EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND REVISITED ast week I wrote a column entitled “A Sad Police State of Affairs.” I heard from a number of readers who either strongly disagreed or agreed with my point of view. Some residents of Miami Beach were happy with the large police presence, the traffic restrictions and the barricades, but other residents and business owners were definitely not. One thing is clear, we need some leadership to properly address the real issues without importing an army of police officers from several jurisdictions and spending millions of taxpayer dollars. A year ago in issue #23, June 9, 2011, I wrote a column entitled “Miami Beach Needs to Become A Different Kind of War Zone” suggesting a concrete solution and plan to address the Memorial Day weekend and urged City officials to exercise some leadership and create a new weekend honoring our veterans. I am once again printing portions of that column below to see if someone in the City of Miami Beach exercises some leadership on this matter. There is another alternative and Miami Beach could be a different kind of “war zone” during Memorial Day weekend. It would just take some planning and leadership from city government, local businesses, and city residents. It will also require everyone to actually remember what Memorial Day is about. What happens during Urban Beach Week is completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated. Furthermore, it has absolutely nothing to do with the color of people’s skin. As a Hispanic myself, if Miami Beach held an annual Latin Weekend that created as much mayhem, excessive noise, and total disruption in the lives of Miami Beach residents as Urban Weekend, I would also agree with anyone who categorized such a Latin Weekend as unacceptable. Memorial Day, which was originally called Decoration Day, was established as a day of remembrance for those who have died serving our country, rather than a day of partying where so many Americans forget the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. It is hard to believe that so many of our fellow citizens totally ignore or don’t care to take a couple of hours one day a year to pause and acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice made by so many of their fellow citizens - to defend their way of life and preserve the liberties and freedoms that make it possible for thousands of people to flood Miami Beach and cause total disturbances in the lives of fleeing residents. With some leadership, Miami Beach could actually put forth an alternative for Memorial Day Weekend that celebrates the City’s history and its importance during World War II, when our American Riviera resort town was transformed into a virtual army base almost overnight. The Army Air Force actually took over the Beach to train over 500,000 servicemen in what became a major training center for the war effort. The government requisitioned buildings, holiday bungalows, restaurants, golf courses, and the beach and converted them into barracks, mess halls, and training fields. Local residents had to get used to a new life that included bugle calls, blackouts, and USO clubs. To view some photographs and a film depicting life in Miami Beach during this chapter in the Beach’s history, visit www.wireweekly.com/editorial/mbww2. It will give you a completely different appreciation for what Miami Beach looked like as a “war zone” at that time. Madam Mayor and Commissioners, I invite and encourage you to create a new annual weekend event in Miami Beach that actually celebrates Memorial Day and the Beach’s contribution to our nation’s history. Plan it and collaborate with the Armed Forces, local business leaders and residents to make it happen. Invite thousands of current and former military personnel and citizens to come to Miami Beach to celebrate a new, well-organized, clean, and safe weekend in the American Riviera. Host a great parade in honor of our fallen heroes, hold an awesome concert with a famous performer and attract lots of people to the Beach, plan a street festival, throw some great parties, have an air show, etc. - all activities geared towards embracing the true meaning of Memorial Day and attracting thousands of current and former servicemen and women plus their families and friends to a well planned and organized weekend. If you do this, hotels, restaurants, and businesses will still benefit from having thousands of tourists come to the Beach for Memorial Day weekend and increased spending in the local economy. Furthermore, many Beach residents would actually stay home for the weekend and enjoy it, rather than running for the hills or hunkering down inside their homes, as many currently do. ON THE GO TRAVEL: FRANCE

GAY PARIS BY DANE STEELE GREEN

DIVALICIOUS Brunch @ Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar

ny country that has a kiss named after it is tops in my book. And when Paris, the “City of Lights,” hosts the first festival of French gay culture ever, the Paris Circuit Party, on June 28-July 2, it’s my guess that there will be a lot of kissing going on - among other things. Steele Luxury Travel has unbelievable discounted business class airfare to Paris and great deals on hotels as well.

The stunning Elaine Lancaster hosted her first DIVALICIOUS brunch at South Beach’s Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar. Guests enjoyed an scrumptious menu full of delectable bites. Diners were in for a surprise when Dennis Rodman stopped by for an appearance as well!

June 28: HUNKUT Things start off with the notorious HUNKUT Party (June 28) at the La Scene Bastille club. A circuit party from Brussels with a hard French twist, it’s got fetish, it’s got leather, it’s got porn stars. It’s got fetish porn stars in leather. In a club named after a prison. I don’t think I can really add anything more to this… June 29: Rapido Charging hell-for-leather (!) out of Amsterdam’s gravity-defying party scene, this is one of Europe’s true world circuit events, pulling in power DJs Giangi Cappai, Fabio White, and Xavier Seulmand from all over the continent to the Montparnasse megaclub Redlight. June 30: Weekends Major Party Here’s where things really hit warp-speed. This is just that—major. Taking place under the Grande Arche de la Défense, two clubs equaling 100 square meters and with a capacity of 5,000 are gearing up for the be all and end all of Parisian parties. Planners are coy as to just what is to take place, but performances by the high-heeled Ukrainian bevy of beautiful boys, Kazaky, promise to set the tone for the night. July 1: UNDER, Que Fuerté, and the Supermartxe Closing Party OK, Circuit Queens, can you handle three parties in one day? As Weekends winds down, UNDER, the official after-party, kicks off. Later on, it’s the Que Fuerté tea dance on the banks of the Seine, and all you need is your swimsuit. No, the party isn’t in the river, but on-site the foam pool does require the proper attire (Of course, once you go in, all bets are off). For the last party of the festival, the biggest party in Spain drops at the Club 1515. Get through this and you’ve earned your chops. July 2: MATINALE Gotcha! Yep, the Closing Party actually has an official after-party. All good things must come to an end, as they say (and let’s face it, you’re going to be exhausted after all of this). The final party takes place at the illustrious Crystal Lounge, and promises to be a beautiful send-off to the last five days. Now go get some sleep. DINING

BY RAFA CARVAJAL

MODERN CLASSIC ITALIAN AT SOHO BEACH HOUSE Images Credit: Gesi Schilling

y friend Cameron and I arrived to Soho House for a late dinner, and the lobby reminded me of the Harvard Clubs in Boston and New York. Soho House always gives me that feeling of class and sophistication. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and escorted into Cecconi’s Miami Beach, in the ground floor courtyard. This modern day classic Italian restaurant originated in Venice, has locations in London and West Hollywood, and has become a critically acclaimed dining destination featuring classic Venetian-influenced cuisine. Its captivating design catches your attention as you walk in with its beautifully lit Silver Buttonwood trees and antique Nile green striped tile floors in a graceful garden environment. A nice Italian dinner would be the perfect way to unwind from the stress of getting Wire Magazine done and off to the press on Wednesdays. Acclaimed Executive Chef Sergio Sigala brings an impressive culinary pedigree to Cecconi’s Miami from some of best kitchens in the world, including Michelin-starred restaurants Al Bersagliere in Goito, Italy, and Ristorante Villa Fiordaliso in Lake Garda, Italy. Chef Sigala was also Chef of Italian Cuisine at the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, where he catered private parties and royal weddings at 16 different palaces for dignitaries such as the Sultan of Bahrain, Prince Charles and Nelson Mandela, and Executive Chef at Miami’s Casa Tua for the last 10 years.

Executive Chef Sergio Sigala and Pastry Chef Oscar Bonelli

Chef Sigala focuses on sourcing quality, seasonal ingredients and uses simple preparations to add his own unique spin to his Miami menu, while still featuring all the classic dishes from Cecconi’s sister restaurants, including mouthwatering steak and seafood options. I particularly enjoyed the Wood-Oven Baked Meatballs and the 14 oz. New York Strip, with arugula and parmigiano - molto squisito! Other potential great choices include Wood-Oven Roast Scallops with Pancetta and Rosemary; Burrata, Red Onion and Fresh Tomato Pizza; Maine Lobster with Housemade Spaghetti; Veal Ossobuco with Gremolata; and a first-rate selection of prime steaks served with truffle jus and

garlic confit. Cecconi’s also features a 230-bottle wine list with an impressive array of Italian, Spanish and South American wines. Plus, if you love pizza, Cecconi’s has you covered with several yummy choices that can be paired well with your favorite prosecco or wine. Cecconi’s Miami also offers an impressive Sunday Feast for brunch, accompanied by live music. For $35 you can enjoy a delectable brunch with one complimentary Bellini, or a glass of orange or grapefruit juice, plus a full a-la-carte cocktail menu and table-side Bloody Mary cocktails handcrafted by Cecconi’s mixologists on a roving cart. Your choices include an Egg Station, omelet or scrambled, made to order with bacon, avocado and additional accompaniments; Sweets Station, waffles and ricotta pancakes, pastries and fresh-baked croissants, and homemade torta; Raw Bar,

oysters, salmon tartar, shrimp and fish salad; Carving Station, complete with roasted beef and pork, quinoa salad, meatballs and macaroni and cheese; and a traditional Cold Cuts spread. Finally, if you want a break from the ordinary on Wednesday nights, you can stop by Cecconi’s for their new Bring Me Food (BMF) Wednesdays, a new family-style dinner series featuring a four-course price fixe menu for $35, that is reminiscent of old-school Italian suppers – with a different menu each week. Your BMF dining experience will start with a glass of prosecco accompanied with an assortment of cicchetti. Your second course will be two hearty pastas, presented in oversized rustic bowls, followed by three entrees to be shared by the table that include a selection of Cecconi’s signature pizzas and a variety of meat and seafood dishes, and ending with three dolci. Bon Appétit!

GEORGE HAMILTON AND CHRISTOPHER SIEBER

STAR IN LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

A Broadway musical that glorifies cross-dressing? La Cage aux Folles is that and more. La Cage aux Folles, the Broadway musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein (who also played one of the leads on Broadway) and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman, comes to the Broward Center with its glorious show about life and loving. Taking a line from the show, “You’ll love us once you get to know us.” And audiences continue loving La Cage aux Folles. The original 1983 Broadway production won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The 2010 Broadway revival was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. While the Broadway productions had a revolving showcase of stars, beginning with Kelsey Grammer, stepping into the lead roles, this production also has star power with the legendary George Hamilton playing Georges and Christopher Sieber (who played Georges on Broadway opposite Harvey Fierstein) as Albin. In case you didn’t see the 1973 play by Jean Poiret, the 1978 French film, or the film The Birdcage - the Americanized film version of La Cage aux Folles shot in South Beach, here’s a brief synopsis of the plot. La Cage aux Folles is the story of a gay couple: Georges, the manager of a nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his star attraction who performs as his alter ego Zaza, and the chaos that erupts when Georges’ straight son brings home his fiancée and her ultra-conservative parents for a visit. Throw in a group of talented chorus boys who play chorus girls and you have a madcap musical with a happy ending. While audiences around the world are familiar with George Hamilton, I was excited to interview Christopher Sieber, a Broadway veteran, who played Georges on Broadway with Harvey Fierstein and now plays Albin in the touring production of La Cage aux Folles. While some remember Sieber from his role as Kevin Burke in the television show Two of a Kind starring the Olsen twins, he is most known for his outstanding work on Broadway appearing in shows like Shrek, Spamalot (for which he received a Tony nomination), Chicago, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Beauty and the Beast, and Into the Woods. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Sieber now lives on his own island in New Jersey with his husband. Wire Magazine was able to chat with Christopher about La Cage, Broadway, George Hamilton and Harvey Fierstein.

What’s the hardest part of playing a role like Albin? The energy level. It’s so exhausting. I don’t stop for 3 ½ hours. Show week is five days straight and I’m exhausted at the end. Why do you think La Cage is such a hit? It has an amazing score by Jerry Herman You can’t get the songs out of your head. It also has a great book by Harvey Fierstein. It’s a great story. Very powerful. Is this a message show or is it pure entertainment? Both. It’s who you love that matters. You can make a family no matter who you are. It’s like the line from the show; “You’ll love us once you get to know us.” The audience grows to love us during the show and they even sing along.

be whispers and pajamas because I’m so tired.

What do you think audiences remember most about La Cage? The ending. They remember that song. It’s the most powerful moment. People leave flying high. Is there anything else that you’d like to share with Wire Magazine? No, just come to see the show. You’ll have a great time. George Hamilton, with quite a body of film and television work under his belt, is probably best known as the actor with the perpetual suntan. Hamilton joins Christopher Sieber onstage as Georges in La Cage aux Folles. While Hamilton’s schedule kept him from a phone chat, Wire Magazine was able to get a few interview questions answered via email.

How are you adapting to life as a nightclub owner in La Cage? It’s a challenging role for me. In many ways, I’m envious of Chris Sieber playing Zaza because Albin is such a fabulous, flamboyant character. It’s seductive to want to be the farceur. Chris is so good in this: He gets bored with doing the usual, so he will change things around [in a scene]. My job is to be organically anchored to this— I’ve got to direct traffic through this whole story. I’m torn between my son and Albin. If I’ve done my job correctly, the piece takes on a profundity that’s got to be there. How is Christopher Sieber as an on-stage husband? He’s the on-stage wife; I’m the on-stage husband. Every night, I bow to him. I think he’s terrific, and I love working with him. We became fast friends. He’s played both roles [having done Georges on Broadway opposite Harvey Fierstein as Albin]. Initially, I would hear him say things and I’d wonder, “What is he mumbling?” But then I’d realize he was giving me my lines [laughs].

CHRISTOPHER SIEBER AS ZAZA

How are you holding up with the eight-showa-week schedule? Did hearing about Jeffrey Tambor’s abrupt departure from the Broadway production make you think twice about taking on the role? I only heard about Jeffrey after I had taken it. I’ve never actually heard the clear story. I heard he had hip replacement surgery pretty close to the show. But I had a knee replacement, so I’ll match his hip with my knee. I didn’t really realize how difficult this is. Not only is it daunting in the amount of time you’re on stage, but also with all you have to do. What’s it like to be surrounded by this youthful ensemble of dancers? We’ve got some of the most wonderful dancing! These athletes are unbelievable. They are just incredibly kind and respectful to me—and protective. I love ‘em. Initially, the ensemble and I stayed at separate hotels, because I have places that I like in every city that I’ve been before. In the first couple weeks, one of the Cagelles had a nineinch cut right to the bone in his foot, and he was back in the show a week later. Another one pulled his hamstring and was out for about two weeks. So I thought, I’m in the middle of people who can really take punishment and go back into the show; it would be best for myself to stay close to the theater. So I’ve kind of moved to wherever they go. I don’t want to be too far of a walk away.

a Cage aux Folles has a troupe of dancers called Les Cagelles, the drag queens of La Cage aux Folles that keeps the audience screaming. Wire Magazine caught up with Matt Anctil, one of the Cagelles, for a quick chat about La Cage, dance, touring, and drag.

For those not familiar with La Cage aux Folles, what’s the story in a nutshell? Ever heard of The Birdcage? Set in St. Tropez in the ‘70s, La Cage tells the story of Georges (the owner of the gaudy drag cabaret) and Albin (the sassy headliner), and what happens when their son arrives with a bit of news, he’s getting married to the daughter of a conservative political fanatic. As the families meet for the first time, feathery chaos ensues and pushes the anticipated wedding to the edge of collapse. Thankfully, the true element of family and marriage comes to the forefront to show that LOVE knows no boundaries, enemies or obstacles. As long as we continue to keep that in mind, the best of times is truly NOW. What is your role in La Cage? I play Angelique, the “less than enthused” muscle drag queen. She is one of six unique characters called Les Cagelles, who are the drag queens of the nightclub, La Cage Aux Folles. As a group, we entertain the audience with over the top musical numbers, jump splits, acrobatics, comedy and dance. Individually, we show that each of us are unique, bringing a special element of “fabulous” that when put together, makes for an unforgettable evening.

COVER STORY: GEORGE HAMILTON & CHRISTOPHER SIEBER STAR IN LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

How long have you been in the show? Can you share your audition experience? I have been with the show for almost two years now. This was my Broadway debut and then I continued with the tour when we set out in October of last year. My audition was pretty unique. I borrowed a pair of heels from a friend and heeded the advice of my manager to go in for the role. Having never seen the show and only knowing that they had just revived it a few years back in 2005, I was not so anxious to book the job. The actual audition was one of the most thorough and dynamic dance calls I had ever been to. When you see the show you will understand why, we do a little bit of everything. 11 out of an original group of 90 or so were called back a week later. When I got there, I started looking around and noticed that the 10 other boys each had a hair person, makeup person, or both and I had my dance belt, Lycra jazz pants and a great big smile. It was a real “show must go on” moment. I just gave them all I had, from the heart, and next thing I knew I was waking up to one of the most amazing phone calls of my life, Duncan Stewart, the casting director, asking me if I wanted to join the La Cage family. Ya, I screamed after accepting, of course. Why do you think La Cage is such a hit? It’s an emotional entertainment roller coaster. Audiences come in night after night, not quite sure where we will take them, and they walk out with smiles on their faces. They’ve exercised their minds, hearts, faces and stomach muscles through all the comedy and drama. The story is so poignant and really drives home the message of equality and love without mounting a soapbox. In a way, we invite you to be enlightened AND entertained!! Is this a message show or is it pure entertainment? Both! You really just have to be open to possibility and trust that you are going to have a good time. What’s your favorite moment in the show? I really enjoy being in the cage,it’s such an intimate and beautiful moment with the musical tension and lighting. It’s a nice mix of sensuality and character. I get to choose a “victim” and keep my eyes on them for a moment of seduction before the comedy kicks back in. What’s generally the audience’s favorite moment? A lot of people love when we are in the cage and do the jump splits in the Can Can. Of course, the 11 o’clock number “I Am, What I Am” is a show-stopper. Christopher drives home a definitive message of acceptance and loving yourself for who you are. It’s the moment when people are crying and are moved to jump to their feet. You always put those kinds of numbers at the end of Act 1.

What’s your ultimate role that you’d love to play? Hmmmm, that’s a toughie. To be honest, I’m not really sure. I would really love to originate something spectacular, so that role is yet to be determined. But if I had to choose, I would think it would be the Leading Player in Pippin. Do you have any funny stories from the road that you can share? We were in Wilmington, DE, of all places, and as we were taking our company bow, a group of women in their 60s started throwing balled up bunches of panties at us. These were not Victoria’s Secrets. I’m talking granny panty bombs!! They were all directed towards George with things written on them like, “Call me for a good time.” Clearly, these ladies have done this before. What do you think audiences remember most about La Cage? I would hope that audiences really take to heart the message we deliver about equality and love. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t hear night after night, “Those legs!!! I want them!” So, maybe that’s the other memory they walk away with.

LA CAGE MATT IN COSTUME

What’s the most difficult part of performing as one of the Les Cagelles? I think the hardest thing for me, playing Angelique, is to stick to her mannerisms. The group as a whole is dynamic in character, but some days I just wanna queen out as much as the rest of them. But when everyone laughs at Angelique’s bitter attitude, it makes me smile inside to know that I gave them a chuckle. Our resident director on Broadway would always tell me “simple gets the laugh,” and that really was a skill that I had to exercise and learn. It’s really difficult to look like you could care less, well, for me it is, because inside it’s the complete opposite. Are audiences on tour more or less enthusiastic than Broadway audiences? It really depends on the city or market we are in. Of course, there’s a lot of wonderful energy in a Broadway house because, well, it’s Broadway!! But there’s something special about the ever-changing energy with each city we go to. I think audiences on tour, for the most part, are excited that we are coming to them with Tony award-winning material and yes, the fabulous uber Hollywood star, George Hamilton!! Is this your first time performing in drag? Yes! As you can tell from my audition experience for this show, I didn’t get the memo. I love it though. I am sure that it’s not my lifestyle but I really do enjoy going out and performing with the other “girls” when we do promos at local clubs. It’s also nice to step out of Angelique’s persona and explore my femininity in a different way,and who doesn’t love wearing rhinestones?? What’s been the highlight of your career so far? This show, for sure, has been quite the highlight of my career so far. It’s really the first time I’ve been given a role to nurture in a production this scale alongside major celebrity actors. With it being my Broadway debut, La Cage really holds a special place in my heart. Aside from La Cage, I think the second highlight of my career would be launching the arena version of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular back in 2008;that show was massive and pretty rock star. It was like being in a movie. IMAGES CREDIT: BROADWAY ACROSS AMERICA 13 | wire magazine | issue #23, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

nce again, Palace brings vivacity to Ocean Drive with “Dining With the Stars,” a new weekly Tuesday night show that brings the most iconic divas of all time right to your tableside. Opening night had more costumes changes, rhinestones, high-heels, and hair flips than a showgirls set in Vegas. Where else can you enjoy a mouth-watering T-Bone Steak dinner with a glass of red wine all while iconic divas Liza Minnelli, Anita Baker, Lady Gaga, and Tina Turner perform directly in front of you – nowhere! Not in this lifetime! Palace divas not only put on a great show, but they also gave you realism, both in physical appearance and in stage presence. Missy Meyaike gave us the climatic stage antics of Anita Baker. Noel Leon gave diners the quirky yet elegant and grandiose stage presence of Liza Minnelli, with a surprise performance of Minnelli’s rendition of “Single Ladies” taken from the movie Sex and the City 2. Tina Turner gave the crowd iconic moves, as she skipped across the stage and kept it “Rolling On De River.” Athena Dion brought the eccentric style of Lady Gaga to life with provocative and bold costume designs. So if you’re looking for a fun Tuesday night, stop by Palace to enjoy a special “Dining with the Stars” selection of entrees alongside a glass of wine and dessert on iconic Ocean Drive. Choose from the Salmon or Tilapia dinner over Penne Vodka with Garlic Bread, the Curried Shrimp Pasta over Linguini, the Chicken Cordon Bleu with mashed potatoes, gravy and sautéed veggies, or the T-Bone Steak dinner with garlic roasted potatoes and fresh grilled asparagus.

DAILY GRIND: ON THE SCENE UNDETECTABLE IS THE NEW NEGATIVE, I HEAR BY ANTWYONE INGRAM Image Credit: Photo by Katie K. Tang, Courtesy of ProjectStayNYC.org

e need to talk gentlemen. When exactly did being “undetectable” become the new negative, because that memo went completely over my head. In a recent issue of Wire Magazine, “Living With HIV: A Life Sentence,” we went into thorough detail about the epidemic and the stigma associated with the virus. I am completely aware of the inconvenience and complications the virus has created and am very knowledgeable about the virus, as every gay man should be (in a perfect world). However, I have a surprise for you boys, undetectable does not mean you are clean. Yes, the likelihood of passing the virus has decreased but you are not clean. Just because a chameleon can camouflage itself in defense to hide, it doesn’t mean that it is not a chameleon -- and the same applies to you. I understand that gay men with the virus avoid answering particular questions in reference to their status to avoid encountering stigma, but it’s another thing to put the life of someone else in jeopardy. On hook-up and dating sites there is often the option to disclose your HIV status. We usually assume that if it is unanswered, “I Don’t Know,” “Ask Me” or “Don’t Care,” that the correlating person’s HIV status is positive. And for this reason, those who are positive often just put “negative” to avoid a discussion about the state of their health altogether. If having unprotected sex regularly is your thing, knock yourself out – I personally, would rather play leapfrog in traffic. However, after inquiring if a handsome gentleman I was speaking to the other day was negative, he nonchalantly replied, “yes, I’m undetectable” – pump the brakes, wrong! You are positive, uninformed and naïve. I’m not sure if April Fools’ came late this year, whether some of you need to waltz back to a sex education class, or this is another one of those inappropriately commonplace things that I was simply misinformed about, but it’s definitely not a good look. I don’t think I need to elaborate on the extensive amount of cases that are continuing to pop up around the nation that involve an HIV positive man infecting an HIV negative man because no one’s status was disclosed. If you play with the life of another, because you were careless (the other participant is just as careless, mind you), your life will be played with as well – in a federal prison, being tossed back and forth by a group of men who don’t care about your status, and your new name will be Gretchen. You choose. I’m not bashing anyone, because the life of someone who has HIV is far beyond my understanding, and much more complex than any of us will ever know, but question your motives, morals, and overall respect for another’s life before you nonchalantly and ignorantly blurt out something like “yes I’m negative, I’m undetectable.” Get informed. 16 | wire magazine | issue #23, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

hile most of us are cooling off poolside or strutting our six-packs at the beach this summer, some of our favorite divas will be turning out new tracks to keep our dance floors scorching. One hot mama doing her part to make us sweat is the awesome Aussie herself, Kylie Minogue. On a mission to be THE summer anthem of the year, her new single, “Timebomb,” ticked its way across the globe last week and has been blowing up every speaker in its path. Its contagious beat edged with electric guitar riffs kicks off with Kylie’s smoldering purr and builds up to the kind of explosive chorus that just screams “summer anthem!” The new club banger is part of the ‘K25’ series of events celebrating 25 years of Kylie. Besides giving us another great reason to move our asses; Kylie also took some of her best B-sides, demos and rarities on the road last month for her ‘K25 Anti-Tour.’ While chatting with the music blog, Idolator.com, she said, “I’ve never done anything like that before, something like an anti-tour where there are no dancers, there are no lights. It’s just music and doing songs that are much loved by super fans but will never, ever, ever be heard anywhere.” Even without her smokin’ hot dancers, the sold-out tour grossed over $1,720,000 with only four stops between Australia and the UK (insert American sad face here). Kylie’s label, EMI, also released The Best of Kylie Minogue this week featuring 21 of Kylie’s hottest tracks, including five #1 singles. A special edition version also hooks you up with a DVD of the videos. Ever since Kylie made her musical debut in 1987 with her first smash, “Loco-Motion,” we’ve been obsessed with her voice, her videos and her over-the-top tours rivaling (and sometimes out-doing) that of a certain American Queen of Pop. She’s a breast cancer survivor whose musical and charitable contributions have won her over 100 awards around the globe, including a Grammy and a recent induction to the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame. Having just celebrated her 44th birthday with the release of “Timebomb” it’s obvious that Kylie’s career won’t be diffused anytime soon. According to her website, we can expect to see and hear more K25 surprises ahead during her silver anniversary celebrations. More new music, maybe? Another tour? We’ll just have to keep our eyes on the clock to find out. If you’re a recording artist, musician or producer and would like your work featured on TOP TRAX, hit me up at Alfredo@wireweekly.com. 18 | wire magazine | issue #23, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

LIVING FOR THE WEEKEND

COSMETIC SURGERY

SUMMERSURVIVALGUIDE BY KEN HUNT

ith summer here, our entire week revolves around gearing up for the weekend getaways. The goal is to make the most of the time we have at the gym. But it’s not easy to include each body part and sufficient cardiovascular training in only three days. The trick is to be efficient; follow this routine and you’ll be able to perform a complete body workout in three days a week, and be ready for your weekend. Try to work out at the time you have the most energy because it will yield the best results, if you’re a morning person, schedule your fitness activities early in the day; if you perk up as the day goes along, plan your activities in the afternoon or evening. I know it seems logical, but if you are too tired or have had a horrible day, don’t force yourself to go to the gym. Take a long brisk walk instead. It will do wonders for you mentally. When exercising one muscle group, there is always a complimentary muscle that works almost as much. This means you’ll only be working on each body part once a week, but they will work two or three times a week. One of the benefits of this 3-day workout routine is that it can be scheduled on any day of the week depending on your availability and when you feel like going to the gym. Leave at least one day of rest between each workout.

PECS

IN ABOUT AN HOUR

Day 1: Chest, back, abdominal muscles. Day 2: Shoulders, legs, abs. Day 3: Biceps, triceps, abs. I’m not going to tell you specific exercises to perform. This is more to guide you on what muscle groups to combine and how to efficiently distribute your workout. Each set should consist of 8 to 15 repetitions to allow your muscles to work adequately. It isn’t worth lifting heavy weights at low repetitions, because a three day routine isn’t designed for people who want to build up strength and mass with maximum repetitions for each one of those sets. Finish your routine with 30 minutes of cardio. Use the treadmill, the rowing machine or a stationary bicycle to increase your heart rate and burn excess calories. Usually one or two minutes between sets is plenty of time. The total workout shouldn’t take more than 60 to 90 minutes. Let’s not forget that eating right is also important. On the weekends (especially if you are enjoying summer with your friends sharing a house or traveling), you tend to “slack off” a bit on your diet. So during the week it’s important to be strict about your eating habits. Here are some suggestions. For breakfast choose starchy carbs like oatmeal or my favorite, Cream of Wheat. You should also eat them before a workout or after a workout. A good choice would be brown rice or brown bread. Make sure to have at least 2 cups of veggies with each meal. And drink 4-6 liters of water a day. Choose egg whites, chicken breast, and fish as your protein staples. Try to incorporate them into your diet as much as you can. And don’t forget that fats are important. You can get them easily from natural peanut butter, fish oil and olive oil. Here are a few extra special secret tips to try a few days before you “Speedo up.” These will help avoid bloating (caused by air or food in the digestive tract) and help you look buff, toned and totally hot. 1) Avoid carbonated beverages. 2) Don’t use straws or chewing gum, which traps air. 3) Eat slowly, because gulping food traps air. 4) Avoid gas-producing foods such as beans and broccoli. 5) Drink water and eat juicy fruits to clean out your system. 6) Skip salty foods, which cause you to retain water. Have a healthy, happy and safe summer. See you at the beach! Ken Hunt is an AFI-certified trainer and fitness expert who owns New York and Miami’s Steel Gym. BY DR. LEONARD TACHMES & DR. RODGER WADE PIELET ectoral implants, commonly referred to, as chest implants for men, is a procedure to enhance the chest muscles in men who are looking for greater tone and definition. This procedure has seen a dramatic increase in the past several years because sometimes working out as hard as you can does not get you the results you are looking for. In other instances your muscles can be under developed because of an injury or a growth defect. Therefore, although it is usually performed for cosmetic improvement, the procedure can also be used to correct certain preexisting, congenital or traumatic defects. A cosmetic surgeon or board certified plastic surgeon can help you achieve your desired pectoral muscle enhancement results. The ideal candidate for this procedure is someone who is in good physical shape and has realistic goals and expectations. The pectoral implants procedure involves the insertion of a carefully styled, soft implant entirely under the pectoralis muscles, which makes it completely natural in terms of appearance and feel. The incisions are hidden in the armpit. This is performed as an out-patient surgery, so you would go home the same day. You may resume light activity and work in about one week and full activity in 4-6 weeks. Combined, we have successfully performed many of these procedures over the past 20 years to assist patients who want to look and feel better. Besides being able to perform the pectorial implants procedure, our exclusive cosmetic surgery practice specializes in a wide range of cosmetic surgery services in an ambiance of luxury within a safe, state-of-the-art environment. Miami Beach Plastic Surgery Center and Medspa is the only full-service plastic surgery clinic and medspa directed by a board-certified plastic surgeon on South Beach, and we have a fully accredited operating room and a recovery suite with a separate VIP entrance and exit for the ultimate in privacy and concierge luxury service steps away from Lincoln Road. DAILY GRIND: POLITICS

BY MICHAEL W. SASSER

WILL MIAMI BEACH MISS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CROWDS? rom all reports, Memorial Day weekend on Miami Beach was decidedly less chaotic than last year, when the traditional Urban Beach Weekend evoked scenes from Mad Max. Reports from the ground were generally upbeat and there was certainly less gunplay than last year. Arrest numbers were down slightly, but overall police complaint calls dropped more significantly. For sure, after years of being frozen by the destructive force of political correctness, the weaklings in City Hall had refused to address the mess that was Memorial Day weekend. You can definitely see that it must have been politically expedient to pretend to care this year because the city did a very good job at curbing mass crowds. Mass crowds have tended to be the problem in the past. Humans, it seems, like many animals, lose all senses and whatever intelligence they have, when gathered in throngs. Simple solutions like bottlenecking traffic coming into the islands and showing a strong police presence citywide worked for Miami Beach this year, accentuating the fact that only spinelessness could have led to this problem steamrolling to where it is today. Yes, indeed, both crowds and the violence they’ve typically sponsored were dramatically reduced over Memorial Day weekend this year. So, now what? Recent residents of Miami Beach might not recall the days when the city was a ghost town – an absolute ghost town – during the summer months. There are few more hellish places on earth than South Florida in the summer. For years, tourism industry and civic activists led by South Beach Hotel & Restaurant Association head honcho David Kelsey railed against the city’s – and the county’s – total lack of interest in developing summer tourism. Whole schedules of activities that would have attracted visitors here were Wire_HP_horiz_She_HP_horiz 5/19/12 12:37 PM Page 1 researched and presented for discussion. I’ve often thought that city fathers ignored

22 | wire magazine | issue #23, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

this problem because the important people were in the Hamptons or elsewhere for the summer anyway – so who cares about struggling shopkeepers, right? Then along comes Memorial Day, and sure, it might have brought every thug from Atlanta to town, but it also brought plenty of everyday people. Sure, ten people might have been crammed into one tiny Deco hotel room – that’s how youngsters roll. But it’s better than no one being in the hotel at all. Urban Beaches might not have cleaned out the pretentious overpriced sushi in Miami Beach, but I imagine fast food shops, diners and more affordable eateries did just fine. Well, unless customers ended up shot in the parking lot or run over by a drunken Beach cop. What? Too soon? In any event, Memorial Day weekend has been a mixed bag, but it appears to be fading. Sure, it could just be the economy diminishing crowds. That can’t help. But I think residents’ disgust with the crime and messes and the government’s long awaited effort to curb the madness had the largest impact. So will the city now go quiet again in the summer months except for the tiny, special interest events the city has had the guts to support? Or will leadership step forward with a proposal to now try to bring more easily manageable visitor groups into the city in the god-awful hot months? How hard could it be to come up with some kind of positive summer tourism mechanism? Last year, two youthful candidates for mayor crafted fairly detailed proposals. So, will a sitting commission member or community leader take up the mantle and recognize that a diminished Memorial Day weekend might be good for the city overall, but it isn’t great for the struggling summer economy?
