BY THOMAS BARKER
ELITE BEAT RELIVED! So I have to admit that one of my guilty pleasures is taking the time to go back to my original nightlife columns to read about the crazy life I used to – and to a certain degree – still live in South Florida. This week, we gave our cover to one of SoBe’s hottest Thursday night parties, Edison Farrow’s Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15. In doing my research for the story, I decided to pull up one of my very first nightlife columns from May of 2005. At the time, Edison had just closed his incredibly successful party, Jade Fridays, and decided to create a huge block party that would allow people to bar hop between Score, Laundry Bar, and Buck15 with the anchor being Simple Life Thursdays at Buck. Check out what I had to say, six years ago! As the timeless expression goes, the closing of one door sparks the opening of another. With the closing of Jade, the Miami gay crowd has been looking for a hip new party spot. Being one of those boys myself, I kicked off my weekly party investigation at Edison Farrow’s new block party. For the first time ever, Score’s VIP area, Crème Lounge, Miss Yip’s Buck 15 and Laundry Bar have teamed up with the man about
town, Edison Farrow, to give Miami a new fabu party place every Thursday night. Since the event takes place on a weeknight, everything gets started a bit early… which gives you plenty of time to get a good buzz going and still get some much needed rest for the long Friday ahead. Think a la LA style. Anyhow, the party was definitely a hit among the locals. A horde of people from all over South Florida flocked to Lincoln Lane for the fivedollar cocktails, gorgeous men, and diverse venues. I started off the party in Buck15. With Daisy D spinning the best in rock and hip-hop in the retro infused upstairs lounge, this turned out to be my favorite spot of the evening. Sipping on my Grey Goose cocktails, I managed to break it down to the beats of the White Strips followed by a little trip to the “Candy Shop” with 50 Cent, which really got me going. (You know how I love me some hip-hop.) The highlight of the party – besides the incredible music of course – was the energy of this new little shindig. It was a no-hold-bar event, where hot guys swung from the rafters, while the rest of the crowd cheered and screamed in support! By 2 a.m., I realized that I should probably stop dancing before someone I know sees me, but it was already too late. The owner of Buck15, Jennie Yip, interior designer, Chris Ciccone, and Edison had already spotted me, and only encouraged the debauchery. While checking out the aesthetically

pleasing crowd of yummy men, Jennie filled me in on how excited she is to be hosting a new weekly gay event at her hot little venue. Six years later, the party was still going strong, but unfortunately Buck15’s time at the Lincoln Lane space was up, leaving Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15 without a home. Luckily Buck15 wasn’t homeless for too long, as it will now reopen this Thursday night at its new home, just a couple of blocks down from its original location on Lincoln Lane. We couldn’t be more excited! In this week’s issue, we also included a feature on one of my favorite divas of the dance floor, the fabulous DJ Pride. During that same block party that kicked off Simple Life Thursdays, Pride also kicked off her new, very successful Thursday night at Crème and Sugar at Score. For six years, DJ Pride worked the turntables, turning out some of the hottest heavy house and tribal tracks in town, and will now be taking her party to everyone’s home away from home, TWIST on Thursday nights. So after you swing by Buck15, head on over to TWIST for a wild night with DJ Pride! See you on the dance floor!

WIRE COVER: ROUND 2 FOR BUCK15
BY
AS THOM
remember the first time I was stopped by the Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15. I had never been to the space and had no idea what to expect. After waiting in line for what seemed like forever – yes no one was and has ever been treated any differently, even lowly little nightlife columnists like me – Chyna Girl finally waved me in. Within seconds I found myself surrounded by the young and gorgeous, literally swinging from the rafters and moving to the beats of DJ Daisy D. A couple of drinks and a few shots later, I was not only witnessing a crazy night of debauchery, I had also become a part of it! As Daisy pumped a remix of Pitbull’s latest track, Shake, I couldn’t help but feel like a mouse moving to the sultry beats of my very own drag version of the Pied Piper! Years later, I would occasionally stop by Buck15 for another wild night, and every single time it felt exactly like the first night – wild, different, and sexy! So when I found out that Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15 was going to close after an amazing six year run, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad that one of South Beach’s hottest gay parties was about to disappear from the scene. Luckily my despair didn’t last for long, as Edison and Daisy are teaming up with Buck15 once again to bring back their super successful party at the new Buck15 space, which is still located on Lincoln Road, a couple of blocks down from its original location. I recently caught up with both Daisy and Edison to get the inside scoop on the re-launch of their hot Thursday night, Simple Life Thursdays and its return to Lincoln Road. 10 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

of everything so everyone is happy and having fun. As a showgirl, I love to hear a crowd scream and clap. That really carries over into my DJ work. Also, having done my hosting gigs and comedy sketches and performances and having went to New World, majoring in dance, I really use all of my experience to build a night… which songs would go well with others to tell a story. I think about it more than people may realize.
Edison: I went to see Buck15 as soon as it opened about seven years ago. I knew the owner, Jennie Yip and the manager Nathan. One Thursday, I stopped by at around midnight, and there was nobody there. I asked Nathan, “Where is everybody?”. “Thursdays are slow”, he re- When did you realize this was going to be such plied. It felt like a frat party or a house party. When did you first meet Edison? Daisy: Always saw Edison around the scene, and he was always very nice and personified class. He always treated me well. Actually he is responsible for me getting my two-year run on WSVN’s “Deco Drive”. Guess he saw a few of my performances, thought I was quick witted, and recommended me for a one-time stint that turned into a two-year run as “Deco Drive’s Queen on the Scene”. We also did David Sexton’s hit holiday musical, “It’s a Fabulous Life”, together two years in a row at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. It was such a great experience. I would love to do that play again. Why did you pick Daisy for your DJ?
Are you excited about the new Buck15 space? Daisy: I’ve seen a li’l bit of it, and I can tell you it’s got the heart and soul of the original Buck! Graffiti on the walls done by super talented local artists, possibly some rafters. It’s similar in size but a tiny bit bigger. We always had a line of people waiting, and now we can fit more folks in there. The wait for the fun won’t be too long at this space. Edison: People will love the new space. It actually has more potential, because there are more areas to work with, but it still has the intimate vibe that the old Buck had. What can people expect for your first set at the new Buck15 space?
Daisy: Some of Buck’s fav’s with some brand spankin’ new stuff thrown in! I’ve been preparing since I heard Why do you think Buck has been so successful? and looking for new stuff. Edison: I was the first to book Daisy as a DJ in Miami. She was my 80s DJ at Jade Lounge and she also did shows there. I thought that Daisy would be a natural for a fun, open format vibe. WIRE FEATURE: DJ PRIDE MOVES TO TWIST
BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTO BY COURTNEY RODWELL
Everyone’s favorite home away from home is now going to be all about the gritty, hardcore tribal house music you can’t find anywhere else. That’s right! TWIST recently launched its new Thursday night dance party with the fabulous DJ Pride. You may know DJ Pride from Winter Party, White Party, and Aqua Girl, but she is most known in SoBe for her six-year residency at Crème and Sugar at Score every Thursday night, providing an incredible mix of tribal and deep house tracks you couldn’t hear anywhere else. Now, the diva will be taking her sets to the next level at TWIST every Thursday night for their new Double Up Thursdays from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Beyond the heavy beats, you can also enjoy two-for-one drinks till 3 a.m. We recently caught up with DJ Pride to see what she’s got in store for us every Thursday night at TWIST. Check it out! You seem to be everywhere these days. What have you been working on? I’ve definitely been keeping really busy. My amazing Friday night residency at Living Room Fort Lauderdale and my Thursday nights keep me working hard week to week in South Florida. I also do special events and guest spots all over Florida and the country. Recently, I’ve also been working on a new Saturday pool party, which I should be launching soon. What have been some of your favorite gigs? Through the years, I’ve been fortunate to perform at some of the most amazing events in the country. White Party, Winter Party, Aqua Girl, Gay Days… the list goes on and on. But in all honesty, it’s been the parties like Crème & Sugar at Score, Living Room, and TWIST that have provided some of the best memories. I’ve celebrated birthdays, milestones, found relationships and lost them, and gained many friends at my local residencies. They are a part of me and my personal life. I’ve put all of myself into them. Those are by far my favorite gigs.
So now you are going to be spinning at TWIST. How did that come about?
there on that night. It’s what made Crème & Sugar Thursdays so successful. I’m excited to do that again.
Well I’ve had a great relationship with Joel and Richard for over nine years now. TWIST was actually the first gay club I spun at in South Beach. When I first moved here, I was the Saturday night DJ in the side room for several months and have been a guest DJ since then. The idea of a weekly residency has come up many times over the years, but we just hadn’t found the right fit until now.
What can people expect from your sets at TWIST?
After so many years at Score, why did you decide to move on to TWIST?
How do you feel about becoming the first resident female DJ at TWIST?
The years I spent at Score are unforgettable and I will continue to be a guest there. I had an amazing, house music driven, gay weekly night for over six years. On the beach that is unheard of. But when Score recently decided to make a change to a pop music format on Thursdays, I knew that I wanted to continue my Thursday nights. I’ve always loved our scene for the diversity. It is important to me to continue to provide something unique and different for the gay scene. There is nowhere else you can go during the week to hear the underground deep tech and tribal I spin.
I hadn’t even thought about it but I am in fact the first. Wow! Well, ever since the beginning of my career, and even before that, I have been at home with the boys. I’ve been going out in the gay scene since the age of 15. Hell, I celebrated my 15 birthday at Roxy NYC. It’s all I know. It’s where I’ve found myself and my music and where I’ve received a ton of love and friendship, so I guess I simply feel lucky.
How will this Thursday night party be similar and how will it be different than your previous Thursday nights at Score? Every party and venue takes on its own unique vibe and energy. However, part of the allure of continuing my Thursdays somewhere familiar like TWIST is that my fans, which have loyally followed me for years, could see me somewhere that feels like home to them. What are you most looking forward to about spinning at TWIST? TWIST has always been a place I consider a second home on South Beach. It has shaped my identity and my sound, but Thursdays there are also new and fresh to me in many ways. I’m looking forward to building something special there - a house music lover’s haven at eveyone’s favorite local club. A sound and a vibe you can only get

TOP TRAX: THE 2011 VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS
BY DJ FR8-O
“I want my MTV!” These were the words that launched the very first music television channel exactly 30 years ago and changed the way we revel in our favorite trax. MTV not only gave music videos a place to frolic in heavy rotation, it defined a generation and re-defined the music industry. Nowadays we’re lucky to catch even a glimpse of anything other than bad reality shows on MTV. But there’s one day of the year where music vids take center stage and our favorite artists come out to play – The MTV Video Music Awards. Ever since the inaugural show in 1984, the VMAs have been the most anticipated event in music since The Grammys. The live event never fails to surprise us with unexpected moments and over-the-top performances that are talked about for years. This year will be no different. Some of the performers include Adele, who will be “rolling in” her debut appearance on the show and Lady Gaga who will open with what is sure to be her most-talked-about performance yet. The black carpet hasn’t even been rolled out yet and records have already been broken. “Firework” femme, Katy Perry is set to clean house with nine nominations for not just one, but FOUR of her videos! Besides the usual overflow of celebs, fashion, and jaw-dropping performances, the VMAs are also set to honor Britney Spears with a special tribute. The Video Music Awards will broadcast live on MTV Sunday, August 28th at 9:00 p.m. And the nominees are…

WIRED FLIX: AT THE MOVIES, THE WANING DAYS OF SUMMER CAN BE… AWKWARD
It’s time to finish up with summer fun and move on to the more serious cinema of autumn, time for 3-D blockbusters and crass comedies to have a last run at the big bucks before the multiplexes become adult-friendly again. While this week’s indie cinema prizes are pretty evenly distributed, the Miami Beach Cinematheque’s trophy case shines brightest with Tabloid, Errol Morris’ “antidocumentary,” fresh from a one-week run in Coral Gables. Gables audiences didn’t exactly embrace Morris’ tale of Joyce McKinney, the blond bombshell whose erotic adventures with a Mormon missionary (she said it was a passionate honeymoon; he said it was an abduction and rape) splashed luridly across the UK’s tabloids in 1977. Perhaps Miami Beach audiences will be more open to the scandalous story of McKinney and her “Manacled Mormon.” In this case open-mindedness will be rewarded; Tabloid is an absorbing and frequently hilarious retelling of a quirky tale and a mesmerizing portrait of McKinney, shaped by a contemporary master. Joyce McKinney scandalized the UK in the 1970s; Luis Buñuel scandalized Paris in the 1920s, no mean feat given the madding crowd of artists and anarchists, poets, and provocateurs who thronged the City of Light. The Cinematheque bids summer adieu with a vintage shot of scandal, beginning a retrospective of Buñuel films with a screening of Un Chien Andalou and L’Age d’Or. Un Chien Andalou, a collaboration between Buñuel and Salvador Dali that provoked viewers with its surrealistic imagery. Audiences rioted at some screenings of L’Age D’or, which was critical of the Catholic Church.
Today it’s hard to imagine a film provoking such passion. The Cinematheque’s August 31st screening of these two classics is a chance to recapture the aura of a place and time at once dangerous and heroic. The Buñuel retrospective continues through the fall. Coral Gables audiences eyed Tabloid warily; they’re snuggling up to The Names of Love, sending it flowers and annoying friends with endless talk of “nesting.” It’s love, and who can blame them? Names of Love is funny, charming, and politically correct, but not too, you know, serious. The affair continues at the Coral Gables Art Cinema through September 1st.
action, spiced with sexy fun, but 3D Sex & Zen’s comedy is dopey, its action is unremarkable, and its sex is bland - except when it’s animated by a fairly disturbing streak of sadism. In the course of the film a number of comely female sex slaves come in for some rough treatment and the film’s female lead is raped. Twice. Really? Raped twice? Is that somebody’s idea of a hot erotic twist? It’s certainly twisted, but erotic? Not so much. The Coral Gables Art Cinema begins late-night showings of 3D Sex & Zen this weekend.
TABLOID
3D Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy isn’t cuddly like Names of Love. It’s spiky and spunky and not nearly as sexy as it sounds. The moral of its tortuously convoluted story, after all, is that sex doesn’t matter; if, say, one’s husband can’t perform because his genitals have been cut off (twice). What of it, particularly if one’s own nether regions are sheathed in an iron chastity belt, possessed of supernatural powers, that can only be unlocked with a magic key that’s been melted in a fiery furnace? If you still love each other, what’s the difference?
August 26th – 30th at Miami Beach Cinematheque 1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach Tickets are $10.00 www.mbcinema.com For more information call 305.67.FILMS (673-4567)
A Chinese import that purports to be the first 3-D erotic movie (it’s not; 3-D erotica is an American innovation of the late 1960s), 3D Sex & Zen is erotic in the softest sense of the word – chocolate-covered marshmallows have harder cores. It’s a manic mishmash of soft-core sex, broad comedy, and stylized action wrapped in a sumptuous sheath of ritual and folklore.
3D SEX & ZEN: EXTREME ECSTASY
This formula could yield an hour or two of sexy fun, spiced with exciting action, or an hour or two of exciting
