ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

A WEEKEND INSIDE A CHAMBORD VODKA BOTTLE Pink, pink, and even more pink! That was what was on everyone’s mind last weekend as Miami welcomed the 1st Annual Chambord Vodka Weekend to its sandy shores! And what a fantastic weekend it was – well at least what I can remember of it! I began my Chambord Vodka Weekend festivities at the VIP Cocktail and Dinner Party at The Angler’s Boutique Resort. The evening was hosted by the official emcees of the weekend, YouTube sensations Jessica & Hunter. At 7 p.m., local VIPs, socialites, and fashionistas began to fill the intimate space to snag a Chambord Vodka cocktail and a delicious three-course meal – both of which were absolutely amazing. My favorite cocktail of the night had to be the Starry Night, which was a combination of Chambord Vodka and Champagne. Afterwards, we all headed to MOVA to catch Jessica & Hunter’s first performance of the weekend. As revelers moved to the beats of DJ Latrice and sipped on Chambord Vodka martinis, you couldn’t help but feel the anticipation in the room for the upcoming show. It wasn’t long until the duo hopped on stage to perform their latest song, “What’s Your Favorite Drink?” A few martinis later, we were off to the next stop: the 13 Inches Up party at The Clevelander’s nightclub space, Club 1020. Within minutes, I found myself standing in front of one

of my favorite door divas, the fabulous Chyna Girl. After a few air kisses, I made my way up the stairs to dance the night away to some hot beats by DJs FR8-O and George Figares. While they turned it out on the turntables, we were turning it out in the VIP – popping Chambord Vodka bottles in the ice! The next morning, it was all about getting some sun poolside at The Catalina Hotel for the Chambord Vodka Weekend Cannon Ball Pool Party. After waking up smelling like a bowl of raspberries, I needed to dry out a little bit! Once we arrived, we were welcomed by Chambord’s gorgeous promo models, who wasted no time in decking us out in hot pink hats, towels, and temporary tattoos that aren’t really that temporary… I still can’t get mine off! While DJs FR8-O and Miik filled the afternoon with some highenergy beats, my friends and I sipped on Chambord Vodka cocktails and soaked up as many rays as we could. With the sun hiding behind the clouds most of the day, it was no easy task. Later that evening, we got it together and made our way over to Score for the Pink Party. Arriving around midnight, I was surprised to see the dance floor already packed with partygoers, sporting their hot pink Chambord Vodka hats and moving to the beats of DJ Charlie Rojas. By 1 a.m. it was time for the diva of the night to hop on the wheels of steel. As Lady Bunny worked her way into the

DJ booth, the crowd began to cheer and hold their pink glow sticks in the air. Before I knew it, the entire room was one giant hue of pink with a wave of glow sticks flowing back and forth, creating a feeling of unity and energy. As Lady Bunny worked the turntables, a few surprise performers hopped on the stage next to her for a few impromptu performances – the glamorous Elaine Lancaster being one of them. While the big wigged diva worked the stage, alongside Jessica & Hunter, you couldn’t help but feel the intensity in the room. Once Lady Bunny closed her set, we headed over to the most scandalous party of the weekend, which took place at Miami’s only gay stripper club, Johnny’s Miami. What took place there is so scandalous; I can’t even put it in print! Johnny’s Miami is something you just need to experience to believe! The next morning, I crawled out of a Chambord Vodka bottle and stumbled on over to The Standard Hotel for the official brunch. After grabbing a Chambord Vodka and Lemonade, I could slowly feel myself coming back to life, and once my steak and frits arrived, it was time to get the party started. Luckily, we had access to The Standard’s amazing pool and spa, so we spent the rest of the day relaxing poolside and detoxing. Overall it was an incredible weekend, filled with tons of Chambord Vodka and some really incredible parties! I can’t wait till next year!

WIRE FEATURE: DARE TO BE BARE @ DISCOTEKKA

BY THOMAS BARKER ATHENA PHOTO BY MM PHOTOGRAPHY When it comes to theme parties, there are very few people in South Florida that really know how to go all the way, and deliver an event that is so over the top; it becomes legendary. One club that continues to amaze me – and thousands of others – with their themed parties and events, is the already infamous Discotekka. After opening its doors, it has become the “it” place in South Florida to dress up, get wild, and experience a high production event. “When it comes to theme parties, no one does it better,” explains Discotekka general manager, Vegas Dion. “No expense is too much; no idea, too over the top, and every single person in the Discotekka family goes above and beyond to produce a themed party that all of our customers have come to love at Discotekka. It’s one of the major things that separates us from any other club in South Florida.” And this Saturday night, Discotekka will be doing it again, during its Annual Dare to be Bare Underwear party. Throw on your sexiest pair of skivvies and head over to this massive dance club and get free entrance if you “dare to be bare”! The night will also include body shots, best booty contests, performances by the divas of the house, and an exclusive fashion show by Creative Male! In the meantime, I caught up with the second in command at Discotekka, Athena Dion, who gave me the inside scoop on this weekend’s festivities. Check out what she had to say: Where are you from? I am originally from a land full of history, beauty, mythology, and treasure… a small country in the Mediterranean Sea known as Greece. It’s the birthplace of the Gods, to which I owe my name, Athena.

Discotekka has thrown some incredible theme parties. Which have been your favorites?

What is the most scandalous thing you guys have planned for this Saturday?

What a hard question! To name a few of my faves, I would have to go with the Waterworks Party, Blackout/ Lockdown Fetish event, Halloween, and our annual Blackwear party. All have been a tremendous success. No one throws a themed event like Disco.

From the “no clothes equals no cover” at the door, a fashion show by hot underwear models from Creative Male, a Best Booty Contest with the winner receiving $100 cash in the Forbidden Room, body shots and drink specials, to the high energy shows by our resident divas, it’s guaranteed to be a hot night with a lot of skin. In my experience where there’s skin, there’s scandal!

What is the theme of this Saturday’s party? This Saturday is our Dare to be Bare Underwear Party. Why Dare to be Bare? Why not!? It’s summer time in Miami. The less clothes, the better – especially with so many gorgeous people running around this city. Why not take a closer look? How bare do people have to be to get in for free? Milancita said it best: “If the underwear is right, and the package fits tight”, it’s an underwear party! 21 and over get in free if they are in their undies. Under 21 will receive reduced admission. I will actually be going commando! In terms of the show, what can people expect? As always at Discotekka, expect the unexpected. Last week, TP Lords had an army of dancers delivering an all around LFMAO production. The week before, I was found hanging in the air with a big black strap on... you just never know with this place. We have some of the finest entertainers in the business: Vegas Dion, TP Lords, Gina DiAngelo, Sasha Lords, and myself… not to mention that there will be an exclusive underwear fashion show by the models from Creative Male this week. It is sure to be a hot night.

13 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

In terms of music, who is the DJ and what will he be playing? Discotekka has three different rooms of sound. The main room and patio will be pumping the beats of DJ George Ferrero and DJ Carlos G, serving you house music all night. DJ Miik will be spinning hip-hop and open format in the Forbidden room, while DJ Ozz plays the Latin beats in our Goddess room. I also understand that you guys have some additional theme parties coming up. Can you tell me what we should be looking forward to? Coming back by popular demand – and I mean DEMAND! – the Waterworks 4.0 party, which will return before the end of the summer. We also have our Blackout/Lockdown party. The lights go off and the doors are locked – anything goes! We are working on our themes every day, so make sure you check out Milancita.com or Discotekka.com and follow us on Facebook to always be informed of what we have coming up next! TOP TRAX: VANBOTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO

It’s no secret how badly I live for new music. I mean, if music was food I’d have a serious eating disorder. And while there is an endless buffet of undiscovered music in the world, most of the tracks that cross my palette tend to leave a bad taste. Then someone like Vanbot lands on my plate and my hunger is once again satisfied. Vanbot (aka Ester Ideskog) is an electro-pop singer/songwriter/producer from Sweden. You know the country. The one that’s served up delicacies like Robyn, IKEA, the best meatballs ever, and the equally scrumptious Alexander Skarsgård? But no meal is complete without dessert, and Vanbot’s self-titled debut album is sweetened with a fresh new sound that “loves the synthesizer, lives for the nerve, and longs to dance!” After months of scheduling malfunctions, I was finally able to catch a few minutes with the digital diva herself to hear more about her debut album and what stimulates her circuits.

more on my song writing by writing as much as possible, and it all ended up in electronic pop. The album was a natural consequence of that. I’m thrilled that music is such a big part of my life.

So tell our readers about yourself. I grew up in a small village in the southern parts of Sweden and moved to Stockholm right after high school to study music. When I was a kid there, there was a lot of music around and everybody played an instrument or sang in church. It was a great environment to learn the language of music! That’s when my dreams about music started.

I find inspiration in the songs that communicate something hidden, an honest message. So I find inspiration in a lot of different music such as Jonsi, Bon Iver, Crystal Castles, and Empire of the Sun. I’m also hooked on the idea of the fighting spirit. Most of my songs on this album are meant to boost people and encourage them to believe in themselves. And though it sounds very nerdy, I sometimes get overwhelmed and very inspired by just a specific sound on my synthesizer.

How would you describe your music?

Do you have any good stories about your experience recording the album?

I really don’t believe in describing music. It can only be justified when experienced. But if you force me, I would say that it’s intoxicating and sticky! The songs are made from nerve and dressed in catchy melodies with deep beats. The melodies are my babies and for the first time they have found their true home in electronic music. When did you realize making music was going to be your life? That music should have a natural part of my life has never been a question, but to give it a chance and realize my dreams has been the big challenge. I decided to practice

Where did you come up with the name Vanbot? To be honest it started as a joke. I have this alter ego Vanessa. She’s the tougher city girl with the right DIY spirit. Vanessa does not question her capacity, she is a fighter. I let her reflect some of my qualities and double them. Vanessa is the better Me. Actually all songs are written by Ester, but performed by Vanessa. Ester is more artsy, and Vanessa is better on stage. Who are your greatest influences/inspirations?

One song woke me up in the middle of the night and made me find that chorus. I quickly had to record it on my cell half asleep. I also remember one day in the studio in Lisch. Sebastian (my very best producer!) and I were recording vocals when his microwave made a “pling” sound, which fit perfectly in the song both in rhythm and tone. That is what I call true design by accident! Is there any one of your songs that you are especially attached to? Each song represents a different struggle. The lyrics are my thoughts dressed up in words, and the songs are my

words dressed up in music. But if I have to choose one, it would be “Ringing.” It stands for so much of what I want to communicate. What do you think about pop music in America compared to that of Sweden? America is so much bigger and has more superstars, but it also feels more made up. Sweden is more like the cousin from the country side. You know, a little rough, not quite following the rules. What’s next for Vanbot? Two videos and more writing. I’m so inspired to spend more time in my little studio again. We have been separated for a while now. Where can we buy your music? You can buy the physical CD online on my website www. vanbotmusic.com (It is definitely worth owning with its beautiful art work, signed by Samuel Axelsson) or digitally on iTunes, Amazon, and more. Do you plan to go on tour in the U.S. anytime soon? No bookings in the US so far, but I would truly love to go there for a tour! What would it take to get you to make a stop in Miami on your tour? Supporting fans and flight tickets for me and my band! Seems like I have one out of the two already! If you’re an artist, musician or producer and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at Alfredo@ wireweekly.com

WIRED FLIX: TABLOID & THE NAMES OF LOVE @ THE CORAL GABLES ART CINEMA

Joyce McKinney landed in London with a suitcase full of ropes and chains and a head full of dreams. The blondehaired beauty queen was in England in search of her One True Love, Kirk Anderson; a Mormon missionary. She traveled with a posse that included a beefy bodyguard and Joyce’s best buddy T.J., a guy who was always ready to give Joyce whatever she needed – be it a tequila sunrise or a bondage hood. Joyce soon found Anderson, and, after one very wild weekend, the affair devolved into she-said, he-said: She said that she’d spent a passionate honeymoon with her fiancé. He said he’d been abducted and raped. British legal authorities took Anderson seriously, and before she could bat a false eyelash, Joyce McKinney found herself in prison – and at the center of one of the juiciest scandals ever to explode across the UK’s tabloid press. “Sex in Chains” screamed the headlines, as the story of “The Manacled Mormon” spread-eagled across the British papers late in 1977. It was one hell of a story. And now it’s the subject of Tabloid, the new film by documentarian Errol Morris.

Florida (1981), a group portrait of Sunshine State goofballs. It’s Errol Morris lite, tricked out with campy, ironically placed archival footage, sensational newspaper headlines, and 1970s news footage. One indicator of Tabloid’s tone: The film’s guide to all matters Mormon, from theological fine points to doctrinally mandated underwear, is Troy Williams, a gay activist and radio talk show host whose current relationship to the Church of LatterDay Saints is ambiguous. Tabloid is also a tight, feature-length close-up on Joyce McKinney, who bathes languorously in Morris’ cinematic spotlight. She tells most of the story – T.J. is dead and Kirk Anderson refused to talk to Morris – and she’s the primary source. If you like McKinney and if you find her a spunky gal who knows what she wants and won’t stop at anything to get it, Tabloid is a lot of fun. If she strikes you as a deluded, self-obsessed sociopath gleefully recounting her favorite pack of lies (“If you tell a lie long enough, you learn to believe it,” she says, beaming), your experience of Tabloid will be more nuanced -- and creepier.

Morris, who calls Tabloid an “anti-documentary,” is known for films of extraordinary power. He makes movies that get people released from death row. Placed alongside The Thin Blue Line, The Fog of War, and Standard Operating Procedure, Tabloid is a bit of a bonbon, which is more or less the idea.

“As a young woman, Joyce made a decision never to settle, to find true love at any cost, and that’s what makes her an enduring romantic heroine,” writes Morris. “She’s bound up in a dreamscape that she has created for herself, and very little can penetrate that protective bubble. In a sense, Joyce has always been living in a movie, long before she came to star in my film.”

“Tabloid is a return to my favorite genre—sick, sad, and funny,” writes Morris.

You can enter Joyce McKinney’s dreamscape at the Coral Gables Art Cinema August 12 – 18.

It’s a return to his earliest films such as Gates of Heaven (1978), about a California pet cemetery, and Vernon,

The Art Cinema offers a far less ambiguous movie experience, beginning August 19. The Names of Love (Le Nom

17 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

des Gens) is a bright, blameless, feel-good French romcom that arrives at Aragon Avenue on a wave of good reviews and César awards. In Names Baya Benmahmoud (Sara Forestier, who won a Best Actress César for her role) a French-Algerian free spirit, bumps up against Arthur Martin (Jacques Gamblin), a deeply discreet scientist whose Jewish heritage is virtually a family secret. Opposites attract, Baya’s hippy lifestyle rattles Arthur’s buttoned-up world, and laughter, love, and shiny multicultural rainbows bloom in the skies over Paris. What’s not to like? Baya is a manic mix-up, turning rightwing men leftward by sleeping with them; between dealing with his aging parents and performing an unending series of necropsies on various animal species, Arthur has his hands full. Names is amusing in its worldly French way and is politically correct to a fault. Some might find its shifts from comic capers to serious subjects a bit jarring; others might wish for more out-loud laughs and fewer decorous titters. Chacun à son gout – what’s the point of arguing about a fluffy French pastry topped with a dollop of diversité?
