 weeks on the charts. Like all great bands, Savage Garden split to pursue other individual projects. Hayes dove head-first into a solo career and released his first solo album Spin in 2002. Although it never quite made it across the pond to the U.S. it peaked at No. 3 in Australia, No. 2 in the U.K. and reached the top ten in Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Two more of his albums had similar success in Europe and the U.K. but again, not a peep here in the land of the free. In October of 2011, Hayes released Secret Codes and Battleships. Hayes opened the album with “Taken by the Sea.” Instantly the perfect storm of drums and strings swirl around Darren’s melancholy vocals as the track builds up to a category 5, only to crash into perfection with every chorus. Track after track the album overflows with heart-felt pop, catchy hooks and not a single rap breakdown or auto-tune in sight! The up-tempo “Bloodstained Heart” even got a heads-up by Perez Hilton himself who wrote on his blog: “Darren Hayes is back with a song closer to his Savage Garden days than anything he’s done of late. A beautiful, powerful, emotional, big, sweeping pop song with meaning.” Darren Hayes is definitely back with a vengeance. Every epic song on Secret Codes and Battleships is the result of genius production by Carl Falk (Lady Gaga) and Hayes’ flawless, heart-wrenching vocals working in the most amazing harmony to hit my ears in a long time. There’s really no secret code or formula to discovering great new music. You could try looking through the charts or see what’s happening in other countries. Sometimes all it takes is a quick peek into the past; because in the end, really great music is timeless. FORGIVE OR FORGET? (PART TWO) The experience of forgiveness is a process. Since each situation is unique, it’s impossible to predict how long it will take. Here are some ideas for beginning the process: Acknowledge your feelings of anger and hurt. Sometimes it seems as if it might be easier to deny the feelings or push them back down, because it hurts to feel them. In the long run, denying these feelings only causes you more pain and actually prolongs the hurt. Express your feelings constructively. No matter how badly you were treated or how angry you are, it is never acceptable to harm anyone else. You may need to find a neutral third party to talk to until you feel calmer toward the person who hurt you. Wire_HP_horiz_She_HP_horiz 12:37 PM the Page 1 Protect yourself. who hurt you may still be a danger to you, physically
or emotionally. It is important to prevent being harmed again. Be willing to see the situation from the other person’s point of view. This will help you develop compassion, which will eventually replace the feelings of anger. Be willing to not know why. It is not necessary to know why the hurtful behavior happened. Even if you do learn the reason, you probably won’t feel any better. Chances are, the person who harmed you isn’t sure why he or she did it either. Look at yourself. Think about the part you played in the situation. Don’t blame yourself; rather, forgive yourself for the role you played. Recall a time when you caused harm to another person, and that person forgave you. Remember what the guilt felt like. Then, remember what you felt when the other person forgave you. You probably felt grateful and relieved. Write a letter to the person who harmed you. This letter is for your healing, and you do not need to mail it. Describe the positive aspects of the relationship and express your forgiveness for the hurtful behaviors. Express all of your feelings, both positive and negative.

Have a ceremony. If you have decided to end your relationship with the person you have forgiven, have a ceremony to symbolize it. Forgive yourself. Sometimes the person you need to forgive is you. You can begin to forgive yourself by realizing that when you made the mistake, you did not set out deliberately to hurt another person. Make the forgiveness tangible. You may choose to send the letter to the person you are forgiving or tell a trusted friend what you have done. Look for relief. Once you have let go of the pain and released yourself from past hurts, you will most likely feel a greater sense of freedom and well-being. Now you are free to move on with your life without bitterness and resentment. Dr. Gregg A.
