EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE STANDING UP TO INTOLERANCE ’m writing this week’s note sick in bed with a fever and a very bad cough. I was also not able to write this week’s “Dining” column. My body is paying me back for making a habit of not getting enough sleep because I work too much and go out a lot. It is time to reassess my lifestyle a bit going forward and make sure I take care of myself and get a lot more rest so my body can build up its defenses and I can be healthy again. It is certainly frustrating to see a beautiful sunny day outside my window and feel so sick that I just want to stay in bed all day. Let this be a lesson for all of us that our health and well-being should be top priorities. If we abuse our bodies, we will eventually pay the price. I share this with all of you this week in the hopes that if some of Wire Magazine’s readers are not getting enough sleep they will reconsider their lifestyle before they get as sick as I am today. As this year’s presidential election gets closer, I have been paying more attention to media coverage on television about the political campaigns and listening to the so called experts on both sides of the aisle. I get most of my coverage from cable and always make it a point to watch CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News every night to get a comprehensive roundup of all points of view. When you do this almost every night it becomes crystal clear that the media has an overall liberal bias, and that Fox is a conservative, Republican leaning network. The other thing that becomes abundantly clear is that the Republican Party has been hijacked by a small minority of religious right-wing conservatives who think their views are always right and try to justify them with their Bibles and religious beliefs. Their intolerance and desire to impose their views and “moral high ground” on the rest of us is completely unacceptable and downright disgusting. These fringe lunatics need to be confronted by reasonable, moderate Republicans and sent back to the Dark Ages where they belong. No political party in today’s United States should allow itself to be influenced to such degree by any minority within its ranks.

very time I go to New York, it’s an experience. I’ve been robbed, I’ve found love, experienced NYE in Times Square, and a plethora of memories that are impossible to forget because they are so “New York.” However, I’ve never experienced Pride in New York. I’ve heard innumerable stories about Pride weekend, all of which were intense, but I must say, even those unbelievable stories don’t capture the experience in itself. Matinee was first on my itinerary. After getting lost en route to the ferry, it was safe to assume I was at the correct location as I began to see circuit queens with high tops, mini Gatorade bottles full of “water,” oversized calves and torsos, and Chinese fans skipping frantically towards the docking station. My female companion (and ordained “fag-hag”) was in awe, as I struggled to not stare at the copious amount of “meat” that was surrounding me in line. It was quite surreal to be on a ferry with a couple hundred gays, heading to an island, while waving goodbye to the Manhattan skyline. Something about all of this seemed sinful, it was very reminiscent of Sodom & Gomorrah I told my female friend, chuckling. After wiggling through gay TSA, I was introduced to a big gay playground. A big blowup slide, illuminated multicolor palm trees, a sand pit, and giddy gays greeted me. There was no shortage of eye candy, as muscle queens, porn stars, random women, and boys in scuba gear and other miscellaneous gear danced vigorously against the Manhattan skyline. DJ Billy Lace was delivering a high energy set, setting the tone for the evening. As the sun began to set, a bigger crowd began to accumulate. Cautiously, I decided to venture to the dance floor, which was packed like a can of sardines – muscled, tattooed, and sweaty sardines. Hector Fonseca’s immaculate set screamed heart attack, as the BPM on every track forced you to dance. After working up a nice sweat myself, the music ceased and out comes Natasha Bedingfield. Decked out in jewels from head to toe, Ms. Bedingfield made her entrance looking like the gay tooth fairy meets the fairy godmother from the Wizard of Oz. She began with her hit tracks “Unwritten” and “Pocket Full of Sunshine.” Although cute and campy, it was random. Kudos for showing love to the gays though, girl. The night continued predictably, as the music progressively got more intense and the crowd got increasingly sketchier. I had a great time, however, the production of the event fell flat. Marketed as a “WATERPARK EXPERIENCE in the LARGEST outdoor venue in NY” was quite the exaggeration. Aside from the kiddy slide that was later deflated, and a big beach ball pouncing atop heads on the dance floor, there was nothing reminiscent of a water park (or an experience for that matter.) Matinee North America has always had this problem, major productions in Europe, mediocre productions in the States. Although I had an amazing time, I think I’ll save my circuit dollars for another circuit event until Matinee Group amps up the production. I could have created a better “water park experience” in my bathtub. I’ll leave it at this, my female companion (avid circuit queen & Alegria fan) left Matinee with one major highlight - a Bratwurtz sausage. o look at them, you would think that somewhere along the line, all the Eastern Europeans held a meeting, put their heads together, and made their alphabets as bewildering as possible (“Who needs vowels?” asked the Poles; “Who needs consonants?” asked the Romanians, “Let’s use as many accent marks as possible!” demanded the Hungarians). All I am saying is that when you find yourself in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, for its wildly colorful Pride Week (August 13 – 18), get ready to give your tongue a workout. And I mean that in an entirely non-sexual way, mostly. When the Iron Curtain came down, it was like a magician yanking off a drab tablecloth to reveal a rainbow-hued wonderland. Prague, “Praha” to the locals, already one of the world’s most beautiful cities, quickly became an art-and-culture capital. How could it not? The surrounding region is called Bohemia, and with “Bringing Our Colors Together” as the official Pride banner, the Czechs are revving up to show just how bohemian they can get: Prague Pride is East Europe’s biggest pride event, and it is only two years old. Unlike a few other European cities (looking at you, London), Prague makes it easy on visiting LGBTs by having a declared gay section of town, Vinohrady. It is here that you’ll find gay venues Club Valentino, Club Termix, and The Saints for a little East-meets-West “diplomacy,” and consider ON Club the center of it all, but things hit a climax all on their own on the 18th, the day of the parade. Starting in Wenceslas Square, at the statue of St. Wenceslas — the good king of the Christmas carol himself — and cavorting west through some of the most picturesque ‘hoods of the city, the parade ends on Stŕelecký Island in the Vltava River. Generally speaking, Stŕelecký is where most of the “official” Pride partying takes place, with stages set up for non-stop music from all over the world; the Israeli electro-pop band The Young Professionals (they tore Tel Aviv Pride a new one) is already signed up. “We want to show the Czech society as well as visitors from abroad that we will continue to put Prague on the map as Central and Eastern Europe’s capital of diversity and as one of Europe’s main LGBT travel destinations,” the director of the festival, Czeslaw Walek, says. n Miami there seems to be a party every night of the week and a celebration every weekend. That is definitely true at MOVA, the chic martini lounge that some call home every night of the week. Just as the smoke clears from the Fourth of July fireworks celebrations, MOVA will be gearing up for its Five-Year Anniversary Weekend (July 6-8) titled “Party Under the Big Top,” featuring amazing performances, sights, sounds, and, yes, circus acts. Wire Magazine chatted with the MOVA team about the theme nights, expansion, DJs, performers, and fun. Describe MOVA for someone who has never for its annual circus-themed event, what can visited MOVA? partygoers expect to see this year? MOVA, Miami Beach is a high-end martini lounge open every day of the week from 3 p.m. – 3 a.m. focused on excellent customer service, ambience, and superior drinks. Customers chill with friends during the calmer hours of day and others join us after dinner where the place is filled with a diverse group of people from all over the world. We have an amazing sound system where often people come in to listen to some of the top DJs in Miami, and on special nights some of the top DJs in the world. We focus on serving hand-made specialty cocktails and martinis from only fresh ingredients, including fresh raspberries, blueberries, oranges, mint, basil, and ginger, to name just a few, in addition to traditional drinks and beer. We love supporting and working with the lesbian community and are excited to have DJ Zheno promote and spin at “Vanity Girl” Thursdays, which, as you say, is the only weekly lesbian party on Miami Beach. “Vanity Girl” Thursdays are really taking off and MOVA is committed to serving the vibrant lesbian community, where we have many friends. We are adding some new things to “Vanity Girl” Thursdays. Each week over the next three months our team will highlight and sponsor different groups and businesses working within the lesbian community throughout the evening. So now, customers can mingle with friends, enjoy the great tunes of DJ Zheno and drinks specials, and also purchase cool fashion items from businesses and friends, where all proceeds from those sales stay with the business selling the products. MOVA believes in supporting small businesses and this is a way for us to give back to the community. Will there be any surprises at this year’s anniversary celebration and how will the 5th Anniversary celebration be bigger and better than last year? Of course there will be surprises and we are definitely focused on creating a fun time for everyone, as this is our 5th Year Anniversary! We already said too much above about what we have planned so far with CircX and friends, and we do have more and plenty of amazing special DJs spinning each night! But if I told you then it would not be a surprise, right? See you during our three days of festivities, which kick off on Friday July 6 and continue until the grand party on Sunday night – this is going to be way fun! Which DJs are spinning for this night and what type of music will they be spinning? Throughout the weekend, there will be some pretty heavy beats resonating from the speakers. The dance anthems will begin on Friday night with DJ Bryan Zero, who blends a great mix of top 40 songs and those classic jams that just never get old. On Saturday night, our resident VJ, Barry Browder, will be turning out all your favorite music videos and songs. On Sunday night, the gorgeous and amaz-
ingly skilled soundster La Trice Perry will be on the wheels of steel, providing a very special boost to the already wonderful anniversary festivities scheduled to take place that night. How does MOVA select their DJs? MOVA works with the best DJs located in South Florida as in-house residents for our weekly line up of events. The MOVA team selects these DJs based on years of personal experience and relationships with the DJs before they officially come aboard the MOVA team. All of our DJs played at either a MOVA sponsored event or as a special guest DJ before coming aboard the MOVA team. As far as guest DJs playing at MOVA during special events as Aqua Girl, Winter Party, Winter Music Conference, Ultra Music Festival, Orgullo Festival, White Party and a myriad of other special events, MOVA receives requests every week from all over the world. Our team carefully vets these requests and then works to create a special line up for events to complement our existing in-house DJ team. This has worked out very well as this year MOVA has hosted some of the top DJs in from Amsterdam to London to Brazil to New York to Los Angeles, including Tony Moran, Brett Henrichsen, DJ Bimbo Jones, DJ Lee Dagger, and DJ Scotty Thomson, to name just a few. The hottest men and extreme beats filled Saturday’s largest gay dance party on the Beach. othing in the world gives me that warm fuzzy feeling like finding new music. Okay, one other thing does. But that’s for a whole other column. A while ago as I watched the wickedly gorgeous Charlize Theron work the runway in a TV spot for Christian Dior, I got an earful of an edgy dance track buzzing in the background. I Shazamed the perfume ad faster than you can say “J’adore Dior” and discovered the song was from the indie-rock band, Gossip. Curious to see if this group was worth adding to my arsenal or just a one-hit wonder I did some more digging. What I uncovered was their latest album, appropriately titled A Joyful Noise. Surprisingly, Gossip has been around for over a decade. The trio currently made up of lead singer Beth Ditto, guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie formed in 1999 when Ditto, Paine and original drummer Kathy Mendonca were roomies in Washington. They were immediately scooped up by indie label K Records who released Gossip’s self-titled debut EP. After defecting to another label, they released two full-length albums, another EP and replaced Mendonca with Blilie. Suffering through years of obscurity they were finally able to break out in 2006 after opening for Scissor Sisters and releasing their third album Standing In The Way of Control. But the real party began when their follow-up, Music For Men, dropped in 2009. The first single, “Heavy Cross” (featured in the Dior spot), earned triple-gold status in Germany, broke the German record for the longest selling track in chart history and spent a mindblowing 82 weeks in the German Top 100. Now with A Joyful Noise, Gossip is rumored to become this year’s most talked about band. Fueled with epic angst-riddled dance tracks and chauffeured by shameless guitar riffs, the Brian Higgins (Xenomania) vehicle is a much-needed flush for the Guetta-esque garbage currently clogging my eardrums. You won’t hear Beth singing about her night at the club or how bad the boys want her. But her powerful pipes wailing on stand-outs like “Involved,” “Perfect World” and “Move in the Right Direction” make a much bigger impression when layered over the funk/electro/rock roots of this unique soundtrack. Although indie acts like Gossip have barely scratched the surface of American Top 40, it hasn’t stopped them from dominating the charts across the pond. A Joyful Noise debuted at #47 on the UK Albums Chart, topped the charts in Switzerland, peaked at #2 in Germany, #3 in France, #4 in Austria and #8 in Belgium. With the recent mainstream success of fellow indies Fun, Gotye and Lana del Rey it won’t be long before Gossip starts to spread here in the States. But you didn’t hear that from me. ou know everyone always equates the summer with beach activities. But not everyone makes a beeline for the beach. And when it comes to working out, not everyone considers the shore the best place for your summer workout routine. Perhaps you are more of the “let’s just stay by the pool” kind of person. Your idea of summer exercise is relaxing on a pool float with your favorite drink in hand. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it? Well, before you get too comfortable, here are some other ways to make the most of your own personal body of water – a great place to continue your exercise routine. • Leg Lift: Stand in shoulder-deep water and lightly hold onto the edge of the pool for balance. Extend your right leg straight out to the side as far up as you can – but only as far as you can while your toes are pointing toward the pool wall (don’t let your ankle turn)! Keep your hips straight toward the wall. Complete 8-10 times, and repeat with your left leg. • Water Roman Chair: In deep water, float either on a tube or with two kickboards resting under your arms. Place feet together and bend knees up to at least waist-level, pause briefly and return. Repeat 8-10 times. • Lateral Raises: Stand in shoulder-deep water with arms hanging straight down against your sides. Slowly extend both arms straight out to the sides all the way up to the water-level. Pause briefly and repeat. • Swim/Walk Interval Laps: Swim 1–2 laps (use any form you prefer: crawl, backstroke, etc). Walk 1–2 laps in the pool. Repeat sequence 4–6 times. • Water Squats: Stand in the water with your feet about hip width apart. Bend your knees slightly as you push your hips back as if you are sitting on a chair. Keep your knees behind your toes, and keep your feet planted firmly on the ground, squeezing your glutes as you raise up (you will love the way you look in your swimsuit!) Return to the start position and repeat. • Water Jogging: Can be done with the use of flotation devices where your feet don’t touch the ground, or the traditional way of actually jogging in the water. If you’re using a flotation device, run in place without your feet touching the ground. If you’re on the ground, try running 1-2 laps and then resting for 60 seconds. It’s more challenging in deep water and less in shallow. Use common sense to stay safe. Cover up with sun block, and protect your eyes with sunglasses that provide UV protection when on land and with goggles in the water. You should drink 16-20 ounces (about two big glasses) of water an hour or so before hitting the beach, and then drink constantly while working out. Just expect your body to react differently to a beach workout. So now that the summer is officially underway, let’s all have a good, safe and very healthy time. See you soon! lorida’s lovely social services are once again on display for their stellar performance – this time, again a result of young people in the custody of the state ending up in the world’s oldest profession not called “farming.” Once again the state has failed in its role of protector of the helpless; once again it has failed those in its care; and once again, it has failed the public that funds Florida’s train wreck of a safety net. It’s a recurring theme that pops up periodically when the issues grow too big to ignore. We all probably recall the stories about the state losing foster children – literally; in addition to the litany of abuse stories naming allegedly supervised family members and allegedly screened foster parents and facilities. Already the public is up in arms about the latest stories emerging. I suppose those who care about our failed social services network that Florida has a Republican governor – otherwise the story might not have ever gone public. The media tends to ignore government failures as they relate to social ills when its side is power. Notice how the nation’s homeless problem has disappeared since January 2009, despite the recession; and the way that the daily death reports for Afghanistan disappeared from the front pages of newspapers around the nation at the same time. The public has every right and reason to be furious about the failure of the state’s social welfare system. I first became aware of what a repugnant, inefficient system it was and what low-end employees it attracts (and rewards, and promotes) two decades ago and from lengthy first person experience. Since then, I’ve frequently railed against the system and exposed its biggest weakness: that it exists to benefit employees, not residents in need. Employees are far more interested in paperwork, passing the buck, and dodging responsibility than the spirit of their actual jobs. For anyone else familiar with how social services work in Florida, these stories aren’t an exception or a surprise. It’s daily life for a system in which foster homes have a financial motivation, in which foster care workers employ their charges in various criminal operation, and in which so many are financially benefitting from a relationship with government. It isn’t just Florida. And it isn’t just the child protective custody end of social services. In this way, Florida’s embarrassing ongoing failure is a textbook case of why the Nanny State is and will always be a failed model that costs human lives. It’s a very simple concept. Government can prevent evil – i.e. establish and prosecute those who break laws. But it is entirely different to do good than it is to prevent evil. When government seeks to do good, both government’s intrinsic structure and the law of unintended consequences rear their ugly heads. The intrinsic structure of government is one of self-perpetuation – like all entities, its first objective is to continue to exist. Solving problems does not perpetuate a situation, so therefore government bureaucracies don’t solve problems. What would happen to all of the minimally qualified social service workers if the system worked? The law of unintended consequences is more visible and easily explained by example. Government decides to exert its Nanny State authority and bans texting while driving. The result around the country: people text with their phone in their lap while driving so they can’t be observed. Not the safest way to drive. Government doesn’t care because the politician who created the legislation can crow about their life saving efforts. For the savvy it should be no surprise that trusting the Nanny State ends in disaster. For others, headlines like the most recent are shocking. They shouldn’t be.
